Reviewing a Packet for Submission

possible to sit down to review the
contents for the Admission packet with
students prior to submission of the
packets

Other Useful Information
19
Expenses
• Estimated expenses for the Paramedic
& EMT programs are listed on the main
page of the Paramedic & EMT web
page
– See the “Estimated Expenses for EMS
Programs” link
20
What can I do before classes
begin?
• Gather immunization records
– Ensure all are current
– Have copies readily available
• Required immunizations are covered
next….
21
Immunizations
• All Health & Human Services Programs at
SCC require the same immunizations
• Many immunizations were obtained as a
child; it just requires that you obtain your
immunization records
• Now is a good time to start gathering this
information
• If you have not received one of the required
immunizations, you may want to get a head
start as there may be multiple shots and
several weeks between them22
Immunizations - MMR
• MMR (Measles, Mumps & Ruebella)
– Should have received as a child in 2 separate doses
– If you cannot find your immunizations, have a TITER
drawn first (it’s cheaper)
– If you are immune to all 3, then you will not require a
booster
– If the TITER results show that you are not immune to
1 or more, than you will require the booster
– Some International students only received
immunization for Measles and Mumps and NOT
Ruebella
• These students will REQUIRE the MMR immunization
23
Immunizations - Varicella
• Varicella Vaccine – against Chicken Pox
– This was administered in 2 doses 4 weeks apart
starting in 1995
– If you never received the vaccine, have a TITER
drawn first (it’s cheaper)
– If you are immune, you are fine
– If you are NOT immune, you will be required to
receive the entire vaccine – 2 doses, 4 weeks
apart
– DO NOT WAIT until the last minute to have this
immunization administered
24
Immunizations - Td/Tdap
• Tetanus (Td) Booster
– A booster is required every 10 years
• Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis)
– This is a 1 time immunization as an adult followed
by a Td booster every 10 years
– It is HIGHLY recommended that health care
students receive this immunization
• If Td is within date, you are NOT required to
receive the Tdap
25
Immunizations – Tuberculin Skin Test
• PPD –Tuberculin Skin Test
– If you are currently working in a health care
environment, then all that is required is your yearly, 1-
step PPD result
– If you have NEVER had a PPD, you will be required to
complete a 2-step PPD
– A subsequent yearly PPD will be required for the
program
– Please note that International students often have a
positive skin test, and are required to have a chest x-
ray and/or written documentation from their healthcare
provider that there is NO active disease
• This will also be required to be updated on a yearly
basis26
Immunizations – Influenza
• All Paramedic students must be immunized
against influenza annually
– This is a requirement of all students with patient
contact between October 1 – March 31
– The alternative of wearing a mask within 6 feet of
any patient is not feasible in pre-hospital
emergency care
• Proof of immunization must be received by a
predetermined date
27
Where can I receive these
immunizations?
• There are a number of places within Spartanburg, Cherokee
and Union Counties where you can go to have the
immunizations and/or titer taken care of
• Below are a few places where you can go to have these taken
care of
• In addition, you may go to your Primary Health Care Provider
