Dear BRHS Families:
So much good stuff happening…it is hard to keep up. Many of our sen-iors are gaining community based scholarships and awards. Many of our student groups are competing in state and international competition and performing well. Our sports programs continue to compete and several teams have their eyes set on post season play.
The spring musical was great and prom went well. Congrats to our stu-dents. Next we will spend a considerable amount of time and effort to ad-minister AP and SOL tests. Please be sure to check the web site for infor-mation about times and locations.
School ends on June 13. We are expected to have students attend through then.

Math—Mu Alpha Theta Mathelicious
“I know the answer! I know the answer!”
“No, I know the answer!”
“The answer is five!” One of the kids shouted with enthusiasm,
while the other kids let out disappointing sighs that they weren’t the ones
to tell the teacher the correct answer. The teacher smiled back, nodded, and asked one of them to ex-
plain why the answer was five. Once again, their eyes lighted up with excitement as they raised their
hands to be the one to answer.
Ryan Hess, Luke Fincham, Charley Klemm, Bryce Huber, and Will Wiggins joined the math-
letes, an after-school club, in the Leesburg Elementary School. They prepared for months for the com-
petition of the year. The competition involved an independent section where the kids had thirty
minutes to answer ten math questions. But these were not ordinary fifth grader math problems that one
thinks of. They were complicated, and one does not only have to count numbers, they require the use
of logic and reasoning. These wonderful, intelligent children excel in this world problems, as they had
been training and working on them since the beginning of the year. In the competition, they had to
compete against teams that have been together for years, as if this competition was the only single
thing that mattered in their lives. All their dedication and extra time went up to this, so it was no secret
that the kids were intimidated by the other mathletes. Regardless of that, they conquered their fears
and doubts and ended up 12th out of 35 teams. An amazing success. There was also a team section
where they had to work together, and the tactic of this fifth graders was to divide and conquered,
which they did exceptionally, as they had 7 questions out of ten right.
Now imagine solving advanced problems that can be solved with algebra and arithmetic meth-
ods, but never having learned those methods; so you had to find the patterns without formulas, and all
you can use is your mind, no calculator, no help. That’s how incredible these kids are. Christine Wig-
gins, a mother of Will Wiggins, as well as a mentor of the team, took one of the warm-up exercises
that the fifth graders did during the club, and made her Math Analysis class, which is made up of
mostly Sophomores and Juniors, solve it. The older kids used the arithmetic formula, and with the use
of reasoning and plugging in numbers, they were able to solve it. The younger kids, on the other hand,
figured out the pattern and added the numbers by hand until they found the right answer. This is one
of the many examples demonstrating the reasoning skills this young fifth graders hold. As one of the
lucky tutors from Mu Alpha Theta that got the opportunity to go help these kids prepare for the com-
petition, I was able to see first-hand the excitement and passion these kids feel towards mathematics.
Just being around them inspired me to keep working hard and to feel as passionate about something as
they feel about math.

DECA Hello Broad Run!!!
Our Marketing Program and DECA Chapter are happy to report our official ICDC (International Career Development Conference & Competition) results to you! Our DECA Chapter took 33 young, professional adults down to Atlan-ta, Georgia, where we joined over 20,000 other marketing students, DECA members, advisors, and business lead-ers. It was a great conference! Each of our competitors competed in events with over 150 other teams or individu-als. We are so proud of all our students who attended; they represented our school, our community, and their families in the most honorable ways!

Did you know that Broad Run’s Band Program has been quite busy throughout the Winter Season and into
the Spring Season, all the way through the end of the year?
Our Broad Run Wind Ensemble gave a beautiful performance at the Virginia Band and Orchestra Director’s
Association (VBODA) District XVI Assessments, earning straight Superior ratings across the board! Com-
bined with Superior ratings achieved by our Broad Run Orchestra and Broad Run
Choir, we are proud to say that Broad Run High School’s Music Department has
achieved the designation of Virginia Music Educator’s Association (VMEA) “Blue
Ribbon” school for the second year in a row!
Congratulations go out to our Broad Run Winterguard for their 2018 program
“Explaining the Infinite.” Performing as a combined ensemble with several mem-
bers from Rock Ridge High School, the Broad Run Winterguard brought home the
GOLD at the AIA North Championships, topping heir Scholastic A3 Class with a score of 79.59!
The Broad Run Indoor Drumline spent the Winter season performing “The
Dawn of Communication” at numerous competitions in the AIA North circuit.
The Drumline continues to work hard and grow after being promoted to
Scholastic A Class last year, and the unit was proud to have risen to 8th place
at AIA North Championships with a score of 79.95 – their highest ranking yet
in this class.
On Friday, May 11, 2018, the Broad Run Band Program will be hosting a Gala Art Exhibition and Auction in honor of Mother’s Day at the Embassy Suites Hotel Dulles – North/Loudoun, located at 44610 Waxpool Road, Ashburn,
VA. The event opens at 7:00 PM with a cocktail hour featuring hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar and, once the auction Is complete, dessert will be served. Tickets will also be available at the door. Our 2018 Marching Spartans Commitment Night will be held on Monday, May 14, 2018 at 7:00 PM in the
Broad Run Cafeteria. Any student who is interested in joining the Marching Spartans next fall should
attend the meeting, along with a parent or guardian. In preparation for Commitment Night, the Color
Guard will host clinics from May 8th through May 11th from 4:00 – 6:00 PM at Farmwell Station Middle
School in the Cafeteria. Our Drumline will also be holding clinics on May 7th and May 9th from 4:30 – 6:30
PM in the Broad Run Band Room. Drumline auditions will take place on Wednesday, May 16th.
Come on out to the Lakes Community Outdoor Amphitheater for Jazz on the Lake – an Ashburn Village
tradition – on Thursday, May 17, 2018 at 6:00 PM! Bring a chair or a blanket and enjoy some swinging
jazz, presented by the Broad Run High School and Farmwell Station Middle School Jazz Ensembles.
