Discretionary Learner Support Funds (DLSF)

The DLSF fund is designed to assist students from low income families to meet some of the expenses incurred as a result of studying. Go to www.sparsholt.ac.uk/information/money-matters for more information.

Funding is also available to families whose household income is below £30,000 through the College Hardship Fund.

Childcare Students aged 16–20 on the 7th September 2015 who care for their own child(ren) can claim for childcare and travel costs to and from their childcare provider. They can claim up to £160 per week and applications are through www.gov.uk/care- to- learn or 0800 121 8989. Childcare provider must be OFSTED registered.

I’ve taken the City & Guilds Chainsaw Awards in Chainsaw Maintenance, Cross-cutting, Felling and Processing Small Trees at Sparsholt College as part of my Apprenticeship in Trees and Timber.

They are brilliant courses – very practical and working in lots of different environments on local estates.

The skills are exactly what I need to help me get to where I want to go, working as a Forester on an estate or small woodland. I’d

QUALIFICATIONS: WHAT DO THEY MEAN?

CERTIFICATES

Many of our part-time courses lead to qualifications recognised by industry bodies such as City & Guilds. Employers may need you to have these certificates to recognise your competence to do the job.

LEVEL 2

Equivalent to GCSE level study. For example, most employers ask for a Level 2 in Maths and English. These courses provide skills to do the job. Completing an Apprenticeship programme will earn you a Level 2 qualification.

LEVEL 3

Equivalent to A Level study. This level is suited to supervisory grades of employment. An Advanced Apprenticeship will include a Level 3 qualification.

LEVEL 4

Level 4 qualifications are stage 1 of degree level courses and are also considered the level for many professionally accredited programmes. These indicate advanced level skill and knowledge. Many of these programmes are eligible for 24+ Advanced Learning Loans, so you don’t have to pay anything upfront.

24+ Advanced Learning Loans are available to students aged 24 and above to fund some Level 3 and Level 4 courses. The loan will cover tuition fees so you won’t have to pay anything upfront. You also won’t start paying it back until after the course is completed and you earn £21,000+ a year.
