Closing these skills and opportunity gaps is an urgent economic and social imperative. It is estimated that 65% of all jobs in the U.S. require some postsecondary education and training, yet millions of youth are not on the path to obtain postsecondary education nor are they connected to the workforce, equating to the taxpayer burden of $93 billion annually in lost revenues and increased social services. It is clear that much work needs to be done to close our nation’s educational achievement and economic opportunity gaps.

With our partner network of schools, businesses, and funders who recognize the importance of youth career-readiness, Genesys Works is tackling these problems head-on.

By giving students the opportunity to succeed in a professional work environment while still in high school, we can spark interest in new career possibilities, empower students to achieve career success, and help them achieve sustainable economic futures.

We achieve our mission through a proven core program model that includes: Professional and essential skills training over the course of 8 weeks before the senior year of high school. 12-month paid internship where students work 1,000 hours in a professional job while in high school, earning on average $13,000. One-on-one mentoring from staff, supervisors and workplace colleagues. College and career coaching on postsecondary options and career pathways. Alumni support through college and into the workforce.

But we don’t do this alone. Each of you, whether a funder, supervisor, teacher, or business leader, plays an integral role in helping to change the trajectory of life for our young professionals.

Together, we are catalyzing meaningful change in the lives of our students, their families, and the communities we serve. Thank you for being our partners in this important work.

Taking the helm of an organization as impactful as Genesys Works is an opportunity that is both inspiring and motivating. Just as we ask our students to step forward and step up, I am excited to partner with schools, companies, and our community to create even more opportunities for Chicago youth.” — Kim Day, Executive Director Joined Genesys Works Chicago February, 2020

Students growing up in underserved communities often don’t know what career

opportunities exist, nor do they realize that a professional career is attainable,

putting them on a lifelong path of underemployment and unable to reach their

true potential. In addition, the disparity between what students are taught in the

classroom and what’s needed for success in the workplace continues to widen,

exacerbating the challenges faced by many of today’s youth. This skills gap,

coupled with inequitable access to professional career opportunities for those

in the lower socio-economic tiers, creates division in the job market and impairs

economic mobility for those that need it most.

Through 8 weeks of paid, professional skills training, and a year-long corporate internship, our students gain the tools they need to be successful in our ever-changing economy. While our program is rigorous, our motivated students utilize Genesys Works as a catalyst for sustainable impact—in their lives, and in our communities.

For Kiara Vega, a Desktop Support Consultant at CME Group, she learned of Genesys Works after her cousin became a Genesys Works intern at CME Group in 2018. Knowing her cousin enjoyed her experience, Kiara felt comfortable and confident taking an internship position at CME Group with Genesys Works two years later.

Not only does Genesys Works change the lives of our Young Professionals, but our program creates a ripple effect of impact in the networks of each Young Professional we serve. As Kiara says, “I always recommend Genesys Works because it gives you real-life experience in a corporate setting and sets you up for success.”

Genesys Works has given me the proper IT and professional training to handle all situations thrown at me, whether at work or in my everyday life.” — Kiara Vega, intern at CME Group

Corporate partners are at the core of our success. Genesys Works’ unique earned-income model provides resilient, reciprocal, and sustainable partnerships with our 42 Corporate Partners across the city of Chicago. This relationship means our organization can be responsive to the needs of our Corporate Partners, working toward a more significant impact for our community, together.

For companies like West Monroe Partners, their initiative to help prepare the future workforce is ingrained in the company’s core values. “West Monroe Partners actively tries to complement the work of educational institutions to prepare our next generation for the challenges that our most demanding industries are facing,” said Tom Hulsebosch, Senior Managing Director of West Monroe Partners.

This drive to develop our Young Professionals as tomorrow’s leaders inspire all who interact with our interns at West Monroe Partners. Internship supervisor Alyssa Landgrebe shared that she looks forward to a future in which her current interns have the opportunity to mentor others—creating an even broader impact. “Our partnership with Genesys Works helps mold the next generation of the workforce that will lead us in the future.”

Genesys Works gave us the ability to build the next generation of leaders with high school interns from Chicago Public Schools, which we would not have been able to accomplish on our own.” — Tom Hulsebosch, West Monroe Partners

Gaining professional work experience while still in high school helps spark a future students may not have imagined otherwise. Recognizing our students have the ambition and abilities to pursue professional pathways, our alumni team focuses on offering guidance and support, even after their internship has ended.

With this experience and support, many of our interns enter the professional world ahead of their peers. In the case of Class 4 alumni Jessica Prieto, her Genesys Works internship landed her a full-time position with TransUnion. Now, after six years with TransUnion, Jessica can pay it forward, supervising Class 10 interns.

“One of my favorite parts of being a supervisor to our new interns is being able to give back to Genesys Works,” Jessica said. “I enjoy giving input on their work assignments to provide a better learning experience from an alumni perspective.

As a high school student, Genesys Works provided powerful guidance for college. As a college student and intern, Genesys Works provided a safety net and opportunity for my future.” — Jessica Prieto, student at University of Illinois at Chicago

Genesys Works’ program is uniquely situated to equip students with the training needed to cultivate future-proof skills in the 21st century. Our program not only provides skills training and meaningful internships but attentive one-on-one coaching for students’ postsecondary pathways.

Students attend high school classes every morning, then head to their internships in the afternoon. With a consistent work schedule, students have the opportunity to take ownership of their work and envision the possibilities for their futures.

“Genesys Works internships allow students to apply what they're learning in high school to real, practical scenarios at work,” says Erin Estrada, Director of Postsecondary Counseling at Intrinsic Schools. “The value of this experience is unparalleled and is one that most schools do not have the capacity to support. We could never prepare and support our interns the way Genesys Works does.”

Genesys Works interns have witnessed firsthand the importance of confidence and preparation, something that we can only allude to while they’re in school. This professional maturity truly sets them apart from their peers.” — Erin Estrada, Intrinsic Schools

PurePoint Financial believes the pursuit of the American Dream starts with saving, and that taking small steps today can open doors to a more promising tomorrow. Their mission of inspiring brighter tomorrows is evident with their commitment to the Chicago community. From the beginning, PurePoint was clear that they didn't just want to write a check; they wanted to get involved and work directly with our students.

From attending volunteer events like our Resume Workshop to hosting a Financial Literacy evening that was open to Genesys Works students and alumni across the country, to sponsoring events like Breaking Through and Signing Day, PurePoint shows up for our Young Professionals. The support we receive from PurePoint has been instrumental in supporting our students and fostering growth. As one of our largest funders, we are incredibly appreciative of our partnership, which allows us to support Chicago students as they step toward their promising future.

Genesys Works understands what it means to be a true partner. The doors are open for collaboration and creativity. There has not been a single initiative in which Genesys Works and PurePoint have not found a creative way to execute.” — Tony Kovinkov

Launched in 2018, the Genesys Works Associates Board (GWAB) is a group of dedicated Chicago professionals who fundraise, volunteer, and participate in events to support our mission. In addition to offering career guidance to our Young Professionals, the GWAB hosts membership and fundraising events, last year raising over $3,500 to support our students. Our GWAB members—a diverse group representing a broad array of careers—include enthusiastic individuals, supporting our students through personal membership, as well as teams, joining through our corporate membership opportunity. We look forward to growing this community impact in 2020, with new members and expanded events.
