From The Editors Desk...

Well here we are again those lighter nights are upon us as we are pushing towards summer.

What glorious weather we are all having at the moment. I am sure most of you are out

making the most of it. Could I please send out a plea for all you dog owners to pick up after

yourselves as there have been reports of dog fouling again throughout the village.

There are dog bins provided for you to use. If you cannot find one please take it home with

you as it’s not very nice to deposit it into someone’s hedge or drop into their garden nor is it

desirable to leave it and the public footpaths for children & adults alike to step in it.

Please send all items to me at: [email protected] or to my home address

shown on back of magazine.

PLEASE REMEMBER THE DEADLINE FOR INCLUSION IS 15th OF EACH MONTH

3rd Sparkford Scout Group

Latest from 3rd Sparkford Beavers, Cubs and Scouts

We are delighted a few locals have come forward to help with Cubs, both male and female which is wonderful, thank you! We are still seeking more helpers for the Scouts, so the boys and girls can undertake some more activities - please get in touch!

Our Group Section Leader, Rob Butcher, comments, "The group has had another great term and the kids have had the opportunity to stretch their knowledge with maps and cooking skills. They have also tried a number of new activities including indoor climbing. We are as ever really interested in hearing from anyone who can help continue to provide these opportunities for the young people in our local area."

Beavers have been busy this term learning about space and aeroplanes with a fantastic visit to RNAS Yeovilton to see the helicopters.

Cubs recently had a great adventure at ready2climb as well as earning their fitness and physical recreation badges. Scouts have been cooking independently to prepare for camp, navigating, hiking and shelter building. The group has three exciting camps planned for the summer and we can't wait! If you or someone you know can get involved please contact Helen Wooldridge on [email protected] or 01963 440801

SPARKFORD PARISH COUNCIL Report

The last Parish Council meeting was held on Monday 13th April 2015. Planning decisions:

14/05542/FUL - Erection of light steel frame building to house a soft play area. Haynes

International Motor Museum, Cary Road, Sparkford. Permitted with conditions

15/00615/FUL. Demolition of existing front porch and single-storey garage & workshop to

side of property and the erection of porch & garage to front of property. Erection of

two-storey side extension and mixed single/two-storey rear extensions with internal re-

arrangements/access alterations. 57 Church Road, Sparkford. Permitted with conditions

Planning applications:

15/01276/OUT Outline application for the erection of a dwelling house and garaging

using existing access. Land adj Mill Cottage, Church Road Sparkford. (This application

was considered at the April PC meeting).

15/1666/FUL Change of use of part of field to garden, double garage to replace existing

single garage. Single storey extension to bungalow. Greystones, Weston Bampfylde Rd,

Weston Bampfylde

At the April Parish Council meeting attention was drawn to an increased problem of dog

littering along Church Road. Dog owners/walkers are kindly asked to tidy up after their

dog/s. There are ‘dog litter bins’ located around the Parish, please make use of them.

Thank you.

Also, the increase of 2.4% in the Parish Precept on the Council Tax bill was queried. The

best answer with the help of SSDC advice and working hard to keep it as simple as

possible is that “The Parish Council wanted to retain the same amount of funding in

2015/16 as it did in 2014/15. The Council Tax Reduction Scheme grant reduced by £80

which meant that the Parish Council had to increase its precept by £80. This, coupled

with a decrease in the tax base for Sparkford, resulted in an increase of £0.48 per Band D

equivalent dwelling which equated to a 2.4% increase.”

Your attention is also drawn to the Notice of Uncontested Elections. 5 Councilors have

been elected leaving 2 vacancies to be filled by co-option. There is a separate notice

seeking people to fill the places. Please do contact me or one of the Parish Councilors if

you have any questions about what is involved – we will help as much as we can.

The Annual Parish meeting and Parish Council meetings will be held on Monday 11th May

2015 7.30pm and 8.00pm respectively.

Queen Camel Tuesday Group April 2015

This month's talk was an archaeologist, talking about Roman Villas! Dry and boring you may think? Not a bit of it. John G. Smith grabbed us in the first minute by telling us that a villa had been found in Queen Camel and excavated a few seasons back. He then enthused for 40 minutes or so, propelling us back to the second century AD, with descriptions of the life of ordinary people at that time and bringing the talk alive with pictures, artefacts and clothing from the period. He knew his stuff and he knew how to sell it! What a joy. The variety of our meetings and the companionship one gets on a monthly basis (not to mention the lovely cakes,) for a very modest subscription, makes belonging to the Tuesday Group a great pleasure. Next month is so different again, with a 50's and 60's music quiz hosted by DJ Graham Gould. The Tuesday Group meets in the Queen Camel Memorial Hall on the first Tuesday of each month, at 10.00am. If you want any more information about our activities, please call Pat Champion on 01963 32264 or Marion Chapman on 01963 220741.

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) screening All men who turn 65 are invited for screening by the NHS in the year they turn 65. Men aged over 65 who have not been screened can contact the Somerset and North Devon AAA screening programme on 01823 344567 or [email protected] arrange to have a scan. Why is screening important? – If you have an aneurysm you will not usually notice any symptoms. This means you cannot tell if you have one, will not feel any pain and will probably not notice anything different. Screening is offered so that aneurysms can be found early and be monitored or treated. This greatly reduces the chances of an aneurysm causing serious problems. The easiest way to find out if you have an aneurysm is to have an ultrasound scan of your abdomen. I have a leaflet about this if you would like to know more If I can help in any way please do not hesitate to contact me on 07852 96 18 39 or by email [email protected]. The service is free and confidential Andrea de Berker, Village Agent

Bishop’s Message – MAY 2015 Living together beyond polling day In my early twenties my Christian faith was shaped by a holy, wise and kindly vicar of my local church in central London. Week by week, I absorbed his engaging sermons and inspiring bible studies and looking back I’m so thankful for the seeds of faith sown in that particular lively Anglican Church. But I remember being disappointed when I asked him how a Christian should engage with politics. His measured reply: ‘I don’t bother much – General Elections only vote one lot of sinners out – and another lot of sinners in!’ Well, whatever ‘lot of sinners’, local or national, are in or out of office come the 8th May, I believe we have a duty and responsibility to support and pray for them while using our hard won democratic freedom to continue in dialogue about the issues we care deeply about. From education and health to opportunities for the young, the fragmentation of communities or the protection of those most vulnerable, the list goes on because we hold before us a vison of nothing less than the Kingdom of God. As someone has said simply, ‘Politics is the art of living together. It’s a moral enterprise’. So let’s join in enthusiastically with this art of living together, making the intercessory prayer from Common Worship heartfelt: ‘Bless and guide Elizabeth our Queen; give wisdom to all in authority; and direct this and every nation in the ways of justice and peace; that we may honor one another and seek the common good.’ We do so as we move through to Ascension Day on 14th May. The strange, dramatic story of Jesus’ taken into heaven celebrates our crucified, risen and ascended Lord. Far from detaching himself from our flawed, sinful and suffering world, he wonderfully takes his humanity and our humanity into the very heart of the divine life. As Rowan Williams has said: ‘…the humanity we all know to be stained, wounded, imprisoned in various ways; this humanity – yours and mine – is still capable of being embraced by God, shot through with God’s glory, received and welcomed in the burning heart of reality itself.’ Whatever challenges we face in our communities and nation, our prayer, concern and longing must always be to help make God’s world one where the true value, worth and potential of every human being is welcomed, embraced and held dear. Archdeacon Nicola
