welcomeOnce again, Instituto Cervantes offers an ambitious and diverse program, which this year brings Gender Equality and Historical Memory to the main stage.

Among our exhibitions we encourage you to learn about one of the great poetic voices from the 20th century in Spain, Miguel Hernandez, as well as contemporary Catalan art brought to us by Colección Bassat in collaboration with La Nau-Gaudí. Travel along the history of the Galician exodus to New York, through the lens of photographer Alberto Martí or enjoy a new take on the comic genre thanks to the illustrations from the female authors of the new graphic novel.

Conferences led by renowned writers such as José Ángel Mañas or the Spanish Literature Prize winner Kirmen Uribe, who will link science and literature in a discussion with neuroscientist Rafael Yuste. Historians such as Rafael Rojas or Emilio Cueto will bring us closer to present day Cuba, and specialists like Susana Martinez Vidal, will explain Frida Kahlo’s relevance in current fashion.

We will screen films from periods such as “New Galician Cinema”, “Once Upon a Time in Almeria” and “Sephardic Cinema Festival.” We will have the pleasure of hearing Joan Manuel Serrat, who will delight us with a concert. Our wine tastings and book clubs will continue. And for the first time, we are excited to launch our tango workshops.

All of these events aim to share the cultural wealth from the Hispanic-American world and to contribute, at the same time, to a more pluralist, tolerant and inclusive society. We look forward to seeing you!

Spanish writer Miguel Hernández is also known as the poet of the land. Unfairly undiscovered by the international public, this exhibition offers a portrait of his life through half a hundred original pieces. This body of work reveals more information about his education, literary influences and political commitment during the Civil War, as well as about his friendship with other universal writers such as Pablo Neruda, Juan Ramón Jiménez, Federico García Lorca and Ramón Sijé.

The scholar Adriana Méndez Rodenas and the artist Aurora De Armendi will present their new book, which pays tribute to Rupestrian Sculptures (1981), a body of work created by the artist Ana Mendieta in the national park Escaleras de Jaruco (Havana). The low-relief sculptures, carved on the walls of a cave, evoke the Taíno Indians‘ belief system and is the most intimate and revealing series of her work. This constitutes a live testimony of the Cuban cultural memory.

In the 90’s Spanish democracy seemed finally settled and the youth grew up taking advantage from what their elders had accomplished. This period of hedonism and consumerism, usually identified along with the Movida Madrileña, whose evolution has led to an institutional crisis that still lingers. Writer, José Ángel Mañas, will talk about how literature, music, cinema, politics and society converged in order to develop a period of time quite unknown, but crucial, of Spanish history.

In recent years, many female illustrators, cartoonists, creators and graphic humorists have succeeded in the male dominated graphic novel genre by publishing great stories told from a new point of view that demystified themes that are traditionally linked to women. Achieving gender equality by 2030 requires taking urgent measures to eliminate the root causes of the discrimination. For that purpose it is necessary to broaden the framework of actions, since the data show that the gaps in access to employment, wage and positions of responsibility are broadened when variables such as maternity are taken into account.

Since the arrival of new digital technology we can discuss about a Fourth Industrial Revolution that is broader, deeper, and systemic than the others. The challenges that have developed from these changes, most of which will fully hatch in the following years, are colossal and affect the economy altogether. This is why it’s crucial to become aware of the magnitude and repercussion of this change. According to the report “The Industry Gender Gap. Women and Work in the Fourth Industrial Revolution” from the World Economic Forum, when applicable, these changes will affect men and women differently.

Women and Work in the Fourth Industrial Revolution” del World Economic Forum, estos cambios en el empleo van a afectar de manera desigual a hombres y mujeres.

Since the late 19th century, the phenomenon of Galician emigration in New York has been consolidated. Its internal composition and ease for social integration, photographic archives of galician families, its associative expressions, its role during the Civil War as a support for republican exile, as well as its evolution in the second half of the 20th century, are some of the topics that will be discussed in this round table.

When a society doesn’t understand its own historical processes it becomes less participative and its members are distanced from each other. In a democracy, there is no single memory but a group of memories that must be considered. Therefore, it is crucial to listen to each other and to develop a culture of dialog together with a critical judgement in order to build stronger and more supportive societies. This talk will address the state of affairs in Galicia, where many associations are working for this matter.

The history of transatlantic relationships has been influenced by times of growth, as well as periods of conflict: the Crash of 1929 or the bankrupt of the Lehman Brothers in 2009 are two examples. These crises crossed oceans, but their solutions did too. The International Congress on historical links between Spain and North America will be focused on discussing the causes, consequences and answers that have taken place at a transatlantic level in difficult times.

Cine de rumberas, genre that bloomed in Mexico on the 40’s and 50’s, turned Cuban rumba into an actual melodrama, mixing it with the slums and the cabaret. Also known for launching the careers of statuesque bombshells Ninón Sevilla, María Antonieta Pons, Amalia Aguilar and Rosa Carmina, to whom the press so-called as “The Caribbean Cyclone”, “The Golden Venus”, “The Atomic Bomb” and “The Woman of Fire”. Over time, these films became cult classics, touring film festivals in France, Brazil and Germany, while the Cuban rumba was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

with francisco reyero and MarK levine If Eastwood had not accepted a strange offer to shoot a western in Almeria (Spain), his career would not be the same. There, he found the role that catapulted him; a laconic, cold, and distant character with a great sense of humor and humanity. This was made possible thanks to the great chemistry that arose with the then also-unknown Italian director, Sergio Leone.

We celebrate 20 years of the Instituto Cervantes Wine Seminar in New York, headed by wine writer and educator Helio San Miguel. Our successful wine program covers all the major areas of this art: grape varieties, winemakers, and wine styles of Spain. In addition, the Instituto Cervantes Wine Program has been a privileged witness of the transformation of the country’s wine landscape, led by a new generation of winemakers who recovered forgotten grape varieties, discovered new regions, and crafted innovative wines, from outstanding values to internationally sought-after cult wines that have garnered the highest accolades from the most influential critics. To commemorate this milestone we offer a celebratory series of nine wine tasting seminars that will provide a comprehensive view of the changes in Spain’s wine landscape in the last twenty years, with an outstanding selection of wine.

F E B . 2 1 S T : sherry treasures: vos and vorsSherry is Spain’s most original, unique, and imitated wine creation, and the VOS and VORS designations distinguish its oldest and most hallowed wines. This seminar will provide a thorough understanding of the misunderstood Sherry region focusing on the best and oldest VOS and VORS amontillados, palo cortados, olorosos and PXs.

Wine Tasting Seminars in English Jan.-Mar.

wINE SEMINARS

F E B . 2 8 T H : north by northwestIn the northwestern corner of Spain white wines shine. Since the late 1990s, reds from the rediscovered Mencía grape joined them. Its old vines star winemakers such as Alvaro Palacios and Raúl Pérez, put on the world wine map the remote Bierzo area and the region of Ribeira Sacra. Their top wines have swiftly gone from being almost unknown to producing unique reds. We will try distinctive wines of the northwestern corner of Spain which have achieved cult status. M A R C H 7 T H : in the land of woMenOne of the most overlooked trends of the current wine revolution in Spain is the significant number of women who are owners or winemakers in some of the top wineries. From Rioja to Jerez, through Ribera del Duero and Priorat, some of the very best wines of Spain are crafted by women. In this seminar we will get to know Spain’s top female winemakers and taste their wines.

M A R C H 1 4 T H : focus on priorat2013 has been hailed as the best vintage in Priorat’s history, earning the highest accolades from top critics. In this blind tasting we will compare some of the top priorats with wines from other Mediterranean climates from around the world and other regions in Spain. M A R C H 2 8 T H : focus on the dueroOne of Ribera del Duero’s top winemakers said that 2014 was the best vintage he has ever seen in the area. That’s a lofty statement, but a few 2014 Riberas and Toros tasted recently seem to support this perception. In this final seminar we will sample some 2014s from the areas along the Duero River and compare them with wines from other regions of Spain and abroad.
