Early Spanish art was strictly regulated by the Crown and the Church.

The Church needed paintings done for cathedrals and other religious reasons.

The Crown on the other hand needed painters and other artists for the many portraits that they wanted of the Royal Family.

These paintings and other forms of art can be described as creatively limited due to the demands made by the Crown and the Church.

CHARACTERISTICS

Page 5: Spanish Art!

However, by the 17th century Spanish art took an entirely new direction and became much more creative and free.

A good example of this can be seen by the use of impressionism being used by Spanish artists.

What is impressionism?

CHARACTERISTICS

Page 6: Spanish Art!

Recently, Spanish artists have been creating their own forms of art.

The best example of this is cubism, a style of painting that was pioneered by the Spanish artist Pablo Picasso.

Cubism is now one of the most popular painting techniques used today.

This painting is a good example of the limited creativity available to Spanish artists before the 17th century.

You can see this through the fact that it is a portrait and is a religious painting.

VOCABULARY- IMPRESSIONISM - A late 19th century style of painting characterized by brief

brush strokes to represent the effect of light on objects. It was also the aim of impressionist artists to capture feelings or emotions in their paintings rather than an accurate depiction.
