Description: Conducted in Spanish, will further develop the audio-lingual skills that thestudents have acquired in their early Spanish language training. Emphasis will be placed onmaintaining ideas and concepts in actual conversation situations, taken from topics of mostinterest to students.

The class will be conducted entirely in Spanish. There will be daily interaction inSpanish (lecture presentations, conversation, questions, exercises, games, etc.) that has asits primary purpose the acquisition of communicative skills in the language. The goal of thiscourse is to facilitate communication in Spanish. Students will view and discusscontemporary movies and video clips, read on-line and Xeroxed texts, all in Spanish. Newvocabulary will be introduced and studied. Students will discuss movies, current events andpersonal or social issues. Students will also participate in small group activities and give oral

    presentations.

    Prerequisite: Spanish 202 or equivalent

Required materials:a GOOD Spanish-English dictionary. On-line translation programs are notoriously incompleteand inadequateaccess to on-line materials (class blog, NULU)

    Classroom behavior and expectations:

    1. Be on time. Arriving late is rude and disrespectful to me and to the rest of the class. 3 late arrivalsequals 1 absence.

    2. Spanish is a spoken language and the only way for me to know if and when you re speaking is ifyoure here in class. Therefore there is an attendance policy:

    * you have 3 unexcused absences [excused absences are for College-sanctioned events and mustbe accompanied by prior notification]

    * after 8 absences I reserve the right to automatically fail you, and you should drop the class.

    3. CELL PHONES OFF!!! LEAVE IT VISIBLE ON TOP OF YOUR DESK.If I see you texting, I will consider it an insult [since youre obviously not paying attention to me] and atestament to your rudeness and immaturity.

    4. Cheating and plagiarism are serious offenses and will be punished accordingly--F/F for cheating onyour transcript/vivisection [look it up].

    5. NO GUM SNAPPING! It really gets on my nerves and it will probably cause me to subconsciouslyhate you and lower your grade. Why risk it?

    6. Please come to class prepared, or stay home. DONT EMAIL ME ASKING FOR THEASSIGNMENT OR MATERIAL COVERED. THATS WHAT THE BLOG PAGE IS FOR. ITS NOTON ...ANGEL.

    7. I have a somewhat dry, somewhat snarky, somewhat obnoxious sense of humor. Get used to it.

    GRADING:

40% participation: are you actively contributing to the conversation either in your group orto the class as a whole? Do you repeat what someone else just said or are you furthering thediscussion? Do you consistently make the same errors or are you learning, self-correctingand advancing?25% presentations: use of vocabulary, proper verb tenses, coverage of the material10% vocabulary and journals: you should maintain a daily (or 3 times a week) log of newwords learned and hopefully put into practice; you should summarize the material discussedin class, what you thought of the topics presented by others, what you may have disagreedwith or not gotten an opportunity to express. All in Spanish.15% in-class writings: there will be occasional brief, spontaneous writing exercises, depending on the topic at hand20% final report: the culmination of your hard work and effort. More details to come.
