Spandana April 2020 2
Dear Colleagues, Let me take this opportunity to wish you all a safe and healthy life. It is my pleasure and privilege to share with you the new and refreshing SPANDANA , our own newsletter. We, as a Chapter have completed 19 years and during these years of our journey, we have achieved quite a few milestones. We are thankful to our seniors, both volunteers and the leaders who have steered this organization for the last 19 years.
There has been an urge from the members of PMIPCC to make this chapter more vibrant, more responsive and relevant for them and their professional career. Hence it was decided to restart one of our flagships – SPANDANA . We desire that the new Spandana will prove to be a platform where all members can participate and share their project experiences, their impression of contemporary books, their views on work-life balance and so on. Be it a tech article, a project case -study, a humorous sketch, or a moving ode – they all count. We certainly do not wish Spandana to be a one-way channel or chapter mouthpiece. We are confident that it would serve the desired purpose and we look forward to your contribution and suggestions to take this initiative to the next level. Lastly, the COVID-19 virus has caused immense damage to business, commerce and industrial production. It has shaken the way we work and live and restricted all of us to the four walls. As agonizing and distressing as this isolation is, it is our only option to remain healthy and virus-free. I urge all of you to stay safe and strong.
Happy Reading.
B Madhav Reddy

Women in Project Management
omen have always played an integral role in the way the world has moved forward. Be it, at
home or corporate, the dedication and the efforts of women have been commendable.
Women have shown great interest in helping the community to grow as PMs. The books, presentations,
papers, etc. by them that are coming forth are helping thousands of aspirants to clear PMP exams.
There are many women globally leading initiatives to shine a spotlight on women, including one of the
largest initiatives launched on Twitter in 2017 by Dr Kirstin Ferguson called #CelebratingWomen, which
resulted in a book in 2018 called Woman Kind.
Cartwright & Gales (1995) studies found that “women have significantly more of a team management
style than men, characterized by a high regard for people, and high regard for task. They m a y a l s o
h a v e a m o r e h e i g h t e n e d s e n s e o f awareness and greater sense of cultural incongruence and
gender exclusion.
Empathy/Compassion – It can be argued that women are more sensitive in caring and showing
concern for their staff than men. They can be seen as more capable in interpreting problems and
bringing order to their area and are better able to maintain tight control – crucial areas of project
management. Very similar skills can be seen in both motherhood and project management. When
managing projects we see tradeoffs between cost, time and scope. When women manage their lives, we
see them balancing household tasks, activities of the children and official work.
The rise of female project managers is leading to new
approaches and how projects are carried out and
managed. This involves leadership style, meeting style,
communication style, team composition and
development, motivation of people, dealing with
complexity, coping with challenges and risks, project
reporting, and so on

I would recommend this book to every
leader and project manager, who needs to take a decision in complex scenarios. In the context of thinking, decision making and discussions this book can provide a powerful insight that, at present might be obscured by the ‘cognitive biases (heuristics)’. It provides a recipe to train our brain, avoid the ‘heuristics’ and understand the statistics to take an informed decision.
The book discusses about two types of thinking: -
After reading this book, one will come to a realisation that, we as humans are not as rational as we think.
Chapter II “Heuristics and Biases” is the interesting part of this book. It delves into how the brain evolved to form biases by heuristics, so that it can work frugally. Personally, I like “anchoring effect (is when a value is often set by anchors or imprints which, we use as mental reference points when making decisions)” which, was showcased rather beautifully in the movie “Focus (2015)”.
I hope that, the concepts discovered, documented and discussed by the author in the book, led to an alternative form of indoctrination which, when one gets trained to understand one’s weaknesses, will help to take a better decision.

Book Review: Thinking, Fast and Slow
System 2 • Effortful, slow and conscious eg. Multi-
plication of 672 X 758, driving in a new place to reach one’s destination.
• Reliable, as one has to analyse and re-
ally apply one’s brain to obtain the so-lution.

“A reliable way to make
people believe in falsehoods is frequent repetition, because familiarity is not easily distinguished from truth. Authoritarian institutions and marketers have always known this fact”.
System 1 • Is automatic, fast and unconscious eg.
Multiplication of 2 X 2, a regular drive to home from work.
• Prone to errors, as it is developed over
the history of human evolution and de-pends on heuristics or biases.
