The Costa Blanca has a well-established tourist industry and is a long-time favourite with both British and German visitors to beach resorts such as Benidorm. But it’s not all kiss me quick hats and package deals. This is a varied

and diverse region boasting its own fair share of stunning scenery, historic cities and pine covered mountains stretching along most of the coast. Fields of almond and orange trees are everywhere and there are some traditional towns and villages waiting to be explored. And, of course, excellent golf courses!

The largely unspoilt Costa del Azahar is one of Spain’s least known costas but it is also one of the most beautiful. Stretching between Alcanar in the north and Almenara in the south, it is known in English as the Orange Blossom Coast because of the abundance of orange orchards which provide the backdrop to some of the region’s loveliest beaches.

Numerous nature reserves and protected park areas await to be discovered where the terrain and surroundings are perfect for walking and for those who love the great outdoors. And interesting places to visit include a wealth of little known gems including picturesque Morella, a medieval hilltop town enclosed by 14thC walls, ancient Vinarós where you can sample the best langoustines in Spain, and Càlig, a quiet little village on a hill, 8k inland from Benicarló.

Little known by the British but a popular year round destination for the Spanish, the Costa de la Luz faces the Atlantic Ocean west of Gibraltar all the way up to the mouth of the Guadiana river just past Huelva. Otherwise known as the Coast of Light it is a fabulous coastline home to historic towns and laid back resorts where unspoilt fine golden beaches are often backed by pine trees.

Here you will find some wonderful places of interest including the beautiful old city of Cádiz - a favourite port of call for cruise liners; Jeréz, probably the most quintessential of all Spanish towns and famous for its sherry, dancing horses and flamenco; Chiclana de la Frontera with its dolls and wine bodegas that produce wonderful dry whites and muscatels; horse racing on the beach at Sanlúcar de Barrameda and charming Puerto Santa Maria which, along with Jeréz and Sanlúcar, forms part of the sherry triangle.

The Costa del Sol is renowned as being the most cosmopolitan and affluent of all the Spanish Costas, and the golf hub of Europe. The scenery is fabulous with mountains on one side and the Mediterranean on the other. The choice of leisure facilities is superb too including picturesque marinas, museums, restaurants, casinos, water sports and great sightseeing and shopping opportunities in lively towns such as Malaga and, of course, Gibraltar.

With a year round balmy climate, it’s no wonder the Algarve is Portugal’s premier holiday destination. It has lots to see and do including many first class beaches and a rich interesting heritage as well as world renowned golf courses. And, even though it is heavily developed in places, away from the coast there are plenty of picturesque towns and villages to explore where daily life has hardly changed and commercialism doesn’t exist.

Apartamentos Sol y MarCalpe, Costa Blanca

A short drive north of Benidorm, in the heart of the Costa Blanca, Calpe is easily reached from the A7 motorway and is an idyllic location in which to spend the cooler months. Its typical Mediterranean climate boasts, on average, 325 sunny days a year - plenty of time to enjoy its beautiful blue flag beaches which are separated by the towering rock of Ilfach, the town’s most distinguishing feature.

The rock is actually a nature reserve and the climb to the summit is a pretty hairy one although the reward when you get there is well worth it - magnificent panoramic views that reach as far as Ibiza on a good day.

Originally a fishing village, Calpe has grown over the years into a popular family resort in summer and a favourite with expats, particularly the English and Germans, out of season, but it remains a select destination without the brashness and commercialisation of its bigger neighbours. The town is an interesting mix of modern and old, rich in history and archaeological finds, whilst the beach front promenade is backed with a splendid array of bars and restaurants that cater for all nationalities - during your stay do try the local ice cream made with delicious regional almonds - Jijona - or the local fish and rice dishes.

There is also the old town and the lovely

marina that sits alongside the fishing port where you can take a boat ride around the rock or even along the coast to Benidorm. Or, heading north, the holiday towns of Moraira and Javea are only a short drive.

Fabulously located right alongside the beach in the centre of Calpe, the superb Apartamentos del Mar are part of the 9 storey Gran Hotel Sol y Mar (for adults only) so you have the benefit of hotel facilities whilst also enjoying the freedom of your own space and home from home comforts.

With the majestic Mount Montgo as a backdrop, Javea is free of high rise buildings and divided into 3 main parts - the old town, the port and the beach area. Steeped in history the picturesque old town with its narrow winding streets and smart white-washed buildings centres around the Medieval church of San Bartolome and hosts the weekly Thursday market; the bustling port area, which is still a working fishing port, has lots of open air restaurants and bars so is a popular meeting point; and a palm-fringed promenade backs the long El Arenal beach which is where most visitors head first. For anyone who likes golf, there is a local course just outside town.

A short drive south of the beach is a rocky outlet called Cabo de la Nao which has stunning views back over Javea and as far as Ibiza on a clear day. Outside town, following the road to the San Antonio cape, interesting sites include the monastery of Nuestra Señora de los Angeles and old windmills dominate the landscape. There are also plenty of other places to visit a little further afield including Denia, Gandia and the Moorish fortress of Guadalest - a rock-carved tunnel takes you through

to a stunning old village and castle from where the view at the top looks down over a beautiful blue reservoir.

The charming Aparthotel Pinasol is in a residential location opposite wooded parkland, 2k from the seafront and 5k from the old town so you will need to use your car when staying here.

The 34 apartments are split between two 2 storey buildings, 1 with lift, at the far end of the gardens. The pool is in lovely well maintained grounds and although not open during the winter, guests are welcome to use the area for relaxing. There is also a fitness room in the reception building (1st floor).

The nearest supermarket is about 800m and there is a very good restaurant within walking distance as well as a friendly bar/café in the park opposite which stays open late. The park also has a public bbq area. Free Wi-Fi is available. Weekly clean includes linen/towels change. Some apartments are adapted for the disabled. Garage parking 60€/month or free street parking. If English speaking locals and lots of English visitors are high on your list of priorities, then perhaps El Campello is not the place for you. Lying 13k north of Alicante, it’s a quiet, relaxing resort with a proud history and a charm all its own having resisted the lure of mass tourism.

Ideal for couples and families alike, this traditional Spanish fishing town has a long sandy beach backed by a promenade - perfect for evening strolls - and a lovely harbour and port where weekly fish auctions are a regular focal point.

Crystal clear waters make it a popular place for watersports, and for those who enjoy hiking and cycling the surrounding hilly countryside has some good marked routes. Or if you prefer the city, a tram ride to Alicante only takes about 20 minutes and is not expensive.

Pueblo Acantilado Suites is 6k north of El Campello and is a most charming village complex built on a hillside overlooking the sea.

Gently stepped cobbled walkways connect the various areas of Pueblo Acantilado so people with low mobility may struggle although upon arrival the staff will accompany you and your luggage to your apartment by golf buggy if required. In fact, the staff are exceptionally helpful

and friendly so if you require anything at all during your stay, please do ask as they will be only too happy to help.

Facilities on site include three restaurants, a bar, coffee shop, tennis court, small grocery shop, mini golf, table tennis and an outdoor pool and sun terrace. There is also a small spa centre (entrance fee applies) with two jacuzzis, a sauna and Turkish bath plus a gym. Free parking by entrance, or underground garage within complex (5€ per night). Free Wi-Fi (restricted bandwidth). End of stay cleaning, bed linen and towels provided. Cleaning (not kitchen area) including linen/towel change 10€. Pets not accepted. The apartments are all in small blocks of 4 (larger blocks for the studios) dotted around the pool and ‘village’ square and all are similarly furnished. The kitchenettes are basically equipped so are perhaps not for the keenest of cooks but all have a fridge, 2 ring hob, microwave/grill, toaster, coffee machine and a washing machine. Please ask reception if you require a kettle or any other cooking utensils.

Denia is an old town with a long history which has developed over the years into a delightful cosmopolitan resort that enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate, making it an ideal year-round destination.

Once the centre of the raisin growing industry it sits at the foot of a hill below the thousand year old castle from where there are incredible views across town and the surrounding area.

The raisins, which are a local delicacy, are still grown here but the main attraction these days is tourism and it has much to offer.

There are both sandy beaches and rocky coves so watersports are a popular pastime and, as well as the harbour with its colourful fishing boats, there’s an impressive modern marina dotted with bars and restaurants, ideal for sitting and watching the world go by.

Away from the seafront there’s also the old town, and for those who like to shop, the tree-lined main street has a string of designer boutiques. There’s plenty of golf too with Denia having its own course plus several others within close proximity.

The Ona Ogisaka Garden Aparthotel is set amongst landscaped gardens in a residential area just 200m from the Marineta beach and a half hour stroll from Denia town centre.

There are 162 apartments in six 4-storey blocks, each with lifts, built around a central three level lagoon pool alongside the bar/restaurant terrace. There is also a well-being centre with indoor pool, gym, sauna and jacuzzi (all included in the price) where exercise classes and beauty treatments are available for an extra charge, and bicycles can be hired from reception.

A small supermarket plus a couple of bars and eateries (serving cheap menus del dia) are just around the corner. Wi-Fi is 40€/month per device. Free street parking nearby. Weekly cleaning and linen/towel change. Pets not accepted. Small welcome pack with sponge, washing up liquid, water, milk, butter, jam and sugar. A credit card number is taken as a deposit.

Apartments are all identically furnished and whilst perhaps the kitchens are not equipped for the keenest of cooks, they are adequate for the preparation of basic meals - should you find a certain utensil is missing or you need a kettle or an extra saucepan, please do ask as the management are very accommodating and will be happy to assist where they can. Benissa is one of the area’s oldest towns and has a well preserved centre with lovely 17th/18th century town houses and impressive historic buildings as well as a beautiful main square, quaint back streets full of small interesting shops and boutiques plus a lively Saturday morning market.

Moraira has a superb marina, a pretty town centre and a lovely sandy cove at El Portet as well as a larger beach beside the road to Calpe.

Calpe is a true family resort and a favourite with expats. It has lots of shops, a delightful old quarter with narrow streets hiding all sorts of charming bars and restaurants, plus two superb sandy beaches either side of the famous Ifach rock, backed by a charming paved promenade.

Approximately 15 minutes by car, Parques Casablanca is almost equidistant from Calpe, Moraira and Benissa’s old town so is an ideal location for staying on the Costa Blanca. Just a short drive north of Valencia this pretty gem of a resort is locally known as Little Venice and is a purpose-built, quiet oasis for those who want to explore and access the big city but not stay there. It’s a popular location at weekends for the Spanish and is slowly beginning to welcome Germans and Scandinavians too but, so far, very few English people have discovered its charm.

The small harbour, which was once a thriving sea port, has several meandering inlets around the water’s edge which are backed by beautiful coloured houses of all shapes and sizes. Next door to the small but popular resort of Peñiscola on the Orange Blossom Coast, Benicarló is much quieter and less touristic than its neighbour but is a great base for an out of season stay on the Costa del Azahar. It has a long sandy beach, an interesting historic quarter where you can visit the old prison which is now a museum, and a lovely little working port/marina around which there are some fabulous bars and restaurants where menus feature freshly caught local fish and seafood.

It’s also well known for its artichokes as well as its orange groves and if you are lucky enough to be visiting in January, you can enjoy the artichoke festival. Market day is Wednesday morning. Take a walk along the promenade to the far end of Peñiscola stopping at one of the many bars and restaurants and then visit the castle where recent episodes of Games of Thrones were filmed.

This small complex is in a residential area set back from the main road midway between Benicarló and Peñiscola, just 100m from the beach. The owners are charming and even though they do not speak English they are keen to welcome you as well as your pets.

There are 30 apartments, mainly on the ground or 1st floor, within a group

Puerto de Santa María is probably best known for being part of the famous sherry triangle, but there’s lots more to this relatively unknown resort. As well as several lovely beaches it also has a pretty old town and a number of interesting buildings and attractions including a fabulous castle, a cathedral and the 2nd largest bullring in Spain after Seville.

It is also well placed for visiting other parts of the region including the sherry centre of Jeréz, the relatively new resort of Novo Sancti Petri, Seville and Cadiz - you can drive to the port and park and then take the ferry for only 6 euros return.

The fabulous Las Suites apartments overlook the picturesque marina in Puerto Sherry, a small suburb of Puerto de Santa María. A colourful development of traditional houses stands to one side beyond which is a small secluded beach (200m) and there are a few bars, restaurants and a small grocer’s shop on the way too. On the other side you’ll find the yacht club and a large hotel as well as a couple more restaurants.

Sitio de Calahonda is a large tourist development between Marbella and Fuengirola popular with the British and other visitors who holiday here or own timeshare properties. Stretching from the coast into the hills behind the A7, it’s an excellent base for exploring the Costa del Sol as it is pretty central.

A 2 minute drive to the west is the picturesque port of Puerto Cabopino where you’ll find some of the coast’s most popular restaurants whilst driving east brings you to Miraflores, a golf and bowls resort beyond which is the beautiful white-washed village of Mijas Pueblo, one of the jewels of the Costa del Sol. There are also at least 10 golf courses within a 10k radius.

El Porton is a residential area high up in the hills of Calahonda midway between Marbella and Fuengirola. It’s a calm and quiet location a short drive from the commercial centre (4k) and the beach (3k) and, on a clear day, the views are wonderful, especially from the small Christian monument just beyond the complex from where you can see the whole coast including Africa and Gilbraltar.

Your neighbours are more likely to be Spanish than English and your pet will be very welcome!

The apartments are in one of several south facing, 3 storey buildings with lift within a residential community and the spacious accommodation is nicely furnished although it does not have central heating (2 electric heaters provided). The outdoor pool on site is closed out of season.

Close to Puerto Banus and just west of Marbella, Nueva Andalucia is a sprawling residential area of traditional Andalucian houses that has the facilities and amenities of a town but not the heavy traffic and noise that usually goes with it.

There are plenty of sporting activities and the area is also great for golfers as there are some fabulous courses surrounded by stunning scenery with the Sierra de Ronda mountains as a backdrop.

There’s an international range of restaurants including what is reputedly the best Indian in the region plus a casino, 1 of only 2 on the Costa del Sol. For culture and places of interest, you are well placed not only for Marbella and Puerto Banus, but also San Pedro, Benahavis, Ronda and Estepona.

Built on several levels in the style of a large Andalucian village, this great complex is close to the golf course in Nueva Andalucia, 6k from Marbella town and 2k from the ever popular Puerto Banus.

There are approximately 200 apartments, some residential, in 2 and 3 storey buildings in beautiful sub-tropical gardens complete

with fountains, a fabulous waterfall and 3 swimming pools, 1 of which is heated and covered for use out of season. Please note that the grounds are tiered and linked by sets of steps which make the complex unsuitable for those with limited mobility.

Apartamentos Marina Turquesa Nerja, Costa del Sol

Nerja is at the eastern tip of the Costa del Sol and is just one of a few towns to maintain its character and not fall victim to high rise buildings so often seen in the larger resorts along this coastline. Sheltered by the impressive Sierra Almijara mountains it enjoys a temperate climate and has very little rain so is a good destination both in and out of season.

The old quarter is virtually unchanged with its narrow winding streets of whitewashed houses and their wrought iron terraces adorned with geraniums and there is, of course, the Balcon de Europa, Nerja’s famous promenade that stretches along the clifftop edge from where the panoramic views of the Mediterranean are just fabulous!

You have the choice of several golden beaches and 3k from the centre are the fascinating caves which house 20,000 year old paintings and other pre-historic remains. One of these huge natural caverns has even been transformed into a concert hall! Whilst here a visit to one of Spain’s most beautiful villages is also a must - Frigiliana is up in the mountains and really is worth a visit.

This attractive complex is in a quiet residential area a couple of streets back from the main road as you drive into Nerja. The 20 apartments are in two 2-storey Andalucian buildings surrounding beautiful gardens and a small unheated outdoor pool. There is also an indoor pool, fitness room, sauna (10€) and guest lounge with pool table, internet corner, tv and a small library of English books.

A large, well-stocked supermarket is just across the road and it’s a 20 minute downhill walk (800m) to the popular Burriana beach where you will also find a selection of bars and restaurants along the promenade. The town centre and famous Balcon de Europa is 1.5k.

These lovely apartments are on the ground or 1st floor (no lift) and each has a terrace overlooking the pool - a lovely spot for breakfast or a pre-dinner drink. All similar in layout, they are spacious, bright and nicely furnished with well equipped kitchens and bathrooms.

Benalmádena is split into three very distinct areas: Benalmádena Pueblo (the old village), Arroyo de la Miel (the busy commercial centre which separates the village from the seafront), and Benalmádena Costa, the coastal area that is a popular holiday destination for British and other foreign visitors.

Benalmádena Costa is home to the majority of attractions which include the promenade that stretches the length of the resort and on into neighbouring Torremolinos. Along here you’ll find the wonderful Puerto Marina, where there are many restaurants, bars and shops, and the Chiringuitos - popular beach bars where you can get some of the best and freshest seafood and fish around.

Tivoli World theme park and the cable car are both in Arroyo whilst the old village still has a traditional Spanish feel with its white washed houses, winding cobbled streets and picturesque squares. There are also a number of golf courses as well as many other sporting activities around.

Sahara Sunset Club is a group of typically Andalucian white-washed buildings centered around a couple of outdoor pools in a quiet street just a short walk from Paloma park and the seafront.

Well located at one end of the lovely beach, the apartments are in 6 clusters of 3 or 4

Away from the big, commercialised resorts that are associated with the Costa del Sol, Estepona is one of only a few towns that has succeeded in keeping its traditional Andalucian charm and character despite having opened its doors to tourism. Its narrow cobbled streets are lined with quaint little shops and authentic tapas bars, and the choice of restaurants around its marina is huge. There is a regular Sunday market - a good place to buy crafts and leather gifts. The beaches are well kept with many boasting blue flag status, and we mustn’t forget the golf - Estepona’s course is one of the most popular and challenging in the area.

A short drive inland (17k) takes you to Casares, an impossibly picturesque village where the houses look like randomly placed sugar cubes and narrow, winding streets lead up to the old fortress and church on top of the hill from where the views across to Africa and Gibraltar are absolutely stunning.

This quiet laid back resort is midway between Malaga to the east and Estepona to the west and only a short stroll from the beach. A footbridge over the A7 takes you to Cancelada village where you will find a

This popular resort with direct access via steps to the beach is built around a large curved outdoor pool overlooking the sea and set amongst attractive, tiered gardens full of sub-tropical plants, palm trees and water features.

With the beach and excellent amenities on your doorstep, Mijas Costa is a 12k stretch of coastal development south west of Fuengirola and includes the village and small resort of La Cala de Mijas as well as the commercial and residential areas of Sitio de Calahonda and Las Lagunas amongst others. All four are part and parcel of Mijas, a quaint, mountainside village 10k inland where beautiful whitewashed buildings are steeped in old Andalucian traditions and customs.

La Cala de Mijas was originally a fishing community which over the years has grown into a small charming village with good facilities including cafes, shops and street markets whilst Sitio de Calahonda and Las Lagunas, popular with British expats, are more residential and have commercial centres, banks, supermarkets, bars and restaurants for everyday living.

Much of Mijas Costa has been constructed in the last twenty years or so but it is well situated to explore the Costa del Sol. So, if you seek more culture and historical surroundings, you can easily hop on a bus or drive to nearby places such as vibrant Marbella, Fuengirola, delightful Mijas Pueblo, Coin, Alhaurin el Grande and Malaga.

Across the road from the beach and surrounded by lush green foliage, the

fabulous Los Amigos Beach Club is an environmentally conscious, relaxed resort centred around an unheated outdoor pool amongst manicured gardens. At the western end of the Costa del Sol and only 12k from Gibraltar, Alcaidesa was originally built back in the 90s as a residential development for people who worked in Algeciras and La Linea but didn’t wish to live there. More recently though it attracts those who own 2nd homes here as well as expats and an ever growing tourist industry where visitors come not only to play golf on the two very good courses but also to enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

Unlike most of the lively Costa del Sol, it’s not commercialised and is generally a quiet, laid back community. There are two hotels, and a small square down by one of 3 local beaches has a couple of bars, restaurants, a small shop and a pizzeria. For more shops and amenities, the nearest town is San Roque (8k).

There is plenty to see in the area including Sotogrande, another residential area with a nice marina port, and Castellar de la Frontera, a typical Andalusian village with a 13th century castle up on the hill and great terrain for walking or hiking. And of course, it’s a great location for visiting Gibraltar which is only a short drive from here.

In an idyllic setting surrounded by mountains and the undulating greens of the links golf course – the clubhouse, which has a good restaurant and bar, is

opposite - these lovely apartments are in Nueva Alcaidesa, a short ride up from Alcaidesa (3k). Built on a hillside the accommodation is in several 3 storey buildings either side of a small road and is part residential. Large communal areas have well-tended gardens that include 3 seasonal outdoor pools (closed in winter). Due to the resort’s location there are slopes and steps so it is not best suited to anyone with walking difficulties.

Each building has a lift from the underground garage to the accommodation and there are just one or two apartments on each floor. These are all spacious and furnished with style whilst being well decorated and equipped to a very good standard.

On the left bank of the river Guadalfeo and known as one of Spain’s unspoilt white villages, Vélez de Benaudalla nestles in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, a short drive from the coast. It’s actually a small but charming working town that has retained much of its Moorish past including numerous fountains and roadside streams and is where local people generally don’t speak English so you’ll get a real sense of Spanish living staying here. You’ll find everything you need including a chemist, bank, bakery and other small shops plus, of course, a good choice of restaurants and bars - just wait until you see the size of the tapa that comes free with your drink! There is also the lovely Jardin Nazari, known locally as Generalife Chico, a fabulous lush garden of stepped terraces, fountains, waterfalls and cypress trees from where the view over the Guadalfeo valley is just beautiful.

The area is popular with climbers, cyclists and ramblers so if you get chance and you like walking, there is a great 6k walking path alongside the river (600m) or, for those who like a bit of a challenge, a steep climb and lots of steps takes you to the ruins of the 16thC Moorish castle that sits above the town - we’re told the view fully justifies the effort of getting there! Further afield and with good road access, the coast is a ten minute drive, the larger town of Motril is 17k and fabulous Granada, with its impressive

Alhambra, is also within easy reach.

Apartamentos Vélez Nazari is a large but attractive complex on a quiet street at one end of town. At its centre is an outdoor pool (open May-end Oct) and well kept, pretty grounds complete with fountains and tree-adorned pathways beautifully floodlit at night. A second block of apartments with its own rooftop pool is across the road as is a small private gym which guests are welcome to use.

The apartments, some of which are residential, are in 3 storey buildings, each with lift. Layouts vary and 1st floor single level or duplex apartments (with roof terrace) are available so please let us know your requirements when booking. Ground floor apartments with a patio area tend to be darker in winter so are not recommended for a break at that time of year but if you would prefer one of these just let us know. Each is individually owned and as such is decorated and furnished to the owner’s personal taste but all are equipped to the same standard.

Fondly known as the playground of the rich and famous, you might be surprised to learn that Marbella isn’t just a popular holiday resort visited by thousands every year. It actually stretches almost 30k along the coast and includes many residential communities and small resorts as well as larger well known places such as Puerto Banús and Nikki Beach. The real Marbella, the part you really need to experience, is its fabulous old town where narrow cobbled streets are lined with beautiful historical buildings and lovely little boutiques that intersperse with pretty shaded squares. Revel in the many delightful cafes and bars that provide the ideal resting spot for that morning coffee or evening drink and tapas. It’s a marked but welcoming contrast to the modern touristic side of the resort that is more familiar to most.

The fabulous Ona Alanda Club is just south of the A7 (no noise) across the bridge from Elviria, an upmarket residential suburb 10k from Marbella where you will find a commercial centre with supermarkets, bars and restaurants. Sitio de Calahonda is a large tourist development between Marbella and Fuengirola popular with the British and other visitors who holiday here or own timeshare properties. Stretching from the coast into the hills behind the A7, it’s an excellent base for exploring the Costa del Sol as it is pretty central.

A 2 minute drive to the west is the picturesque port of Puerto Cabopino where you’ll find some of the coast’s most popular restaurants whilst driving east brings you to Miraflores, a golf and bowls resort beyond which is the beautiful whitewashed village of Mijas Pueblo, one of the jewels of the Costa del Sol. There are also at least 10 golf courses within a 10k radius.

The Aparthotel Ona Campanario in Calahonda is halfway between Marbella and Fuengirola so it’s a great base for a long stay holiday on the Costa del Sol. This attractive, well maintained complex has around 100 apartments in several 3 storey whitewashed buildings (no lift) linked by tiled walkways and centred around a lovely outdoor pool and garden. Although the pool is not open during the winter, guests are welcome to use the area for relaxing and sun bathing. Please note that all accommodation, some of which is residential, is reached by steps including those on the ground floor.

There is a very good restaurant/bar alongside reception which is under separate ownership and open all year except January, or it’s a 10 minute downhill walk to a well stocked mini market (400m) and an assortment of bars and restaurants. The beach is about 1.5k and is backed by a lovely boardwalk which runs all the way from Manilva in the west to Nerja in the east and is a delightful place for a stroll at any time of day.

Sagres, the most south-westerly point in the Algarve and Europe, is relatively untouched by tourism and with spectacular, untamed scenery, is about the great outdoors. Visitors here have a wide range of nature-based activities to choose from and if you like walking, cycling, bird watching or fishing this really is the place for you.

There are several lovely beaches protected by high cliffs to explore and many footpaths to follow with stunning views - those from the lighthouse are quite breath-taking. This is also a popular place with surfers who come to ride the fabulous western Atlantic waves. With a comfortable year round temperature and some fantastic good value family restaurants to choose from - the fish and seafood are to die for - this is a great location to spend a relaxing and healthy winter.

The pretty and busy town of Lagos is only about a twenty minute drive and has an attractive old quarter, marina, good shopping, bars and restaurants. It is a year round resort and a good place to visit if you miss crowds.

Close to the centre of this sleepy, traditional village the excellent service offered at the Sagres Time Apartments starts the minute you arrive and continues right up until the moment you leave. The staff will go out of their way to ensure your stay is everything it should be - they aim to provide almost anything clients request and have even been known to take them out to dinner.

Centered round the heated seawater outdoor pool there are 40 apartments in a U-shaped 2 storey building, all similar in style and furnishings and very light and spacious. The two bedroom apartments are all ground floor whilst the one bedroom apartments are on the upper level only (approx 18 steps). Rocha Brava Village Resort Carvoeiro, Algarve

The pretty little white-washed town of Carvoeiro is centered around a small but lovely sheltered beach protected by cliffs on either side. Once a traditional tuna fishing village, it has lost none of its character and charm whilst becoming a very sought after location for those who wish to avoid its more brash and noisy counterparts.

Surrounded by breathtaking landscape where the clifftops offer plenty of great walking opportunities and stunning views, the coastline is littered with amazing little grottoes and ‘algares’ - holes created where the sea has eroded the rock over time. Lagoa, home to one of Portugal’s oldest wineries and Wine City of Portugal 2016, is roughly 7k inland from the coast and the beautiful beaches the area is renowned for. It’s an unassuming little town that sits on a small hill and is actually a lot bigger than it looks. Its cobblestone streets are full of attractive white washed houses, boutiques and roadside cafes and there are lots of little squares and garden areas with seating where you can sit and ponder a while.

It’s a short drive to nearby Carvoeiro where the clifftops offer great walking opportunities complete with stunning views of the breathtaking landscape. Or, the Algarve’s most attractive town, Silves, with its Moorish castle and great shopping opportunities, is 15 minutes to the north. Portimão is also just a short drive and, for golfers, there are, of course, several championship courses in the area.

Quinta do Rosal is in the countryside in the Vale d’El Rei - the Valley of the Kings - in the Lagoa area of the beautiful Algarve. It’s a quiet and tasteful resort 5k from Carvoeiro and within easy driving distance of some of the region’s most attractive towns and beautiful beaches.

This attractive development of town houses and villas is set in lawned grounds with an unheated outdoor pool. The 25 town houses, which Brittany Ferries are offering, are different in layout and style but all are furnished and equipped to a high standard. Vilar do Golf is a stunning resort of 181 apartments in two storey terraced houses alongside a fabulous golf course. Alto da Colina is a modern 5 storey aparthotel with lifts, 5k from Albufeira old centre and 1.5k from the shops, bars and restaurants of Areas de São João. Along with the Alfagar Village (see XP8005) and the Alfagar II Aparthotel it forms part of the larger Alfagar complex.

Alto da Colina has a wide range of facilities which include an indoor pool as well as a large, free-form outdoor pool, a restaurant and bar plus a small gym. For an extra charge there is also a sauna, Turkish bath and tennis courts. Guests can also use the facilities of the village and the second aparthotel which include three more pools, restaurants, a well-stocked mini mart and a lovely English style bar with entertainment a couple of nights a week.

There is also direct access down to the beach from Alfagar Village via lots of steps, and at low tide there is a nice walk to the fishermen’s village of Olhos de Agua to the east or, heading west on a rocky path, Albufeira. The 189 apartments are modern in style and colour co-ordinated by floor - red, blue, green and yellow. They are all similarly furnished and equipped, and have heating/air conditioning and a spacious balcony with garden furniture and either a partial or full sea view. The kitchens are perhaps not ideal for keen cooks as there is no oven but there is adequate equipment to make a meal and local restaurants offering cheap ‘menus del dia’ abound.

In a cliff-top location with beautiful gardens and stunning views out over the Atlantic, Alfagar Village is just a short drive from Albufeira old centre (5k) and 1.5k from the shops, bars and restaurants of Areas São João. Unlike many other destinations in the Algarve, Lagos has managed to cleverly retain its charm and culture whilst developing its holiday appeal for visitors and, as such, has become one of Portugal’s top tourist locations.

It’s a mixture of old and new with a modern marina, paved promenades and a pretty old town with cobbled streets and picturesque squares enclosed by 16th century walls. It also has excellent beaches, a fabulous diversity of restaurants and bars and, with every activity you can imagine on offer, it’s not hard to see Lagos’ allure and understand why it’s visited year round.

The Marina Club resort is, as its name suggests, right alongside the stunning Marina de Lagos home to expensive yachts and motor cruisers where you can relax with a drink and watch the world go by. There is a supermarket 100m away amongst small shops, bars and restaurants, and a short walk over the bridge takes you to the historic centre of Lagos with its many attractions and eateries serving tasty and good value ‘menus del dia’.

The eastern end of the Algarve is very different to the rest of the region as it’s a lot flatter and beaches are backed by sand dunes instead of cliffs. The sea is also a little warmer here too.

Less than 15k from the Spanish border, the small village of Manta Rota (1.5k) is a favourite of the Portuguese who come to enjoy the beautiful beach in summer but it is slowly starting to become a popular long stay winter destination for foreign visitors too. It’s a fabulous location, very peaceful with attractive surroundings and is a great place to experience a typical Portuguese holiday as it has none of the commercial trappings found in most resorts.

Although a car is needed, for those who enjoy walking the coastline is long and easy to navigate - Praia Verde, Monte Gordo and Praia Cacela Velha are all within walking distance.

13k from Manta Rota, Tavira is, without doubt, one of the Algarve’s most beautiful towns. Oozing charm and attracting thousands of visitors year round, its traditional architecture has striking Moorish influences and there are very few big commerical buildings and hotels. There are also no less than 22 churches! Rambling cobbled streets lead past pretty plazas up to the castle and its lovely garden whilst the river runs down below backed by lovely little shops and boutiques as well as many highly rated restaurants.

Other neighbouring places worth a visit include Monte Gordo, a small fishing village that is now a modern resort town complete with stunning beach and promenade backed by palm trees; delightful Cacela Velha with its typical whitewashed houses and a fort on the waterfront; and Castro Marim where there are great panoramic views from its castle remains.

You can also take a walk through the Reserva Natural do Sapal - the salt marsh nature reserve, a large area of land between Castro Marim, Monte Gordo and Vila Real de Santo António which is home to vast numbers of different birds, including storks, sandpipers and flamingos as well as over 400 different plants and animals.

The Praia de Lota Resort apartments and hotel have direct access to one of eastern Portugal’s most beautiful beaches on the edge of the Ria Formosa Natural Park, an important wetland for migrating birds. It’s a popular holiday destination for the Dutch and the area is great for cycling.

The 52 apartments are on 3 floors in an L-shaped building (no lift) within well maintained grounds a short walk from the hotel. They have their own unheated outdoor pool and sun terrace and guests may also use the hotel facilities which include a tennis court (lessons available), another outdoor pool, pilates, yoga (charges apply) and cycle hire.

There is also a pleasant bar and a restaurant which has an excellent winter dinner offer. Additionally there is free Wi-Fi in public areas, a small coin operated laundry room plus plenty of parking just outside.

Less than 25k from the Spanish border, Tavira is, without doubt, one of the Algarve’s most beautiful towns. Originally a fishing village, Cabanas, 7k east of Tavira is a picturesque whitewashed village with a beautiful promenade, traditional restaurants and a long empty island beach reached by ferry or water taxi.

Fuseta (2k) is another lovely place to visit and lies on the Algarve Ecoway, the coastal foot and cycle path along which you can now walk east to Arroteia, Pinheiro and beyond, or west to Bias and onto Olhão. This old fishing town has a charming waterfront, a Thursday street market and a good flea market on the 2nd Sunday of every month. As well as a small lagoon beach in town - Praia dos Tesos - there is a long and lovely beach on the island opposite (Ilha de Armona) which can be reached by ferry or water taxi.

O Monte dos Avós is a small and charming, privately owned complex in Arroteia, a residential community slightly off the beaten track, approximately 10k west of Tavira. If you’re looking for a peaceful and relaxing location to get away from it all then this will pretty much fit the bill. A car is definitely needed when staying here as the nearest provisions are in Livramento (1k) although for a supermarket and all other amenities then a trip to Tavira is required.

There are just 11 whitewashed houses and bungalows and a small block of 6 apartments together with an outdoor pool, gardens and parking within the attractive gated grounds. Brittany Ferries’ clients have a choice of 2 storey townhouses with 2 bedrooms or one bedroom apartments. All are simply furnished in the same style and do not have heating (2 portable heaters provided) or any laundry facilities but represent great value for money as they are in an ideal location for visiting the beautiful eastern Algarve. The friendly caretaker and her handyman husband live on site and although they do not speak English, they are on hand and eager to help should you need anything.

Cleaning every 3 days, linen is changed weekly and towels twice a week. Free Wi-Fi around reception and the pool but not in
