CHAPTER FL2-N
DECEMBER 2016
The Chapter Directors We lost a very dear friend in November. Ruth Irene Polley was a well known and loved member of our Chapter. Ruth’s presence at our events always brought a smile to everyone’s face. When Ruth and Nolan heard we were going to Germany and that we were going to rent a Goldwing for two weeks the two of them started sharing with us some of their family stories of places that they had visited while in Europe It was great hearing about their adventures.
When we came back Nolan and Ruth asked how our trip was. It was great to share our adventures with them. We are truly blessed to have known Ruth for she was a very special lady and will be greatly missed by all her friends in GWRRA. Every time we saw Ruth she would always have a smile on her face and most of the time she would win door prizes and the 50/50 drawings when she attended our chapter meetings. Nolan and Ruth were always chipping in and helping the Florida chapters with their rallies no matter which chapter it was. They not only belong to our chapter they belong to several chapters and were always participating. This is the Thanksgiving time of year and we have lots to be thankful for whether we believe it or not. For instance we were all blessed to have known Ruth and we are very thankful that we had time to spend with her. So we hope that you can take the time to remember and to be thankful. Our days get so cluttered with work, retirement, and many other activities that divide our time, and I know that I lose track and forget to take the time to be thankful. We hope that you have had a wonderful Thanksgiving with your loved ones. As quickly as Thanksgiving arrived, it will be gone and we will all be rushing into the Christmas season. Our first event in December will be the Toy Run. Meet at Carnival Mall, KSU 07:30am. We will ride in as a group and hopefully be able to stay together. Bring Coffee or you favorite beverage, we will be supplying donuts. The next major event will be the Christmas Party, which has changed from the 3
rd to Friday the 9
th. The location of Dixie Crossroads has not changed. If you have not done so already, please RSVP to Mo via the contact information on the cover of this newsletter. The dress is Fancy/Casual. There will be a "Dirty Santa" Christmas Gift Exchange. Participation is not required, but if you do participate, please bring one gift per person participating (no participating as a couple). The limit for the gift exchange is $10.00. Gifts must be bagged or wrapped (so there is no peaking). Rules for participating will be set at the beginning of the exchange. If you are not familiar with where Dixie Crossroads is, the map is included on the event calendar on the chapter web site. We will have our regularly scheduled Chapter meeting at Jimmy’s on Wednesday the 28th. We hope to see you all there and hear about your Christmas stories. Autumn is a great time to ride, although the days can be much shorter. Temperatures during the day can comfortable shirt-sleeve weather, but temperatures at night can drop rapidly. And, the weather can change dramatically during the course of a single ride. As the Scouts say, “Be prepared!” Before you leave for the ride, make sure that you and your co-rider have the proper gear. Bring a jacket (or sweatshirt or coat or electric vest) for that drop of the temperature. It’s a lot easier than finding a place to stop for coffee every half hour. Pack the rain gear. Even here in Florida, it may be bright, with plenty of sunshine, when you leave and pouring cats ‘n dogs when you get home. There are several brands of rain gear available, from inexpensive to very expensive. The style and make depends upon how much you ride in the weather, how dry you want to stay. And how much you (or your co-rider) wish to spend. A real cheap, but very serviceable, option is a simple rain suite from Walmart. Trash bags might work in a pinch, but they are a real drag. MEC Report
As we scheduled no meeting this month so all could be with their families for Thanksgiving, Pat & I hope your turkey day will be a good one. A great time to relax and enjoy good food and family. On the 17th I drove over to Largo, Florida to take a Step Class with the Clearwater Chapter, FL1-M which was given by the Motorcycle Foundation instructor. The class was for advanced side car/ trikes, add ons, voyager kits and Spyder Can Ams. There were four Goldwing trikes, one 1800 with side car and my Spyder. The class was very informative. We were put through our paces from stopping in a curve, to swerving to miss the back of a truck or car to the left or right. I almost like I was riding a horse when swerving. You actually had to slide your body into the curve side to counteract the centrifugal force generated by swerving to miss that stopped object. There were several other maneuvers we practiced. Quick stops, weaves, basic turns, the sliding the rear end around a corner or drifting. All in all, it was a very good class and counts for your levels in GWRRA. With me being new to a Spyder Can Am rider, it made me much more confident about riding it. The educational classes are one of the main assets to belonging to GWRRA. Thanks to FL1-M Clearwater Chapter and Tracy and Sharon Dunn, Chapter Educators, Curtis Palmore, Chapter Director and instructor. On another note, Pat and I are looking forward to the Chapter Christmas Party on December 9th. We hope to see you all there. Paul & Pat Lytle FL2-N Membership Enhancement Coordinators
