SEE BEYOND OUTWARD APPEARANCES
The phrase “Sunday best” has lost much of its meaning in our society today. Some lament the loss of people dressing up for church on Sunday; others think it’s a healthy sign that we’re as casual in attire gathered before the Lord as we are elsewhere. No matter which school of thought on this topic we belong to, James would probably chastise us. In either case, we are still focused on external appearance, mistaking it for some sort of favored position before God. True, James criticizes the community that favors the rich and well-dressed while ostracizing the poorly clothed, but even more he criticizes the making of distinctions, making choices based on criteria that having nothing to do with the reign of God. James might turn our attention to the reign of God described by Isaiah, in which people are healed and the earth becomes ripe to bear fruit. Jesus today is focused on this reign of God, healing a Gentile man in a region hostile to his Jewish faith, not mindful of the man’s origins or clothing or status or ability to repay. Isaiah, James, and Jesus in Mark’s Gospel all call us to look more deeply to find where the will of God needs to be done, and has been done, on earth as in heaven.

St. Benedict News…. Saint Benedict Catholic School is blessed to have Mr. Greg Tucker bring his energy and expertise to the new STEM focus. Mr. Tucker has a Mathematics/Computer Science degree from the University of Alabama in Huntsville and spent the major-ity of his career working as a software engineer concentrating in communications protocol testing. He was the co-founder of Hard Engineering then retired from the engineering world in 2000 at which time he started teaching Mathematics and Economics at John Paul II Catholic High School in Huntsville. After another retirement, Greg moved to Charlotte, NC and started teaching Mathematics at Charlotte Catholic High School. For five years, Greg developed an engineering curriculum for CCHS and taught the program before retiring in the Gulf Coast area. His program was developed to introduce students to numerous engineering disciplines through multiple hands-on projects utilizing latest technologies. Mr. Tucker will begin enriching the SBCS environ-ment with STEM classes for middle school, introductory lessons in the elementary school, and by improving the effectiveness of on campus technology for students and teachers. Don’t forget to contribute to our Raise the Roof campaign checks may be made payable to SBCS PTO and mailed to 12786 Illinois Street, Elberta, AL 36530 or, to pay by credit card https://squ.re/2LX0vf0.

Service and Outreach Program Outreach
Volunteers needed for St Bartholomew’s new program to serve our
elderly, our ill, our parishioners in need: If you are interested in
being trained and serving in the Service and Outreach Volunteer
Program at St Bartholomew, please contact Carl Klingelberger
(269-2296), Bill Byerley (986-3993), or Betty Wood (986-5101). Each
volunteer will be trained as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy
Communion. This requires that each member must be approved by
Msgr. Martin and Archbishop Rodi. The Archdiocese requires all
Extraordinary Ministers be at least 21years old; be fully initiated in
the Catholic Church (i.e. has received Baptism, Holy Eucharist, and
Confirmation); be a Catholic in good standing living out the Christian
life of faith and morals; be in agreement of the Churches teaching
on marriage and respect for life; display reverence and decorum for
the Eucharist and the Mass. Our hope is to put together our team
of Volunteers by late October and start training in early November.

scope of the program and expectations of the volunteer.

The ACCW has raised funds for education through the Burse Club for 60 years. It is an endowment fund that is invested in the Catholic Foundation, where 5% is distributed annually to help fund the ex-pense of seminarian education. The 5% distribution covers $228,000 of the $1,000,000 expense. The first $12 of each gift will be donated to the endowed Nurse Club fund and you will be remembered in prayer daily. Catholic Charities Appeal funds are NOT used for any seminarian expenses. The Annual Burse Club Membership is $12 and there are no meetings to attend. There are always Burse cards available for Deaths, Birthdays and special occasions in the parish office.
