Objective of GLC 2000

• Creation of a Global Land Cover map documenting conditions for 2000 in a consistent and uniform manner

• Creation of a Global Burnt Area map documenting distribution and extent of burning for 2000

(GBA 2000)• Making all of the above available to users and

to contributors

Page 4: Space Applications Institute Global Vegetation Monitoring Unit Introduction to the GLC 2000 Project GLC 2000 Workshop, Ispra 28-29 March 2001 1 A. Belward

Rationale

• the UN ecosystem-related conventions (FCCC, CCD, CBD) = Starting point

• Possibility to answer specific needs• Agreement on a common L.C. base for the

year 2000 through extended partnerhip• G.M.E.S. demonstrator

Page 5: Space Applications Institute Global Vegetation Monitoring Unit Introduction to the GLC 2000 Project GLC 2000 Workshop, Ispra 28-29 March 2001 1 A. Belward

“historical” reference: IGBP 1km Land Cover product

• Heavy data preparation process• Fixed legend with limited number of classes• Homogeneous classification procedure• Statistically-based validation procedure

Question: based on this experience, how to improve the FINAL PRODUCT to satisfy both global needs and local expectations?

Expanding the User community…

From the UN international conventions, we got further expression of interest for:

• Global scale– Scientific community (e. g. climate modelling)– International programmes (GTOS, IGOS, GOFC, IGBP,…)– Coordination and exchange harmonization & standardization

• Continental scale– Baseline info. for . crop monitoring system

. Computation of meteorological params.– Inventory of land resources (water bodies, irrigated agriculture,

…)– Computing carbon balance

• National scale– Conventions signatories– Help in reporting and environmental planning– Crop and environmental monitoring systems

How to reach such a large potential user base

• Develop broad partnership AND good co-ordination (hopefully…)

• Keep a common platform: hierarchical classification scheme based on FAO-LCCS partners must accept a minimum set of rules to contribute to the effort at the global level

• Allow/encourage the production of specific user-oriented information partners have the possibility to go beyond these rules to satisfy their local needs

• Use a common dataset as reference: daily VEGETATION data data properties are constraining the quality and detail of the final product

• Allow flexibility in classification methods: this is the central topic of this workshop

Time frame

• Kick-off meeting: May 2000• Data acquisition: 2000• “legend” workshop: Nov. 2000• Data availability: March-April 2001• “methods” workshop”: March 2001• “validation” workshop: TBD• Map production: 2001-2002• Validation: end 2002 (end of EC-FP4)

VEGETATION Data availability

• All data acquired and delivered for the period Nov. 1999 – Dec. 2000 (sponsored by partners of the VEGETATION Programme)

• VEGA 2000 projects: delivery in progress• At JRC: all data stored & on-line, few dates to be

corrected• GLC 2000 partners: a first batch of 15 windows

almost completely delivered, a second batch is programmed

• GBA 2000 component: 12 windows completed

VEGA 2000 projects with L. C. component

Nine successful VEGA 2000 teams implementing projects with a land cover component have been contacted.

Some of them participate in this workshop.

Further coordination is expected.

High res. data for validation and aid to interpretation

• Possibilities to access SPOT and TM data are being investigated

• Access not yet finalised• There are several on-going projects involving

high res. Data for yr. 2000• Contributions /suggestions are welcome
