Its abit tough today, for us to imagine finding enough time to seek pleasure in life, when we are all consumed with being at work, stuck in traffic, the floods, and so many other countless problems of todays modern life. But pleasure and luxury are the real necessity in life. I heard this saying once, that we only live once but thats enough if we live it right. I completely agree with this, and to maybe live with the philosophy live everyday without regret and live everyday like its the last would ensure us that our time are well spent. This is the reason why the theme of our magazine this time is Luxury, and not just any kind of luxury, we are talking about taking it all the way to the extreme. The Italians really know how to do luxury (Ferrari, Louis Vuitton, do I really need to name all the brands?) but these days, living the extreme luxurious life is more than just driving a top of the line car or carrying the newest Italian bag, but its also to engulf yourself in Italians finest furniture, which although could be a seemingly new concept to some market, is now the best way to enjoy yourself. Imagining sleeping on a Cinova bed, with foam-latex mattress, enjoying a Busnelli sofa, watching TV from a Visionnaire cabinet. But let me say it again that a luxurious home is not for everyone, its not as flashy as driving a Ferrari, and possibly even more expensive, but let us give you a sneek peek at why this could now be the next big thing.

Till the next edition.Kawin KaentrakoolEditor in Chief

    DESIGNER FROM THE SIDEWALK

Curiosity, passion and effective managerial intuitions propelled Bruno Rainaldi to the top of the heap. One of the most influential creatives, he was such a great loss to the industry of Italian design dying prematurely on 23rd of February this year. He was famous for the Ptolomeo metal bookcase, which won the Compasso dOro in 2004 and even designed for a couple of lights for Slamp. Believe it or not, he was self-taught and called himself a designer from the sidewalk. We guess you just need to learn all

the rules to follow his footsteps.

ART FOR ARTS SAKEWhat happens when you mix Italian local artist Gunza and creative tailors Sarta de qua Sarta de l and Living Divani pieces designed by Piero Lissoni , Piergiorgio Cazzaniga, Nathan Yong and Harry&Camila? Well, the results are surrealist images and poetically interpreted contemporary pieces for the LuminAsta in Como auction event. All for the sake of the Artificio project, which aims to create a space for artistic research and production in Como area.

The light, unconventional grace of Piergiorgio Cazzanigas bloom seat assumes a purple hue, transforming into a nest for magical birds in shades of magenta, orange and lilac, while another

plays on contrasts of black and white.

The curvilinear shape of Harry&Camilas outdoor chaise longue Pi-Air appears in white with black characters, or in red with orange figures.

THE BOW CHAIRThis Fiocco lounge chair from Busnelli was originally designed by Gianni Pareschi in 1970 and was re-edited in 2007. Showing only the contour from the sides, it appears like a ribbon or a bow, which in Italian is Fiocco. Truly a piece of art considering it is part of MoMa collection, it is one great focal point for a contemporary room and a striking contrast for a traditional space.

BUBBLY LIGHTInspired by childhood memory, playing, the thrill of a soap bubble and transformed into iridescent lights by Adriano Rachelle. These collection of lamps exude cascading elegant lights refracted into the room. Try visualizing these turn your space into a one of a kind scene a unique sight.

Brand: PARROTModel: ZikmuPrice: 1,600$What about it: Sexy design (by Philip Starck), comes in a pair, many color choice to choose from, great for filling the whole room (or multiple rooms) with sound, plays from iphone/ipod dock or though bluetooth. What not about it: Not very mobile, requires power to work, low quality remote, expensive.Verdict: A conversation piece, convenient if you dont want to move it around too much. Can really fill up a large space with decent quality sound, plays easily through bluetooth or from computer, falls short in the bass and treble department, remote tends to not always work, very very expensive.

    Brand: MonsterModel: Beatbox

Price: 450$What about it: Small speaker good enough for one room, has good quality of sound (same as B&W) for its 2 speakers, interesting design, matte finish, can dock the ipod, good midrange but not as well on the treble and bass side, no air connectivity, performs on par with the 300$ ipod speakers but not as well as

    the 600$ range

  • TECHNOLOGY TODAY

The war between Facebook and Google+ continues, and although Google+ seems to be doing better

in so many ways, the majority would still decide to not move.

  • 40SPACE2011 Issue 2 Sept 2011

Its almost like those days, when we witnessed the rivalry between Myspace and Facebook. Whats the difference now? Google Plus is doing something very different, and is actually making points that are convincing a lot of users out there who are actually concern about something very important: Privacy and Identity. But is that enough to move? Which service is actually better?

Google+s concept is very good: requiring users to group their contacts immediately upon connecting with them and putting them into circles, of which are easily categorized (friends, family, public, co-workers, you name it) then when you want to share, just decide which group of circles are appropriate for your post, and its pretty much that easy. I find this extremely convenient: as a member of Facebook since 2004, Ive accumulated contacts of something close to 2000, of which is a number Ive learnt to care very little about grouping. You can imagine that grouping will generally depend on their immediate relationship to you, and this can sometimes be hard to define, but Google+ forces you to do this since the beginning, which means that somehow, at the end of the day, your contacts will be grouped. Why do I find this to be awesome? I can write about my nights out to groups of close friends, without having to worry what my colleague will think of me.

    PRIVACY

    1 0

    1 1

The biggest letdown of Google+ is probably the fact that very little people are on it. Not little considering how many users are actually on it, but little in a sense that only 5% of my contacts from Facebook have decided to give Google+ a try. During the initial stage, there were alot of people who gave it a shot (more likely since there was a hype and buzz all over Facebook) but since then, the number have slowed down, so much that I have yet to find more than 5 known friends on there per week, which considering how many friends I have on Facebook, is quite ridiculous. It becomes a point also, that when sharing on Facebook, that you want your friends to comment about your post and so forth. This is more likely to happen with a larger audience of 2000, compared to an audience of 100. For this particular reason, people are still unable to feel the need to waste their life away on this social networking space, and to change their behavior of social networking - whether or not the function of Google+ is better, there needs to be something more

radical to drag all these people over.

    FRIENDS

Both platform now allows for users to play games on their site, but both offering this service with pros and cons. Facebook have many more games to choose from, and many of your friends would be playing on them in comparison to Google+ - however, the navigation is complicated and people usually loose track of playing them when the game itself is lost in everything else. Google+ on the other hand, offers a very simple menu to find games to play, but not many games are offered at the moment, and not many people are playing them. This of course, could improve over time when more people change their

mind. At this point, I see it as a tie.

    GAMES

    2 2

  • TECHNOLOGY TODAY

    Issue 2 Sept 201141

    SPACE2011

The visual platform of the two are very different, the design are done so in a way to accommodate the number of products that are available for both of the websites. Facebook has a bigger challenge - as they are the king of social networking for many years now, and being the first choice target of all markets to put their product on. The team were forced to cram many products and features into Facebook, and as a result the design are considerably messy, especially at times. For Google+, since for now there are no ads, and the focus of the site is on the stream (essentially newsfeed), the interface is clean. Also, the site is designed so that people wouldnt use their fake names (although this is arguable from the current problem that Google have with internet bloggers who are well known through their internet names) and the profile page give people a more layered information, which could well prevent people from spending too much time stalking each other online. For now, Google+ wins. But once everybody wants a jump in, well see how

    they react.

    VISUAL

    3 2

The changes to social networking now compared to say, 6 years ago, is that everyone can do them on the fly now. This meant that it is absolutely necessary that for social networking to be considered good, it needs to be mobile, fast, and provide users with ways to share as many aspect of their lives as possible on the go. Facebook mobile app have been available for a while now and have been the stable of many on their mobile phones, which in my opinion works quite well, and very little to complain about. However, crashes are still prominent, and the in-app browser can be very slow and unresponsive. Google+ native app on the iPhone addresses these issues, they work more or less the same way, introduced Huddle (group messaging), and have a much better in-app browser. However, with limited functions and people on it theres less incentive to use although uploading pictures and sharing information is much more pleasant. Google+

    wins here.

    SOCIAL NETWORKING ON THE GO

    4 2

Comparing these two services at this point, is probably like trying to compare potatoes to tomatoes. There are indeed some good points and bad points (of which we all endure whether we like them or not) since sharing things with our friends have become the ultimate time waster of our lives. And for this reason, we can all agree that at the end of the day, despite whatever functionality each one of them can provide, we still care the most that we can share things with our life, to as many people as possible. Facebook although now considered lacking in some functions, will still remain king of social networking for the time to come, and unless Google+ one day finds itself fluttered with all the same people who enjoyed the Facebook counterpart, things wont change by a large margin. The move is a communal effort, a large one, and people are uncomfortable to change an already very stable part of their social life with Facebook, would ultimately be the reason why at the end of the day and many days to come, people

would still not move from Facebook to try out its new competitor.

If you are planning a trip in the Italian mainland (also called boot because of its particular shape) these hotels despite the high price will offer you not an accomodation but a total experience, showing that they worth any euro you paid for. It has been extremely difficult to choose only few of them, neglecting the splendour of many others, but this article has been written following a geographical criterion, in order to give the readers valid options aside from wherever they will decide to go.

RELAIS SANTA CROCE, FIRENZE Nothing better than this description to understand the luxury of this hotel in the capital of Tuscany:A perfect balance between the luxury of a bygone era and modern comforts. In the historic centre of Florence, an eighteenth century residence hosts the exclusive, refined Relais Santa Croce hotel. It is the ideal destination for those seeking the intimacy of a private residence in Florence. The hotel restaurant, Guelfi e Ghibellini, offers innovative, seasonal regional menus. Furthermore, situated within the same building as the Relais Santa Croce is the Enoteca Pinchiorri, a three-star Michelin restaurant.http://www.relaisantacroce.com/
