2014 Objectives

Build on the 2013 Global Education Committee (& SRI report 2012)

Submit guidelines (Code of Conduct) to launch a global Mentorship initiative

Suggest a list of elligible international Spa Directors/Managers or GMs (5 years +)

for the 1st promotion of Mentors

Test the concept with a pilot program in 2015

What is Mentorship?

Enables a PEER TO PEER, personal and confidential dialogue between

Spa Managers & seasoned Spa Directors

Mentees can grow skills and strategies to deal with stress, time-management,

priority-sorting and decision-making

Mentors serve as stable, experienced and trusted advisors who make

Spa Managers’ professional journey easier through active listening, questioning,

and serving as a “sounding board”.

What Mentorship is Not

A Mentor does not do the homework, consult for, or make decisions for a Mentee,

but rather suggests, guides & inspires.

As opposed to a leader who must stand ahead and call others forth,

a Mentor “stands beside and calls forth from within” (Ralph Cioffi)

Instead of answering all the operational questions that a Mentee would have

(HR, Finance, Marketing, Administrative…), Mentors would rather help the Mentee

assess the different options at hand and question by himself/herself the best

possible solution given the circumstances & environment.

Mentors should not be considered as « free » consultants.

Mentorship Pilot Program

Trial period to test the concept:

•GSWS can support & promote, but not host & administrate •Evalutate the time needed for administrative supervision

•Learn to walk, before we run & take-off

Mission Statement Our mission is to produce a positive and inclusive

public relations/marketing campaign including a website and video(s) to promote spa careers and education in order to ultimately encourage people to join the spa and wellness industries.

Spa Management Market Gap There are currently 130,000 - 180,000 spa managers and

directors worldwide. However, there are only 4,000 students are currently enrolled in spa management-related degree programs worldwide.

- SRI International, GSWS 2012 Report

Spa Employee Market Gap ISPA SnapShot Survey, August 2014

2014 ISPA Annual State of the Industry Survey

There are 35,100 full and part-time unstaffed service provider positions* in spas in the United States**

* Includes massage therapists, estheticians and nail technicians. Does not include spa management.

**Confidential stat with approval to share only during this presentation. This figure is subject to final revision, and will be officially released in the full report from the International Spa Association (ISPA 2014).
