In 2017, biotech soybeans accounted for 50% of all the biotech crop area in the world. The global area of herbicide tolerant and stacked trait insect resistant and herbicide tolerant (IR/HT) soybeans in 2017 was 94.1 million hectares, an increase of 4% over the 2016 area, equivalent to 979,000 hectares. The 94.1 million hectares biotech soybeans in 2017 comprised 69.7 million hectares HT, and 24.4 million hectares stacked IR/HT (Intacta™) soybean. Biotech soybeans were planted in 9 countries in 2017. In decreasing area, these countries were United States of America (34 million hectares), Brazil (33.7 million hectares), Argentina (18.1 million hectares), Paraguay (2.7 million hectares), Canada (2.5 million hectares), Bolivia (1.2 million hectares), Uruguay (1.1 million hectares), South Africa (243,000 hectares), and Chile (1,000 hectares).
