Great Eastern Hailway, and with the cooperation of that railway, but recently decided to dispose of it to one of the preservation societies. The Car, No.13ll, is a fifty-six foot wooden, arch-roof interurban car, built by the British Columb ia Electric Hailway in 1913. It weighs some forty-two tons, and outweighs any other el ectr ic railway equipment pre­served by the Association. This car ran on the i nterurban lines out of Vancouver, serving New \Jestminster and the Fraser Valley. Only one other BCER interurban is preserved in CanaJ.a , No .1223 , which was kept by the Mu.nicipality of Burnaby, ne ar Centra l Park between Va ncouver and New Westminster. At least two BCER car s are preserved in the United States. Incidentally, a Fund has been set up similar to that established for the Ot tawa cars. Mr . vl illiam McKeown is thE) Chairman of the Fund, which is designed to reimburse the Associat ion for its outlay in connection with the purchase of the car. The Editorial Committ ee records with sorrow, the accidental death , on August 12th, 1959, of Edward Allan Toohey , age 29 years , in a traffic accident at Cape Town , Union of 30uth Africa, where he had been living for the past few years. Allan was a meli1ber of our Association until his departure for England in August 1954, and he was Edi to r of the' News Report from its inception in September 1949, until December 1951.

No. 351 7 was the last street­ca r to oper ate in the city streets of Montreal, t ;ms end i ng the sixty­seven year history of e l ectric trolleys in the metropolis of Canada, and ninety-eight years of street railways in Montreal.

No . 3517, a PCC car, was the l a s t in a parade of histori cal trans­portation vehicles, wh i ch the Commi ssion assembl ed as a fitting COEl.mem­oration to mark the complete changeover to bus oper at ion. Fifteen his­toric vehicles , three busses , t wo inspe ctors ? radio cars and a trouble . truck made up the proce~3 s:ion , which l eft Mount Hoyal carbarn at 2: 30 PM on Sunday , August 30th, 1959. The procession proceeded west on Mount Hoyal, south on Papineau to Craig , around the l oop , north on Papineau and ea s t on 11.osemont Blvd ., t o the loop at 26th Avenue, then ba ck along t he Boul evard to Pa~;_n8au, s outh on that s treet to Mount Hoyal, and back to the carhouse . The r eturn was made about 4:45 PM.

Just ahead of No . 3517 wa s car No o 350 , II Rocket"il , which , just 24,449 days before, on Sept ember 21st, 1892, made trans it h i story in Montreal by being the first el E; ct ric car ever to operate in the city. The 1iRocket 11

Smi th of Rapide Bl an c , (lue ., ",rho, in 1892 , a t the age of 17, was a member of the Royal 21ectric Company !s t echnical crew which accompanied the fl Rocket ll on i ts epocha l. first run a round the MSR!s Belt Line. The occasion remains very clear in Mr . Smith's memory.

Two of the vehicl es in the parade we r e from the Association's coll­ection -- one be ing No . 274 , a singl e truck passenger car built in 1892, Vvhich was the f irst full - scal e r ol l ing stock acqui s ition ever made by the Association, ba ck i n J·uly , 19 50 , No . 274 is the onl y Montreal transit vehicle in existence w~lich ha s never belonged to the Tr ansportat ion Com­miSSion ; at the time of its donation to the CRHA i n 1950, Montreal's transit was still in the hands of the Montreal Tramways Company . The other CItHA car was I\Io . S, our popul ar Single- truck open-bench summer elec­tr i. c car, which carr i ed the member:~3 of the Exe cutive and the Railway Di.vision of the Associat ion . No . 8 was obtained in 19 57 and formerly r an in Ontario, though it s participat i on in the parade was as a repr esent·. ;;ltive of several hundred Montreal open cars, none of which, unfortunat el y. have been pres erved ~ This car ".[as rebuilt completiBly by CRHA in 1958 and since rebuil ding has never quite been devoid of temperament. UH ILE THE STEAH LOCOMOTIVE on main line railways in British Columbia is novi , . decidedly, a thing of the past, a sur-prising number of interesting engines

still e~ist and are i n use on Vancouver I s land at the many lumbe~ mills and logging operat ions which have survived, \-·rith rail facilities, as your ~ditor found out on his recent trip t o the Pc cific Coast. The last t en years have seen a r adi cal de cima tion in railway logging oper­a.tions, in favour of truck log[; ing , but t ~lO bona- f ide logging raihrays still exist , and there a~e several mill-switching railways employing geared steam locomotives.

. Inacc e:3 sibility and l ack of tim8 prevented a visit to the l argest Vancouver Island logging railvlay , that of Canadian Forest Products a t Engl ewood, at the north end of the Island. This is a system which pos­sesses quite a nmnbor of steam locomotives , i ncluding gear ed engines , and CanadaYs only articulated , a 2-6-6-2 tonder engine which came, second-hand , from the United States . Incidentally, the only other art iculated ong,ines ever to operate in Canada vv'ere Canadian Pacific f s six 0- 6-6-0 engines of the 1950/5750 class , wh ich wer e r ebuilt about forty years ago into 2-10-0 types . The Canadian Forest Pro ducts rail­-w e,ynalso use ,s an u.nknovm number of geared d i esel locomotives , being d i es el ~ngin~s mounted on th e frames of formor geared steam 10comotivGs .

COl· TOX LOGGING & HAIUvAY COMPANY

This is the only other proper logging railway operation, besides tha t at Englewood , and i s the only one r eadil y accessible to the visit­or . Tho railway (:xtends from Ladysmith , about fourteen mil es south of Nanaimo , on tho oast coast , and after crossing the Esquimalt & Nanaimo Rcdlway about ono mile west of Ladysmith, parallels it for a couple of mi l es , then turns inland up the Nana imo River to the Nanaimo Lakes camp , some twenty-o dd miles_ inland . Two or throe trains make round trips each weekday. Previous observations indicate that these trains include up to about two dozen l og€.; i ng rack cars , which are brought down to the' bay at La.dysmith, then unlJadod into the water and towed away in rafts.

From Ladysmith to tho crossing of tho Nanaimo River, the CL&RCo. uses the f ormer roadbed of the Hollington Colliery Company's railway to Ext ens i on colliery , behind Nanaimo . The present CL&RCo. l ine was put in sometime just previous to, or shortly aftor the beginning of, \Jo rld Vial' II.

On a previous visit in 1953, No.16 was observed as a 2-a-2T with tender, but since t hat time the saddle t enk has been cut dO'V'ffi to t VV(' small portions, one on each side of tho boiler, whi ch a r e we i ghted as ba llast for adhes ion.
