The roots of the MiG-29 can be traced back to the end of the sixties and beginning of the seventies. At that time, information had leaked out that the United States was working on the F-X program, from which emerged the F-15 Eagle. The Soviet Union, obviously, could not be left behind in the arms race, and the General Staff formulated requirements for the Perspektivniy frontovoy istrebitel (PFI - Advanced Frontal Fighter Aircraft). It was to have the ability to take off from small, unprepared fields, have a useful combat radius, excellent turn around time and be able to carry a varied payload. The speed of the machine was to be in excess of Mach 2. Aerodynamic study was passed to TsAGI in co-operation with OKB Sukhoi. It became clear that the best route to take would include two roads. As a result, the PFI program was expanded to also include the PLFI (Advanced Light Frontal Fighter Aircraft), which was to result in the Soviet answer to the F-16 Fighting Falcon lightweight fighter. The plans assumed that the Soviet air force would be composed of one-third PFI aircraft, and two-thirds PLFI, and as such would find its adversary to be mainly the F-16 and the YF-17 (which evolved into the F/A-18). The PFI program with Sukhoi led to the Su-27. The PLFI was entrusted to the Mikoyan bureau. Work on the latter type, under the factory designation ‘Izdelye’ 9 began in 1974, and three years later, on October 6, 1977, the aircraft first took to the air. The program suffered setbacks thanks to the loss of two prototypes, due to problems traced back to the engines. In 1984, air force tests were concluded, and thanks to positive results, the first production machines began to reach Soviet frontal fighter units. These new aircraft began to replace the MiG-23. In keeping with the requirements, the aircraft could lift off from unprepared strips. Auxiliary air intakes on top of the blended fuselage/wing structure provided air on the ground, allowing the regular intakes to close and prevent FOD. The existence of the new fighter was discovered by NATO very early after the program began, and the ASCC allocated the name Fulcrum ‘A’. Besides the base version of the MiG-29 (Izdelyie 9-12), there was also the MiG-29B, an export version intended for countries outside of the Warsaw Pact. Training was carried out on a two-seat version, the MiG-29UB (Izdelyie 9-51), which carried the NATO codename Fulcrum ‘B’. Further development and production was impacted by the fall of the communist block, and the inevitable economic collapse of the Soviet Union and its consequent splitting up of state assets with varying degrees of dependence on Russia. Production also came for the MiG-29K and MiG-29SMT (both coded Fulcrum ‘D’). The MiG-29K is a navalized variant and besides with the country of origin, it also flies with the Indian Navy. The intended role is that of carrier fighter for the ‘Vikramaditya’ (formerly the Soviet carrier ‘Admiral Gorshkov’). The SMT is a modernized variant of the MiG-29. K programu PFI tak pøibyl ještì program PLFI (pokroèilý lehký frontový stíhací letoun), který mìl sovìtskému letectvu dát ekvivalent lehkého stíhacího stroje F-16 Fighting Falcon. Plány pøedpokládaly, že sovìtské letectvo by se mìlo skládat z jedné tøetiny z letounù PFI a ze dvou tøetiny ze strojù PLFI a mít tak protivníky letounù F-16 a YF-17 (pozdìji F/A-18). Programu PFI se s definitivní platností ujal Suchoj a výsledkem se stal typ Su-27. Program PLFI dostala na starost konstrukèní kanceláø Mikojan. Práce na letounu pod továrním oznaèením Izdìlje 9 zaèaly v roce 1974 a o tøi roky pozdìji, 6. øíjna 1977, se letoun dostal poprvé do vzduchu. Program se dostal do skluzu díky haváriím dvou prototypù, pøíèinou byly problémy s motory. V roce 1984 byly dokonèeny testy provádìné letectvem a na základì jejich kladného závìru zaèaly v témže roce dodávky sériových letounù k prvním jednotkám sovìtského frontového letectva. Zde nové stroje zaèaly nahrazovat MiGy-23. V souladu se zadáním mohly operovat také z nezpevnìných ploch. Nasátí neèistot do motorù zabraòovaly alternativní vstupy vzduchu na horní ploše køídla, tzv. žábry. Existenci nového stíhacího letounu rozvìdka NATO zjistila velmi brzy po jeho vzniku. Kódové oznaèení znìlo „Fulcrum A“. Kromì základní verze MiG-29 (Izdìlje 9-12) vznikla také hùøe vybavená verze MiG-29B, která byla exportována do zemí, které nebyly èleny Varšavské smlouvy. Pro výcvik slouží dvoumístná varianta MiG-29UB (Izdìlje 9-51), kterou NATO nazývala „Fulcrum B“. Další vývoj a výrobu letounu poznamenal rozpad komunistického bloku a s ním spojený ekonomický kolaps Sovìtského svazu a jeho následné štìpení na státní útvary s rùznou úrovní nezávislosti na Rusku. Výroby se doèkaly ještì verze MiG-29K a MiG-29SMT (obì znaèené „Fulcrum D“). Verze SMT pøedstavuje modernizovanou podobu devìtadvacítek. MiG-29K je navalizovaná varianta devìtadvacítky a kromì zemì svého pùvodu létá také v indických službách. Zamýšlena je služba na letadlové lodi Vikramaditja (pùvodnì sovìtské plavidlo Admirál Gorškov). Poland fields 32 MiG-29s. It acquired them either directly from the Soviet Union, or through purchases made from the Czech Republic and Germany. This aircraft is assignedto the 1st Eskadra (Squadron) of the Tactical Air Force, which uses the airfield Minsk Mazowiecki. The striking emblem was painted on in 2009 for an air show that was heldat Goraszka. It is that of the Tadeusz Kosciuszko Squadron, which was involved in the fighting against the bolsheviks in the Soviet-Polish conflict of 1919-1920. Its core was made up of American pilots.

Polské letectvo disponuje 32 MiGy-29. Získalo je jak pøímo ze Sovìtského svazu, tak pozdìjším odkupem z Èeské republiky èi Nìmecka. Tento stroj náleží k 1. eskadøe taktického letectva, která používá letištì Minsk Mazowiecki. Výrazný emblém jednotky byl nastøíkán v roce 2009 pøi pøíležitosti leteckého dne, který se konal na letišti Góraszka. Odkazujena 7. stíhací eskadru Tadeusz Koœciuszko, což byla jednotka bojující proti ruským bolševikùm bìhem sovìtsko-polského konfliktu v letech 1919-20. Její jádro tvoøili ameriètí piloti.

MiG-29s of the 31 st GvIAP (Guards’ Fighter Air Regiment) received a new camouflage scheme at this unit. This scheme was intended to better conceal the aircraft under clear skies. MiG-29UB, serialed 50903013814 became the first 31st GvIAP plane to be repainted in greys in 2006. The left side of the nose carries the Guards’ emblem. The Russian flag and the black and yellow striping on the vertical fin was carried by all the unit’s MiG-29s, and the sharkmouth markings appeared in various forms on the majority of them.In 2009, the 31 st GvIAP was disbanded, and its machines were assigned to 6969th Air Base at Millerovo.

MiGy-29 z 31. GvIAP (gardový stíhací letecký pluk) dostaly u této jednotky nový barevný kabát. Kamuflážní schéma mìlo lépe chránit letoun pod širým nebem. MiG-29UBvýr. è. 50903013814 se stal v roce 2006 prvním ze strojù 31. GvIAP, jež byly pøestøíkány šedými odstíny. Ne levé stranì pøídì letounu najdete gardový znak. Ruská trikolóraa žlutoèerné pruhy na SOP nesly všechny MiGy-29 jednotky, žraloèí doplòky se v rùzných podobách vyskytovaly na vìtšinì z nich.

Serialed 50903014528 was the second two-seater to be acquired by Czechoslovakia. It was delivered by the Soviet Union on July 1 st, 1989. After the disbandment of the 11th slp (Fighter Regiment) at Zatec, the plane, along with nine single seaters, was assigned to the 1st slp at Ceske Budejovice as a component of the Czech Republic Air Force.

Letoun výr. è. 50903014528 je druhým dvojmístným strojem, který sloužil u èeskoslovenského letectva. Dodán byl pøímo ze Sovìtského svazu dne 1. èervence 1989. Po zrušení 11. slp v Žatci putoval spolu s devíti jednomístnými MiGy-29, jež pøi rozdìlení Èeskoslovenska pøipadly Èeské republice, na letištì Planá u Èeských Budìjovic k 1. slp.

Two-seat MiG-29, serial number 50903013244 was the first of two aircraft of this type to be procured by the Czechoslovak Air Force. It was delivered on April 28th, 1989, and served with the 11th Fighter Regiment at Zatec. After the breakup of Czechoslovakia, it was assigned to the Slovak Air Force, where it flies with the 1st Fighter Squadron at Sliac. The aircraft was updated with navigation equipment and systems, and so was redesignated ‘UBS’. Dvoumístná devìtadvacítka výr. è. 50903013244 byl prvním ze dvou strojù tohoto typu, který obdrželo èeskoslovenské letectvo. Byl dodán dne 28. dubna 1989 a poté sloužilu 11. stíhacího leteckého pluku v Žatci. Pøi rozpadu Èeskoslovenska pøipadl Slovenské republice, kde létá u 1. stíhací letky na letišti Sliaè. Letoun prošel modernizací, která spoèívala v zástavbì navigaèních prostøedkù/systémù, a zároveò byl pøeznaèen na verzi UBS.

Azerbaijan received a total of 15 MiG-29s (14 single seat and one two-seater) between 2006 and 2009, when it purchased surplus aircraft from the Ukraine. They were taken from Ukrainian storage, went through overhaul, were modernized and received new paint. Currently, it serves at Zeynalabdin Tagiyev Air Base near Baku, formerly knownas Nasosnaya. Azerbajdžán získal celkem 15 MiGù-29 (14 jednomístných a 1 dvoumístný) letech 2006 až 2009, kdy koupil pøebyteèné letouny z Ukrajiny. Letadla byla dodána z ukrajinských skladù, prošla generální opravou, modernizací a dostala nové kamuflážní schéma. Nyní slouží na základnì Zeynalabdin Tagiyev poblíž Baku, døíve známé pod názvem Nasosnaja.

This two-seater served with the 1st slp for only a short time. At the 1st slp (Fighter Regiment), the aircraft acquired some tiger inspired graphics, and some touched up areas after repair work. In 1995, this aircraft became part of a deal that saw them go to Poland for W-3A Sokol helicopters. In Poland, she received a camo scheme composed of greys after overhaul, and received the number ‘28', serving with 1st Squadron of the fighter air force. U 1. slp létala tato spárka pouze krátce a dostala zde tygøí doplòky na VOP a jinou barevnou podobu opeøence na levé SOP. Pravý koncový oblouk nese po opravì nový nátìr.V roce 1995 se stala souèástí obchodu, kdy byly všechny èeské MiGy-29 prodány do Polska výmìnou za vrtulníky W-3A Sokol. V Polsku byl letoun po generální opravì pøestøíkán kamuflážním nátìrem složeným ze šedých barev a pod èíslem 28 pøidìlen k 1. eskadøe stíhacího letectva.
