About PISIKAalaman
In the past, the UP Physics Association conducted the Inter-University Physics Quiz Bee which aimed to bring out the mostbrilliant physics students within the university level. The projectwas doing well, until the need to focus on the secondary level forbetter physics education and achievement was perceived. Thisgave way to various academic physics seminars for secondarylevel students, the first being held back in 2003 entitled ―FindingNemo: The Quantum Way.‖
Further expanding from these seminars, PISIKAalaman was initiat-ed in 2004 by then Vice President for External Affairs MichaelAndrei Paguio, featuring the academic physics seminars and aninterscholastic physics quiz bee for high school students.
This allowed the organization tocontinue to spread informationregarding developments in physics andphysics education, while encouragingnumerous schools to achieve higherstandards of physics learning.

PISIKAalaman 2011
A Message from the PISIKAalaman Chairperson
When I was younger, I was fascinated with how everything worked. Ilooked at how the insects moved; I marveled at the sunsets and theweather; I took apart toys and clocks to see how they wereconnected. Of course, I wasn’t able to answer all my questions aboutthe things I wondered, but that didn’t stop me from being curious.
This is what science —in particular, physics —is all about. Every daymore and more knowledge about the workings of the universe is be-ing discovered because there are people in the world who did notstop being curious. These people have kept their drive to find theanswers to their questions, even if the question seems daunting orimpossible.
Today, as you go through the seminars and the competition. I inviteyou to share our curiosity and amazement by seeing the universethrough the eyes of a physicist. Being a physicist isn’t about solvingequations all day or being limited to a single profession; it’s aboutlooking at everything in a different light, and describing it in themost beautiful language in the world —mathematics. I hope that thePISIKAalaman 2011 will be an enjoyable and inspiring learningexperience for you, and that you will come to find the beauty that wesee through physics and its range of applications.
Be curious and stay driven!

A Message from theUPPA Adviser
Dear Students, Teachers, and all Participants, greetings!
It is my honor to wish this exciting day to give your good andlasting impression to your scientific life.
Events like PISIKAalaman by the UP Physics Association, through the help of the National Institute of Physics of theCollege of Science, UP Diliman, aim to foster awareness of theimportance and role of Physics in the development of ourordinary curiosity of Nature and consequently efforts towards
conservation. PISIKAalaman also tries to point out thesignificance of the tradition of contests in Physics in raising thelevel of quality of knowledge inPhysics in our students besides thegeneral public, through the help of our mentors -- teachers. Ourteachers, for instance, are crucial inmaintaining the proper passing on
of our knowledge of both what istrue, and untrue, about Nature.Meanwhile, the students of todaywill have to do the same inwhatever vocation they may havein the future.

“Luntiang Liknayan (Green Physics)” as the theme for this year's
PISIKAalaman reminds us that our curiosity of Nature must beaccompanied by our responsibility to keep Nature in its currentbest state, if not better than yesterday. We can, and must, usePhysics in sustainably harnessing the best of Nature in theservice of true Humanity.
May your experience in this event result to very positive impactin your academic career. May the same inspire all of you indiscovering our answer to scientific riddle: Nature. Let us all
thank UPPA and its current officers in putting their efforts inmaking this event possible. Without their seriousness and zealin their roles, this even would not even materialize. Congratu-lations, UPPA! Good job, Officers!
Wishing you all the best in PISIKAalaman,
Johnrob Y. Bantang, PhD UPPA Senior Adviser

A Message from theUPPA President
Welcome to PISIKAalaman 2011: Luntiang Liknayan!!!
PISIKAalaman is on its eighth year today. Through the years, itserves as a way of the UP Physics Association (UPPA) in upliftingPhysics to high school students and teachers. I hope that this eventhas increased your interest and awareness in Physics. Through thePhysics problems presented in our quiz bee, your skills in problemsolving are tested and developed. The seminars must have givenyou a different angle in viewing Physics especially in the field of making the world greener.
With all of these, I hope that you are enlightened by the fun thatPhysics can bring. I wish that this has alsoencouraged you to get a Physics degreein college.
On behalf of the UPPA, I would like tothank you for participating in PISIKAala-man 2011. Without you, this event willnot be made possible and enjoyable as itwould be. Let us move forward and save
the earth through Physics!

The UP Physics Association (UPPA) is anon-stock, non- profit students’
academic and scientific organizationofficially recognized by the Universityof the Philippines – Diliman Office of Student Activities, by the UP DilimanCollege of Science Office of Studentand Public Affairs, and by the NationalInstitute of Physics administration.
Founded on 17 December 1980, it is dedicated primarily to thepromotion of careers and interests in pure or applied physics, oriented
towards the concerns and aspirations of students interested in thesefields. It has three general objectives:
1. To promote the common interest and individual development of physics majors and other students interested in this field;
2. To advance the study and awareness of physics in all its aspectsamong students and the general public; and
3. To cooperate with the UP physics faculty for the improvementof the National Institute of Physics.
These objectives are met through a variety of projects and activitiesconducted by the UPPA such as the university-wide Physics Month andthe nationwide PISIKAalaman.

The National Institute of Physics (NIP) is the premier physics
school in the Philippines and it aims to extend this title overthis region of the Pacific. Established as a national institute in1983, the NIP is now housed in the National Science Complexat the University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City.
National Institute of Physics
NIP offers both undergraduate degrees – BS Physics, BS Applied
Physics – as well as graduate degrees – Diploma in Physics, MAPhysics, MS Physics, Ph.D. Physics – to over 350 students yearly. Italso caters to over 1000 non-major students per semester inaccomplishing physics course requirements. Moreover, the NIP alsoco-implements the graduate programs in environmental scienceand materials science of the College of Science and the College of Engineering, respectively.
The National Institute of Physics also boasts of housing six differentresearch laboratories – Condensed Matter Physics, InstrumentationPhysics, Photonics Research, Plasma Physics, Structure andDynamics, and Theory Group. Esteemed Scientists, NIP Faculty andstudents, all work together in these laboratories and discoveringinnovative ideas for our country.
