FAMILY FUN NIGHT – Wednesday, October

31st @5:30 p.m.

From the Board for October It is an exciting time for us here at Southwood Memorial

Christian Church. Finally, the temperatures are indicating that Fall

has arrived and with it the hustle of the final months of our year.

Stores are already putting out displays for Halloween,

Thanksgiving and even Christmas. There are so many activities

that we can scarcely fit them into our busy calendar. As we enter

this time of year let us remember to give thanks and exalt God.

David speaks of the attitude that we should all have in one of his

psalms: “My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast; I will sing, yes, I

will sing praises! Awake, my glory!

Awake, harp and lyre! I will awaken the dawn.

I will give thanks to You, O Lord, among the peoples; I will sing praises to You among the nations.

For Your loving kindness is great to the heavens and Your truth to the clouds.

Be exalted above the heavens, O God; Let Your glory be above all the earth.” (Psalm 57:7-11)

Do the people we see each day know that we praise God? Do we give thanks to Him before all people? We as a society have allowed God to be marginalized. It is no longer considered appropriate to mention anything about God in public. As we launch into this busy time of year, let’s remember to praise God and keep Him in the center of ALL we do. God WILL glorify us when we glorify Him. Jim Cullen, Board Chairman

Ryan’s Ramblings… Dear Church Family, I’m sure that each of you is back in full swing after a crazy summer

and I pray that God will continue his blessings over you as Fall

begins and we begin to think about Thanksgiving and Christmas.

CHRISTMAS!?!? YIKES! ALREADY?! Yep. It’s only 3

months away.

I’d like to take this time to give you an update on the status of the

Youth Ministry at SMCC. I’m proud to say that we continue to

grow spiritually and numerically in our youth ministry. Here are

just a few items of importance that you should know…

K-5th grade Sunday School has grown to nearly 35 children

per Sunday morning.

Children’s Youth groups is averaging nearly 25 children

per Sunday night.

Student Sunday School numbers are averaging almost 25

per Sunday.

Student Youth groups are averaging almost 30 per Sunday

night.

We currently have more children & students attending

worship services than ever before. They are begging their

parents to bring them to church!

I’d like to thank ALL of those who have worked so hard to help

our Youth Ministry grow! Thanks to Susan Baker for coordinating

the new Children’s Youth Groups initiative! Thanks to Leslie

Jones & the Christian Education committee for all of their work on

Sunday School and other activities. Thanks to ALL of our

teachers, volunteers, leaders, and givers for their time & energy!

Each of YOU has helped make this ministry a success!

I’d love to share more with you about all that our Youth Ministry is

doing but I don’t have the space. Haha. However, if any of YOU

has a question about the youth ministry please come and ask ME.

Want to know more details about the YM? ASK ME. Want to

know what I think on certain issues? ASK ME. Want to know

where I’d like to see us move in the future (i.e., my vision)? ASK

ME. I’d love to share with you what God is doing in the lives of

our children and students.

God is good, all the time. And all the time, God is good!

Blessings,

Pastor Ryan

From Pastor Rick Vernon I recently shared an excellent article with our church board

written by my friend and colleague Rev. Dr. Mark Benson, pastor

of Gordon Street Christian Church. It was posted in one of their

recent church newsletters. Mark’s article was giving thanks to his

congregation for allowing him to attend a conference on church

revitalization. In his article he wrote about several things Gordon

Street Christian Church is doing well. He also wrote concerning

revitalization possibilities that as a congregation they should

consider investigating. He wrote about the fact that they should

look at new ways to bring people in surrounding communities

into worship. He even covered the fact that it may be

uncomfortable (my word) for some but necessary just the same.

To my friend and colleague…Thank You! Well done, Mark. It

was an excellent article shared with the hope and vision of great

increase in corporate worship.

Revitalization doesn’t necessarily mean doing away with what

is comfortable to some. It also recommends adding other

elements of worship styles to provide a more diverse palette of

worship offerings. Revitalization helps to bring those who have

found little meaning or pleasure in corporate worship back into a

healthy worship life. It must also fit their lifestyle as well as their

generational attitudes.

As your senior pastor for twelve years, I want to once again

thank you for becoming a leading example of church

revitalization. In my almost thirty-three years as a member,

leader and minister of our congregation, I consider this one of our

greatest accomplishments for the growth of the Kingdom of God.

Again, I remind you that I am speaking of the 9:02 service. This

service just celebrated its one-year anniversary and it has far

surpassed the growth I expected for the first year. Yes, a few of

our previous 8:30 am and 11:00 am worship attendees have

moved to the 9:02 service because of its “come as you are” and

“feel free to express yourself” style of worship. That’s another

point of revitalization. This is the same step we made decades

ago when we added our 8:30 am service to “come as you are.”

Remember, in the infancy of the 8:30 am service, there were

concerns of how that service would affect the 11:00 a.m. service.

The measuring rod should always be; “How many people have

made a profession of faith in Jesus Christ and been baptized

through a particular worship service?” In the case of all three of

our services over the last decade, several hundred have come to

the saving grace of Jesus Christ.

Although I am in my final weeks as your pastor, I still remain

a member, leader and visionary for my home church, Southwood

Memorial Christian Church. With God’s Hand, we have built

another “bridge to the future” for our ministries. All across the

state, other churches are looking at our model of revitalization.

Every Sunday, new people are finding “joy in church” on our

campus. Even more than that, they are developing a new found

relationship with Jesus Christ and spiritual growth. That has

always been my goal for our church as a leader and pastor.

I am very aware of those with concerns about which service is

carrying the financial weight. The answer is - “all of them.” All

of us must strive to make sure we provide our gifts, talents and

resources for the Godly reasons of making disciples and building

lasting relationships. It is even a greater responsibility for those

of us whom God has blessed with abundant resources. It is the

way we give glory to God for our blessings. It is our gift in

developing and training disciples for generations to come.

Although we come from diverse backgrounds, different

generations and different levels of gifts and talents, whichever

Southwood worship service we choose to attend, we still remain

“one church, one faith, one baptism.” I continue to challenge

you all to share with me and Pastor Ryan your visions for

Southwood Memorial Christian Church…one year from

now…three years from now…five years from now…even ten

years from now. Old Testament scripture teaches us; “They

perish because of lack of vision.” For 65 years, vision has taken

SMCC to new heights in ministry. Please be faithful, trust God

and watch what he is about to do. After all it is “His Church.”

Let us display attitudes of faithfulness and encouragement and

grow the Kingdom of God in a mighty way! I love you all.

PROPERTY COMMITTEE REPORT Have you noticed the changes taking place on our campus?

The exterior doors to the Education Building have been painted. Thank you, Judith and Heather Kennedy. A safety rail has been installed upstairs in The Education Building. Thank you, Harper and Brenda Grant. The double doors leading from the Andrew’s Building to the cooking shelter have been

painted. Thank you, Kirby and Mary Hardy. The stained ceiling tiles in the Family Life Center and the restrooms have been replaced. Thank you, Richie Williamson. The following is an updated list of projects that an individual or family may be interested in adopting:

1. Pressure wash the covered walkway

2. Pressure wash the Andrew’s Building

3. In the Andrew’s Building, enclose the area where the

dishwasher was located

4. Pressure wash the storage building next to the cookers

5. Clean all light fixtures

6. Replace stained ceiling tiles next to chimney in Education

Building

7. Remove dirt dauber nest on both side entrances to

sanctuary

Information on these and future projects are hanging on the project tree located near the main entrance to the Family Life Center. On this “Project Tree” is a “leaf” that describes the project along with a photo. Let’s put forth an extra effort to have this “tree” shed all of the “leaves/projects” before winter. Contact Bruce Williamson at 559-3484 if you have any questions.
