James Paddock, Sr. was mistakenly listed with the incorrect role code in the

2010 – 2012 journals. His role code should have been PSV-PT in 2010, then PAS

in the 2011 and 2012 journals.

Dennis Benale’s start date at Kinlani was listed as 6 June 2000 in past journals, but

the correct date is 1 June 1988.

INSTRUCTIONS TO STUDENTS

New candidates in the courses of study must first receive a local minister's license from the

church board of their local church. After holding a local license for one year, the candidate may

then make an application for a district license. Each candidate should purchase from the

Nazarene Publishing House the Sourcebook for Ministerial Development. This book details the

program and curricular requirements. For further information contact a member of the Board of

Ministry.

Eligibility/Courses

The board serves those persons who are properly enrolled in the ministerial studies program.

There are four general courses administered by the Board of Ministry: licensed ministers in the

elder's program and licensed ministers in the deacon program, which includes Christian

education, compassionate ministry, and music ministry.

Ministers in any program will not be ordained without having completed their program of

study. Annual renewal of license is subject to the candidate submitting a renewal application and

Page 45: SOUTHWEST NATIVE AMERICAN DISTRICT - Church of

approval by the Board of Ministry.

Modes of Study

College: the recommended mode of preparation for full-time Christian services is by

attending one of the Nazarene colleges or universities. A student who graduates from the

appropriate program of study will be graduated from the course of study as directed by the

Manual, paragraph 424.1.

Students graduating from the other liberal arts schools or seminaries are responsible

for achieving at least minimum requirements as set by the Manual statement 424.1.

Home Study and Extension Studies

Nazarene Native Mission Training Center (NMTC), formerly Nazarene Indian Bible College

(NIBC), in cooperation with the Board of Ministry, is providing ministerial studies training by

extension. Students not able to attend college are encouraged to participate in this program.

Upon completion of each course NMTC will certify to the District Board of Ministry your

completion and progress.

Those needing or desiring to take a course by directed study (home study) should purchase

the appropriate test and secure the required reading books. When the candidate is ready for the

examination, contact the secretary of the board or NMTC. The secretary of the board or someone

from NMTC will arrange for a proctor to administer the exam. That person will also notify the

board of course completion. Book reports must be submitted on reading books. These reports

should include author, title, date completed, a summary of the book, and a statement of how this

book has helped you with your ministry. The courses of study for various licenses are found in

the Sourcebook for Ministerial Development.

Page 46: SOUTHWEST NATIVE AMERICAN DISTRICT - Church of

Eight-Year Restriction

To qualify for ordination, candidates must achieve graduation from the course of

study within eight years from the granting of the first district license. Any exception, due to

unusual circumstances, must be recommended to the district assembly, including a specified

time limit by the Board of Ministry and be subject to the approval of the general superintendent

in jurisdiction.

Where to Go for Assistance

IV. Daily Proceedings

Saturday, June 7, 2014

The 12th

Annual Assembly of the Southwest Native American District was opened by

District Superintendent, John R. Nells at 8:36 am with a prayer. Jonathan Nells led three

worship songs.

General Superintendent, Dr. Busic, was introduced by the district superintendent as the

presiding chair for the SNAD assembly. Dr. Busic expressed delight for he and his wife,

Christi’s attendance. He introduced his wife Christi and told about his three children. Megan is

an intensive care nurse, and has a daughter and granddaughter named Kennedy. Ben is a

Certified Public Accountant and his youngest daughter is a senior at Northwestern University.

Page 48: SOUTHWEST NATIVE AMERICAN DISTRICT - Church of

His appointment as general superintendent gives him jurisdiction for Asia, Japan and places in

the world he has never been before. He said, “You are part of something big. There are 2.2

Million Nazarenes, so we are a blessed people.” He explained the purpose of the annual

convention and assembly is to be encouraged, strengthened, and lifted up, and to acknowledge

that God is in control. We are to be accountable for the work we are assigned, where we come

short, we have to admonish. We can do better. We are also here to do business today. But the

main reason is to meet with God and put ourselves before him to renew us.

Dr. Busic read Mark 6:30-44, explained the importance of why this story is written in

four gospels. The mission of teaching and healing has been the hall mark of our ministry.

Bethany, Oklahoma is referred to as the Nazarene ghetto. There are three institutions, a church, a

school, and an orphanage that were established with the town in the beginning and remains today

including the Southern Nazarene University. The scripture refers to how ministry can be very

exciting and at the same time very exhausting. Just like then and today there is a need to take a

break and get away for a few days. When Jesus left with disciples to get away for a rest, he met

thousands of other people on other side of the waters waiting to greet them, he had compassion

on them. They were like lost sheep without a Shepard. It was late in afternoon. Jesus said it is too

late to send people away and we need to feed them. The disciples said, we do not have adequate

resources to meet this great need. Jesus said to give something to the people. The estimated cost

amounted to 6 months wages to pay for the meals. Resources are limited. But instead, Jesus

asked what do you have? The response was 5 loaves and 2 fish. Then he gave specific

instruction to have the people sit in groups on the green grass. Green grass mentioned in the

Bible represents glory of God revealed, sign that power of Jesus is present. In Jesus’ hand all

Page 49: SOUTHWEST NATIVE AMERICAN DISTRICT - Church of

things become multiplied, gave to disciples to complete the miracle. All the people ate and all

were satisfied. They had 12 bushels left over!

The needs of ministry will be overwhelming. There will always be more need than

available resources. We need God size dreams. He instructs to bring what you have. I

experienced a situation such as that, being in a hotel after being elected as general superintendent

and I felt God’s presence speak to me. I had negative excuses such as I am not adequate, I am

too young. But God said, my grace is sufficient, feeling unprepared and inadequate, so you can

depend on me. All he wants us to do is just bring our needs to Jesus as a small part of the

equation. Jesus always makes up the difference and provides more, above and beyond! Myth of

scarcity. You have more than abundance. Jesus says give me what you have. Bethany First

Church took on the challenge to support the churches in Swaziland where over 50% of the

population has HIV/AIDS infection. A group from church went to visit Swaziland to help them

get water and the local pastor said normally we would have cows but no more cows only a goat

that was slaughtered and used to feed us. No water for seven or eight miles away. Some fifteen

to twenty thousand people are dying before us. Pastor said there is a water well, electricity goes

out too often. The need is too great but God can do a miracle. Fred Evans, a local church

member, was an engineer, visited and inspected the water well. With his knowledge, he

designed and built a water well that was powered by solar energy. We returned to the area again

after nine months to see what God has done. The environment was different with green grass and

livestock and animals. The solar well would supply water for 50 years. The government

inspected the well and said, “this is the best model we have seen.” As a result, all seventeen

Nazarene clinics have fresh water wells. Coca Cola Company partnered with us and provided the

Page 50: SOUTHWEST NATIVE AMERICAN DISTRICT - Church of

water wells. God multiplied and made more. Jesus wants to know what you have. Pray for

miracles and patches of green grass. Every pastor can see green patches of grass.

Dr. Busic called the assembly to order at 9:39 am. Introductions of Southwest Native

American District officers included John R. Nells, District Superintendent, Marilyn Van Yazzie,

District Secretary, Kristine Laughter, District Treasurer and Nancy Martine Alonzo, recording

secretary, were made.

District Secretary called for delegates to be seated in the first four rows. Pages were

Vanessa Nells and Wendy Ortega. Board of Tellers #1 would include Wilkinson Sage,

Chairman, Sharon Draper, and Selena Nells. Appointees for Board of Tellers #2 were Michael

Andrews, Chairman, Becky Pohawpatchoko, Sam Yazzie and Virginia Yazzie. Special Order of

the Day was a request to send greetings to Sister Bernita Gunn. Delegate alternates were seated.

The Board of Ministry report was read by the district secretary. There was a motion and

second to accept the report, which passed with unanimous vote, with an amendment to include

Merrill Jones be granted a local minister’s license.

Dr. Busic introduced and recognized Juanita Nells, inviting John R. Nells to give his

report. He noted that our district superintendent served 29 years including 12 years in merged

district. He has been married for 43 years. His children and grandchildren love and serve the

Lord. He has been a good leader in his family as well as for the district.

John R. Nells recognized Rev. Ron Fay and his wife Carol, for their service to the

Southwest Native American District. They were presented gifts of two pillows with Native

American design. He also expressed his delight to see, Rev. Beulah Campbell, retired

missionary, in our assembly.

Page 51: SOUTHWEST NATIVE AMERICAN DISTRICT - Church of

John R. Nells read his written report. He explained that internet connections had been

lost with Church of Nazarene headquarters due to technical difficulties, and will insert the

numbers for new membership when the connection is restored.

Rev. Nells concluded his report. Dr. Busic expressed thanks to God. He requested Mr.

and Mrs. Nells to kneel at the altar for prayer. He stated none of us know the burdens that our

district superintendent and his wife face, and requested the district ministers to gather around

them, and prayer was led by their son, Jonathan Nells.

District Superintendent gave us a challenge to conduct an hour of prayer for leadership

development each week for the Lord of the harvest to send workers for this district and God’s

ministry. A special love offering was taken for the district superintendent and his spouse.

The Nominating Committee Report was read by the Secretary and written copies were

provided to the delegates. Motion and second were made to accept the report and the motion

passed unanimously. Board of Tellers # 1 passed the ballot out to the delegates.

John R. Nells explained that the pastor’s report be limited to three minutes. We had you

report in your zone caucus in the pass. You are to report on conversions and significant events.

The district secretary called five to seven churches at a time to line up and share their praises.

Arnie Short from Parker church was first to report. He said prayers brought new people

to his church. A new family joined us, they were asked by their children to drive them to church.

Thank God for these beautiful people, they are the best cooks. We did far too many funerals, but

proud to represent Church of the Nazarene. I retired from my secular job due to a kidney

transplant, and after finding that I was doing well, decided to get back to work. I’m helping with

spiritual issues, and drug and alcohol recovery, even impacting tribal people in Canada. I love

Roberta, my wife of 21 years, and eleven year old son.

Page 52: SOUTHWEST NATIVE AMERICAN DISTRICT - Church of

John Williams, from South Tucson Community church, reported next. God works in our

church. I have preached on lost coin for six weeks. Our church performance may not look good

on paper, I relish in joy, and Angels rejoice six times, glorious celebration that God has called us.

Had opportunity to pray with three souls to usher them in to death’s door. We are still building

God’s kingdom.

Ray Stillings of Somerton came to report. We had four converts and baptisms in

Colorado River with strong currents. We are still doing jail ministry. Diablo was involved in

gangs in Los Anglos and terrorized others. I thought about not being able to minister to convicts

but God has shown me, it is not about me, but His story. Diablo said he never thought he could

be good enough to get saved. Another amazing conversion was Fernando, a bad person who did

everything bad in the book and said, “I never knew it was possible for God to forgive me.”

Youth are leading the church along without their parents and that breaks our hearts. Little kids

knelt down beside their bed at camp to pray every night and that was so touching.

Herman Nells, from Ramah Navajo reported, we have experienced a heavy loss of lives

in our church this year. But we know He is the God of the living, like angels. We have

experienced revivals, forgiveness, restoration, and young people coming into the church. We are

grateful for the young seekers.

Kaye Gene Yazzie of New Life reported the church is doing well, budgets paid, and seen

three whose lives were changed. Our church will participate in a “Welcome Home” celebration

with escorts riding motorcycles and horses, on June 14, 2014 for one of our own, a helicopter

pilot. You are invited to join us. In addition to taking care of our church, I am serving my last

year with National Guards, and will retire next year, for service of 20 years. Participation in

motor cycle activities provides opportunity for one to one witness. One of favorite verses is Ps.

Page 53: SOUTHWEST NATIVE AMERICAN DISTRICT - Church of

91:11, “For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.” is written on

my motorcycle and I am often asked about that and that serves to engage a witness. Last month

participated in a three day run that involved many areas including Dilkon. As stated in Hebrew

Chapter 13, “ May the Grace of God be with you.”

District Advisory Board Report was read by the district secretary. Motion and second

was made to approve the motion. There were two additional requests:

(1) Dr. Julian Gunn requested to add Juan Martine to item #7 to acknowledge his passing, he

was a former minister. Dr. Gunn attended his funeral service a short time ago. Response

by the district superintendent was that Juan Martine was retired for several years, not a

current minister and will be recognized in Memoirs recognition.

(2) There was a request to amend to approve the transfer of Donna Arthur from New Mexico

District to the Southwest Native American District. The vote for approval was

unanimous.

Board Tellers Report for District Advisory Board election for Minister was as follows:

Raymond Long 31; Arnie Short 18; Kaye Gene Yazzie 10; Wilkinson Sage 8; June Stillings 1.

Board of Tellers Report for District Advisory Board election for Lay Person was as

follows: Ladonna Crabb 28; Rueben Nells 30; Becky Pohawpatchoko 19.

Board of Tellers Report for Board of Ministry election with term to expire in 2017 was as

follows: Dennis Benale 50; Julian Gunn 56; Roberta Short 50; Leland Conway 29; Jonathan

Nells 43.

The newly elected will serve, with terms to expire in 2017 are: District Advisory Board:

Raymond Long, minister; Rueben Nells, layman. Board of Ministry: Dennis Benale, Julian

Gunn, and Roberta Short.

Page 54: SOUTHWEST NATIVE AMERICAN DISTRICT - Church of

Bob Bowers, President of Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU) reported that SNAD

has 3 alumni. PLNU has capacity to develop leadership to grow in faith. A lot of students in

ministry gained first-hand experience because of Ron Fay’s work. You can go on our website to

check on progress. Potential students need to seek in prayer, doors will begin to open. Pray for

PLNU students that all increase in their desire to serve God.

Ron Fay, made a presentation and reported that Amy Williams graduated, Sonia Brown

and Vanessa Nells, are current PLNU students. La Donna Stillings is an alumni, as well as Frank

E. Paul. SNAD has at least 2 students that have attended PLNU for four consecutive years.

Ron Fay recalled that it was Rev. Pearson that made arrangements for PLNU to take young

people and paint the parsonage at Needles. John Armstrong who was a student on that trip now a

pastors in Columbia. Seminary students after that time worked with Ben Simms and Dr. Gunn

on Project Yes. Student ministry took on a” hands on” approach then, so we have been blessed

since.

Dr. Busic introduced Mrs. Esther Frejo and Ms. Nancy Martine Alonzo as current board

of directors for PLNU from the Southwest Native American District. Kristine Laughter, District

Treasurer announced the love offering for Mr. and Mrs. John R. Nells amounted of $800.

Board of Tellers #2 were called to distribute ballots for district finance committee

election as a yes or no vote for the following members: Leland Conway, James Paddock, Ray

Stillings, Andy Charley, Selena Nells, and Juanita Valdez. A vote by show of hands was

conducted, and the vote was unanimous for all ministers and lay members.

More churches were called upon to report. Justin Johnson of Nazlini was first to respond,

and said their church youth have been doing street ministry and passing out evangelism

materials, and praying with people. We hope to report gains by next year.

Page 55: SOUTHWEST NATIVE AMERICAN DISTRICT - Church of

Tony Nez of Kaibeto reported three new converts, and this is his 4th

year, pastoring. New

bathroom additions were completed on our building, so we will be clean.

Gilbert Maria of Ramah Sand Mountain stated that he has pastored eight years. We have

five converts, two boys and family. Another lady started attending church and is a sweet person

for Jesus. Another man joined our church. God is on our side. I love the lord. When John R.

Nells was the pastor in Ramah, he kept coming to our home and I was saved at 17 years of age.

My wife Rose and I have been married for 17 years, and we will continue to serve.

Corwyn Vega of New Beginnings said he was appointed last year to pastor. A spanish

lady got saved. She came with a friend, Maria and lots of children to Sunday school. She told

me “Pastor, I will fill up the church with kids”. She wanted to join the church and we had a

language barrier. I read the manual through an interpreter to her and witness the Holy Spirit

present in our meeting. She knows little English and we are still working with her to become a

church member. I witnessed at several wakes and funerals. We moved to the church parsonage,

which was once the district superintendent’s house. VBS was very successful. We paid our

budgets as the Lord has been good to us. New Beginnings is not closing.

Dr. Busic shared that he understood and sympathized with the language barrier. He said

he once introduced some pastors, as “gorditas,” which means chubby little girls.

Once every four years the Church of the Nazarene reviews its constitution and manual.

For that purpose the Southwest Native American District shall consider concurrence or non-

concurrence (by majority vote of district assembly delegates) with action of the Twenty-eighth

General Assembly held in Indianapolis, Indiana, June 23-27, 2013, amending the constitution of

the Church of the Nazarene.

Page 56: SOUTHWEST NATIVE AMERICAN DISTRICT - Church of

In the 2013, General Assembly made some changes. In order to ratify these changes the

district assemblies must vote on them for approval. The changes are already in the manual but

only in italics since they are still subject to a final vote. This is a strength of our denomination is

that the changes to the constitution and manual are voted on by the entire membership as you

will have the opportunity to do so now.

There are seven parts that requires a vote by simple majority. Ratification needs approval

by 2/3 of assembly. These are not debatable. Nothing can be changed. These are the exact

changes, read by the district secretary. There was a motion and second to each ratification, and a

vote was called, after making sure that all questions were answered. All seven ratifications were

approved by the Southwest Native American assembly delegates. This participation by the

assembly delegates shows the seriousness of what we put in the manual, and the seriousness of

your voice to have input in the global manual.

It has been a good morning. The assembly will stand in recess for lunch and resume the

meeting at one thirty for the afternoon session. Dismissal for lunch was at 12:00 noon.

Afternoon Session

The assembly resumed at 1:33 p.m. by Dr. Busic, he provided a devotion on “Lean not on

your own understanding.” John R. Nells announced that there is still no internet connection with

Kansas City.

Page 57: SOUTHWEST NATIVE AMERICAN DISTRICT - Church of

Treasurer’s Report was not available due to the break of internet communications.

However, it will consist of the same line item figures and format as previous years; if there are

any changes, it will be addressed with the contingency fund and will not infringe on any other

fund accounts. Staff will forward the report to the churches hopefully within one week. Please

contact the district treasurer, she will answer any questions you may have.

Pastor reports continued with Stephen Joe of Chi’hootso. He reported that the church

budgets are paid in full, conversions and confession of faith totaled four. One lady has been

delivered from traditional ways, renounced former religion she was formally involved in and

now professes Jesus Christ as her Savior. There was a family that was converted from the

Catholic faith. We have some Baptist believers who are also converted. We had one camp

meeting and one revival. NYI goes to feed and minister to the homeless community. Other

ministries included the KHAC radio ministry, Navajo and English language courses, and bible

studies. The Men’s ministry is going through major crises, continue to pray for us.

Julian Gunn from Apache Avenue reported that the church is alive. The local church is

producing leaders. He was proud to mention that the district NMI and NYI president are

members in his congregation. Mrs. Laverne Wilson is one of the coordinators for NYC 2014.

Our youth are attending events such as the Multi-Cultural Winter Retreat, Christian Family Night

and Elevate. Four junior quizzers participated in world quizzing. We had a Mutton Fest, with

extended family. We had missionaries, Dan and Cheryl Cox, as special speakers, and conducted

two revivals. He shared the testimony of “Maria” who does jail ministry to the women in

Shiprock, NM. She attended church as a result of the La Posada halfway house ministry. He

also shared the testimony of “Paul” who was released from prison and moved home to Dulce,

NM. We paid all the budgets and are a mission minded church.

Page 58: SOUTHWEST NATIVE AMERICAN DISTRICT - Church of

Merrill Jones of Lehi reported that he was honored to present his first report on his new

assignment. He reported that he witnessed to a gang banger who gave his life to Jesus Christ in

his front yard. The church conducts an elder center outreach, the congregation are witnessing at

their places of work and job sites. He reported three new members were added to the church and

expresses that he loves the church. He also reported of a bedside and homebound ministry, which

entails taking church to them after regular Sunday services.

James Paddock, Sr. of Dilcon First reported eight conversions. We have an annual camp

meeting, and VBS. “Rydell” is a member of Nazarene Compassion Ministry, he is a youth

leader who has a calling; a policeman who witnessed his own sister starting to attend church

services. A family of three has returned to the community adding to the congregation. The youth

visit and witness at a nursing home, church members visit the elderly in the Steamboat area and

are involved in the Winslow church renovation project. The church’s front porch is also being

renovated. They also conduct a community feeding reaching 500 community members. Mr. Bo

Paddock conducts a 12 Steps and Discipleship and Mentorship program.

Emerson Bitsui of Animas Valley reported on three investments consisting of small

groups in home bible studies, feeding outreach, and developing leaders, focusing on men as the

spiritual leaders in the home and church. He reported that Kid’s Quizzing is ongoing and will

continue to support it. The biggest support came from Sun Valley Indian School, four top

quizzers qualified to attend the regional competition. The church emphasizes prayer and fasting.

Ray Tarlton of Winterhaven Quechan submitted written report, his sixteenth and has

served twenty-six years in his community. God has blessed the church and he expressed his

appreciation of the many ministries taking place at the church. He was happy to report an

Page 59: SOUTHWEST NATIVE AMERICAN DISTRICT - Church of

overpayment of ‘funding the mission’ and fulfilled the district obligation payments. The church

is involved in monthly singspirations with Fort Yuma United Methodist Church. He loves the

Lord.

Wilkinson Sage of Twin Buttes reported that the church congregation is learning the art

of worship. They conducted a twelve day crusade for Christ, a spiritual revival for all

responders. Six people have begun attending the church. They now have a church van to pick

up attendees. The church is going to Lebanon, TN to attend a week long saturation sessions. He

shared that while preaching at a Baptist church, his sister testified of deliverance and is now

using her home to help women.

John R. Nells added that Gallup has the highest reports of the Islam and Muslim faith, he

asked for prayers for this harvest field.

District Treasurer, Kristine Laughter presented certificates to churches who “paid in full”

their district obligations. Somerton was recognized for being the first to pay dues in full.

Churches receiving certificates were: Apache Avenue, Cedar Springs, Chilchinbeto, Dilcon

comments that this is the first time everything was calm and proceeded smoothly, giving God the

glory.

Ronald Little of LeChee reported that God has directed him to the message of holiness.

He encouraged everyone love the message of holiness, that it has been a privilege to be part of,

and honored to be His messenger. He reports of five conversions. Two sisters responded to

Page 61: SOUTHWEST NATIVE AMERICAN DISTRICT - Church of

Raymond Long of Round Cedar reported four conversions this year. One couple reported

a demonic presence in the home, so Pastor Long and his wife prayed and now the family reports

that all is well. They’re focused on teaching and preaching. Mr. Bo Paddock is working in the

field of substance abuse and recovery, working with troubled youth. The younger generation is

responding and praying at the altar. We are conducting Christian Movie Nights. The Women’s

Ministry is involved in “Joyful Manna,” which consists of taking food to needy families. He

happily reported that his son is on fire for the Lord and is conducting the worship services on

Sundays. Pastor Kaye Gene Yazzie conducted preventative maintenance procedures for the

building upkeep with the church leaders. There are ongoing efforts to complete identified

projects.

Michael Winslow of Cedar Springs reported that in the past year, the church experienced

instability. In face of these challenges, he remained steadfast in witnessing for Christ. He went

witnessed to young man, who got saved, and became an encouragement at church. Lastly, he

reported that a shepherd boy and the young man have started attending, he has been blessed

hearing them share about the Lord. The pastor requested prayer for the church.

The Southwest Native American District accepted the written reports from pastors not in

attendance today. We thank each pastor who reported today.

The memorial service was conducted next. On behalf of the District NMI President,

Andy Charley, Martina Garcia presented a PowerPoint presentation of loved ones who have gone

to be with the Lord during the year. Rev. Julian Gunn introduced a beloved couple from Ponca

City, OK, Louis and Hazel Headman. They sang a special song in honor of the deceased and

Page 62: SOUTHWEST NATIVE AMERICAN DISTRICT - Church of

family members left behind. Ophelia Shirley presented a framed poem to the surviving family

members. Juanita Nells provided a closing prayer concluding the memorial service.

Dr. Busic, General Superintendent, provided closing remarks and offered encouragement

and blessings to the laymen and workers of the church. He also provided a message to the

ministers, challenging them to focus on real life conversions, and is looking forward to working

with Southwest Native American District for the next two years.

John R. Nells presented a bolo tie with a beaded rug design to Dr. Busic and a turquoise

necklace to Mrs. Busic as appreciation gifts for their love, encouragement, and assistance. A

closing prayer was made by John R. Nells. The District Assembly adjourned at 3:49 p.m.

A. DISTRICT OFFICERS

1. District Superintendent

Good morning and welcome to the twelfth annual district assembly of the Southwest

Native American District. What a warm, hot welcome, we have received in the greater Phoenix,

Arizona environment. I think some would want to be at Sun Valley Indian School right now

compared to this hot weather, however, we can all rejoice and say, “This is the day the Lord

has made; we will rejoice and me glad in it.” (Psalms 118:24).

Page 63: SOUTHWEST NATIVE AMERICAN DISTRICT - Church of

We welcome Dr. David and Christy Busic, Dr. Busic is our Jurisdictional General

Superintendent for the coming two years. It was a delight to be a delegate at the 2013 General

Assembly in Indianapolis, Indiana, to witness and experience the selection and election of Dr.

Busic. We look forward to a great working relation and I know you are God’s choice servant to

the Southwest Native American District. Our district is a praying district and we will uphold you

with prayer and support in your assignment. We are blessed to have you.

Point Loma Nazarene University is our southwest regional university and what a delight

to have representative, Rev. Ron Fay with us. We have graduates and students from PLNU who

represent the university well and are active in our local churches. We are grateful for our fine

educational institution. We have been made aware that Rev. Ron Fay, of the office of PLNU

Church Relations will be retiring the coming year. Ron has been a true friend of our district and

we will surely miss his encouragement and presence at many of our gatherings.

To the pastors/ministers, men and women called of God for His service of our district, I

really appreciate your attendance. You are special in God’s sight and your untiring service is not

unnoticed. You have been faithful to the task of the Great Commission and we personally

celebrate you, thank you.

To our dedicated delegates, Lay members of the district, your commitment and

encouragement to your pastors and leaders is above and beyond more than we can ask for. You

are elected delegates to take care of matters not only at the local church but to the district

ministry endeavors as well, thank you.

We Celebrate the Years Accomplishments

After the district conventions and assembly last year, you and your churches have

involved yourselves in revivals and annual campmeetings. We visited with some during these

Page 64: SOUTHWEST NATIVE AMERICAN DISTRICT - Church of

special evangelistic endeavors. Truly the spirit of the Lord was upon your ministry events. This

year the Southwest Native American District took in 51 members by profession of faith, 51 were

baptized professing a new life in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Throughout the year, your Zone Chairpersons did an excellent job at keeping the

challenge before us and have met with us quarterly, to update and challenge us to be more

effective in ministry across our zones and district. The third week in January 2014 we met at the

District Center, Dilkon, AZ to strategize on effective zone meetings and emphasizes, to keep the

challenges and encouragements before you. Let’s keep up the good work among us.

The District Leadership Convention (Mid-Year) January 23-25, 2014 was another

success with Dr. Jim Bond as our main speaker. Our General Superintendent Emeritus

challenged us to fulfill the Great Commission and “to make disciples of all Nations.” The spirit

of the Lord truly was among us and we praise Him for his continued visit during Mid-Year. Dr.

Rick Harvey, pastor of Bethany First Church of the Nazarene and ministry team did an excellent

job of partnering with us providing teaching materials and just an all around support.

We Welcome and Embrace the Challenges for the Coming Year

Weekly Prayer Meetings- our local churches have taken hold of the Living God through

and by prayers of our believers. I know that each church across the district took special

emphasis on united prayer and because of that, the adversary Satan, did and is trying with his

might to take away victory of our Christians by different forms of attacks. Praise be to God, the

One who takes our prayers and makes them into effective weapons of warfare has prevailed

again.

1. We are going to continue this prayer emphasis even more. Besides Wednesdays for

prayer and fasting, I would challenge us to come an hour earlier Sunday mornings, before

Page 65: SOUTHWEST NATIVE AMERICAN DISTRICT - Church of

Sunday School and worship times, to come and approach the presence of God. We have

much to pray for and surely, He will bless our efforts .

2. We are going to re-visit the USA/Canada Region, FIVE KEY STRATEGIES initiative;

(1) to, Intentional Leadership Development – this is to Recognize, develop, train and

release passionate leaders with a Wesleyan-Arminian focus. That’s going to mean that

we pray, find, select men and women, young people who would be called of God and

support them with every effort to be trained, and developed to become key leaders and

you never know, some might answer the call to preach. Let’s get behind these potential

ministers and help them get prepared to enter ministry with nothing to turn back to. In

just a little while, the District Advisory Board will report to you a recommendation for

approval for six ministers who’ve requested retirement status. We are at a critical stage

and need ministry leaders. Perhaps God is calling you into ministry, in Isaiah 6:8; Then

I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?” And

I said, “Here am I, Send me!” Let us pray even more for Intentional Leadership

Development this coming year, Amen?

We Celebrate with Gratefulness God’s Leaders

I praise the Lord for a great leadership team of the Southwest Native American

District.

Andy Charley, District NMI President, serving his first year as president, did a fabulous

job keeping us abreast of missions around the world. You served us like a seasoned veteran.

Andy, thank you for your services.

Becky Pohawpatchoko, NYI President also serving her first year as president. Becky,

thank you for leading the youth of our district with challenges only select people like you can

Page 66: SOUTHWEST NATIVE AMERICAN DISTRICT - Church of

lead. You’ve taken our youth and challenged them to be Christ-like in the early stages of their

lives.

June Stillings, your passion to lead the Sunday School department has been phenomenal.

From little children to elderly adults, you’ve encouraged us to keep the simple gospel message of

Jesus Christ through Sunday School, effective and fulfilling.

Kristine Laughter, District Treasurer, also serving her first year has stepped right into the

shoes of Juanita M. Johnson and has focused on being a good steward of district finances. You

have been faithful to your tasks and we as a district appreciate your willingness to take on a huge

responsibility. We thank you.

Marilyn Van Yazzie, District Secretary, has served us for a number of years now and her

untiring service to the district is much appreciated and we commend you to your pleasant and

kind services. You do extra work for your district, you make us look good with all the reporting

you do on our behalf, so thank you, Big Time.

Of course I need to say thank you to my wife, Juanita. Your prayers and support of me

cannot be measured, you are a true partner in ministry and our God will reward you.

Thank you District family. Your encouragement, continued prayer and support will not

go unnoticed. I want you to know that I am saved by the grace of God, my sins eradicated,

sanctified with His holy spirit and in the center of His will. I like my responsibilities and duties

as your District Superintendent and it is a joy to serve you.

Respectfully submitted,

John R. Nells

3. SDMI PRESIDENT

Dr. Nells, members and delegates of our Sunday School and Discipleship Ministries

Convention, this will be my 12th report as your SNAD – SDMI director. I started my year with

the General Assembly in Indianapolis, Indiana. I attended the Plenary Sessions service which

was so inspirational. When I stepped into that large auditorium and heard the worship team

singing songs of praise, I felt like I was floating. And to hear speakers like Gary Moore, he

spoke on Engaged in the Word which is a promotional series, and William Alvarado, who spoke

on “Making Christlike Disciples” uplifted my soul.

There were many workshops I wanted to attend. Great speakers, and with many people

and the place being so huge, one has to plan a schedule of the workshop attendance. I got to my

workshops that I wanted for my district and I got to hear Hal Perkins! He is an author, he has a

book titled “If Jesus were a Parent,” he shared about his family, he and his wife have triplets plus

one and he talked about discipling his children with love and encouraging them in every stage of

their lives just like Jesus did to his twelve disciples. It was amazing!

Saturday was an exciting day for our Quizzers as they joined with other quizzers from all

over the world! I was so proud of them, Mil Bitsui, and her coaches have done an amazing job

with the kids. Thank You, Mil, for all your hard work with the quizzing program. I’m sure she

will be sharing more of her experience later in her report.

In August, my husband and I had the honor and privilege of officiating the renewal of

marriage vows of 50 years to Dr. and Mrs. Juliann Gunn. What a joy that was to see them

recommit their vows, and to celebrate their anniversary that same day, and same hour of their

wedding 50 years ago. Their kids, Damon and Yolunda did an outstanding job and the food was

delicious. Congratulations to such a wonderful couple.

Page 68: SOUTHWEST NATIVE AMERICAN DISTRICT - Church of

In September, I attended our Women’s Retreat the leadership of Darlene Joe. It was well

attended. Our speaker was Roberta Short from Parker, Arizona. Thank you, ladies for a time of

refreshing, and renewal to our souls.

In October, our Southwest Native American District joined in with the Arizona District

for an SDMI Seminar held in Chandler. It was a busy time with scheduled zone rallies, along

with the district NYI basketball games. But I was happy and pleased to see quite a few of our

people show up. Thank you for your attendance!

In November, I was the guest speaker for CHIEF women’s retreat. It was great to see

Alfreda, Lois, Cynthia, and Huron. We had a wonderful time sharing good times. And in

December, our Southern Zone held a Christmas Banquet here at Southwest celebrating the birth

of our Savior. Good food and great people!

We attended the mid-year conference here, in Phoenix, in January. Really had a great

time, I really enjoyed the presenter there with Celebrate Recovery.

Last summer Dr. John Nells appointed my husband and I to represent our district in the

planning sessions for PALCON, to be held at Pt. Loma. So we have been attending every three

months or so, and we’ve been blessed to be back on the beautiful campus of Pt. Loma Nazarene

University. In February, we had our last planning session and PALCON is set for this summer.

Pastors, you have received your info of this refreshing time and contact us, or Dr. Nells for more

information.

In March, we attended Southern Zone Rally held in Needles, California. It was great to

see Dr. John Nells and also our District NYI President, Becky Pohawpatchoko there. Also

Page 69: SOUTHWEST NATIVE AMERICAN DISTRICT - Church of

during the month I held our SDMI district council meeting to plan for our convention. Our

theme and agenda was set at this time. Thanks council members for being there.

On the local level, our new year 2014 started off with the tragic deaths in San Luis,

Mexico, the car accident of 32 year old Sergio and his 2 year old son, Christopher. We were

there holding service when the accident happened, and the next day we held funeral service for

them. In total, there has been 13 deaths, and my husband and I officiated 9 funerals. We are a

small tribe, and when a tribal member dies, the whole community is affected. I’m sure we are

not the only pastors who feel stretched. Throughout our district God has called many home. I

miss hearing the laughter of one, Ann Yazzie, I know she was a faithful Sunday School teacher.

I feel so blessed to have known those that are already in Gloryland.

During these times God gives us the strength and words to encourage our people. I am

thankful for my husband. I have seen how the Holy Spirit works through him and he becomes a

man of God, when the power of God works through him to bring words of comfort, hope and

salvation. He gives our people an opportunity to accept Christ during the funeral services. We

have heard from a former Nazarene (from first church) that he is speaking like the old time

Nazarenes. Sometimes I have to really look at him to see if that is my husband speaking. I am a

blessed wife to have a husband like you, my husband Ray Stillings.

I am look forward to serving you in this new year. I would like to attend your zone

rallies and fellowship with you. Thank you for all your hard work, look to Jesus and the cross

that He bore, and carry on the work with His love and strength.

Respectfully Submitted,

JUNE STILLINGS

3. NMI PRESIDENT

Greetings to the Southwest Native American District Members, Dr. John R. Nells,

District Superintendent, Nazarene Mission International Council, I bring you my 2013-2014

report as your NMI District President. I am humbled by the opportunity to serve as your leader

to promote the mission and goals of NMI and grateful for the partnership and support by Dr.

Nells, NMI District Council, Local Pastors and NMI Presidents.

First of all, I thank my Heavenly Father for his guidance and his blessings for 39 years

since I joined the Apache Avenue Church of the Nazarene. I have been obedient to His calling.

One of my favorite scripture verse is John 3:16, "For God so loved the world He gave His only

son, who ever believe in Him will have everlasting life." Christ came to die on the cross for the

sins of mankind, rose from the grave to defeat death, so we can have eternal life. I am so thankful

for the plan of salvation, all we have to do is accept it, believe it and have faith He is risen. The

tomb is empty today, I praise and give Him all the glory. May God bless all of you during this

convention and in the coming months as we continue to labor for his kingdom.

Last June, I attended the General Assembly & Convention in Indianapolis, IN, and

participated in the NMI Convention, along with the outgoing NMI President, Faye Ortega. I am

extremely grateful for the funds provided for travel expenses. The highlight was to hear the

messages by the general superintendents. I was inspired and uplifted to worship with global

brothers and sisters in Christ.

In August, I presented the NMI Workshop at rally for Eastern Zone. Then, September, I

attended our first NMI council meeting at Dilkon, where we selected our theme: “Looking Up by

Fervent Prayer” as the NMI promotion project and got updates from each council secretary on

Page 71: SOUTHWEST NATIVE AMERICAN DISTRICT - Church of

plans and goals for the year. Most of 13 council members attended. I also participated with 11

men at the Work and Witness Project in Winslow, Arizona.

Southern Zone Rally was held in August, in Lehi, AZ and I provided NMI newsletter and

workshop documents on giving, month emphasis, theme, missionary speakers, assembly dates

and next NMI council meeting dates. I enjoyed a great time of fellowship with Southern Zone.

In October, I visited the Kinlani Church project and was amazed at the progress. It was

awesome to offer a prayer of thanksgiving for this vision and God’s faithfulness to provide the

resources. I also visited with Pastor Kaye Gene Yazzie and his spouse, Marilyn, at the New Life

Church. I had a wonderful visit with Kaye Gene, who also serves as the NMI Work and Witness

Coordinator.

I enjoyed attending rally at the Central Zone at Leupp, AZ and provided the NMI

information. Also participated in the Eastern Zone Work and Witness project in Paguate, NM

for the property fencing for the future Laguna church. We had 15 men and 5 women participate.

It is a great optimistic beginning. Pray that the work can continue to establish a church.

In November, the theme project for each of the 33 churches to construct a banner with,

“Looking up by Fervent Prayer” were mailed. Each church is to display this banner in their

church all year and then to bring it to the district convention to display. I presented on NMI at

the Eastern Zone Rally at Twin Buttes Church and displayed the church banner that was

completed by Apache Avenue Church. There were other churches in attendance outside of the

Eastern Zone.

I attended the SNAD Leadership Convention in January and conducted NMI District

Council Meeting. Some 15 of the 33 churches attended and most of the 13 council members

attended. The council meeting covered the treasurer’s report, district NMI newsletter, progress

Page 72: SOUTHWEST NATIVE AMERICAN DISTRICT - Church of

reports on goals and theme banner, convention logistics, financial obligation table, zone rally

schedules and next council meeting. A lot of business items were successfully addressed.

In April, I assisted the Eastern Zone NMI President in conducting an NMI breakout

meeting at Eastern Zone Rally at New Life Church.

I wish to commend Frieda Granger and Kaye Gene Yazzie, who provided leadership for

their assigned roles. Frieda is coordinating the Theme Banner Project. Kaye Gene has provided

a guidebook on facility and maintenance inventory and repair plans. I know this guidance is a

great need at our churches and I thank the two members for their efforts.

Many of the churches on our district do not have internet services available at their

church nor even computer equipment. They are greatly hampered by this limitation as the NMI

lesson materials are available only electronically. At every opportunity I have provided the

current and appropriate monthly emphasis and updated finance information. I trust that you

found this information helpful. I have provided copies of the three newsletters to guide you in

the NMI activities for the coming year. We are still not doing well in meeting our obligations.

We fell short on the following financial obligations.

I serve as the Apache Avenue Church treasurer, church board member, and Sunday

School teacher. My family and I are blessed to faithfully volunteer to clean and do building

maintenance for our church for several years. We have many challenges as the church was

established in 1947 and it has original water, electrical and gas fixtures. The Lord had his hand

of protection for our safety through these long years. We have replaced some needed and

updated appliances.

Page 73: SOUTHWEST NATIVE AMERICAN DISTRICT - Church of

In reviewing the giving obligations of NMI, our district has improved and I applaud your

great efforts. There is still room for improvement for next year. I congratulate you for your

support.

20 churches paid on their World Evangelism Fund, and 13 did not.

22 churches paid for their Pension and Benevolence Fund, 11 did not.

24 churches paid their Mission Special Fund, and 9 did not.

I am grateful for the progress we have made with God’s faithfulness to our district. I am

blessed to work with you in the coming year. May God greatly bless every one.

Respectfully submitted,

Andy Charley

4. NYI PRESIDENT

Dr. John Nells and Mrs. Nells, members and delegates,

Give thanks to the Lord and proclaim his greatness. Let the whole world know what he has done.

1 Corinthians 16:8. I am very thankful to God for this opportunity. Thank you Dr. John Nells,

district superintendent, for your assistance and support. Thank you to my family, Kerwin, for

driving me countless miles and uniting with me in this ministry. LaNae and Breanne, for also

supporting this ministry with me, time spent traveling to churches across our district.

A year ago, you elected me as your District NYI President. I can tell you, it has been

crazy - in a good sense. With God leading the way, I have absorbed a lot and I thank you all, for

your prayers and support. This is my first report and I praise God for each of you.

Speaking about crazy, you think about one of your most crazy adventures with family,

with friends or at your church youth events. One summer we went camping with friends at Big

Page 74: SOUTHWEST NATIVE AMERICAN DISTRICT - Church of

Lake, Alaska. Kerwin and the girls were gone half the morning, and he came back to the

campsite asking if I wanted to go canoeing with him. I said ok, never canoed in my life. As we

got closer to the canoe I had second thoughts. After several minutes of debating, he assured me

everything will be fine, so I agreed. But I told him to get in first. As soon as he got in, he and

the canoe flipped upside down. After that, it took twice the time to convince me to get in with

him! Long story short, I got in and we had a great time in God’s wonderful creation looking at

the calmness of the water, the thick forest around us, listening to the quietness, well, for a short

while.

This past church year has been good sense crazy! Let me take you on an adventure of

this past year: Our first journey was to the General Assembly in Indianapolis for the Global NYI

Convention. God opened my eyes to see how our efforts collecting items for the Crisis Care Kits

for the Nazarene Compassionate Ministries. My family saw neighborhoods that were affected by

the tornados in Moore, Oklahoma and Joplin, Missouri. We observed Nazarenes from around

the world and listened and heard them speak in their languages. We the general assembly using a

web cam during the Global NYI Convention, allowing NYI delegations to be involved even

though they could not be there in person. We witnessed Pastor Gordon Wong get elected as the

new Southwest Field Chair.

We had eight churches attend the Christian Family Night at Six Flags in California. It

was great to see so many familiar faces having fun in such a huge amusement park. Adrian

Crabb, NYI Vice President, coordinated our 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament at Southwest Indian

Ministries Center. I understand there was a team that drove 430 miles (one way) to participate;

this was their first time participating, and they took 1st place. Who is this team? Animas Valley!

Brad Andrews shared God’s word with those in attendance.

Page 75: SOUTHWEST NATIVE AMERICAN DISTRICT - Church of

During that same weekend, I attended a Southwest Field meeting in San Francisco. We

planned, we voted, we got acquainted with one another. This trip was my “out-of- my-comfort-

zone” moment because I didn’t know anyone on a personal level and I didn’t have my husband

by my side.

In the past, it seemed the Winter Retreat attendance was in a decline but PRAISE GOD,

this past year, the number of campers increased! We had 9 churches that brought close to 60

campers to Camp Pinerock in Prescott. Ernesto “Che” Salvatierra provided our devotions. We

had a great turn out, it was good to witness so many youth who turned their lives to over to God.

At the District Leadership Convention, time was set aside for the young people to laugh

and have fun with a team competition. Char Blindman conveyed the devotion. Two weeks later,

7 churches gathered 58 players for our Volleyball Tournament. We began with intermixing

players to get acquainted with each other. Tournament began that Saturday, churches that didn’t

have enough players combined with others churches, and teams were created. With all the fun

and excitement, we set time for God. The youth group from Shonto, led the praise & worship

time. Rydell Morgan and I provided the devotions and Brad Andrews shared his experience at

2012 Third Wave.

In March, Laverne Wilson and I attended the NYI Leadership Conference in Louisville,

KY, to prepare for NYC 2015. Recite with me, “The Lord’s Prayer,” it’s found in Matthew 6:9-

13. That is the NYC 2015 theme, THY KINGDOM COME.

Two weeks ago, many of us were in sunny San Diego. We were Born to be Royal, right?

This year a new online registration process was introduced. It was crazy, in a good sense. We

have some churches who have internet access and some who do not. Let me express, with

communication (phone, Facebook, text, email) and much prayer, our district was able to register

Page 76: SOUTHWEST NATIVE AMERICAN DISTRICT - Church of

all 4 churches with 34 young people online before the deadline. Praise God! Thank you, Fern

Pokagon and Jacinta Paddock.

Throughout the past year, I was delighted to visit your church services, youth rallies,

zone rallies, and family camps. With the many district & field events, we truly enjoyed seeing so

many new faces. I would like to thank the District NYI Council for participated in our meetings

and for all your hard work, planning the district events. Your passion and obedience to God’s

call makes serving with you, a joy. I also want to thank our pastors, local NYI presidents, and the

parents/volunteers. You are the ones making a difference daily. Every young people here needs

to understand the sacrifice made daily by those workers in your local churches. God honors that

commitment by your leaders and you should as well.

How many of you have been on a kayak, a canoe, a boat, or a ferry? Imagine being in a

boat in the middle of a lake on a nice summer day. You noticed a storm quickly approaching, the

wind is blowing heavily, the boat is rocking in all directions, your heart starts pumping faster and

faster, the water from the lake starts to get inside the boat and into your socks and shoes, the rain

is pouring down fast and drenching your clothes, your hands are grasping the side boards to

prevent you from falling overboard. How would you feel? Matthew 14:27 says, But Jesus spoke

to THEM once. “Don’t be afraid.” He said, “Take courage, I am here!” He was speaking to all

of the disciples in the boat, not just one person. Who was the one who got out of the boat? Peter.

Only Peter was crazy enough to climb over the boat. He went out of his comfort zone to try to

walk on water towards Jesus. With little knowledge of my roles and responsibilities in the

beginning of the church year, I felt like the disciples who were scared and nervous when the

storm was approaching. Let me encourage everyone, let us be like Peter, and climb out of the

boat and know that Jesus will be there. As a District, we have many opportunities to reach new

Page 77: SOUTHWEST NATIVE AMERICAN DISTRICT - Church of

families and students with the lifesaving message of Jesus Christ. This next church year, I

challenge you to step out of your comfort zone.

L. ASSEMBLY COMMITTEES

1. Finance Committee

We, the Finance Committee of 2014, commend all of the churches that paid their

district and general obligations in full.

We recommend the following:

1. We accept the general obligations as stated in “Funding the Mission”:

WEF (World Evangelism Fund) = 5.5% of current income* (sent to Kansas City)

P&B (Pensions & Benevolence) = 2.25 % of current income* (sent to Kansas City)

Page 80: SOUTHWEST NATIVE AMERICAN DISTRICT - Church of

Education = 2.25% of current income* (sent to Dist. Treasurer)

Total General Obligations = 10 % of current income (like a tithe)

*Note: Amounts contributed to WEF and Mission Specials are excluded from total income

prior to the application of allocation percentages. For example, your WEF will be 5.5% of

the following: Income minus contributions already made to WEF and to Mission Specials. If

possible, each church should go online to the “online calculator” and it will figure the new

amount you owe to WEF, P&B, and Education each time you input additional income either

weekly or monthly. Please contact Kristine Laughter or Ray Stillings for more

information on setting up the online calculator for your church. For more information on

“Funding the Mission” you may contact stewardship ministries directly at 1-800-544-8413 or

e-mail at [email protected].

We encourage each church to pay their general obligations weekly or monthly.

2. That money for World Evangelism, Pensions and Benefits and approved

specials be sent weekly or monthly online to the GTS (General Treasury Services) or by

check and mailed to:

Church of the Nazarene

Global Treasury Services

P. O. Box 843116

Kansas City, Mo 65184-3116

Since each church will be paying their general obligations weekly or monthly, then they will

be paid in full by the end of the church year. We encourage all churches to overpay the

World Evangelism Fund and to pay on their approved specials and to strive to be a 10

percent church.

3. That the District Ministries Fund and Home Missions Fund be figured by taking a percentage

of the “Total Raised for all Purposes” (District Assembly Journal, Section 2-A, Financial,

Page 81: SOUTHWEST NATIVE AMERICAN DISTRICT - Church of

Column A) from the previous church year 2013-14, and that the percentages used for each

budget be the same for each church.

4. That the following percentages be used to figure the district budgets for this year:

District = 8.50% of Total Raised last church year. (2013-2014)

Home Missions = 3.60% of Total Raised last church year. (2013-2014)

NOTE: The apportionment chart for these 2 allocations will be sent to the churches after the

district assembly.

5. We recommend that the District Ministries Fund and Home Mission Fund be paid in 10

monthly payments to be completed by April 30, 2015.

6. That money for District Ministries, Home Missions and Education be sent to the district

treasurer at the following address:

Kristine Laughter

625 W. Mahoney St.

Winslow, AZ 86017

Note: Even though the Education obligation is now considered a general obligation, these

funds are still to sent to our district treasurer, Kristine Laughter.

7. That the following will be the income and expenditure breakdown for the

Southwest Native American District for the year 2014-2015:

a. Income sources and amounts:

District Ministries Fund (last years was $54,068) $ 48,399

Home Missions (last years was $22,899) 20,499

b. District expenditures:

8. We suggest each church contribute voluntarily $25 or more to help cover the expenses of the

District Leadership Conference. This money should be sent to the district treasurer by

December 15, 2014.

9. We encourage our people to practice the Biblical principle of tithing into the

storehouse, which is the local church where one has his or her membership and/or

worships. “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house.

Test me in this, ‘says the LORD Almighty’, and see if I will not throw open the floodgates

of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it.”

Malachi 3:10

10. We appreciate the faithfulness of all our churches that are paying on their pastor’s

salary and urge that the pastor’s salary of each local church be increased this year. We

commend those pastors and their wives who supplement their salaries through secular

work.

11. We encourage all churches to set aside a special appreciation month for their

pastor(s), perhaps by food showers and love offerings. October is National Pastor

Page 83: SOUTHWEST NATIVE AMERICAN DISTRICT - Church of

Appreciation Month.

12. We request that all churches be responsible for paying their pastor’s Social Security. This

should be no less than $40 per month. According to federal law, the pastor should make

quarterly payments to Social Security on salary received.

13. We recommend that the local church assist with the moving expense of the incoming

pastor.

14. That the churches be responsible for paying their property/liability insurance in full

and that these payments be made directly to the insurance company.

15. We recommend that each church use the uniform church treasury system from the

Nazarene Publishing House or the Nazarene Treasury System software for computers.

16. We recommend that all church treasurers have their books reviewed annually.
