An additional 500 million cu ft of nat-
ural gas per day will flow to metro
Phoenix through this new 258-mi
pipeline from its San Juan mainline in
Ash Fork to Pinal County.
The route was cleared and graded, then
trenches were excavated following topog-
raphy to allow at least 3 ft of cover.
Comprised of 105,000 tons of 36- and 42-
in. steel pipe made in Italy, the pipeline
was then assembled using mechanized
welding, hydraulically bending and weld-
ing the steel from within. The pipe was
coated with fusion-bonded epoxy and low-
ered into place. Crews were able to lay up
to 2 mi of pipe a day. >>

Phoenix Children’s Hospital is
expanding to become one of the coun-
try’s largest pediatric hospitals.
The project includes six major compo-
nents on a 30-acre site: 12-level 765,000-
sq-ft hospital tower, 180,000 sq ft of ren-
ovation, a stand-alone 30,000-sq-ft load-
ing dock/central plant connected by a
tunnel to the tower and three parking
garages totaling 1,750 spaces.
The tower is structural steel with concrete
slab on metal deck. The parking garages are
post-tension and precast concrete.
Delivered in phases with the first
garage already complete, major mile-
stones include the completion of the cen-
tral plant next month, the tower comple-
tion in May 2011 and the final compo-
nent - the renovation - in 2012. >>

This newest addition to Casino
Arizona Resort & Spa, an enterprise of
the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian
Community, includes a new hotel tower,
casino addition and conference center.
The 15-story tower includes 497
deluxe rooms, a 13,000-sq-ft spa,
240,000 sq ft of gaming space and over
100,000 sq ft of indoor and outdoor
conference space, including a 24,000-
sq-ft ballroom.
Other amenities include eight restau-
rants including a high-end restaurant
on the 15th floor offering 360-degree
views of the Valley, 750-seat showroom,
sports bar, multiple lounges and an
elaborate pool area.

The first stage of the new automated
train system for Phoenix Sky Harbor
International Airport, named the PHX
Sky Train, includes the construction of
12,000 lineal ft of guideway and three
stations to accommodate the new auto-
mated train. The guideway, 9,000 ft of
which are elevated, will link three sta-
tions including one at Terminal 4, anoth-
er at the east economy parking lot and
the third connecting to the City’s new
Metro Light Rail. The guideway includes
a crossing over Taxiway R that will span
nearly 350 ft at an elevation of approxit-
mately 100 ft overhead. The construction
of the automated train also includes the
relocation of the current east economy lot
toll plaza, relocation of new utilities and
new access roads. >>

This new 400,000-sq-ft casino/hotel
will offer guests 1,300 machines, 48
table games, a 24-table poker room, a
high-limit area and a dedicated non-
smoking slot area. The facility will pro-
vide a wide range of amenities including
a 120-seat food court, a contemporary
diner, Asian fusion restaurant and a fine
dining steakhouse.
The complex will provide a number of
entertainment choices, including a live
performance lounge, a sports bar and a
1,000-seat theater venue for live concert
events with a seating capacity of over
1,000 guests that can also be trans-
formed into a dynamic nightclub.
The new 10-story hotel/conference cen-
ter includes 250 rooms and suites with a
11,600-sq-ft conference center. >>

PCL’s project A includes a new uni-
fied pump station to convey secondary
effluent from Plant 1, 2 and 3, UP01 and
UP05 to the future Tres Rios Wetlands.
In addition, crews will add effluent con-
veyance piping, new sludge thickening
facilities and improvements to the uni-
fied plant chlorine disinfection.
McCarthy’s project B involves a 37.5
mgd wastewater treatment plant expan-
sion to the existing 91st Avenue WWTP.
The construction includes a grit influent
and effluent channel, grit cyclone, grit
washer, a primary influent channel and
primary influent splitter structure, as
well as sedimentation basins and sludge

This area of Interstate 17 north of the
Loop 101 Interchange is being widened to
the Carefree Highway to double the lanes
and provide improved interchanges.
Meadow Valley is completing the sec-
tion from Loop 101 to Jomax Road.
The 5-mi project reconstructs the
existing I-17 lanes and adds one general-
purpose and one HOV lane of concrete
pavement topped by rubberized asphalt
in each direction. A center-median wall
is being constructed.
The contract also reconstructs the
Deer Valley Road interchange, frontage
roads and box culverts as well as widens
the bridges over Loop 101.
On the 4-mi Jomax Road to Carefree
Highway section, Pulice will add in each
direction two rubberized-asphalt-on-con-
crete lanes, one general purpose and one
HOV, as well as a center-median wall.
They will also widen two CAP bridges,
install drainage culverts and build multi-
ple new bridges and interchanges.

This multi-phase retirement com-
munity blends Southwest themes and
picturesque architecture with state of
the art elements, finishes and services.
Sagewood’s first phase on the south-
east half of the 67 acre site features
approximately 905,100 sq ft of con-
struction.
Two buildings will house the Wellness
and Community Center and will tie in
directly to the other two main buildings
containing the 294-unit independent liv-
ing facility. Also included to the north is
a three-story assisted living and skilled
nursing facility. There are 24 single-story
duplex-style casita units and four villas
encasing 32 two-story quadruplexes.
Landscaping, central rotunda, porte-
cochere, exterior plazas, lap pool and spa
rounds out this first phase. >>

This 624,000-sq-ft continuing care
retirement community is located on a
35-acre campus in North Scottsdale on
the site of the former Rawhide Western
Town, just north of the developer’s pre-
vious project Grayhawk.
With lush landscaping and plenty of
water features, the development includes
the 426,000-sq-ft, four-story Palazzo
Grande, providing 203 independent living
units and a subterranean parking struc-
ture. The community also includes the
53,000-sq-ft Care Center with 48 units
that provides assisted living, memory sup-
port and skilled nursing care.
Additionally, 67 stand-alone villas are
being constructed. Amenities include for-
mal and casual dining, heated indoor/out-
door pool, fitness center, library, theater,
18-hole golf putting course and art studio.
Approximately 66% complete, the pro-
ject is currently on schedule.

the middle of the existing water treat-
ment plant.
The new plant consists of a pre-sedi-
mentation basins, rapid mix basins,
sand ballasted flocculation basins, GAC
filter adsorbers, and the east basins

This project’s first phase included the
Clevelend Indians’ 42,873-sq-ft development
complex, practice fields and clubhouse.
Phase two, the main public ballpark with
8,000 fixed seats, added a home plate build-
ing that rises three stories with a team shop,
restrooms and concessions occupying the
ground floor, suites on the second and an
80-person party deck on the third.
A two-story right-field building has a
party deck with bar on top and a lower
level opening to the ball field that hous-
es two clubhouses, a batting tunnel and
laundry facilities.
A third phase was later added to con-
struct the Cincinatti Reds’ 43,000-sq-ft
clubhouse with six full-size practice ball
fields, two half fields and numerous bat-
ting tunnels.

This two-level, 180,000-sq-ft structure
of modern sandstone forms will house
5,000 musical instruments from around
the world in displays showcasing objects
from royal heirlooms to family folk trea-
sures. As visitors walk past the displays,
wirelessly transmitted audio signals will
be synchronized with video of the instru-
ments being played in their cultural con-
texts, creating a vivid visual and aural per-
formance of the instruments on view.
Designed in a simple ‘C’ shape and
surrounded by native plantings and nat-
ural arroyos, MIM harmonizes with its
20-acre desert site on the northern edge
of Phoenix. The building contains two
levels of galleries, a gift shop, dining
spaces and a 300-seat performance the-
ater. This innovative cultural treasure is
being completed using BIM-Revit. >>

This project includes a greenfield data
center and renovatations to convert an
existing medical center into a corporate
office center. Along with the 350,000
existing sq ft of hospital space, the usage
of a tower was also added to increase the
space. Another key element of the pro-
ject consisted of expanding an existing
microbiology lab. The renovated space
required demolition of an entire floor’s
interior space.
The 65,000-sq-ft Tier III data center
includes 25,000 sq ft of raised floor and
houses three 2,000 kw engine genera-
tors, six 750 kva UPS modules, three
800 ton centrifugal chillers and sixty-
four CRAH units.

This 233,000-sq-ft project includes a
five-story patient tower plus a diagnostic
and treatment building for imaging and
surgery. It includes an 18-bay emer-
gency department with a basement and
modular central plant.
The 24-bed start-up facility has the abil-
ity to grow to 82 beds without any building
expansion. Eventually, the facility can
grow to 500+ beds with the incremental
addition of patient towers and expansion
of the diagnostic and treatment areas. >>

The widening of Interstate 10 between
Loop 101 and Interstate 17 is intended to
improve traffic flow in the West Valley and
is funded with the half-cent sales tax under
the voter-approved Proposition 400.
The Sarival Ave. to Loop 101 phase
adds one general purpose and one high-
occupancy vehicle lane in each direction,
with bridges widened at each of the
crossroads. Three general purpose lanes
currently exist between Dysart Road and
Loop 101, with two general purpose
lanes between Sarival Avenue and
Dysart Road.
The project also includes a new traffic
interchange at Bullard Avenue.

Featuring extensive use of building
information modeling, this is the third
phase for the 100,000-sq-ft data center.
Crews added 19,000 sq ft of raised floor-
ing space, 14,500 sq ft of future data cen-
ter infrastructure, and a new 11,500-sq-ft
mezzanine. The project also included all
mechanical and electrical work, an
upgraded foundation, a mechanical plant
with cooling towers and a 46 kw substa-
tion for utility power. HSW built a new
generator enclosure for 11, 2000-kw gen-
erators, five of which were installed in
phase three. The project is targeting LEED

This project was divided into several
phases: Phase one includes construction
of a 6-million-gal, post-tensioned reser-
voir along with interconnecting pipe to
existing reservoirs. Phase two includes a
new 66-in. raw water transmission
main, pretreatment facilities, chemical
feed systems and raw water meter
vaults. The final phase includes a new
20 mgd expansion of the existing plant
with the capability to expand to 50 mgd.
This phase includes a pressure mem-
brane facility and dissolved air filtration
facility. Systems include pressure mem-
branes, compressors, blowers, chemical
feed and storage systems, backwash and
neutralization systems, electrical equip-
ment, associated analytical equipment
and control centers.

This ADOT project includes approxi-
mately 15 miles beginning at milepost
2.36 south to milepost 17.35.
Construction will consist of building a
two-lane roadway that is parallel to the
existing two-lane roadway. The work also
includes milling existing asphaltic con-
crete pavement, construction of new
asphaltic concrete pavement, new box
culverts, installation of pipe culverts,
embankment curb, downdrains, spill-
ways, guardrail and fence, mainline
bridge widening, construction of two
new mainline bridges and signage.
This project includes the construction
of three unique wildlife crossing bridges
for around 400 big horn sheep that live
in the area. >>

Built on a 31-acre greenfield site near
historic Route 66, this medical center
provides a needed general acute care hos-
pital for the growing city of Kingman.
The approximately 200,000-sq-ft tower
includes 70 beds and is shelled for 36
additional beds. The hospital also has a
24/7 emergency room with 22 beds, heart
services, inpatient and outpatient services,
an ICU unit, full imaging services and
laboratory areas.
The four-story building is cast-in-place
concrete with precast concrete on the
ground floor. Energy-efficient compo-
nents include double-pane windows.
The façade incorporates natural colors
such as terra cotta, beige and sand hues.
Diagnostic and treatment areas are
grouped to provide efficient flow for
patient and materials transport. <<
