PARTNERS IN CONSERVATION - The painting featured on the cover.

In this inspiring pointing by J. (raig Thorpe, Amtrak (Ommemorates the historic role of the transcontinental railroads in the preservation and enhancement of our national porks. At Grand (anyon, Arizona, the portnership originated September 17, 1901, when the Atchison, Topeka, and Sonta Fe Railway first brought visitors direct~ to the South Rim.

On a disquieting note for preservation, the service ended in 1968. Over coming decodes, the park entrance, roods, and popular overlooks were besieged by lines of cars. Then, on September 17, 1989 -88 years to the day since the first possenger train to the canyon - the restored Grand (anyon Railway renewed the promise of preservation through public access.

Now Amtrak has joined the partnership, having further restored the original connection between the main line and canyon branch. Amtrak's train is The Southwest (hief, with daily through service between (hicago and Los Angeles (above). (anyon-bound visitors disembark the (hief at Williams Junction for their transfer to the pork (lower left). In summer, many also thrill to the sights and sounds of yesteryear behind the 4.960, one of several steam locomotives brought bock to life in the

shops of the Grand (anyon Railway. A restored dome car from the 1950's further delights passengers along the 65-mile route to (anyon Depot (lower right). These tracks, too, offer a colorful poge

out of Western history, bisecting ranch lands, climbing through forests, and disclosing distant mountain peaks. Shown here approoching (anyon Depot near Bright Angel Point, the dome car is all-reserved and available for an extra fare.

Environmentalists agree: Such se~vices offer a responsible alternative for entering our most poplar, congested national porks. Aboard The Southwest Chief and the Grand (anyon Railway, the journey is also about wonder instead of hoste. This memorable pointing -and these trains -- lends hope for transportation everywhere that one day is as respectful of our life and land.
