What to Expect: The Southwest Airlines interview is a 1-day process conducted at their Headquarters facility located at 2702 Love Field Drive, Dallas, TX 75235. The formal interview lasts approximately 5 hours in total and is broken up into 2 groups; 1 morning and 1 afternoon.

You can expect your interview to be done shortly after lunch if you’re in the morning group or around dinnertime for those in the afternoon group.

Travel To & From Your Interview:

Southwest will provide non-revenue, space positive travel (free, guaranteed airline seat) from the airport nearest your home to Dallas, TX. Approximately 2 to 3 weeks prior to your scheduled interview, Human Resources (People Department in Southwest lingo!) will email specific instructions on how to reserve your flights.

In the rare case that your interview is scheduled with short notice, Southwest will work directly with you to secure transportation immediately. Note: Southwest Airlines will only provide travel on a Southwest Airlines flight, so the travel will be from the nearest airport served by them.

Hotel Accommodations: There are several hotels located close to Southwest Headquarters. Hotel, food, and ground transportation costs are the responsibility of each individual interviewee as air travel is the only expense covered by Southwest. Here are some of the hotels most commonly used by Raven’s interview prep clients:

Hotel Ground Transportation: Raven has verified that each of the hotels listed above provide shuttle transportation from the Dallas Love Airport to their property, as well as Southwest Headquarters. We’ve taken the time to speak with each hotel to confirm their shuttle hours:

Doubletree 24 hours per day/ 7 days per week Embassy Suites Daily from 4:30 am to 11:30 pm Central Aloft M-F from 5:00 am to 11:00 pm Central

As per each hotel’s front desk staff, once you arrive at Dallas Love Field, you will need to proceed to baggage claim to pick up your checked luggage. Once you’ve picked up your bags, call the hotel at the number listed above, request a pickup, proceed down to the ground level, walk outside, turn left, and find the Green sign for “Hotel Shuttle Pick Up and Dropoff” to meet the driver. Southwest Airlines Provided Ground Transportation: Southwest provides ground transportation from the Main Terminal to Headquarters if you are heading straight from your flight to your interview.

Arriving at Headquarters: If you are arriving via shuttle, they will take you to the proper entrance so don’t worry. If you have driven yourself, you can park your vehicle in visitor parking. Once inside the building, you will find yourself in the Main Lobby. Look for the People Department once you enter, as they will be checking you in for your interview. Food: During your interview, our client’s report being provided light snacks (chips, coffee, and water). We suggest you bring additional snacks (Southwest doesn’t mind). Make sure you don’t bring anything that can spill or drip on your suit…interviewing with a huge jelly stain can make things awkward! Stick to snacks like Cliff, Power, and Kind Bars that will provide energy throughout the day. Interviewing on an empty or hungry stomach makes things tough. Energy is key! Fingerprinting: Upon arriving at Headquarters, the first step will be collecting your paperwork and getting you fingerprinted. Please read below to make sure you have all of your information handy for when Southwest sends you the pre-interview documentation. Required Documentation: Southwest will require a long list of documents, records, and completed forms on the day of your interview. Here is what you should start putting together today, to make sure you are ready and not scrambling when you are offered an interview. Things happen quickly and the more time you spend preparing now relieves stress, anxiety, and pressure in the days and weeks leading up to your interview. Here’s what you should start getting ready now:

Interview Components:

● Panel Interview ● Logbook Review ● Line Oriented Interview (LOI)

Panel Interview: Southwest’s interview is a very “people” driven experience that focuses on your individual personality and cultural fit. For this reason, it is critical that you find ways to insert your personality into every answer. This is the most important portion of the interview process and the quickest way for you to set yourself apart from the crowd. As such, your Southwest prep needs to be individually tailored, cannot be scripted, must focus using comfortable language, and most importantly get you out of your shell. Self-confidence and openness is key to scoring the job at Southwest. To make sure you’re as prepared as possible, Raven offers Interview Prep that will make the actual interview feel like you’re riding a bike. Our panel interview prep typically takes three, 1-hour prep sessions, conducted 1-on-1. We use this time to focus on teaching you how to naturally introduce yourself, explain why you want to work for Southwest, talk about how you will be a good fit and bring value, and select and construct your best tell me about a time (TMAAT) stories.

Logbook Review: The Southwest Logbook review can be as quick and painless as you make it. Preparedness is key to success on this. Knowing what to expect, and when, turns this review into a stress-free event. Having your records organized and well put together is key to keeping the review short and to the point. Start by tabbing the following Southwest requested dates and times in your logbooks:

● 1,000 hours Jet or Turboprop PIC ● 2,500 hours total time or 1,500 hours turbine time ● Type rating completion dates ● Failed check rides

This is a great place to begin as it gets the core highlights ready for your review. During your Raven interview prep, we will give you a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet with more detailed numbers that Southwest interviewers will ask for. This organized document lets you kick back, breathe easy, and read them the numbers the exact way they want them. It makes the review way easier on both you and the pilot recruiter. Line Oriented Interview (LOI): The Line Oriented Interview (LOI) is a 7-minute scenario-based CRM exercise conducted in a Boeing 737 mockup simulator. The LOI has the interview candidate functioning as a Captain while two interviewers serve as a First Officer, jump seater, ATC, maintenance controller, operations personnel, etc. LOI’s will be conducted in a Line Oriented Flight Training (LOFT) style format whereby the interviewing pilot will have as much influence over the direction the scenario takes as do the interviewers. Once the 7-minute event is complete, you will be given an opportunity to debrief your performance with your interviewers. As such, any mistakes or oversights made during the event can be fully recovered during the debrief. Make no mistake, the debrief is by far the most important portion of the event. Understanding the different types of scenarios that can be presented, what resources are available to employ during each scenario type, how best to use them, and knowing how to communicate in a compressed timeframe is key to successfully passing the LOI. Raven will spend approximately 1 hour prepping you specifically for the topics listed above as part of our LOI prep. This 1 hour LOI prep is in addition to the 3 hours spent preparing for the panel interview. Understanding how to neutralize the interviewers so they are limited in their ability to make the scenario progressively worse makes a world of difference in managing the event, timing, and outcome. Understanding how to debrief your performance in a clear, comfortable, confident, and honest manner will leave you convincing the interviewers that you are a good fit within Southwest’s culture.

How does Interview Prep Help? Planning and preparing for your Southwest interview is critical for your success. Reading through this guide and working through the scenarios you’re likely to encounter will make sure you’re as ready as possible to separate yourself from the crowd, get noticed by the interviewers, and ultimately land the job. But most pilots will only go through very few interviews over the course of their career. At Raven Careers we live and breath this stuff and know how to make the complex art of sounding natural simple. Raven Careers will ensure that you sound relaxed, collected, and come off showing your best self. We’ll help prepare you for the curve ball but make it look like a soft ball. Don’t get me wrong; the process isn’t rocket science. But just like flying, the more time you spend on it, and the more repetition you get the more comfortable you’ll be. Our interview prep will simulate the interview process and walk you through the material so that on the day of your interview when everyone else is stressed and trying to cram in a few final minutes of preparation, you’ll be calm and confident knowing you have everything you need.
