Winter is usually a time where most people us rug up and stay indoors. Not our swimmers! They are all working hard with many getting up in freezing temperatures and hitting the Wesley Pool for an early morning swim. Congratulations to Cameron Gee (17-‐19), Christopher Purcell (15-‐16), Rachael Harding (15-‐16), Kara Broadbridge (12) and Patrick Pendal (13-‐14) who are all Southside Penrhos Wesley Swimmers who have been selected to travel to Melbourne in July to represent WA and compete in the 2014 School Sport Australia Swimming Championships. Cheyenne Yates was also offered a place but was unfortunately not available to attend. Like the swimmers, many members of the SSPW Committee have been working hard behind the scenes to finalise a Strategic Plan, National Funding Policy and Sponsorship Policy for our club. More information will be available soon, but it has been a rewarding exercise and I would like to thank Caitlyn Rothnie, Graeme Rothnie, Helen Harding, Stella Carrara, Lori Patterson, Lisa Biesheuvel and Nick Watkins for giving up their valuable spare time to ensure we have these important plans in place to ensure the future of our swimming club. On the 24th May, several SSPW Committee and Senior Swimmers attended the Swimming WA Swimmer of the Year Awards breakfast. It was a thoroughly enjoyable morning where we got to hear from Darren Beazley the new Swimming WA CEO and Justin Langer. One of our own referees Stella Cararra was a finalist for Technical Official of the Year, which was a well-‐deserved honour. Congratulations Stella! The SSPW AGM will be held on Tuesday 29th July and I encourage at least one representative from each family to attend this very important meeting. The Committee is in the process of determining which positions are going to be vacated by current committee members. Once all responses have been received, we will be sending out an Email to all families to advertise the vacant positions. I encourage everyone (old families and new families) to consider getting involved in your child¹s swimming club. It is not a lot of extra work as our committee likes to share the load. This is a rewarding way to learn what is happening around our club, getting to know other families and more importantly being involved in something your children love to do.

What's your first memory of swimming? The furthest I can go back is probably when I was doing level 4 or 5 and my swimming teacher was Lish Gilbert. I remember we had a race together and if she won she said she gets to kiss me. Of course at that age it sounded like the worst thing ever so I went as fast as I could. Unfortunately Lish won and she kissed me on the cheek as I tired my hardest to pull away. What's your personal philosophy on how to be a great swimmer? Have fun and enjoy it. Swimming is hard enough on its own and you don't want to make it any harder by not enjoying your time in the pool. When your friends/family find out that you coach swimming, what do they say or ask? Can you teach me? Is probably the most common question. I always say yes but it never seems to actually happen. What's the funniest thing to happen whilst you have been coaching swimming? On of the best things with coaching is that I get to keep up with fresh jokes that are going around. Sometimes my homework for the swimmers is to come back with a good joke that is quick and funny. What do you do when you aren't coaching swimming? During the year I study chiropractic at Murdoch University. I have just started my third year and I'm almost half way through the course. It will be great to be with Brad and Bundi who are also studying at Murdoch this year.
Bradlee Sheppard How did you first get involved in swimming? At a very young age I was diagnosed with asthma and it was suggest to my parents by our local doctor that taking up swimming would help improve my lung capacity as I get older. What's your first memory of swimming? Making my first state team in South Africa and leaving my goggles on my head as I pushed off the blocks for my first race. What's your personal philosophy on how to be a great swimmer? For anyone to be a great swimmer or athlete they have to love the sport they do. When your friends/family find out that you coach swimming, what do they say or ask? “Do you prefer teaching girls or boys?” “How many kids do you coach at once?” Tell me about someone who has influenced your swimming career? My sister and my father have probably had the greatest influence on my swimming career. From the moment I started swimming in squads my sister was always the one dragging me out of bed to wake up at 5:00am in the morning and always motivating me to continue swimming. My father always gave me every opportunity to be the best swimmer I can and has never pushed me into anything I haven’t wanted to do. What's the funniest thing to happen whilst you have been coaching swimming? Everyone in my junior squad calling me Brad Pitt. What might we be surprised to know about you? At the age of 9 I achieved a South African record in 200m breastroke. What do you do when you aren't coaching swimming? I still swim competitively at SSPW, I enjoy staying fit and I’m currently studying Chiropractic at Murdoch
