2019 Dear Parents, Staff, Students, and Community Members, We have just surpassed the first trimester of this school year. We hope that it has been packed with educational opportunities and fun for Southside students. Report cards were sent home. Notify our office if you did not receive one and should have. Thanks to the great efforts of ASB and our Booster Club, many afterschool and evening events are offered. This type and level of support allow Southside to continue many infamous traditions such as the Maypole event, fall fun festival, winter craft night, the spring talent show, etc. Your support of these two organizations helps immensely. Southside focuses on continuous improvement. We want to see academic and social success for every one of our students and to keep Southside as a safe and nurturing learning environment. Staff and building efforts include the increased student and staff recognition, examination and piloting of new reading curriculum, and facility improvements with the completion of the parking lot addi- tion. We have updated our safety trainings and practices working collaboratively with local law enforcement and fire departments. Southside has reached an agreement with school messenger to increase and improve communication. All of these should serve us well to support continuous im- provement. Weve had a mild start to the winter season. Please be aware of the communication opportunities regarding inclement weather. We respect parentsrights to determine whether you believe it is safe enough for your child to attend school based on inclement weather. Its a very tough call for any type of school closure but we do consider safety first. Fortunately we have new buses that are very well equipped for inclement weather and we have exceptional bus drivers driving them. There are some input committees being created that may greatly support and impact Southside. Please contact Ms. Bolender or Ms. Spaulding if you are interested in assisting with the following: Research on Kitchen and Food Service Options: Equipment from a professional kitchen has been donated to Southside. We would like to have a committee of folks to visit some neighboring smaller districts regarding food service expenses and requirements and to provide information for the board regarding the addition of a professional kitchen and food service options. If you are available and interested in helping with this project, please, contact me, Doris Bolender at 360.426.8437 or at [email protected]. New Reading Curriculum Opportunity: If you are willing and able to participate in the examination of reading curriculum, Ms. Spaulding will be looking for volunteers to obtain a parent perspective. She may be contacted via email at [email protected] or phone at 360.426.8437. Please contact me via email at [email protected] or phone at 360.426.8437 with ku- dos, questions, or concerns. We value your input and appreciate the chance to communicate accu- rate information. Have a safe and restful Winter Break. Dear Parents, Staff, Students, and Community Members,

We have just surpassed the first trimester of this school year.

Staff and building efforts include the increased student and staff recognition, examination and piloting of new reading curriculum, and facility improvements with the completion of the parking lot addi-tion. We have updated our safety trainings and practices working collaboratively with local law enforcement and fire departments. Southside has reached an agreement with school messenger to increase and improve communication. All of these should serve us well to support continuous im-provement.

We’ve had a mild start to the winter season. Please be aware of the communication opportunities regarding inclement weather. We respect parents’ rights to determine whether you believe it is safe enough for your child to attend school based on inclement weather. It’s a very tough call for any type of school closure but we do consider safety first. Fortunately we have new buses that are very well equipped for inclement weather and we have exceptional bus drivers driving them.

There are some input committees being created that may greatly support and impact Southside. Please contact Ms. Bolender or Ms. Spaulding if you are interested in assisting with the following:

Research on Kitchen and Food Service Options:

Equipment from a professional kitchen has been donated to Southside.

    New Reading Curriculum Opportunity:

If you are willing and able to participate in the examination of reading curriculum, Ms. Spaulding will be looking for volunteers to obtain a parent perspective. She may be contacted via email at [email protected] or phone at 360.426.8437.

Please contact me via email at [email protected] or phone at 360.426.8437 with ku-dos, questions, or concerns. We value your input and appreciate the chance to communicate accu-rate information.

Have a safe and restful Winter Break.

Emergency School Closing Information In case of hazardous or emergency conditions, the superintendent may alter district and transportation schedules as are appropriate to the particular condition. Such alterations include closure of school, delayed openings of school and early dismissal of students. In case of an emergency early release we will call parents of all students in grades kindergarten through fourth. All students in grades five through seven will be expected to follow the procedure on their EMERGENCY INFORMATION FORM. Please tune in to your local radio station, KMAS 1030 AM during extreme weather for information on school schedule changes.

    * Please make sure students are dressed for the weather.

    Safety Reminders

In the event of an emergency at Southside it is important to remember a few key points. The school district and law enforce-ment are your sources for information re-garding the incident and reuniting with your child. Keep your phone/computer close to receive important notifications. Please do not call or come to the school, as this could interfere with emergency responders. As a district, we practice monthly drills including, earthquake, fire, shelter in place, and lock-down drills. For more information please see the Emergency Information Guide on our website.

PBIS Update: Since September, we have instituted several components of our new PBIS program. Staff members are handing out numerous PAWsome tickets to students caught doing good (Look for stamps on hands to sig-nify your child received a ticket). These tickets are entered into a week-ly drawing for a special prize or privilege. Students really seem to en-joy earning both the tickets and the rewards. In fact, a couple of weeks ago we added a new reward opportunity. Students who receive a PAW-Some ticket from a guest teacher will be entered into a special monthly drawing for a Dairy Queen treat. Besides the tickets, we are making sure expectations are taught to the students. We want them to understand what we are looking for so they have a better chance of meeting expectations. One area of great success has been recess; especially our four-square games. Students have a bet-ter understanding of the rules of the game, which has made this recess activity a lot more fun and increased participation greatly. As the year continues, we look forward to continuing to work with our students to accentuate the positives and minimize behaviors that inter-fere with all of our students reaching their full potential.

    THANK YOU FROM A.S.B.

It's been an amazing year so far for our Southside ASB. Just before Thanksgiving, our generous Southside Community donated a whopping 989 lbs of food to Saints Pantry. What an accomplishment!!! The entire school was able to partake in a Rootbeer Float Party and the top selling classes received a pizza party. We had another fantastic Believe Fundraiser with sales over $8600.00. 2020 brings a ton of fun things for our Southside kiddos. Looking forward to our Middle School Dance, Southside Talent Show and another Ice Cream Social for our littles! Please contact the office if you're interested in volunteering for any of these events. Thanks again, Southside ASB Terry Tyler, ASB Advisor

    A little note regarding attendance…

Your child’s education and attendance is of the utmost importance to us and re-quires collaboration between all parties. If your child will not be attending school due to illness, medical appointments, va-cation, etc., please notify the office as soon as possible so we may record the absence appropriately. Those absences that are not justified can result in an un-excused absence which must be report-ed as such and may result in truancy proceedings.

We are here to work with you……

    Attendance matters!

    School Messenger:

Southside has signed up with a company called School Messenger. This is so we can improve our ways of communication with our families. School Messenger is one of the largest school messaging systems. Southside will be rolling out this to our families some-time in the beginning of January. We will be sending more information home as we get closer. If you have any question please con-tact Heather in the office. 360.426.8437
