Terenure Village Market to light up Christmas TreeTERENURE Village Market (TVM) is hosting a bumper Christmas market in conjunc-tion with this year’s ‘Lighting of the Christmas Tree’ event on Saturday, December 5.

TVM will be moving the market from the usual Bushy Park venue to the main car

park in the village (where the glass recycling takes place). Trading hours will extend from 11am to 6pm.

TVM has teamed up with Dublin City Council to provide a packed family day of entertain-ment that will see local talent take to the stage throughout the day. Santa Claus will arrive

at 4.30pm to officially ‘switch on the lights’ while a snow queen on stilts along with a face painter will be busy enter-taining younger visitors.

There will be hundreds of goodie bags for children and mulled wine, non-alcoholic re-freshments and festive nibbles at the Evergreen Club.

A total of 50 stalls will show-case hot food, artisan produce and a wide variety of craft.

Terenure Village Market is a sub group of the Terenure 2030 volunteer community project, which was set up to help to promote Terenure Village as a vibrant centre of the local community.

Havin’ a cuppa for charityPICTURED are some of the girls at the Mount Merrion Commu-nity ‘Have a Cuppa for Daisy-house’ fundraising event that raised nearly €2,000.

The fundraising events that were held across the country took place on behalf of the Dub-lin homeless women’s charity, Daisyhouse.

Daisyhouse Ambassador, the RTE broadcaster Claire Byrne, said the work that Daisyhouse does in supporting women is unique.

“It breaks the cycle of home-lessness and violence and em-powers them to move on to in-dependent living,” she said. “The ‘Have a Cuppa for Daisyhouse’ campaign will raise much needed funds to enable Daisyhouse to continue to support these brave and powerful women.”

Orla Gilroy, Daisyhouse CEO, said they had 26 years’ experi-ence working with and support-ing homeless women.

“The women who come to us have many complex needs hav-ing typically endured years of trauma,” she said. “They need time to heal and providing a safe space is only part of what is re-quired to help them move for-

ward with their lives. A support-ive and tailored approach to their individual needs empowers them to improve their lives and leave homelessness behind.

“The cost of a support pro-gramme for one woman for

one month is €853.86 and the aim of this campaign is to gener-ate as much income as possible to allow us to dramatically in-crease the number of women to whom we can offer the pro-gramme.”

Reindeer Run will raise funds for RNLIThe RNLI kick-started its fes-tive season last week with the launch of the charity’s popular Reindeer Run, which will return to Marlay Park in Rathfarnham on Sunday, De-cember 6.

The well-established event raises funds to help volunteer crews at Skerries, Howth and Dun Laoghaire lifeboat stations to continue to save lives at sea.

TV presenter, author and ad-venturess Teena Gates, will be present on the day to start the run and lead the participants in the popular ‘Rookie the Rein-deer Warm-Up’.

Speaking at the launch for the Dublin Reindeer Run Tee-na said: “I am thrilled to once again be supporting the RNLI Reindeer Run in Marlay Park.

“Having been involved with this event for a few years now I would urge people to sign up and help raise funds for a great charity that is close to my heart.

“The RNLI has been saving lives at sea off the Dublin coast for generations. Their volun-teer lifeboat crews are ordinary men and women who do ex-

traordinary things to save lives and prevent disaster.

“None of us in Dublin live very far from the sea and we never know when we or someone we love will need their help, so here is a wonderful way to sup-port them. Get signed up and come over to Marlay Park and spread a little Christmas cheer

for the lifeboats.”Last year, RNLI lifeboats in

Dublin launched 137 times, bringing 185 people to safety.

“Winter months are when RNLI volunteer crews face some of the most challenging call-outs,” David Branigan from Dun Laoghaire RNLI said. “Crew training is vital for the job of

The reindeer run caters for all abilities and ages with par-ticipants choosing from a 5km or 10km walk/run, a 3k option for juniors or a shorter Santa Saunter.

For anyone who can’t par-ticipate in the event but would like to come along and soak up the atmosphere, there are a number of volunteer marshal-ling roles to be filled. To get in-volved contact Pauline McGann, RNLI Community Fundraising Manager on 0861528324 or email [email protected]

Registration is now open online at rnli.org/reindeer and costs €20 for the 5K and €22 for the 10K. Children’s tickets are €10 and a family ticket (two adults and two children) is €55. All participants will receive an RNLI Reindeer Run t-shirt, a pair of antlers and a car sticker.

Residents entitled to object ...within reason

COMMENT: Tony McCullagh, Dublin People group editor

WHILE this is very much a Malahide story, there are lessons to be learned for every community from the Christ-mas Kingdom controversy.

There was plenty of high dudgeon on the national airwaves last week as objectors lined up to talk to Joe on RTÉ’s ‘Liveline’. Being the skilled arbitrator of matters of national importance that he is, Duffy played a blinder in keeping the item balanced and fair to all parties.

So let’s recap on what the kerfuffle was all about. The organisers of Christ-mas Kingdom had received permission to operate on the public green near the marina on various dates between No-

vember 20 and January 3. It was hailed as the biggest event of its kind ever to be staged in Malahide.

Highlights will include Polar Express and vintage carousel rides; it will feature real reindeer and donkeys; a Christmas food and gift market; an ice rink; and, of course, Santa and Mrs Claus will be there to meet all the children.

It may sound like a perfect festive day out for the family but not everyone was happy, particularly some of the resi-dents who live in the immediate vicinity. They raised legitimate issues about the suitability of the location of Christmas Kingdom, citing traffic, parking and ac-cess concerns.

They also questioned why the nearby Malahide Castle Demesne could not have been chosen to host the event instead of an already busy part of the village, right on their doorsteps.

But some of those objecting raised fears about the event attracting an anti-social element to the town. To me, this sounded like a dubious argument given that Christmas Kingdom will mainly ap-peal to families with young children and is unlikely to attract trouble-makers.

The temporary loss of the public green was another bone of contention as it meant local kids would not be able to play football there for the duration of the event. Again, this was somewhat

stretching credulity. Unlike some socially deprived parts of Dublin, Malahide is blessed with an abundance of amenities, sporting and otherwise. Not having a green for a few weeks isn’t going to have that much of an impact on the health and wellbeing of children.

While there may well have been a genuine case to be made for relocating the Christmas Kingdom on parking and traffic grounds, any sympathy I had for

the objectors started to wane as soon as I heard some of the more irrational fears.

It is of course vital that residential communities have the right to raise valid objections to any event or development. But to win public support, they need to ensure that they stick to the core issues.

At the time of going to press, the final location of Christmas Kingdom was still unclear. However, the event’s director,

Andre Jenkinson, said he understood that a petition with 500 signatures in favour of Malahide retaining Christmas Kingdom had been sent to the council and they had been inundated with mes-sages of support on social media.

He added: “The last thing we wanted to do was cause any upset, especially with an event that is designed to only bring magic, fun and Christmas sparkle for children.”

A SOUTHSIDE family joined RTÉ Radio 1 broadcaster Joe Duffy at a photocall last week to an-nounce the Gift of Life Santa Dash taking place in December.

The family fun run, which aims to promote organ donation, will see hundreds of Santas dashing around the Curragh Racecourse on Sunday, December 13.

Organised by Irish Fit with the Irish Kidney Association (IKA) as the nominated charity partner, par-ticipants will be encouraged to take part in the event while dressed as Santa.

Joining Joe for the launch were Ruth Brennan with her mother Ann from Stepaside, and her son Dar-ragh O’Haire (7).

Darragh received a kidney trans-plant in February 2013 thanks to the generosity of a family of a de-ceased donor.

Twins Aimee and Annie Murphy (both 5) from Rathnew, County Wicklow were also there with their parents Kevin and Ann Marie. Kevin donated a kidney to Aimee in February 2014.

Also taking part in the photocall

was four-year-old Tadhg McElroy from Bray who underwent a kidney transplant in April last year.

She was joined by kidney donor mother Clidhna Costello.

Other Santas happy to support the event were James Reynolds, from Tallaght, who received a de-ceased donor kidney transplant in 2009 and Alison Honner from Co Laois who received a kidney trans-plant thanks to her donor sister Melissa in 2013.

Joe said: “It is wonderful to be part of this event and to meet all the transplant recipients who have embraced their good health and renewed life thanks to organ dona-tion.”

The Gift of Life Santa Dash on December 13 offers people a fun way to get together and kick start the Christmas festivities while sup-porting a very worthy cause.

It is also very timely at the be-ginning of the festive season when families come together, which is an ideal opportunity to discuss organ donation and let loved ones know your wishes.

AN INDEPENDENT report into the decision to locate the new national children’s hospital on a campus shared with St James’s Hospital has found that there will be a wide range of benefits for the local community.

The Ernest Young (EY) study was commissioned by a Communi-ty Benefits Oversight Group, which was established by the National Paediatric Hospital Development Board (NPHDB) and the Children’s Hospital Group (CHG), to see how the €650 million investment could be maximised in the short, me-dium and long term for the local community.

The EY ‘Harnessing the Poten-tial’ report found that there are a wide range of areas in which the local community will benefit.

As well as 2,000 construction and 300 jobs in services that will be created during the construction phase, a total of 3,700 national

children’s hospital employees will join 4,000 St James’s Hospital em-ployees on the growing medical campus – bringing more employ-ment and expenditure into the area.

The report found that visitors and patients will also create lo-cal demand, while education and training supports will be tailored to help people in the area acquire skills that will be required by the hospital.

The report also suggests resi-dents in Dublin 8 and some ar-eas of Dublin 12 will benefit from a focused approach to create a ‘healthy community’.

The planning application for the new children’s hospital was submitted to An Bord Pleanála in August 2015 and a decision is ex-pected from February 2016.

The new children’s hospital is the largest and most significant capital investment project ever undertaken in healthcare in Ire-land.

It will bring together the three

existing children’s hospitals; Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital Crum-lin, Temple Street Children’s Uni-versity Hospital, and the National Children’s Hospital at Tallaght Hospital.

The hospital will be co-located on one campus with St James’s Hospital and in time, tri-located with the Coombe maternity hos-

pital. It is envisaged that the new

children’s hospital will be a world-class facility providing secondary paediatric services for the greater Dublin area, and specialist serv-ices for the country as a whole.

The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Cllr Críona Ní Dhálaigh said the new hospital will be a significant in-

vestment for the children of Ire-land and an opportunity for the people of Dublin.

“This is the largest health infra-structure investment in the history of the State,” she said.

“This first report, by EY, is a hugely promising demonstration of what can be achieved by this wide cohort of stakeholders. I look

forward to supporting the imple-mentation of this plan.”

The Minister for Health, Leo Var-adkar, added: “The new children’s hospital is the biggest investment in a healthcare project in the his-tory of the State. It will bring huge benefits for sick children and teen-agers. But I want to ensure that the local community also benefits.

“This is a once-in-a-life time opportunity for the Dublin 8 com-munity and it’s right that everyone is working together to ensure that the vision is realised.”

Gordon Jeyes, Chairman of the Community Benefits Oversight Group, said they had looked at best practice across the globe to identify the positive impact that an investment of this size can have on a community.

John Pollock, Project Director, NPHDB said: “Creating awareness to the local community about the socio economic benefits of hav-ing a world-class hospital in their neighbourhood is an important priority for this project.”

Thousands sign petition to halt Marlay’s large-scale gigs

like to see a total ban on large-scale commercial concerts in Marlay Park while others would settle for smaller and fewer con-certs.

A spokesperson for Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council confirmed that a petition was received at County Hall in re-lation to the Marlay Park concert programme.

“However, the opportunity for members of the public to have their say is on each occasion that a concert licence is sought,” the spokesperson added. “Un-der planning law, the holding of concerts is always subject to ob-taining a licence, the granting of which is subject to a public con-sultation process.”

The council spokesperson also confirmed that an agree-ment has been reached between Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council and MCD Productions for a concert programme for the next five years.

This provides for a maximum of six concerts per annum with a to-tal audience capacity of 210,000, subject to licence.

“In the event that licences are granted for future concerts, the council is committed to the con-tinued development of a commu-nity-led plan for the management of the concerts and to reduce the negative impact that the concerts might have on residents living ad-jacent to Marlay Park and on park users,” the spokesperson added.

The council also pointed out that an assessment on the eco-logical impact of concerts on Marlay Park found “little or no” negative impact.

Cllr Neale Richmond (FG) wel-comed the announcement that the council had agreed a new five-year contract with promot-ers MCD to stage concerts in Mar-lay Park.

“The new contract is a realistic and thorough one that will allow top class concerts to continue to

The signatures were collected in recent months by members of South Dublin Protect Our Parks (SDPOP) - a group of residents, market traders and visitors to the park who are concerned about the impact of the concerts.

The petition urges the council “to protect Marlay Park – its wild-life, habitats, flora and fauna”.

“The first large-scale concert in Marlay Park was 14 years ago and the number of concerts has gradually increased until last year when we had to put up with a total of eight concerts, which went on for over a month,” said SDPOP chairman Brian Murphy. “That’s a lot of disruption to put up with. Not only do we have to contend with traffic gridlock,

noise pollution and anti-social behaviour as 40,000 people de-scend on the area for each gig, but the park is as good as out of bounds for weeks on end as the infrastructure for the concerts is put in place.”

SDPOP claim their members fear that the views of park us-ers, local residents and market traders are not being taken into account.

“We don’t feel we have been listened to by the council but we hope that might change with the 2,500 signatures we have col-lected,” Mr Murphy added. “It is time the council listened to all the anger and unhappiness that has built up over the years.”

Some SDPOP members would

be staged in Marlay Park while also imposing sensible restric-tions to protect local residents,” he said. “This year the council re-ceived in the region of €450,000 in revenue from the concerts, and this money is ring-fenced

for recreational use. Last year alone we saw huge investment in the footpaths in Marlay Park, the upgrade of Tamplin’s Cottage and the renovation of the Craft Court-yard, all thanks to funds raised through the concerts.”

Man tried to hit parking warden with bolt cutters Conor Gallagher

A MAN has avoided a jail sen-tence for trying to hit a 73-year-old parking warden with a bolt cutters after being is-sued a ticket.

Colin Foley (45) had already received a €120 speeding fine that day when he found the parking ticket on his van in Tal-laght.

“The redness descended on him” when he drove around the corner and saw the warden, his barrister said.

Foley, of Brookmount Avenue, Balrothery, Tallaght pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to production of a weapon and theft on Main Street, Tal-laght, on February 10, 2015.

Prosecuting counsel Seamus Clarke BL told the court that Michael Griffiths was working for APCOA, a private parking management company which was operating in a Tallaght housing estate.

There were no lines on the ground but several signs were visible indicating parking was not allowed in the estate.

When Foley returned to his van he was annoyed to find he had received a ticket.

He drove onto Main Street and stopped the van where he spotted Mr Griffiths. He took a bolt cutters from the back and put it under this jacket before approaching the warden and asking him “what is this?” in reference to the ticket.

Mr Griffiths replied that it was

a ticket before being pushed in the chest. Foley then took out the bolt cutters which the victim, who wasn’t wearing his glasses, thought was a gun.

The warden went to radio for help but Foley swung the cut-ters, knocking the radio out of the victim’s hand. Foley then picked up the radio and fled.

Afterwards he knew gardaí would be looking for him so he went for a drink to calm himself down before going to the Garda station.

He told gardaí the warden was not very polite to him and that it was a “moment of madness” when he swung the cutters.

Judge Martin Nolan ques-tioned why he had the bolt cut-ters with him if the incident was a “moment of madness”. De-

fence counsel Rory Staines BL said he could offer no explana-tion for this.

Mr Staines said Foley, who works as a painter decorator, was in financial difficulty at the time.

He said he was married with two children but that he and his wife were now separated.

Foley has six previous convic-tions including public order of-fences and violent behaviour in a Garda station.

Judge Nolan imposed a one-year suspended sentence and ordered Foley to pay over €1,000 to the victim within one year.

He said he would have im-posed a jail term if Foley had connected when he swung the bolt cutters.

She was presented with her award in the Helix Theatre in DCU by Age Action CEO Eamon Timmins and broadcaster George Hook.

Margaret was inspired to get online after she lost her hus-band, George, to a genetic disor-der called haemochromatosis, an overload of iron in the system.

Determined to ensure that no other family would suffer a simi-lar loss, Margaret used the inter-

net and digital media to build a national awareness campaign.

Since she began in 2005, more than 20,000 people have been diagnosed.

Eamon Timmins, CEO of Age Action, said: “Margaret is a truly inspirational woman.

“She became a campaigner and learned how to use the lat-est technology to spread aware-ness about a disorder not widely known or understood, successful-ly encouraging thousands of peo-ple to get themselves tested.”

The awards ceremony was hosted by Dublin City Univer-sity, which became the first age-friendly university in 2012, and leading a global initiative.

Petition calling for Traveller agency is handed in to Dáil

County Council is to engage in fire awareness training as an audit of all Traveller halting sites in the county and across Dublin gets underway.

Responding to queries from Cllr Francis Timmons (Ind) who referred to the Carrickmines fire tragedy, the council said it had re-ceived communications from the Chief Fire Officer seeking a list of all sites within each local authori-ty’s administrative area.

“The Chief Fire Officer is seek-ing a list of all our sites and is ar-ranging meetings with this local authority and the Traveller repre-sentative groups from within our area to discuss the best way to roll out fire safety awareness training and also to carry out audits of our sites,” the council stated.

“We will of course fully co-op-erate with any inspections and training they wish to implement.”

The council revealed that it has provided 16 sites with bays for caravans/mobile homes with

four of these sites classified as temporary/emergency currently catering for 31 families. In addi-tion there are 12 Group Housing-

Schemes.“All of our sites are inspected

once a year by a company who are employed by the council to

carry out inspections and to make sure that all fire extinguishers are in place and working properly,” the council added.

Pavee Point Traveller and Roma Centre initiated the petition fol-lowing the Carrickmines tragedy that cost the lives of 10 people.

It calls onTaoiseach Enda Ken-ny to establish a Traveller agency to urgently drive improvements and implement existing policies in Traveller health, education and employment.

The petition was handed to Minister Aodhán Ó Ríordáin who accepted it on behalf of the Taoi-seach.

Speaking at the handover, Martin Collins, Pavee Point Co Director, thanked the public for their strong show of support and solidarity in the wake of the Car-rickmines tragedy.

“Today we, along with our 5,463 signatories, are urging the Government to show strong lead-

ership on Traveller issues,” he said.

“What happened in Carrick-mines cannot happen again. In the month since the Carrickmines fire tragedy we have seen the be-reaved Traveller families housed in an un-serviced car park.

“We have seen a lot of solidar-ity with Travellers but we have also seen a lot of hate speech against Travellers.

“Travellers cannot be allowed to experience discrimination, degradation and be forced to live in sub-standard conditions for another generation,” he added.

“We need to see results. A Trav-eller agency is needed to drive progress in an accountable and transparent way, turning policy into action.”

Meanwhile, South Dublin

Southsidecouncils adopt 2016 budgetsNeil Fetherstonhaugh

BOTH Dún Laoghaire Rathdown and South Dublin county coun-cils have adopted their budgets for 2016.

At the Annual Budget Meeting held on Wednesday, November 4, Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council adopted its budget for 2016 which is aimed at maintain-ing and expanding service levels to ensure that benefits from the economic recovery are fairly spread across the county.

Budget 2016 provides for ex-penditure totalling €166.6 million and allows for increased service levels across a range of depart-ments and services.

The budget includes a reduc-

tion of the maximum 15 per cent allowable to the basic rate of Lo-cal Property Tax in 2016 – reduc-ing the average liability from €675 to €573.75, a saving of €101.25 per property.

There is no increase in the level of commercial rates.

There is an increase of €250,000 for housing mainte-nance contracts, which will be used mainly to fund an annual boiler replacement programme.

More than €2 million in extra funding is being made available for the Homeless Service budget and it is expected that 60 per cent of this will be matched with an increase in central Government funding.

A total of €312,500 in addi-tional funding will be provided

for road and footpath restoration and improvement works.

Also, in addition to the con-tinuation of the Business Support Grants, Shop Front Grants and the Vacant Premises incentive scheme, an additional €195,000 has been provided to fund ini-tiatives and events designed to increase footfall in commercial areas countywide.

“The council prides itself on the quality of its public realm and the cultural and recreational facilities we provide for our residents, busi-nesses and visitors,” the council stated. “For the first time in a number of years, Budget 2016 al-lows for increased expenditure in this area.”

This will include an increase of €462,500 in the maintenance

budget for flagship parks and open spaces; €120,000 additional funding for the maintenance of playgrounds and playing pitches and the provision of funding for a small number of additional staff required to ensure the maxi-mum potential of dlr LexIcon is achieved.

The cathaoirleach Cllr Barry Saul welcomed the 2016 Budget as it was agreed by the council.

“I am particularly pleased that we were able to hold rates at their existing levels while also increas-ing front line services,” he said. “I am also happy that the citizens of the county benefitted from the 15 per cent reduction in property tax.

“The adoption of the budget reflects the council’s commit-

ment to shaping and promoting a smart, vibrant county which is at-tractive, inclusive and accessible to all.”

Meanwhile, South Dublin Coun-ty Council has adopted its annual budget of €225 million for 2016 with a strong focus on housing supply, enhanced service deliv-ery, tourism and heritage, and economic and community devel-opment.

Chief Executive, Daniel McLoughlin, informed the elect-ed members that the council’s revenue budget will involve ex-penditure in the region of €225.45 million for the year ahead which represents an increase of €6 mil-lion on last year.

“Housing supply, economic development including tourism

and aesthetics, enhanced service delivery, and business support are central to the achievement of these objectives,” he said. “All of these principles are supported through the financial provisions in this budget”.

The homeless budget has been increased by 50 per cent to €2.389m, which is a three-fold increase on the 2014 provision of €794,000.

Housing maintenance is set at €300,000 while footpath mainte-nance is at €100,000.

A total of €200,000 will fa-cilitate the implementation of the recently adopted litter manage-ment plans with initiatives such as additional bins, CCTV, audio messaging, anti-dog fouling and graffiti removal.

THE Lord Mayor of Dublin, Cllr Críona Ní Dhálaigh, was on the Southside recently where she unveiled a plaque to of-ficially mark the completion of the restoration of the pond and water feature in Palmer-ston Park.

The Dublin 6 park is consid-ered a fine example of a late Victorian municipal park that is surrounded by red brick Victo-rian villas that add to the archi-tectural character of the park.

It was designed in 1891 by renowned landscape architect William Sheppard, and it still retains this layout today.

The park contains many ma-ture deciduous and evergreen trees dating from the original 1891 planting. The pond, water-fall and rockery are impressive and a unique feature of this park.

Lord Mayor Ní Dhálaigh praised the work behind the newly restored pond.

“I congratulate all involved in this project which brings renewed life and interest to Palmerston Park,” she said. “I am heartened to see that this wonderful historic city park is being conserved and enhanced, ensuring a beautiful vibrant setting, not only for the local

residents but for all visitors to this area.”

Dublin City Council Park Su-perintendent Leslie Moore, added: “The restoration of the water feature within Palmer-ston Park has been well re-ceived by the local community and visitors alike.

“This park is a fine example of Dublin City Council’s ongoing programme of enhancement

and restoration of our historic parks.

“Many challenges lie ahead including maintaining a high level of service to the many visitors to our city parks but there are also many exciting new possibilities.”

Palmerston Park is located in Dartry and close to Rath-mines village. The area once formed part of the demesne of Rathmines Castle, which dates from the sixteenth century.

The Battle of Rathmines was fought in the vicinity of the castle between Royalist and

Commonwealth troops during the seventeenth century.

The castle was removed in the mid-nineteenth century when the area was laid out with fine red brick villas. These buildings exist today as fine ex-amples of Victorian residential architecture.

The Palmerston Park resto-ration work was project man-aged by Michael Noonan, Dub-lin City Council Park Services. The civil and engineering works were designed by Fergal McNa-mara, Howley Hayes Architects design team. The restoration

work was implemented by Eu-gene Tools of Westside Civil En-gineering. The planting of the rockery was designed and im-plemented by Parks Services, including Dublin City Council gardening staff Ross Styles and Patrick Considine.

The works included carry-ing out repairs to the waterfall structure, waterproofing the pond, restoration of the stone-work around the pond, install-ing a water circulation pump and associated electrics, clear-ing overgrown vegetation and replanting the rockery.

Ireland stars tip-off on new hockey pitchNeil Fetherstonhaugh

IRELAND’S national hockey teams were among the partici-pants at a festival of hockey to mark the official opening of a new world-class hockey facility on the Rathdown School cam-pus in Glenageary.

A joint initiative between Rath-down School and Monkstown Hockey Club, the Merrion Fleet Arena is a water-based pitch that incorporates a Greenfields carpet as used at the 2014 Hockey World Cup in Holland, Musco lighting and a 175-seat viewing stand.

Members of the hockey and lo-cal communities gathered for the event, with both Ireland’s men’s and women’s hockey teams tak-ing to the pitch to celebrate the occasion.

Speaking at the opening cer-emony, which was officiated by broadcaster and local resident Pat Kenny, Patsy Ashe, Chairper-son, Rathdown School Board of Governors, said: “We are delight-

ed to see this ambitious project come to fruition.

“Building on the success of both our senior and junior hockey teams in recent years, we hope that the new facility will support the development and growth of hockey at Rathdown to the high-

est possible level. It will ensure that the girls have every oppor-tunity to participate on a regular basis, to reach their full potential and ultimately to develop a sport for life.”

Trevor Watkins, President of Monkstown Hockey Club, added:

“This is a milestone for our club, as it has allowed us reduce our waiting lists for girls and boys, increase the number of sen-ior teams and provides a great venue for EY Irish Hockey league matches.”

In conjunction with its use by

Rathdown and Monkstown Hock-ey Club, the new facility will be utilised by a number of local pri-mary schools, as well as for hock-ey camps and training camps for representative teams.

Rathdown and Monkstown Hockey Club were successful in their joint application for a Sports Capital Grant for the project from the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport. Monkstown Hockey Club, supported by the Leinster Hockey Association, also made a capital contribution.

Addressing guests at the event, Deputy Mary Mitchell O’Connor

(FG), said: “Participating in sport is vital to all our health. Hockey is played from age seven to 70 and we are delighted to help so many, especially girls and boys, get the opportunity to play this sport.”

Rathdown Sport is sponsored by independent fleet manage-ment company Merrion Fleet Management and the new facil-ity is known as the ‘Merrion Fleet Arena’. Speaking at the launch, Sarah Dunn, Founding Director at Merrion Fleet Management said: “We are delighted to help the girls of Rathdown participate in and excel in sport.”

Dunphy kicks off campaign BROADCASTER Eamon Dun-phy joined Dail depuites Shane Ross, Finian McGrath and John Halligan at the launch of the Independent Alliance’s latest candidate for the forthcoming general election, Carol Hunt.

Ms Hunt will be running in the Dun Laoghaire Constituency.

Speaking at the launch, Mr Dun-phy praised Ms Hunt’s courage in entering the political arena.

He referred to her articles in the Sunday Independent and hailed their forthright, fearless ap-proaches to the issues of the day. The football pundit promised that he would canvass for Carol and other candidates standing under the Independent Alliance banner.

Carol Hunt is a journalist, broad-caster, equality and social justice campaigner, mother and wife. For the past 10 years, she’s written a column for the Sunday Independ-ent on topics ranging from debt and mental health to equality and social justice. She also writes for the Irish Independent and Herald

and is a regular panellist on radio and TV.

Local residents joined with TDs and members of the literati, in-cluding Marian Keyes and Roisin Ingle in Cafe du Journal, Monks-town, to kickstart Carol’s General Election campaign.

Auction prizes included Marian Keyes naming a character in her next novel after the winner, which resulted in some vigorous bid-ding. Carol firmly believes that if you don’t like the political system, get involved and change it. “As a social commentator, I have spent

years lamenting the lack of strong women in politics,” she said. “With that in mind, I decided to take my own advice and jump in.”

Independent Alliance TD Shane Ross also spoke on the night.

“We are absolutely delighted that Carol has decided to run for the next Dáil as an Independent Alliance candidate,” he said. “She has bottle to burn with the courage of her convictions. She will bring a fresh approach to the Dail as she is not a hardened politician but an ambitious independent with radi-cal ideas and firm convictions.”

Deputy Shane Ross, John Halligan, Carol Hunt, Eamon Dunphy and Finian McGrath are pictured at the campaign launch.▪

the most visited in Europe. The park surrounding the market is one of the highlights of the

festive season, with its trees decorated with themed lights shaped like hearts or gingerbread men.

The market itself has a central row of stalls selling hand-crafted decorations and arty bits and pieces, as well as deliciously scented natural beeswax candles.

An added attraction is that throughout December, choirs from around the world perform in the Festival Hall at weekends which is sure to get you into the Christmas spirit.

Prague Christmas markets

The city of Prague loves the festive season and from early Decem-ber a number of cultural events, folk displays, concerts and plays take place in the Czech capital. Its Christmas markets are fairly low-key and family friendly with several dotted around the town - the biggest being held on the busy Old Town Square. The idyllic Baroque setting of the cobbled square seems perfectly suited to a quaint seasonal market, helped along by the generous layer of snow that visitors should expect at this time of year.

The rows of colourfully decorated wooden huts stock some attrac-tive handmade stocking fillers, including the locally produced wood-carved puppets, jewellery, toys and candles.

There is a central stage which hosts daily carol singers and bands playing seasonal tunes to keep everyone entertained.

Probably one of the best-known Christmas markets in Europe with almost 200 stalls crammed into the cobbled square on the slope beneath the Frauenkirche, this is certainly worth a visit.

Dating back to 1628, the Nuremberg Christmas Market is known as a regional centre for trading handmade wood figurines.

It has a rather odd tradition: every two years a new ‘Christ child’ is appointed; a young man or woman who opens the market and rushes around town spreading Christmas cheer, dressed in elaborate gold and white and sporting a large golden crown.

Eccentric traditions aside, the market is best known for its food, which includes several stalls selling steaming Glühwein and grilled Nürnberger Bratwurst, delicious thin and spicy sausages.

Another favourite is the local Lebkuchen or gingerbread, which is sticky and sweet with honey. In the evening, the market is softly lit with hundreds of tiny lights and bands arrive to entertain everyone with anything from brass to live jazz.

Guide to Europe’s best Christmas marketsEdel Rooney

What better way to get into the Christmas spirit than by leaving the hustle and bustle behind you to visit a real traditional and romantic Christmas market?

The appeal of a romantic Christmas market is stress-free shopping in a traditional, festive environment with a few mugs of mulled wine to help you along your way.

The gifts available are not mass produced but rather crafts of real quality and the atmosphere is invariably enchanting.

Here are a few of Europe’s best.

In a city famous for its cuisine, the Brussels Christmas Market is a good choice for foodies. The market takes over the Grand Place, Brussels’ commercial hub, famous for the lavishly carved facades of its guild houses.

Strings of lights cascade down from the centre over the little chalet-style wooden huts which cluster around the square, each representing a different European country.

Be sure to work up an appetite before you go, though, as there are plenty of food stalls with mountains of Belgian chocolates, steaming plates of moules, jars of preserved fruits and gingerbread on offer.

With carols filtered through loudspeakers, jugglers, street musi-cians and painters braving the cold to entertain the crowds, this market is a real gastronomic affair.

The 13 county Irish tour in-cludes some great venues around the country which she missed out on this year.

Following the launch of her au-tobiography ‘Down the Crooked Road’ and the ‘Soundtrack’ CD and due to popular demand, Mary has finalised the dates and venues for another tour which extends to the four corners of the country and sees her doing what she loves most – performing to a live audience.

She performs at some of her favourite home venues, including Vicar Street on Saturday, January 16 and tickets are now on sale lo-

cally from the venue as well as on Ticketmaster.

Mary Black and her band know every inch of the Vicar Street ven-ue and performed there twice on their last tour. They’ve described it as “a magical venue” and can’t wait to play to their home fans at the award-winning Dublin hub.

“The gigs earlier this year were such a resounding success and the feedback was so positive that we jumped at the opportunity to play there again in January,”

Mary said. “The tour at the start of this

year was great fun and the re-action was simply incredible,” Mary explained. “I can’t wait to get back out on the road with the band, and get on stage singing the songs that people love and want to sing with me. Dogs TrusT Canine Column

Training your dog to come to you

Corina Fitzsimons

HoPeFullY after a week of practicing the training advice in last week’s column, your dog appears enthusiastically each time you call him and you are ready to move on to the next step.

Stage 3 – Trying recall outside in public places. Make it easy for yourself and your dog by finding an area that is as quiet as pos-sible. If other dogs are running around it will be very hard for your dog to concentrate.

It is really important that your dog gets the command right every time at this point and then you can slowly build up to higher

levels of distractions - but only as long as your dog keeps get-ting it right.

Keep your dog on a long line lead so that he cannot get away or out of sight.

Let him go to the end of the lead and enjoy sniffing around. When you are ready, call him to you and wait. Do not pull him to you - he must come to you out of choice. When he does, give him his reward, praise, then “good dog – off you go!” and let him go off sniffing again.

Repeat this several times dur-ing his walk so he learns that coming to you will not automati-cally mean it is the end of his walk.

You will need to do this for about two weeks and, if possible, in different locations – the park, a friend’s garden, a different park from usual etc.

This will help your dog to learn

to come to you wherever you are in the future, otherwise he may assume that he only has to come in the one place that you’ve done the training with him.

Never tell your dog off if he doesn’t come to you on command. If your dog thinks that you are going to punish him when he does eventually come to you, he won’t want to come to you at all.

Always praise him for com-ing to you, no matter how long it has taken him.

Stage 4 - When your dog is coming to you each time he is called on the long line, you can try letting go of the lead com-pletely but keep it attached to his harness (just in case).

The first time that you do this, try to make sure that it is in a quiet area so that he doesn’t completely forget his training at the first sight of another dog.

Again, build up the level of distractions slowly so that you can make sure he sticks to his training.

Let him have a little play with other dogs if he is friend-ly with them. Call him back after a few minutes; he should come to you if you have trained him well.

Once you are confident he knows his recall command, you can start to gradually re-duce the treats.

Small animals need the companyof their own speciesAs a general rule, small animals should only ever be kept with members of the same species – as a pair at the least. Groups are even better in the case of many animals, such as rabbits and guinea pigs. This makes the animals feel safer, they can play together, clean each other and satisfy their social needs. Only hamsters prefer to live alone. Incidentally, you shouldn’t mix different animals: these are no substitute for members of the same species, and the animals do not get along since they communicate very differently. For example, rabbits and guinea pigs that are forced to share a home will keep out of each other’s way as much as possible. If this is not possible, they try to cope with the situation – but both species are under permanent stress.

More support for Movember

Allergen tool to help food businessesA NEW online and mobile com-patible tool has been developed by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) to assist Ireland’s 22,000 food service businesses identify and manage allergens in the food they serve.

The easy-to-use facility was launched last week by Minister for Health Leo Varadkar.

It aims to help food businesses comply with their legal require-ments to display allergen informa-tion on food so that consumers can make more informed choices about the food they purchase.

The tool is an additional applica-tion as part of the FSAI’s MenuCal calorie calculator, which is avail-able free-of-charge.

MenuCal enables food service businesses to calculate calorie val-ues in the food they serve to cus-tomers.

The legal requirement to display allergen information applies to all food businesses, including restau-rants, pubs, takeaways, contract caterers, food stalls, as well as busi-nesses offering delivery services.

The sinus cavities are in direct communication with the nasal airways;therefore what affects one may affect the other.

there are four groups of sinuses: A. Frontal - Paired, in frontal bone. B. Maxillary - Paired, in maxilla. Related to tooth-bearing area of maxilla. C. Ethmoid - D. Sphenoid - paired in the sphenoid bone. The bones of the face and skull have small but definite movement. These movements are essential for good function anddrainage of the sinuses. If there is restriction in these movements then sinuses can become blocked by the fluid they produce, and or dust particles, etc. Anyone who has had a sinus headache knows how thisfeels. The sinus drainage also involves structures in the throat, the upperribs and the upper part of the chest. Again freedom of movement here isvital for the integrity of the sinuses. Traumas to any or all of the abovestructures may cause impairment or lack of function to the sinus pumpsand drainage mechanisms. Osteopathic treatment with regards toblocked or inflamed sinuses is very gentle and soothing. It involves insuring mobility of the structures involved in sinus drainage, and gentlemovements to the bones surrounding the sinuses. In cases where there isno permanent damage to the sinus mechanism osteopathic treatmentcan be very successful.

The 9th Annual EnviroCom Awards saw 10 businesses recognised as winners for taking significant steps to save water, conserve energy, prevent waste and enrich both the environmental and social fabric of their local communities. In many cases, the entries showed that businesses can protect our environment and save money, making them more competitive in a challenging economy.

Speaking at the Awards, An Cathaoirleach Barry Saul said “Since the EnviroCom Awards were launched in 2007 they have showcased businesses of all sectors and sizes who take ownership of meeting the challenges of their environmental responsibilities, rather than waiting for the impact of punitive legislation to force them to do so. Dún Laoghaire- Rathdown County Council is delighted to be associated with honouring their leadership in setting the standard for excellence in environmental management and innovation in the county. “

SOS Cleaning Services won the award for the best example of Water Conservation having saved over a million litres of water per year by introducing a pulse mopping kit which doesn’t require buckets of water while cleaning. Instead, the reusable micro fibre cloth mops contain a reservoir of cleaning solution which cleans a larger floor area, using 96% less water resulting in shorter drying times giving improved safety while eliminating the need to dump cleaning chemicals in foul water drains.

Foxrock Golf Club won the award in the energy management category. Ivan Sproule, Business Programme Manager with the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland, the lead judge in this category was impressed at how the Club involved all its members in their decisions about energy saving improvements. The projects included installing LED lighting, high efficiency boilers, zoned and thermostat controlled heating and energy saving food and beverage coolers that improved comfort levels and improved energy efficiency by 40%.

Dun & Bradstreet, which employs 220 staff in its Sandyford branch, won the award for a large company engaging communities in environmental projects. “We found the company encouraged a lot of interaction between the workplace and the wider community in terms of environmental education as part

of its “Go Green Programme said lead category judge Kieran Carberry of the HSE.

The Radisson Blu St Helen’s Hotel has a strong environmental ethos and has held the Gold Award for the Green Hospitality Awards programme since 2007. Lead judge, for this category Keiron Phillips of the Environmental Protection Agency said “It was obvious when looking around the hotel that environmental issues were taken seriously from the top down and the bottom up. Their on-going performance monitoring forms the basis for annual environmental benchmark reporting and ensuring that targets are set and there is a process for continuous improvement. ”

TechWorks Marine won the micro-enterprise award this year for organisations with less than 10 employees. Lead judge, Jean Clarke, Department of Environment, Community and Local Government, said, “We were very impressed that such a small company could obtain a niche position in the provision of state of the art oceanographic monitoring products.” Their products are used by government agencies, public utilities, businesses and marine research institutes in the management of water quality, ecosystem conservation and the development of renewable energy such as wave, tidal, solar and wind.” TechWorks Marine work with the European Space Agency to integrate their products with data and imagery collected by satellite.

Everyone involved in the Envirocom Aawards recognises that the ultimate winners are the people of Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown who benefit from having a better environment to live and work in.

The Awards are organised by the Dun Laoghaire Rathdown Chamber of Commerce and supported by the Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council. Sponsors include Amgen, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland, WEEE Ireland, The Royal Marine Hotel and ESB ecars.

AUSTRALIAN author John Tully’s third novel ‘Robbed of Every Blessing’ tells the story of a Tipperary farmer

called Maurice O’Dwyer, who is transported to Van Diemen’s Land for conspiracy against the British Crown.

O’Dwyer is fictional, but his story was common enough in early 19th century Ireland in the years before and after the Napoleonic Wars, when peasants banded together to hit back at their masters.

The idea of a novel about transportation came to Tully one night as he was listening to a recording of Christy Moore singing the ballad ‘I Wish I Was Back Home In Derry’, which tells of Irish prisoners exiled to the remote penal colony of Van Diemen’s Land - a place where “the gun makes the law and the climate is raw”.

Tully realised that with his intimate knowledge of the Tasmanian bush

that he could build on those words. The book tells of O’Dwyer’s

arrest at his parents’ house; his trial before the ferocious hanging judge ‘Puffendorf’ (who did exist); the endless misery of

the sea voyage in chains to Van Diemen’s Land; and his assignment

as a farm labourer to property in the Derwent Valley north of Hobart.

In a refinement of cruelty, the judge also sentenced his simpleton brother, Padraig, to transportation for breaking the curfew.

This was the time of the Black War, in which the indigenous people of Van Diemen’s Land were resisting the occupation of their domains by the invading British in an unequal struggle.

O’Dwyer, a self-taught man, a supporter of the French Revolution and freedom for Ireland, is sympathetic to

the plight of the Aborigines. When he finds an injured Aboriginal child

in the nearby forest, he nurses him back to health.

At this stage, blessed with a humane overseer, it seems that exile might be

bearable, even if it is unlikely that O’Dwyer will ever see his

parents or his fiancée back in Ireland again.

Things take a turn for the worse when the overseer leaves to take up a farm near Sydney. He is replaced with a depraved and incompetent individual who was earlier cashiered from the army for some dreadful but unspecified crime.

Provoked beyond endurance by the man’s viciousness and viewed with suspicion by the British authorities, O’Dwyer retaliates and finds himself in double exile, with no hope of escape from the island, hunted as a bushranger by the Redcoats, and his brother murdered in the forest. He is taken

in by the local Lairmairrener people, who have not forgotten his earlier kindness to their child.

Facing overwhelming force—and the personal hatred of an obsessive British officer—things are bleak for O’Dwyer and his black lover, Kiuntah. Tully tells the story from multiple points of view—including that of the soldiers and gaolers—and thus avoids a simplistic, “goodies” and “baddies” approach.

He even has a good word for O’Dwyer’s ascendancy landlord. Tully’s sympathies lie with the victims of the oppressive imperial system, whether these are Irish peasants, the Lairmairrener

people, or the English poor pressed into military service.

BOOKOf THE

WEEK

ABOUT THE AUTHORJOHN Tully is Honorary Pro-fessor at Victoria University in Melbourne where, until his retirement, he taught History and Politics.

He has written three nov-els and six historical books. His latest non-fiction book, ‘Crooked Deals and Broken Treaties’, relates the story of American Indian displacement in Ohio’s Cuyahoga Valley. He grew up in the central high-lands of Tasmania—the for-mer Van Diemen’s Land—and although he loves the place dearly, he is all too aware of the dark shadows of the past hanging over it. He is married and has three chil-dren, two grandchil-dren, and “the world’s most beau-tiful Golden Retriever”.

Stove and fireplace design and safety in the home - you can trust the expertsBrian Gresak

Awell designed stove or fireplace will be a pleasure right from the start.

We recommend that your home is visited by a competent independent professional to examine the property, undertake practical tests and produce a unique design specification for you - preferably in writing. This takes a minimum of one and a half hours to do properly, so if anyone just pops in, shines a torch up the chimney, or provides conclusive opinion in the showroom without even seeing the property, be wary! The best time to do this is before any installation takes place.

What is involved and what should be considered? The first is the design/specification, the second the installation – and the third the ongoing operation of the stove. Stage 2 and 3 are equally important, but in this article we will only focus on the first Design and Specification stage.

(Please feel free to come to any of the weekly seminars where all is discussed and any questions you may have about your own unique situation can be dealt with – see below for details)

Stage 1 - Design and Specification – a brief overview:

There are three aspects to consider. These are; the Chimney, the Stove – and the Room or area to be heated. They could perhaps be thought of as The Lungs, The Heart (Hearth) and The Body respectively.

The LungS - (Chimney)The chimney needs to be

checked to see if it is suitable – regardless of whether a flexible flue liner is to be installed. For example: If you don’t need a flexible flue liner – and you may or may not – you can save a lot of money. If, on the other hand, you do need one, it could be dangerous and costly not to do so.

The chimney aspect of the survey, depending on the specifics, may include visual inspections

both external and internal, draw and pressure testing and/or other smoke tests - and height and clearance assessments. The chimney or flue must be compatible with the capacity and type of stove. This takes us to the ‘heart’ of the matter…

The heArT - (Hearth)Imagine the lungs of a mouse

trying to serve the heart and body of an elephant, or vice versa? – Of course this would not work. In the same way, the chimney must suit the stove and the stove must be appropriate to the room. There are always quite a few options. It’s probably best to consider all of them before automatically pre-determining a solution.

Let’s say, for example you wanted to install a free standing stove. But when the survey is done, the space or recess is found to be too small for the correct size of chamber. You decide to proceed with a suitable cassette stove instead - which in your case is also safer. Also, you save on the overall costs: (Yes the cost of the cassette stove itself is a bit more than the free standing stove you

were thinking of, but the survey has indicated that you won’t need a liner – a big saving – and you have saved the costs of having to rebuild a chamber as well.) It fits in well and there is more space in the room for the furniture. You are happy…

It is important that all distances to combustible materials are carefully considered. The average stove can be many times hotter than an open fireplace so in almost all cases a wooden surround is a no-no with a stove. (It is possible in certain cases to retain the timber surround by including a heat shield)

And the use of plasterboard within the combustible distance is not feasible, nor is heat resistant plasterboard (the pink one). For example, a one hour fire rating for heat resistant material means that in an hour it is possible for the material to burn. If you have an installation with any combustible material anywhere near the stove, visible or non-visible, including fire resistant plasterboard, this should be removed.

The BoDy - (Room / House Space)

The space (or spaces) to be heated is the final objective of all of the above. If you have had the above (‘Lungs’ and ‘Hearth’) properly planned, then this is the fun part which we can get to in a moment.

Two of the items on the checklist for safety worth highlighting are - ventilation and the carbon monoxide alarms. Ventilation is essential because the air supply is the ‘other fuel that burns’. Its provision and location can affect the performance of the whole heating system and should be carefully designed to suit each individual project. The same goes for the alarms which are needed not only for the room in which the fire is operating, but also in the sleeping area of the home.

Today, more and more homes are open plan design. There are opportunities at the design stage to incorporate integrating features, for example; making a feature of the fireplace surround by cladding it in specially chosen

granite. You can further enhance your home by combining finishes to match, for example; having the kitchen counter tops in a similar material to the fireplace surround – or at a construction stage including internal window sills which match. These can also easily be added over existing sills without causing any dust or disturbance if carefully measured. . (Special safety requirements for stoves in an open plan solution – explained further at seminars – see below).

Why not think outside the box. Come along with your ideas and let’s make some magic together. What have we got to lose?

Brian gresak (sfs.ie) has qualifications in Architecture,

Solid Fuel Installation – and Health and Safety in Construction. For further

Peugeot 308 gt delivers both performance and style

Exclusive new direction indica-tors further distinguish the 308 GT from other models.

Inside the car’s cabin, both the roof lining and upper window pil-lars are finished in anthracite. Red stitching on the upholstery trim is also found on the dash-board, door panels, gear lever gaiter and floor mats.

Aluminium detailing on the pedals and stainless steel sill fin-ishers in the door apertures, add the finishing touch.

The signature Peugeot com-pact steering wheel is finished in a perforated leather trim and carries the GT badge.

The instrument panel bears a new chequered flag motif back-ground and switching on the ignition produces a GT welcome message.

The large touchscreen col-our scheme is a sporty red and

Available in hatchback and SW body styles, both GT models offer assertive new styling, out-standing petrol and diesel per-formance-oriented engines and bespoke chassis modifications. The result is an exceptional on-the-road experience that will de-light even the most enthusiastic drivers.

The new Peugeot 308 GT re-tains all the elements which have made the 308 range a commer-cial hit throughout Europe - strik-ing exterior design, innovative Peugeot i-Cockpit cabin, versatile interior and high perceived qual-ity.

However, the 308 GT’s en-hanced design quality is immedi-

ately obvious, clearly embodying Peugeot’s continued move up-market.

Exterior-wise, the iconic Peu-geot Lion emblem has moved from the bonnet to the front grille, mirroring the new Peugeot 508.

It sits on 18” Diamant wheels, shod with Michelin Pilot Sport 3 tyres.

At the rear, the 308 GT offers a striking and distinctive posture, with a lacquered black diffuser and stylish twin exhaust pipes.

The GT signature is integrated into the tailgate, as well as the front grille and wheel arches. Top-of-the-range headlights made up of 62 LEDs have been fitted.

THE showroom success enjoyed by the award-winning Peugeot 308, European Car of the Year 2014 and Continental Irish Com-pact Car of the Year 2015, looks set to reach even greater heights with the dynamic new flagship – the stunning 308 GT.

The new Peugeot 308▪

ard on every 308 GT, includes an amplified, sporty engine noise, firmer and more responsive pow-er steering, more responsive ac-celerator pedal mapping.

There is also a more responsive automatic gearbox with steering wheel-mounted paddles.

The instrument panel displays power and torque delivered, turbo pressure, longitudinal and transverse acceleration.

The driver can also choose to turn off the Driver Sport Pack setting for a more comfort-ori-entated drive, simply by pressing an easily located button that is positioned on the console in the centre of the car.

seats, Parktronic parking assist, satellite navigation, intelligent light system, metallic paint and mirror pack. For the GLE Coupe 350d version, price begins from €86,805 (ex works) included in which is the full range of features offered in the 250d with the addi-tion of a reversing camera.

Launched in a year when Mer-cedes-Benz celebrates 30 years of their 4-Matic four-wheel-drive system, the new GLE sees a con-tinuation of what Ciaran Allen says is ‘policy on the part of Mer-cedes-Benz to win over new cus-tomers by matching lower prices to higher specifications in a way that delivers added value where it counts most – in the wallet.

To emphasise the point, Mer-cedes-Benz will pitch the new GLE and GLE Coupe at the market un-der their recently introduced Star Finance personal contract plan.

MERCEDES-Benz has released details of price and specifica-tions in relation to their new GLE and GLE Coupe models, both of which will shortly ar-rive here in volume ahead of the January registrations rush.

In line with what is becoming normal practice as Mercedes-Benz accelerates efforts to at-tract new customers and boost market share, the new GLE (which replaces the popular M-Class) will come on the market here at prices comparatively lower than its predecessor and with a level of standard specifications well in excess of what was offered previ-ously.

Like its predecessor, the ro-bustly stylish GLE is aimed at what Mercedes-Benz says is ‘the go-where-you-please motorist

who seeks premium class trans-port that is equally at home, on or off-road’. By contrast, the class-creating GLE Coupe - which Mercedes-Benz believes will be the trailblazer for another new model segment - is a four-door coupe whose sweeping lines belie its muscular, off-road capability.

In Ireland, emphasis is being placed on two models, both die-sel powered and both with au-tomatic transmission - the GLE 250d and GLE Coupe 350d.

For the GLE 250d, price begins from €65,665 (ex works) with an-nual road tax from €280, reflect-ing an 8% price decrease for the new 2WD model. Included within the package will be a range of standard features that Mercedes-Benz sales manager Ciaran Allen values at €12,508.

These include full leather up-holstery and trim, heated front

Marty Moore backs a winnerIRELAND International and Leinster rugby player, Mar-tin Moore, has renewed his partnership with Volkswa-gen Commercial Vehicles as brand ambassador for their award winning pickup, the Volkswagen Amarok.

The Amarok is a class lead-ing 4x4 pick up utility vehicle that has been winning awards and ahead of the competition since it was launched three years ago.

Marty said: “I am delighted to continue my relationship with Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles acting as brand am-bassador for the Amarok.

“I’ve just taken delivery of a specially commissioned ‘Amarok Black’ which a really amazing 4x4 lifestyle and util-ity vehicle.”

The Amarok is available with entry and highline trims. The highline trim provides additional comfort with alloys, leather multi-function steering wheel, fog-lights, bluetooth

and climatronic air condition-ing included.

All models are four-wheel drive and engine sizes vary between 140hp to 180hp with the 180hp engine also avail-able in a highly fuel efficient 8 speed automatic.

The Amarok is also currently available with Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles unbeat-able 0 per cent finance.

According to Alan Bateson,

Managing Director, Volkswa-gen Commercial Vehicles, Marty and the award winning Amarok are the perfect fit.

“As the Amarok goes from strength to strength, not only in Ireland but globally, we believe Marty will also.”

Moore made his senior debut in September 2012 and lined out for Ireland in the 2014 Six Nations Champion-ship win against Scotland.

Marty Moore, Leinster and Ireland, receives the keys to his new 2015 Amarok Black from Alan Bateson, Managing Director, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Ireland.

Latest Honda models receive safety ratingTHE all-new HR-V and Jazz are the latest models in Honda’s line-up to receive the maximum safety rating by independent safety organisation Euro NCAP. Under the new testing regula-tions for 2015, both models achieved a full 5-star rating re-flecting Honda’s commitment to overall vehicle safety.

The 5-star result for Jazz means it is only the second supermini to achieve a 5-star rating so far this year. Both Jazz and HR-V feature Honda’s City-Brake Active system (CTBA) fitted as standard across the range. By using laser technol-ogy, the CTBA system scans the road ahead and automatically applies the brakes if a low speed collision is likely.

All models of HR-V and Jazz, with the exception of the entry level models, also feature Hon-

da’s ‘Dynamic Safety Pack’, a suite of active-safety technolo-gies including: Forward Collision Warning, Traffic Sign Recognition System, Intelligent Speed Lim-iter, Lane Departure Warning and High-beam Support System.

The all-new Jazz and new HR-V

join the existing 5-star rated mod-els in Honda’s line-up, including the Civic and CR-V, meaning that all Honda models now on sale in Ireland carry a 5 star rating.

The Euro NCAP rating scheme focuses on the vehicle’s overall safety performance which gives

consumers an easy to understand single score.

The rating considers various aspects of vehicle safety, such as occupant protection, child pro-tection, pedestrian protection and the availability and effective-ness of driver aids.

How colours make us feelThis colour psychology guide will help choose a scheme to suit your family’s moods and personalities.

• Orange: Can increase appe-tite, give good feelings of self

worth and creativity and is an excellent anti-depressant.

• Yellow: A colour associated with intellect, wisdom and knowledge. In fact, it can stimulate metal clarity. Also said to induce argumentative

behaviour.• Brown: Used carefully it can

be a soft, calm neutral that works well with other neutrals. Has association with drabness and dullness, but offset with bright colours it can be inspir-ing.

• Navy: Has associations with being in control. Think of typi-cal uniform colours. Reliable and safe, it can be an easy col-our to work with.

• Turquoise: Can be a sooth-ing colour to look at. Not a good colour to induce appe-tite, which might not be a bad thing.

• Green: An obvious association with nature makes it an excel-lent calming colour that can soothe headaches and calm nerves.

• Blue: Inspiring and inventive,

blue can also inspire calm. It also has strong associations with dependency.

• Violet: Can be seen as a femi-nine colour although it also in-spires a regal atmosphere. It’s also seen as a spiritual colour with a sense of kindness and justice.

• Black: Using a lot of black is

said to create a barrier, cre-ating separation. Black ab-sorbs all colour so must be used carefully within an inte-rior.

• White: Evokes calmness, hy-giene, pureness and perfec-tion. It’s a great background to other colours in the spectrum. However, it also shows a lot of

dirt and is high maintenance.• Red: With its positive asso-

ciations, red can help with tiredness, self-confidence, coldness, poor circulation and weak concentration. Red is associated with courage and strength but also with the negative aspects of aggression and danger.

Flat pack frustration can take the good out of buying furniture▪

Making self-assembly easyIT LOOKS really great in the catalogue and you’re lured into a sense of false security by the easy-to-assemble promise. But once you get it home you often find that self-assembly furni-ture seems as complicated as a Rubik cube.

However, there’s a method to everything and by taking a deep breath and a dose of patience, anyone can put together self-as-sembly furniture.

First, check to make sure the unit you have purchased is the right model and colour and will fit the position you have planned for it

Open the packaging and en-sure all the parts are in good con-dition and that all the fittings are present.

Don’t rush the job. Study the as-sembly instructions carefully and follow them closely. Don’t skip any stages. If along the way you aren’t sure of an instruction ask

a friend or relative for help. When you are immersed in a project it’s easy to overlook or misinterpret one of the steps. If possible, as-semble the furniture in the room in which it is to be located

Ensure you have the correct tools to complete the job such as a hammer, screwdriver, measur-ing tape etc. Don’t even try if you don’t have the right equipment.

If you have purchased a unit containing drawers it’s usually a good idea to assemble them

first which will allow them to set while you work on the rest of the unit.

If you are fitting a backboard to the piece of furniture, ensure that it is fitted squarely.

It will generally not be neces-sary to drill holes in the furniture as units are pre-drilled.

When positioning the unit, al-ways lift it into position as pulling or pushing it along the floor cov-ering may cause damage to the unit itself or to the floor.

Avoid complacency after nailing the jobCormac Spencer

HAVING nailed the interview, and accepted an offer to start your new job, you breathe a sigh of relief and relax.

It’s all downhill from here isn’t it? Not quite. While signing your new contract might be pleasing, your new job isn’t something guaranteed for life.

For a start, most jobs require

a six-month probation period to assess whether your work performance matches your per-formance in interview.

For an employee this time is important in making sure the probation is a mere formality, and that the job is secured for however long it’s wanted.

Starting a new job provides the opportunity to institute yourself as a valuable member of the team.

First impressions are impor-tant and you only get to make one. Good first impressions allow you to establish yourself as someone recognised as smart, motivated, and possessing the potential to progress.

The chances are that you have never met most of the people you are working with, so you have a clean slate with which to make your mark.

For the first few weeks of a new job, co-workers will cut you some slack. They assume you don’t know how everything works, so use this time to ask questions.

Bring a pad and write down answers to make sure it sinks in. A good tip is to hold queries until the end of the day as they are often answered in the normal course of things.

This also stops you butting in with a question every five min-utes and coming across as though you aren’t grasping things.

Familiarise yourself with new systems and work practices, ask pertinent questions, and look for training early on, because whereas people are happy to help when you first join the com-pany, if you are asking what your login to the computer is after two months their patience may begin to wear thin!

It’s important to introduce yourself around in a new or-ganisation. Get to know who does what, and who makes the deci-sions. Knowing the key players allows you to do your job better. Try to avoid getting sucked in to gossip about co-workers. Be po-lite to those who are spreading it, but take people as you find them.

This is an opportunity to prog-ress in a new company, so don’t make enemies when you don’t need to.

During the early days of a new job, try to have an input in meet-ings and during work.

Come up with suggestions and insights that mark you out as someone who is sharp, confident and who knows their stuff.

Be careful not to come across as a know-it-all, or to impose yourself too aggressively, and remember not to say things like: “this is not how we used to do things in my old job”.

You aren’t in Kansas now! People are most interested in what works in the here and now and for the future.

Finally, don’t rest on your lau-rels. It should be said, that proba-tion periods are two-way streets (allowing the company to assess you, but also allowing you to see if the job is really what you want), but once you decide you want the job, don’t let your performance drop after you are confirmed as a permanent employee.

Keep contributing and mark yourself out as one to be watched.

A new job is a fresh slate. Be confident. Make yourself invalu-able and you might find opportu-nities present themselves not just for increases in salary, but also for progression.

Over 4,000 new companies formed in month of OctoberA TOTAL of 4,106 new companies and businesses were formed in the month of October, an average of 146 every day.

Over 4,000 new companies and businesses were formed in October.▪

That’s according to the latest figures from Ireland’s leading business and credit risk analyst, Vision-net.ie.

Professional services; whole-sale and retail; and social and personal services were the three industry sectors that saw the highest level of new company start-ups.

New wholesale and retail start-ups increased by 74 per cent to 240 from 138 in the same period last year, while social and personal services start-ups increased by 38 per cent to 171 from 124.

IT and construction compa-nies also received a significant boost in numbers compared to the same period last year, up 36 per cent and 35 per cent respectively.

Dublin, Cork and Limerick were the three most popular centres for new business.

Christine Cullen, managing director of Vision-net.ie, said the company’s figures showed “an encouraging and consistent recovery for the hotel sector.”

“A concerted effort by the Government and tourism bodies to promote Ireland’s status as a holiday destination, have had real positive impacts on the country’s hotel sector,” said Ms Cullen.

“Looking ahead, a recovering national and global economy with increased disposable income will help sustain growth in our hotel and restaurant sector. “This will be particularly important for many businesses outside of Dublin who may have

yet to feel a significant uplift.“More broadly Ireland’s

economic recovery is feeling ever more tangible, with clear numbers demonstrating bur-geoning start-up environments across nearly every sector, and insolvencies dropping overall.”

Ms Cullen added: “A drop in insolvencies in the real estate sector, and a rise in start-up numbers in the wholesale and retail sectors, indicate an increasing propensity to spend and invest in assets.”

Prize Day at the Royal Hibernian Military School in 1916. Major-General Maxwell, the Commander-in-Chief of the Forces in Ireland and the Vice-president of the School, is shown inspecting the boys who are smartly dressed in their uniforms. Following the Easter Rising, Maxwell was responsible for confirming the execution of sixteen of the rebel leaders and also importing martial law. These acts caused public outrage and the effect of the executions was to make martyrs of the rebels.
