a young southside man has launched an online campaign to improve disability access on public transport.

Sean O’Kelly (23), from Dalkey, recently created a Facebook page, ‘A Day in My Wheels’, in a bid to draw attention to the plight he and other disabled people face on a daily basis in the city.

Sean, who has spina bifida and hydrocephalus, is a full-time wheelchair user who relies on public transport, in particular the DART, to get around.

On a recent trip to Clontarf he was left stranded when there was nobody at the station to help him off the DART.

“The journey was fine, but when I got to Clontarf Road Station there was nobody there. The driver helped me off the train and that was okay, as it’s happened before, but when I approached the lift it wasn’t working.”

As a result, Seán was stranded on the platform with no way of getting out of the station. He had to make other arrangements by phoning ahead, boarding another train and getting off at a different stop, where someone had to pick him up.

As a result, he was late for his driving lesson.

This, according to Sean, is a

daily ordeal for those who are disabled and he says he has had enough.

“That was it for me,” he stated.

“This happens in some form or another on every single day in Dublin for people like me and I just felt that I had to do something about it, not just for me but everyone else like me.

“I want to throw down the challenge to others, politicians in particular, to spend a day in a wheelchair to see what it is like.

“Last year we had the marriage referendum to improve equality and now I’d like to see a similar movement for disabled people.

“This really is a matter of

Southsider’s transport nightmare

Cllr Donnelly said she was shocked by Sean’s story.▪

equality, or as is the case, it is a matter of inequality.

“We want to be treated like and considered the same as ordinary citizens but this is impossible with the situation as it is at the moment.”

According to Sean, the opportunity to pass his driving test and drive a car would be a life-changing experience.

However, he has been denied this opportunity in his efforts to be independent because, he says, of the failures in the public transport system.

Sean also highlighted how the problem with a lack of disabled access has affected his personal life as he explained how difficult it is to go on dates with his girlfriend Megan McGuckin (21) who suffers from the same condition.

“It feels like, as disabled people, we are discriminated against,” he added. “It makes me furious. I should be able to go on dates on my own with my girlfriend.

“It’s not right we should have to ring ahead to get the train or go to a restaurant.”

After reading about Sean’s plight, local councillor Deirdre Donnelly (Ind) decided to highlight his story.

“I am quite shocked that citizens are being treated this way in this day and age,” Cllr Donnelly said. “There are thousands of people around the country who have mobility issues and it is so wrong that they are denied their basic

right to travel. “It is unacceptable that a

lift is not working in any of the stations. I have requested a meeting with Department of Transport officials to examine options for passengers who are in wheelchairs or have other mobility difficulties.”

A spokesperson for Iarnród Éireann said they were committed to ensuring all their customers can travel with them.

“We are sorry for any difficulty experienced in travelling with us, as detailed by this customer,” the spokesperson said. “We have invested significantly in fleet and stations to enhance accessibility.

“We also work with representative bodies for the mobility-impaired and sensory-impaired, including the Irish Wheelchair Association, to ensure we can meet the needs of all our customers and address issues which arise.

“We will work to ensure that assistance is available with or without notice.

“However, some stations are unmanned at some times, and notice enables us to ensure that we can have a staff member in place to assist.”

The spokesperson added: “Our Access Liaison Office makes arrangements daily for assistance to be available at stations, including ensuring assistance at times when stations are unmanned.”

Local family helps launch music camp for kidsNeil Fetherstonhaugh

LOCAL Booterstown father and daughter, Tommy and Patri-cia Moylan, met Minister for Health, Simon Harris TD, and well-known jazz singer Honor Heffernan at a launch last week for Ireland’s first ever Euro-pean Youth Exchange summer camp for young people with Williams Syndrome.

Williams Syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that causes multiple development problems. This can include heart problems, narrowed blood vessels, muscu-loskeletal problems, and learn-ing disabilities.

The syndrome is estimated to occur in about one in 20,000 births, and affects approximate-ly 100 families in Ireland.

The camp is organised by the Williams Syndrome Association of Ireland (WSAI) and Trisha Wilkinson from Léargas, the na-tional agency that coordinates funding from the Erasmus + Youth Exchange Programme.

It takes place in the University of Limerick this week, until July 10 and is targeted at people with Williams Syndrome aged 13 to 30.

With the theme, ‘Our Music,

Our Culture’, some 80 people from 11 different European coun-tries will attend.

Activities will include music workshops, theatre workshops, flora and fauna trails, an intro-duction to Gaelic games, and day-trips to Bunratty Castle and the Cliffs of Moher.

The young people in atten-dance will also be encouraged to showcase the music and culture from their home countries.

Ann Breen, founder and Hon-orary President of the WSAI, said: “We chose ‘Music and Cul-ture’ as the theme for the camp because almost all people with Williams Syndrome have hyper-sensitive hearing and some have perfect pitch and extraordinary musical talents.

“Throughout the week of the camp, we will be nurturing participants’ musical talent and their love of different types of music.

“We’ll also be showing our Eu-ropean visitors the best of Irish culture, from Gaelic games to trips to some of our best-loved tourist sites. In turn, we’re hop-ing to learn about other Euro-pean cultures, including through language exchanges, where all the young people at the camp will teach each other simple phrases

from their own languages.” Ann’s daughter Karen, who

is now in her early 30s, has Wil-liams Syndrome.

“When Karen was very young, we noticed how much she loved music and music-related pres-ents,” said Ann.“If she was up-set, music would calm her.

“As she got older, we brought her to music camps abroad a number of times, and that’s when we discovered she has per-fect pitch.

“She plays the keyboard, composes her own music, and has very definite opinions about the type of music she does and doesn’t like.

“The joy Karen gets from mu-sic inspired me to set up music summer camps for other people with Williams Syndrome.”

Acclaimed musician Honor Heffernan expressed her admi-ration for some of the young mu-sicians in attendance.

“I’ve been involved in some music projects in the past with young people who have Williams Syndrome and their musical abil-ity was amazing,” she said.

“It was really rewarding to work with them and to see both how accomplished they are mu-sically and how much joy they derive from music.

Minister Simon Harris and Honor Heffernan launch the European Summer camp for young people with Williams Syndrome with Karen Breen, Patricia Moylan from Booterstown and Alan Keady. PHOTO: MARC SULLIVAN

The launch was attended by a number of young people with Williams Syndrome, as well as their family-members.

Alan Keady is excited for what will be his fourth time taking part in the European Youth Ex-change programme.

“I’m really looking forward to the week in Limerick and getting

the chance to meet new friends, as well as linking back up with friends and leaders who I’ve met before,” he said.

“Being able to play instru-ments and learn about new cul-tures I’ve never heard of before will be great.

“Although my mam will be there as a leader, I’ll still get to

enjoy my own independence.” The summer camp taking

place in Limerick next week marks the first time ever that the European Federation of Williams Sydrome Associations will hold its annual gathering in Ireland.

all that. Before they could even walk properly they had mastered the art of kicking a ball. As soon as they could talk, they pledged allegiance to an English club – a never wavering, lifelong commitment; through good and bad times.

Their formative soccer years were spent in a well-run kids’ academy with a local club. All those enjoyable Saturday mornings served them well and they are now both heavily involved in schoolboy soccer, a serious commitment on the part of children and parents alike. There is training at least twice a week, in addition to weekend league fixtures, cup matches and various tournaments.

They’ve trained in torrential rain, howling gales and even snow showers. Sometimes it gets so bad that parents leave the sidelines and retreat to the warmth of their cars.

But the kids don’t care; they want to be out there – improving, developing, playing, honing their skills. I’ve huge admiration for the dedication of the youngsters – and that of the coaches and other parents.

Through my own boys, I now have a greater appreciation of a team sport like soccer. The health and fitness benefits are the most obvious. But I have also seen how being part of a

team can help kids develop their social skills. They learn respect, discipline and dedication. Coaches become important role models in their lives outside the home.

Even at schoolboy soccer level they will sometimes encounter conflict but, hopefully, will also understand effective methods of

Comment: Tony McCullagh, Dublin People group editor

Confessions of a reformed soccer sceptic

HERE’S a confession: I’m something of a latecomer to soccer. In fact, I was in my 40s before I started taking any sort of interest in the sport.

Prior to that, I couldn’t have cared less about the fortunes of the Republic of Ireland team, nor could I tell the difference between the Premier League and the Champions League. Seriously – I was that disinterested. If a match was on in a pub, I would often walk out. As for the offside rule, don’t even go there.

conflict resolution. Being part of a team teaches children things they won’t always learn from their parents or at school – skills like managing expectations, coping with disappointment, losing but living to fight another day. As such, soccer can be a microcosm of everyday life.

My colleagues are always quick to remind me of an article I wrote during the 1994 World Cup in which

I expressed my complete disinterest in soccer. With the passage of time, I now realise how wrong I was.

The Republic of Ireland’s recent performance in Euro 2016 gave the country a great lift and will hopefully encourage even more children to join local soccer clubs. Very few of them will go on to become the next Robbie Brady or Wes Hoolihan – but they will certainly have fun trying.

Green Army wins award for sportsmanshipNeil Fetherstonhaugh

THE Green Army has been congratulated for winning a prestigious French

award for sportsmanship.

Irish fans have been applauded across Europe for their exemplary behaviour and the positive atmosphere they brought with them as they travelled from match to match during the Republic of Ireland’s

recent Euro 2016 campaign.Minister for European Affairs,

Dara Murphy, congratulated the fans following the announcement by the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo, that she is to award the Medal of the City of Paris to supporters.

Speaking in Brussels last week, Minister Murphy said: “The Irish team and supporters who travelled to Euro 2016 really did us proud in France and on the European stage over the last few weeks.

“The fans showed true sportsmanship and the very best of the Irish spirit while in France, which has been a source of great pride for all of

us following the championship at home.

“This is a prestigious award and is great recognition of the positive contribution Irish fans have made to the overall spirit of Euro 2016 and in representing our country abroad. It’s very well-deserved and an award that we can all be proud of.”

As a brief member of the Green Army for the historic win over Italy in the Stade Pierre-Mauroy on Wednesday, June 22 I can attest to the behaviour of the brilliant Irish fans who really made the game an exciting and fun encounter.

All the way, from the packed city centre of Lille to the ground and beyond into the night, their joyful celebrations embodied all that is great about the Irish soccer fan abroad.

We joined the ‘ole, ole, ole’ chanting masses that had completely taken over the Place Charles de Gaulle while, much to the amusement of locals, they kicked footballs high into the air and sang songs about their heroes.

By late afternoon the excitement was reaching fever pitch and it was time to cram onto a sweaty metro for the journey out to the stadium located a few kilometres from the city.

Even though by this stage in the campaign the Irish fans had already earned their reputation for fun and frolics it was still impressive the patience local commuters and families going about their business showed while tens of thousands of young men and some women took over their town.

The atmosphere at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy was electric. I’ve been to a few sporting fixtures both at home and abroad but I’ve never experienced anything like the pre-game thrill that night.

The green and white colours of the Irish fans vastly outnumbered the blues of the Italians but despite the loud and raucous behaviour the French police could only grin and smile at their antics as the hordes descended on the stadium.

There clearly was no sense of tension among the police as they happily posed for pictures, a far cry and a different picture from the images that emerged from the opening stages of the tournament when English fans clashed with rivals in Marseilles.

The noise of the fans inside the stadium nearly took the roof off and when we scored it sealed what had been a great and proud night to be Irish.

The fans showed true

sportsmanship and the very best of the Irish spirit while in France, which has been a source of great pride for all of us following the championship at home.

Teens avoid jail for violent attackDeclan Brennan

AN AMBULANCE driver has said he feels he has failed as a par-ent after his son took part in an extremely violent attack.

Dylan Gray and co-accused

Dylan Barry (both 19) have avoid-ed a jail sentence for their part in the attack.

Dublin Circuit Criminal Court heard how both men punched and kicked their victim before Gray dragged him to the ground where the attackers continued

Facebook.com/dublinpeople

twitter.com/dublinpeople

to punch him. The victim, Ni-gel Kennedy, refused to make a statement to gardaí so no assault charges could be brought.

Judge Melanie Greally said that this was fortunate for the accused and said they both en-gaged in extreme acts of violence. She said the victim was kicked in the head and punched when he was on the ground.

Barry, of Castlecourt, Killiney, and Gray, of Cois Cualann, Lough-linstown, both pleaded guilty to violent disorder at Missoni’s chipper, Sallynoggin, on Decem-ber 13, 2014.

Judge Greally said that after their arrest both men were apolo-getic and remorseful but gave no real explanation for the attack.

Noting their youth and im-maturity at the time and their absence of any other convic-tions, she suspended a sentence of three years’ imprisonment on condition they complete 240

hours of community service to be completed in the next year.

The attack began as the vic-

tim left the chipper and Barry stopped the victim with his hand. The victim was then surrounded by five men. Gray and Barry pushed the victim outside up against a wall and began attack-ing him.

Gray’s father, Derek Gray, told the court that as an ambulance driver he was totally against vio-lence and had found it hard to believe his son had done this.

“We felt we had failed him as parents,” Mr Gray said.

Lawyers for Barry said that he had been bullied in school. He outlined a traumatic history of sustained violence against him in which Barry had his hair set on fire and lost clumps of hair dur-ing repeated assaults.

Counsel said Barry had ex-pressed genuine remorse during Garda interviews.

Series of events to mark the Battle of the SommeNeil Fetherstonhaugh

THE National Library of Ireland (NLI) is to commemorate the 100th anniversary of

the Battle of the Somme with a series of events throughout the month of July.

The programme will be headlined by ‘Words and Music from the War’, an evening of readings and music relating to World War I.

The British Ambassador to Ireland, Dominick Chilcott, will participate in the readings, and will be joined by Kevin Boushel, Niall Ó Sioradáin and actor Cathy Belton to present a selection of poems and letters from the NLI’s collections at 8pm on Wednesday, July 6.

Further events include public tours, film screenings and a panel discussion with History Ireland editor, Tommy Graham.

In association with the Imperial War Museum, London, the NLI will screen the documentary film ‘The Battle of the Somme’ a number of times between Monday, July 11 and

Friday 22 in the NLI’s lecture theatre. The film was released in 1916 during the Somme Campaign, and was seen at the time by over 20 million people.

‘WWI Ireland: Exploring the Irish Experience’ is a public tour of the exhibition that will focus on the Irish experience of World War 1. The guided tour will take place at 2pm on Thursday, July 15.

History Ireland Hedge School on the Battle of the Somme is a panel discussion with History Ireland editor, Tommy Graham, and guests as they mark the anniversary of the Battle of the Somme at 7pm on Tuesday, July 19.

Speaking about the series of

A ration party of the Royal Irish Rifles in a trench during the Battle of the Somme, July 1916.▪

events to mark the centenary of the battle, Catherine McSharry, Head of Outreach at the NLI, said: “The Battle of the Somme was the largest battle of World War I on the Western Front, with more than one million men wounded or killed. Among the dead were over 3,500 Irish soldiers, with many more wounded.

“The National Library of Ireland’s exhibition ‘World War Ireland: Exploring the Irish Experience’ shines a light on

Irish involvement in this war that changed the world forever. To remember those impacted by the Battle of the Somme, we are hosting a series of events a century later. As part of the programme, we are very pleased to welcome British Ambassador to Ireland, Dominick Chilcott, to the headline event ‘Words and Music from the War’ on July 6.”

Brave James is in the running to become an idolJAMES Bermingham, from Tal-laght, has been announced as a finalist in this year’s inaugural Rock ‘n’ Run Idol contest.

He will be one of the finalists from Dublin, Clare, Meath, Gal-

way and Down who were select-ed by an expert panel of judges who managed to narrow the wide pool of entries to six inspi-rational men and women.

All six finalists are currently training hard to take part in the

James Bermingham▪

Rock ‘n’ Roll Dublin Half Mara-thon & 10k race on August 7.

The finalists are also battling it out in a public vote to become the first Rock ‘n’ Run Idol and win an all-expenses paid trip to take part in Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas.

James is a prison officer from Dublin and in October of last year weighed 24 stone.

Four years ago James tragi-cally lost a baby to still birth and his lifestyle and weight spiralled out of control. After not making the final in Operation Transfor-mation last year, James bravely decided to go it alone and take up running.

He started doing some 5k runs and now weighs 18.5 stone and is determined to keep going.

Another participant, Suzanne, started to run in 2012, but felt so embarrassed she would only run

when it was dark at night and wear her husband’s woolly golf hat so no one would notice her. To gain confidence and reach her goal of completing a 5k, Suzanne decided to start a group called Sloggers to Joggers. Having started with five ladies the group now boasts 250 active running members all over Ireland.

James’s inspirational story caught the attention of the Rock ‘n’ Run judges and he is now competing to become the first Rock ‘n’ Run Idol and win a trip to take part in Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas in October.

The general public is invited to vote for the winner by going to runrock-nroll.com/dublin/rock-idol/ and reading the incredible entries from the six finalists.

The winner will receive an all-expenses paid trip to the Rock

‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon in November, the world’s largest night-time running event which takes place on the Las Vegas Strip.

Finalists also received a com-plimentary entry into this year’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Dublin Half Mara-

thon which has expanded into an action-packed festival of running with an all-new 10k and 5k race added.

The popular race will start in Dublin’s Docklands and finish in the Phoenix Park on the new date of August 7.

New school to open in GreenhillsTHE Minister for Education and Skills, Richard Bruton, has announced the opening of a new primary school under the patronage of Educate Together in Greenhills.

The development is part of the process of primary school divestment and follows surveys of parents on patronage choice in some 43 towns. The aim of the surveys is to establish the level of parental demand for a wider choice in the patronage of primary schools within these areas of stable population.

Following agreement with

the Archdiocese of Dublin, the new school will open in September in permanent accommodation in the former St Peters Boys’ National School, Limekiln Road, Greenhills.

The minister said: “I am delighted to announce the opening, from September 2016, of a new primary school under the patronage of Educate Together in Greenhills, Dublin.

“We are determined to provide more choice for parents and to make it easier for parents to enrol their children in multidenominational schools, where they wish to do so.

“That is why the Programme for Government commits to reaching 400 non-denominational and multidenominational schools by 2030.

“That is a highly ambitious target, and represents more than a trebling of the current rate of transfer of Catholic schools to multidenominational patrons.”

The minister added: “We will continue to work with all stakeholders to facilitate the divesting process and strengthen parental choice and diversity within our school system.”

Pictured at the wreath-laying ceremony are Tim Carey, Heritage Officer, cathaoirleach, Cllr Cormac Devlin, Thomas Glendon, artist and sculptor and Col Max Walker, British Defense Attaché.

Dead of both sides remembered at 1916 event in DeansgrangeNeil Fetherstonhaugh

A MOVING commemoration of all those who died during the 1916 Rising was held in Deans-grange Cemetery last week.

The Southside cemetery is be-lieved to be one of the most signif-icant 1916 sites outside Dublin City Centre as nearly 50 men, women and children who were killed in the Rising are buried there.

One plot in particular provided a unique moment of reconcilia-tion as it contains the remains of Volunteer 2nd Lt Sean Costello, Volunteer Andrew Joseph Byrne, Guardsman Peter Ennis of the Scots Guards and civilians William Carrick, Joseph Clarke and Thom-as Kenyon.

It has been suggested that this is the only single plot in the coun-try to contain casualties from both sides, as well as civilians.

The large assembled crowd were led by a Defence Forces pip-er in a public procession with the cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, Cllr Cormac Devlin, and British De-fense Attaché Col Max Walker to a wreath-laying ceremony with Óglaigh na hÉireann.

After a solemn minute’s silence at the graveside and a lament by the piper, attendees were once again led in procession to the dedication of a unique new sculp-ture that was commissioned from renowned artist Thomas Glendon to honour those who died in the Rising and are buried at Deans-grange Cemetery.

The event culminated in reflec-tive speeches by Tim Carey, the council’s Heritage Officer, artist Thomas Glendon and Cllr Devlin that was followed by the raising of the national flag by a Defence Forces flag party accompanied by a drummer and bugler.

Speaking at the event, cathao-

irleach Cllr Devlin, said: “I believe this is a most fitting monument, not only to the significance of this cemetery but also to the people who died during the 1916 Rising. I would like to commend our De-fense Forces for their role in these commemorations both today and nationally throughout this cente-nary year.

“Additionally, the welcome participation of Col Max Walker, British Defense Attaché, speaks to the mature relationship which has developed between our two coun-tries in recent years.”

The council’s Heritage Officer, Tim Carey, added: “Deansgrange Cemetery is one of the most im-portant national sites associated with the 1916 Rising. Buried with-in the walls of the cemetery are at least 49 people who lost their lives during Easter Week. It is for this reason that we are here com-memorating the event.”

Free tours of Deansgrange Cemetery with a focus on the 1916 Rising take place every Wednes-day at 2pm until August 31.

Cohabiting and social welfare paymentsQuestion

Ihave applied for Jobseeker’s Allowance but I was told that I’m not eligible because of

my live-in partner’s earnings. Why is this?

AnswerThe Department of Social

Protection (DSP) treats married and unmarried couples in the same way when assessing entitlement to a means-tested social welfare payment.

It assesses the total income of the household, rather than the circumstances of the individual claimant.

Sometimes a certain amount of income, or income from particular sources, is not taken into account.

This means that if you are married, or are living with another person in an intimate

and committed relationship, the means of that person are also taken into account. This is the case even if only one of you is actually claiming a payment.

The DSP uses detailed definitions and criteria to assess whether a couple is cohabiting and you can read these online at welfare.ie.

How the means of a couple are assessed differs slightly depending on the payment being applied for.

For Jobseeker’s Allowance the DSP adds all your combined means together and then assesses them against the maximum household payment for your circumstances.

If your spouse or partner is getting a social welfare payment in their own right, your means are taken to be half of the total means of yourself and your spouse or partner.

The Department of Social Protection (DSP) treats married and unmarried couples in the same way when assessing entitlement to a means-tested social welfare payment. PIC POSED

Tax Appeals CommissionQuestionWhat is the new Tax Appeals Commission?

Answer The Finance Act 2015 came

into operation on March 21, 2016. This Act gives effect to a revised tax appeals process and established a new independent statutory Tax Appeals Com-mission (TAC), which replaces the former Office of the Appeal Commissioners.

The TAC adjudicates, hears and determines appeals against Revenue decisions concerning taxes and duties under this Act.

There are currently two Ap-peal Commissioners, appointed by the Minister for Finance for a period of seven years.

The main change to the tax appeals process is the require-ment that all appeals are now made directly to the TAC and not to Revenue in the first instance.

The Appeal Commissioners have sole responsibility for accepting or refusing appeals, although Revenue can raise

objections to appeals. If both parties agree, the Ap-

peal Commissioners can make determinations based on writ-ten submissions (rather than a full hearing).

However, you can insist on a hearing if you wish.

All hearings are held in public. However, you can request that a hearing be held in private.

To improve the transpar-ency of the appeals process, the Appeal Commissioners are required to publish anonymised versions of all of their deter-minations. Another significant change is that appeals can no longer be re-heard before a Circuit Court judge. You can appeal to the High Court on a point of law, but not in relation to the facts.

Daragh Soden’s winning snap.▪

Southside photographer is honouredA SOUTHSIDE born photogra-phy graduate from the Univer-sity of South Wales (USW) has won a top industry honour.

Daragh Soden (26), Cabinteely, who has just completed a degree in Documentary Photography, scooped the Undergraduate Single Image award with a shot taken from a much wider project, ‘Young Dubliners’, in the British Journal of Photography’s (BJP) Breakthrough 2016.

Daragh’s Young Dubliners collection is a series of images through which he tries to con-vey something he experienced growing up, and also “something about the times [the subjects] are growing up in now – a time of re-cession and austerity”.

Despite Soden’s knowledge of the city, Young Dubliners fea-tures shots of people he doesn’t know, and his winning image was caught off-the-cuff on the bus.

“I had just finished a long day shooting Young Dubliners and was catching the bus home,” he recalls.

“When I got to the top of the stairs, I looked down the aisle and spotted this young couple chilling at the back. I sat a few seats ahead of them for a while, my nerves bubbling about in my belly.

“Eventually, I plucked up the courage to turn around to ask

for a photograph. They were cool about it and just stared out the window as if I wasn’t there while I wobbled about trying to focus as the bus swung round corners. I didn’t see the photograph until a few months later, when I devel-oped the film at university.

Of his college experience, he added: “It is one of the best courses to study photography in the world. The lecturers are not only wise mentors but are also leading practitioners.”

Bruno Bayley, European man-aging editor of Vice UK, said of the Daragh’s winning image: “It’s a very tender picture. There’s a lovely dynamic between the two people in the picture, and there’s a timelessness to it.”

Daragh’s work, along with the other winners in the awards, will be printed by London pro-lab theprintspace and exhibited at The Old Truman Brewery in east London as part of the Free Range graduate shows.

Dún Laoghaire group receives funding

THE Dun Laoghaire Community Training Centre, which works with 20 young people

involved in a drug and alco-hol education programme, is among Dublin’s sport-ing heroes, executives and community leaders who will benefit from fresh funding announced by the Minister for Children and Youth Af-fairs, Dr Katherine Zappone, recently.

Minister Zappone said the investment in 14 commu-nity based projects will not only greatly improve the job prospects of individualw young people but will provide Dublin with leaders for the future across a range of areas.

The funding is being made available under the dormant accounts fund which takes money from long-forgotten bank accounts to re-invest in local areas.

Children’s Minister Zappone said: “By breathing new life into long forgotten money we

FITZPATRICK’S Casino in Dun Laoghaire is one of a current group of four casinos with lo-cations throughout Dublin and also in Limerick City.

Where is this casino located is one of the most common ques-tions that the staff get asked by Dun Laoghaire’s locals, despite being open over five years now.

This is perhaps because all there is to identify the casino at 97 Lower George’s Street is the doorway, but don’t judge a book by its cover, as they say.

Through the hallway the ca-sino opens out to offer a vast selection of slot machines which are all linked to progressive jack-pots as well as roulette.

Friendly staff will welcome you with quality service along with complimentary snacks and drinks while you play.

The décor is luxurious and the casino is always clean with music playing and news and sports on the TV screens around the club.

The casino operates as a pri-vate members’ club and mem-bers benefit greatly from daily draws every two hours from 2pm.

There is a double payout if you get 5 x 7s on the reels and every Saturday night there are big draws from 8pm with deli-cious hot food buffets and you might even get to spin the Wheel of Fortune.

This is very much a new age

casino where members can feel safe and have their loyalty recog-nised through the company’s re-wards scheme.

The focus of Fitzpatrick’s Ca-sino Group is to offer a casino that entertains its members and can be a real option for everyone when looking for something to do for a few hours, perhaps with friends, family or colleagues.

A visit to the casino is very much encouraged and should you wish to get your luck started simply bring this article along with you to avail of a €20 Match Bet when you sign up as a new member.

Dun Laoghaire area were among the 3,000 who visited Fron-Goch in North Wales

The visit was organised by the Dun Laoghaire Eblana Club in memory of all who were interned at the time, including

Moran had previously played a part in the the 1913 Lock Out as President of the Barman and Groccery Workers Union (now Mandate).

Art exhibition treat for East Pier walkersTHE Dun Laoghaire

Harbour Company unveiled a unique art exhibition earlier this

summer that will remain on show for visitors to the town.

The Association of Marine Artists has returned after a successful 2015 exhibition to the East Pier with a diverse collection of sea and landscapes available to view as locals and visitors stroll along.

The exhibition of 12 artists takes place on Dun Laoghaire’s East Pier from 10am – 6pm on Saturday, July 30, Sunday 31, Monday, August 1, Saturday, September 3 and Sunday 4.

The exhibition will feature the work of two exhibiting artists, Derek Lyons and Roisin Duffy. Derek Lyons grew up in Dublin and graduated from Limerick

College of Art & Design. Now living in Co Wicklow he has become a big fan of ‘plein eir’

painting. If he’s not in his studio painting, he can be found with an easel and canvas in hand out and about painting the busy harbours or fantastic country side that surrounds him. See https://dereklyonsart.wordpress.com

Painting in acrylic on canvas, Roisin’s subject matter is the ordinary and mundane things which are common us all - home, family, personal relationships, and how we interact with our friends, our animals, and the world around us.

Colour and balance are the most important aspects of her work. Deceptive in its initial simplicity, each piece tells a story, and in writing an accompanying poem for every piece she shares with the viewer not just the finished painting, but also the deeper emotional story behind it. I was delighted to hear that the original Sugababes are making a comeback.

Mutya, Keisha and Siobhan will be back with a new album in 2017.

Siobhan Donaghy has confirmed they’ll release a record next year - although she won’t give an exact date.

The three girls reformed back in 2012 but their comeback stalled after they released single ‘Flatline’.

Coldplay closed the Glastonbury Festival with a guest appearance from The Bee Gees’ Barry Gibb.

As well as playing a number of tracks from their latest album ‘A Head Full of Dreams’, the band also paid tribute to the late Viola Beach by playing their song ‘Boys That Sing’.

All four members of the indie rock band Viola Beach died in February when their car plunged from a bridge in Sweden.

RIP Viola Beach.

Singer turned actor Harry Styles is making sure he carries on a career in music outside One Direction.

He has apparently signed a solo deal with Columbia Records. The terms of Harry’s deal aren’t known and there’s no timeline

for a release date of material either. Is there anything Harry can’t do?

And last but not least, it’s nearly eight years since Rachel Stevens took part in ‘Strictly Come Dancing’, but she says she’d love to go back.

The former S Club singer was runner-up in series 6. Although Rachel admits she’d like to return to the show, she

says keeping up dance lessons once it finished was tough.

in association with

a curious tale for the Bord Gáis energy stageTHE National Theatre

has revealed dates and venues for the 2017 tour of its multi-

award-winning production of ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time’, adapted from Mark Haddon’s best-selling book by Simon Stephens and directed by Marianne Elliott.

The Bord Gáis Energy Theatre announced that due to phenom-enal demand Curious Incident will return next April for one week only from Tuesday, April 25 to Saturday April 29.

Curious Incident will begin this second major tour of the

UK and Ireland at The Lowry in Salford in January 2017, where it began and finished its first phenomenally successful tour which was seen by almost 400,000 people across the UK and Ireland.

After Salford, Curious Incident continues its journey around the UK and Ireland, touring to Aylesbury, Edinburgh, Leeds, Canterbury, Bath, Southampton, Nottingham, Belfast, Dublin, Cardiff, Oxford, Bristol, Plym-outh, Birmingham, Liverpool, Bradford, Glasgow, and finishing in Milton Keynes on September 16.

National Theatre producer Kash Bennett said: “We were

overwhelmed by the enthusi-astic reception from audiences around the UK and Ireland when we toured The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time in 2014-15, and we are delighted to take this beautiful and inventive show to new venues and make a return visit to others next year.”

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time received seven Olivier Awards in 2013, including Best New Play, Best Director, Best Design, Best Lighting Design and Best Sound Design and five Tony Awards on Broadway including Best Play.

The show tells the story of Christopher Boone, who is 15- years-old.

He stands beside Mrs Shears’ dead dog, which has been speared with a garden fork.

It is seven minutes after mid-night and Christopher is under suspicion.

He records each fact in a book he is writing to solve the mystery of who murdered Wellington. He has an extraor-dinary brain, and is exceptional at maths while ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. He has never ventured alone beyond the end of his road, he detests being touched and distrusts strangers. But his detective work, forbidden by his father, takes him on a frightening jour-ney that upturns his world.

check the labelling of sunscreens as both UVA and UVB rays can cause extensive skin damage,” said Mr Scully.

“It is particularly important that parents select a product that has UVA and a high SPF for children and that it is applied fre-quently to ensure sufficient sun protection.

“With skin cancer one of the five most common cancers in Ire-land, sunscreen is one of the best defences against sun exposure.

“Products that are incorrectly used or used beyond the safe period after opening can have re-duced effect for consumers.”

Amárach Research carried out

the survey among 1,000 people, on behalf of the HPRA in May.

Information on sunscreen la-bels and tips for sensible sun exposure for adults and children can be found on the HPRA web-site (www.hpra.ie/cosmetics/sun-screen).

The burning questions about sunscreensNEARLY two thirds (62 per cent) of Irish people do not always check the label of sunscreens for protection against the two harmful rays (UVA and UVB) from the sun, a Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) national survey has revealed.

In fact, when deciding to pur-chase a sunscreen, only four in 10 (38 per cent) considered the sun protection factor (SPF) most important and one fifth (20 per cent) considered UVA protection the most important.

While the level of familiar-ity with sunscreen terminology is relatively high, there is a worry-

ing lack of understanding of spe-cific labelling attributes amongst sections of the adult population.

Almost one third (30 per cent) admit to not understanding the term UVA while 27 per cent admit to not understanding the term SPF. Only one quarter (25 per cent) understood the term ‘Broad Spectrum’ – which indicates that a product provides protection against both UVA and UVB rays.

Darren Scully, Cosmetics Man-ager, HPRA, said consumers need to be aware of the skin protection benefits of applying a sunscreen with UVA and an appropriate SPF protection.

The sinus cavities are in direct communication with the nasal airways;therefore what affects one may affect the other.

there are four groups of sinuses: A. Frontal - Paired, in frontal bone. B. Maxillary - Paired, in maxilla. Related to tooth-bearing area of maxilla. C. Ethmoid - D. Sphenoid - paired in the sphenoid bone. The bones of the face and skull have small but definite movement. These movements are essential for good function anddrainage of the sinuses. If there is restriction in these movements then sinuses can become blocked by the fluid they produce, and or dust particles, etc. Anyone who has had a sinus headache knows how thisfeels. The sinus drainage also involves structures in the throat, the upperribs and the upper part of the chest. Again freedom of movement here isvital for the integrity of the sinuses. Traumas to any or all of the abovestructures may cause impairment or lack of function to the sinus pumpsand drainage mechanisms. Osteopathic treatment with regards toblocked or inflamed sinuses is very gentle and soothing. It involves insuring mobility of the structures involved in sinus drainage, and gentlemovements to the bones surrounding the sinuses. In cases where there isno permanent damage to the sinus mechanism osteopathic treatmentcan be very successful.

Stay safe on post exam getaways

MANY Leaving Cert students are looking forward to their

post-exams getaway – and that means lots of worried parents.

Leaving Cert holidays are almost a rite of passage these days, and it’s a great way to blow-off steam for a week or two following what is undoubtedly some of the most stressful weeks in a student’s young life.

However, for some this will be their first holiday abroad without supervision and it’s as important to stay safe as it is to have fun.

Tropical Medical Bureau (TMB) has compiled a handy list of top tips for those heading away to make sure they get the most from their well-earned holiday.

• Check your passport is up-to-date. It should always be valid for a minimum of six months beyond the date of travel. Also, always bring a photocopied version with you.

• Make sure you always have the number and address of the hotel or apartment you’re staying in with you at all times. If you get separated from your friends, you’ll at least be able to travel back

safely to the accommodation.

• Buy a decent money belt. Many tourist destinations that are popular with students are bound to have pickpockets. Just be sure to keep the money belt out of sight.

• Make sure you have received all required vaccinations for the country you are visiting. TMB has released a special package for students for Summer 2016, meaning you can get your vaccinations, consultation and a tailor-made prescription from €134.

• Organise and pack a mini first aid kit as some medication may be difficult to get abroad.

• Not only should you use sunscreen, you should also apply insect repellent to help protect from painful bites. The TMB has its own range of insect repellents, including DEET-Free Repellent and Bug Bands, available in all TMB Clinics, Doc Morris & Lloyds Pharmacies throughout Ireland or on Travelshop.ie.

• If you suffer from any allergies, make sure you and your friends know how to handle any reaction.

Dublin Airport wins accessibility awardDUBLIN Airport has won a

major European award for the way in which it deals with disabled passengers and those travelling with reduced mobility.

The city’s international airport won the inaugural Accessible Airport Award at ACI EUROPE’s Best Airport Awards in Athens.

Dublin Airport was also short-listed in the best large airport category, which was won by Heathrow Airport.

“We are absolutely delighted to win this prestigious award for accessibility ahead of all our European peers,” said Dublin Airport Managing Director, Vincent Harrison.

“This award recognises the significant efforts that the

Dublin Airport team makes on a daily basis to ensure that disabled passengers and those with reduced mobility have the best possible airport experience.

“Winning this prize is a major endorsement for what we have achieved in this area to date and will encourage us to continue to improve the service that we offer to our disabled customers and to travellers with reduced mobility.”

The judges for the award found that Dublin Airport “excels in accessibility features and facilities, including adult changing places, two separate relief areas for guide dogs and fully accessible retail and catering areas.”

The judges also cited Dublin

Dublin Airport Managing Director, Vincent Harrison (lieft) accepting the Accessible Airport Award from Yannis Yallouros, European Disability Forum’s Executive Committee.

Airport’s website accessibility, which meets the required

accessibility standards for persons with disabilities.

• Reduce your alcohol intake, especially in a hot climate, as excess can lead to serious dehydration. Stay hydrated and drink clean, bottled water continuously. Sparkling water is always the safer option. If you have concerns about the state of a country’s water, the TMB also has its own range of water purification tablets.

• Travel Insurance is a

necessity; make sure to check your policies to see if you are covered when taking part in outdoor activities, such as water sports.

• Always keep your drink covered and in sight to prevent the risk of it being spiked or tampered with.

• Always adopt safe sexual practices to avoid the risk

of contracting sexually transmitted diseases. International travellers are at great risk of contracting STDs, including HIV, if they have been sexually exposed to anybody with any of these diseases.

For more travel health tips and advice make an appointment with your local TMB travel health clinic and speak to one of their qualified

professionals. These experts will guide

you through the health requirements for your destination, telling you all you need to know about vaccinations, mosquito bite prevention and food hygiene.

To book contact the Tropical Medical Bureau on 1850-487674 or visit www.tmb.ie.

Recently however the atmosphere is changing.

After little Patricia’s death hits the whole town the question

arises...will the customers in The Lo-cal stay strong and avoid confessing all? More importantly for Charlie with all that has happened in her own life and all the things she has heard over the bar counter, can she stay quiet and avoid revealing all?

The Confessional is open and your barmaid will see you now. The only thing to be found at the bottom of all those empty glasses is the truth. And God-willing, a little forgive-ness……

LIBERTIES Press has published a new non-fiction book, ‘What’s Another Year? Ireland’s First Five Decades at Eurovision’ by music journalist Mick Lynch.

Following on from the success of his first book, ‘The Beatles in Ireland’, Mick combines his life-long passion for the Eurovision Song Contest with extensive research, exclusive photographs and journalistic dexterity to bring to life this finely-tuned account of everything Eurovision.

Ireland’s love affair with this yearly extravaganza has been part of our musical heritage for five glamorous decades. In this book, Mick opens our eyes to the exhilaration behind the scenes, featuring exclusive interviews with the Irish performers, directors, producers and the winning acts.

From the grassroots of the 1965 National Song Contest and Dickie Rock, to the sensationalism of Jedward, this book is truly a labour of love, and a testament to the performers who stole our hearts in so many generations of musicians and music-lovers.

In What’s Another Year? Mick Lynch takes us behind-the-scenes of Europe’s premiere televisual event. We hear the personal stories behind the songs, the singers and songwriters. It features contributions from Mickey Joe Harte, Dana, Linda Martin, Johnny Logan, Gay

Brne, Maxi, Bill Whelan, Larry Gogan, Phil Coulter, Louis Walsh and more, and an exclusive foreword from Shay Healy, the composer of the award-winning song entry ‘What’s Another Year?’ from 1980.

In 1965, the National Song Contest, along with the dulcet tones of Brendan Bowyer and Dickie Rock, won over the hearts of the nation.

Over five decades, no country has won the competition more often. Why has Ireland been so successful, and what does it take to win?

Mick Lynch asks the people who have been there and who have seen it first-hand. From the backing singers, stagehands, directors, producers, songwriters and singers, right up to the winning artists, we are given a rare insight into what the camera never captures.

Featuring revealing, warm interviews, this book tells the lively, tightly-knit Irish scene that was Ireland’s romance with the Eurovision.

Mick Lynch’s passion for Irish music overflows, making his second book a must-read for anyone interested in our musical heritage and our place on the stages of Europe.

What’s Another Year? is the perfect accompaniment to the televisual event of the European calendar.

Mick Lynch grew up in Mountmellick surrounded by music.

His dad played with several showbands, including the Artane Boys Band, but Mick’s attempts to master the keyboard failed miserably. Mick studied journalism and began working freelance. He has contributed to various books, radio shows and websites over the years. His first book, ‘The Beatles and Ireland’ was published in 2008. The Eurovision Song Contest was always a guilty pleasure. He has attended Eurovision events in the UK, Denmark, and the Ukraine, and has met many of the people associated with Eurovision over the years, including the competition’s first ever winner, Lys Assia.

morning, full of laughter and at-mosphere, as animal lovers (and their dogs) come together for this great cause.

Autism Assistance Dogs Ireland is a national charity providing highly trained assistance dogs for children with autism and their families.

Their dogs are specially trained to provide safety and companion-ship to children, enabling social inclusion and a more independent life.

These dogs help transform the lives of children and their families. Having an assistance dog allows the families to be able to go out again and take their child to plac-es that they had stopped going to.

The dog also helps them to be able to partake in simple everyday activities that the rest of us take for granted. A simple trip to the local shop can be a very stressful task for a child with autism.

Autism Assistance Dogs was selected as the nominated charity for this year’s Furry 5k Woof Walk by the Horkans Group, which in-cludes Horkans Garden & Lifestyle Centres and Petworld.

“Autism Assistance Dogs Ire-

land is absolutely delighted to have been selected by the Hor-kans Group as their nominated charity,” said Nuala Geraghty, Training Services Manager.

“We are looking forward to building our relationship with the Horkans Group, which has effec-tively created over 200 new brand ambassadors to talk about Autism Assistance Dogs Ireland and what we are trying to achieve.

“It takes up to two years to train each dog at a cost of €15,000 and all our money is raised through fundraising events.”

Chief Operating Officer with Horkans Group, Stuart Cooper, said Autism Assistance Dogs Ire-land were chosen as the charity because of their amazing work across Ireland.

“We are really looking forward to supporting them over the next few years,” he added.

“This partnership will give us a wonderful opportunity to give back to families across Ireland. Autism affects 1 in 100 people here and it personally touches some of our own families here at the Horkans Group, so it gives us even more commitment to active-

Dublin students Tap into techFOUR Dublin students are aiming to revolutionise the world of business networking with the introduction of mobile technology that enables people to exchange contact details at business events through a simple tap of the wrist.

Saoirse Allen, Daniel O’Farrell, Sean Óg O’Laoire and Stephen McSweeney are founders of Tap Networking, which has been chosen for the prestigious DCU Ryan Academy UStart Student Accelerator programme.

The programme provides mentoring and expertise to bring start-ups to the next level. Óg O’Laoire explained the benefits of Tap.

“Tap will allow attendees to exchange contact details through an NFC and GPS enabled bracelet, which allows users to connect online,” he said.

“When people connect with a simple tap or handshake their details are exchanged, allowing them then to concentrate on

deadline looms for student grant applications

THE national student grant awarding body, SUSI (Student Universal Support

Ireland), is urging students who have yet to submit their applications for student grant funding to do so now.

The deadline for applications for the 2016/17 academic year is this Friday, July 8.

SUSI is currently in its fifth year of operations and opened its 2016/17 online application system, for new and renewal student grants, on April 5.

So far SUSI has received 70,000 applications.

With the deadline looming, Graham Doyle, Head of Communications & Customer Service with SUSI, has a message for students.

“We are expecting to receive approximately 110,000 applications for the 2016/17 academic year,” he said.

“We have received 70,000 applications to-date and we

building important connections and relationships in the moment.

“It also provides event organisers with real time data and insights on events.”

Allen is from Rathfarnham and a past pupil of Our Lady’s Secondary School, Terenure. O’Farrell is a past pupil of St David’s CBS and from Coolock.

O’Laoire is a native of Glasnevin and a past pupil of Scoil Chaitríona and Stephen McSweeney, from Ballsbridge, is a past pupil of Sanford Park School, Ranelagh.

All four are current (Allen and O’Farrell) and past students (McSweeney and O’Laoire) of Marketing, Innovation and Technology at DCU.

Tap Networking is among ten companies on the UStart Student Accelerator Programme, that has start-ups across the technology, food, science and the digital sectors availing of strategic mentoring and business expertise.

The programme runs from May 25 to October 5. Details can be found online at www.ryanacademy.ie.

would urge students to apply before the deadline of July 8 to ensure that their applications receive priority.”

The national body has already awarded grants to 37,000 students for 2016/17, including almost 8,000 new students, the first time that such grant applications have been awarded so early.

“We have changed our process this year and are awarding new applicants earlier than ever before,” said Doyle.

“In previous years, Leaving Certificate students had to wait until they received their Leaving Certificate results and CAO offers late in August before we could award them.

“However, this year, based on learning from previous years, we are awarding students to the courses that they have identified in their applications to us, as soon as possible. We have already awarded almost 8,000 such students, which is great news.

“I would encourage students who are thinking of applying for a student grant to visit our website at www.susi.ie where they can review information about the eligibility criteria for student grant funding.

“In particular, they should use our online ‘grant eligibility reckoner’ where they can quickly, and easily, self-assess whether they may or may not be entitled to a student grant.”

Students are also encouraged to use their own SUSI ‘online application trackers’, where they can track the progress of their applications and confirm that documentation has been received without having to contact SUSI directly.

IT’S PROBABLY not fair to make comparisons between two new cars when they are not really competing with one another for the same customers. But what can you do when you get a Mercedes C220 coupé the week after driving the iconic Ford Mustang?

It might sound like heresy to many motor enthusiasts, but if I’m really honest, I must say that I preferred the C-Class. As I said in a previous issue the yellow Mustang attracted just too much attention for me, while the white-coloured C-Class was still classy, but much more dis-creet.

Price-wise there isn’t a huge difference. The 2.3-litre Eco Boost Mustang starts at €49,000,

while the more powerful 5-litre starts at €65,000. The C-Class automatic starts at €51,755. ‘Starts’ is the key word in all these prices, because it’s only when you visit a garage to buy a new car that you will become aware of all those extras.

So what did the Mer-cedes have to offer that so impressed me? Well for starters it was white and the weather was good that week, so it blended in very well. The 2.1-litre diesel en-gine had 170 brake horse power and that was enough power for me.

The Coupé didn’t have the famous Mercedes pointed star, with the manufacturers’ logo em-

bedded on the bonnet instead. Still the front of the car looked very very attrac-tive.

Inside the dash is naturally very much in the Mercedes style with buttons to scroll through the controls and you also get the

slave con-trols on the steering wheel.

It’s really a four-seater be-cause like the Mustang there is just about room for two people in the back seat, but head room is tight and you cannot open the back windows.

On the road the Mercedes handles extremely well

and when I parked I didn’t have many

people com-ing up to me to asking to take a photo-graph. I still

got a few nice comments for

the c Class, but there were more

discreet. There is a fine boot, but

once again no spare wheel, just a repair kit. However, there is a ‘well’ provided for a spare, so the advice is haggle with your dealer until you get a good deal on a spare.

When I was young a Mercedes was seen as a car that only a managing director of a company

would own. But as Mercedes Sales Manager Ciaran Allen keeps telling us at every launch, they are making more inroads into the younger market. And cars like the C Class coupé will certainly help Mercedes attract even younger customers.

C02 emissions are only 109 g/km, which equates to road road tax of only €190. And I always love the cruise control lever in Mercedes cars. Simply the best for cruise control. I also liked the way the side mirrors folded in when the central locking was applied.

The Mustang is classy and it was long overdue in the Irish market, but for a man like me who remembers black and white television, if I was buying I think I would prefer the white C-Class coupé to the yellow Mustang.

Airton welcomes new 162 reg plateTHE mid-year reg plate change has now established itself among Irish motorists, and with the car market enjoying a resurgence, Ford and Kia deal-ers Airton on Airton Road are introducing the 162 reg plate with an array of offers to tempt car buyers.

The 162 HappyDrive offers include 0 per cent finance on a number of Kia models, with PCP plans on the Ford Fiesta, Focus and C-MAX at a low rate of 4.25 per cent APR.

The Kia line-up of models is es-pecially strong this year, not least with the new Sportage and Opti-ma. Two mainstays of the range,

the Kia Rio and Cee’d are both on offer with 0 per cent finance, as is the new sporty Cee’d GT Line.

In conjunction with the Hap-pyDrive new car offers, Airton is running a HappyService deal from just €119, which includes a mini valet.

The new Kia Optima is among the highlights of the 162 model line-up at Airton Kia on Airton Road. ▪

Holiday theft warning

The average theft claim in Dublin last year amounted to €3,467.▪

HOMEOWNERS are being warned to lock up their valuables before setting off on holiday after a re-

cent study revealed the average theft claim in Dublin last year amounted to €3,467.

“We all know that major cities, commuter counties, and densely populated residential areas are a target for criminals,” said AA Director of Consumer Affairs, Conor Faughnan.

“While there are some stark differences between counties it is clear that no matter where you live, there is always a risk your home could become a victim of theft.

“It’s really important that you have adequate home insurance cover in place, something many people still do not have.”

Surprisingly, Dublin came in

at ninth place nationally, with householders claiming for an average of €3,467, while residents in Mayo claimed the least for theft in 2015 at just €650.

With many householders setting off on summer holidays, AA Home Insurance are urging them to take the necessary precautions to help reduce the risk of becoming another statistic.

“I don’t like giving people advice that costs money but a monitored alarm system is worthwhile,” said Faughnan.

“It does provide a deterrent

effect and while it may not make your home totally secure, it does at least tell potential thieves that you are not an easy target. It is also reassuring to know that if anything does happen at home you will know about it while on

your holidays.”AA Home Insurance offers the

following advice on keeping your house safe:

• Check your home insurance policy to make sure expensive items are covered.

• Avoid leaving valuable items in clear view – instead, be creative with where you hide them. Hiding your items in several locations throughout the house is a good idea.

• Don’t post your holiday plans on Facebook and Twitter. Switch off Location Services on your phone.

• Before jetting off make sure windows and doors are firmly locked and always remember to set the house alarm. Invest in light switch timers.

Workplace wellbeing seminars launchedTHE Nutrition & Health Foun-dation (NHF), organisers of National Workplace Wellbeing Day, is hosting a series of free information seminars for pub-lic and private employers of all sizes on how to create effec-tive workplace wellbeing pro-grammes.

The first seminar took place at Mercer Ireland’s offices on June 29 in Charlemont Street and fea-tured the winners of the recent NHF National Workplace Wellbe-ing Awards 2016. These awards were sponsored by Mercer Ire-land.

The winners, personal tax ad-visers Fenero, along with Dublin secondary school Coláiste Bríde, and the Central Statistics Office, shared their experiences of devel-oping award winning initiatives.

Allianz and Vodafone are among the organisations that will feature in future NHF Best Prac-tice seminars, planned for Octo-

Dr Muireann Cullen, Nutrition & Health Foundation, said: “Em-ployee wellbeing is crucial to staff retention and productivity levels.

“Our recent study showed that seven in 10 (69 per cent) employ-ees are more likely to stay longer with employers who show an interest in their health and well-being while half would consider leaving employers who don’t.

“We’ve seen from the increas-ing numbers of employers par-ticipating in National Workplace Wellbeing Day that employers are keen to do more in this area.”

Dr Cullen added: “The NHF Best Practice seminars are designed to provide them with practical infor-mation and inspiration on how to create a programme for their em-ployees.”

Employee wellbeing is crucial to staff retention and productivity levels, says Dr Muireann Cullen.

Dear sacred Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked for many favours. This time I ask for a very special one (mention). Take it, dear Jesus, and place it within your own broken heart, where your Father sees it. The Grand Hotel, Malahide, c. 1910. The hotel has had several owners. It was built by James Fagan of Feltrim in 1835 and was then called the Royal Hotel. However, it was renamed the Grand Hotel, when it was purchased by H. Bethwell in 1897. The next owner of note was Dr. John Colohan, who bought the hotel in 1911 for £10,000. He had a liking for pink gin and decided to paint it pink. The hotel became well known to Dubliners as the ‘Pink Hotel’. Dr. Colohan was also a motoring enthusiast and he is said to have brought the first petrol car, a Benz Comfortable, to Ireland in November 1896. He sold the hotel for £17,000 in 1918. Following this, under a number of owners, the hotel’s trade diminished. Fortunately, the Grand was reconstructed and modernised in 1955 and today is a thriving hotel with an international reputation.
