Frances Scarborough andher family were heartbrokenwhen their 11-year-old terrier,Fibi, went missing from her par-ents’ home on Donore Avenue,Dublin 8, last August.

Fibi went missing when shewent on one of her regular‘wanders’ around the area. Thefamily searched for days andput up posters but by the timethey learned she had beenfound and brought to the poundshe had already been rehomed.

Unable to locate the newowners the family embarked ona campaign to trace Fibi andbring her back. They put upposters, started a Facebook pageand contacted Southside Peopleto see if their local newspapercould help.

Southside People ran a storyabout Fibi and Frances posted itonto the Facebook page.

Eventually their prayers wereanswered when they were con-tacted by a woman from Co Ty-rone.

“She got in touch with usand told us she’d read the storyand thought she had the dogand wanted to give her back,”Frances said.

Frances sent pictures of Fibiwith the family to the womanwho confirmed that the dog she

had was definitely their missingpet.

“She could see that we werea family who loved Fibi andthat we’d just lost her throughan unfortunate chain ofevents,” Frances continued.

The family arranged to col-lect Fibi and drove up to Co Ty-rone to collect her. They wereanxious about how the dogmight react but any concernsthat Fibi had forgotten themwere soon dispelled.

“We were afraid she would-n’t want to come back to us butshe just ran to me as soon shesaw me and when my mamcalled her she got very excited,”Frances said. “She hadn’t seenmy dad and when he whistledto her from behind she just wenttotally nuts.

“Fibi definitely knew whatwas after happening to her, thepoor thing. Her ears went upevery time she heard my dadspeaking in the car all the wayback to Dublin. It’s amazing. Itwas breaking my heart that shemight think we had abandonedher.

“You’d know she missed thefamily but she was very welllooked after. I was dreadingcoming up to Christmas be-cause I knew it would put adampener on things becauseeverybody would be talkingabout it.”

Frances and her family aregrateful to the woman who re-turned Fibi and looked after herduring her four month adven-ture.

“Fibi’s lucky to be alive,”

Frances told Northside People “Iknew she was too old to beadopted by a family so I had afeeling she might have ended upwith somebody who takes dogsin. This lady took Fibi in so shewouldn’t be put down becauseshe loves that type of dog.

“We’ve been very lucky. That lady was very kind so fairplay to her.”

Frances and her family aredetermined never to lose Fibiagain and have taken steps toensure her safe return if sheever wanders again by havingher microchipped.

“We were so naïve becausenothing like this had ever hap-pened us before,” Frances ex-plained. “I do understand thatthe pounds are overrun and I’msure it is a very difficult job butwe didn’t even have a clue to goup there first.

“I think lots of people don’treally know what to do whenthey lose a pet, but I’m an ex-pert on it at this stage.”

The family are naturally de-lighted to have Fibi home forChristmas but they haven’t for-gotten all those who supportedthem during their campaign.

“We want to thank every-body who helped, especiallyDuncan Smith (Labour Partyrepresentative for Meakstown-Charestown), Denise and Ais-ling from Donore Credit Unionand our great neighbours, Kath-leen O'Sullivan and AudreyComerford, who all gave theirtime and support to help getFibi home,” said Frances.

Local success adds to positive signs on the jobs front TAOISEACH Enda Kenny was in Tallaght recentlywhere he attended the official opening of the headquar-ters of one of the world’s leading providers of fleet man-agement solutions for small and medium-sizedbusinesses.

A total of 24 new jobs werecreated when Fleetmatics in-creased its head count by closeto 50 per cent at its Southsidehub.

The company also plans to

employ a further two high-endsoftware developers and threedatabase developers in theshort-term.

This latest good news onthe local jobs front follows the

announcement that 29 newjobs are being created byBrandtone, a mobile marketingcompany based in the SouthDocklands area.

Brandtone is investing e2million in a major research anddevelopment programme withsignificant support from theDepartment of Jobs, Enter-prise and Innovation throughEnterprise Ireland.

Meanwhile, the famousDonnybrook Fair opened thedoors of its fifth fine food storerecently in their new Dublin 2setting.

Located at Gallery Quay,Grand Canal Square, the open-ing of the 1,300sqm store led tothe creation of a further 20new jobs.

These local successes ap-pear to bear out recent figuresthat the private sector hasbeen creating an average of1,200 jobs per week for thepast year.

CSO statistics also showthat 22,500 jobs have beenadded across the country in thepast three months.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny TDsaid that creating better condi-tions for new jobs was the Gov-ernment’s top priority.

“I am confident that theimplementation of the ActionPlan for Jobs has contributedto Ireland’s rising reputation asa location for enterprise and in-vestment,” he said.

“Over 1,000 new jobs arebeing created every week and

there are positive signs thatbusiness confidence is rising.

“There is still much morewe have to do before we canclaim that Ireland is the bestsmall country in the world forbusiness. We will continue todeliver on the reforms neces-sary to reduce business costsand to make Ireland morecompetitive.”

FG candidate Jason O’-Callaghan said the figureswere extremely encouraging.

“They clearly show thatthe Government’s Action Planfor Jobs is working,” he said.“What is particularly hearten-ing is that as well as new jobscoming on stream, the rate ofjob creation is also acceleratingsharply.”

Fine Gael Dublin SouthCentral TD, Catherine Byrne, welcomed the latest Live Reg-ister figures from the CentralStatistics Office (CSO), whichshow that the number of peo-ple out of work in the Dublinarea had dropped by 5,398over the last 12 months.

“These are yet more en-couraging figures from the

Live Register, which show thatthe national unemploymentrate has fallen for the 17thmonth in a row,” she said.

“While this rate remainstoo high, these figures clearlyshow that the downward trendin unemployment figures iswell established, as more andmore people get back towork.”

Monkstown Pharmacy is

in HavenIRELAND’S only co-operative pharmacy brand hasmade its debut launch at Monkstown Pharmacy onOliver Plunkett Road in Dun Laoghaire.

Monkstown Pharmacyhas introduced health serv-ices, offers, promotions and avibrant new store to mark thelaunch of Haven.

Haven Pharmacy is a newbrand that was created by 45members of the cooperativegroup that has over 100 phar-macists and 300 staff in com-munity pharmacies all overIreland.

Monkstown Pharmacy

has been a member of thegroup for the last five years.

It will be one of the firstpharmacies to rebrand insideand out and offer a new anddiverse range of products, services, health screenings, of-fers and a unique and interac-tive store experience for thelocal community.

“We’ve been together as ahighly successful co-operativegroup for a number of years

now, sharing knowledge, bestpractice, latest thinking andbuying power,” said pharma-cist Roma O’Loughlin.

“It’s been working so wellthat we started to look at waysof how we could offer the ben-efits of our knowledge and ex-pertise to consumers - andcreate a brand that they couldconsistently recognise no mat-ter where they were in thecountry.

“Our first step was to findout what today’s consumerswant by starting with our owncustomers.”

The launch of HavenPharmacy has been developedin response to research con-ducted by Behaviours and At-titudes in February 2011 andmore recently in September2013 that found consumerswere looking for a differenttype of pharmacy experience.

The research showed thatin a market of increased selfcare and self medication therelationship between the con-sumer and the pharmacist isbecoming even more impor-tant.

Research also showed thatcommunity pharmacists areregarded as the most accessi-ble healthcare experts in pri-mary care –which bodes wellfor Haven Pharmacy which isalready the leading commu-nity pharmacy group in Ire-land.

The Haven Pharmacybrand roll-out will continueacross the country over thenext couple of months witheach of the 100 pharmacistsmanaging the rebranding andchange.

Southsiders show their girl power at World ChampionshipsTWO Southside ladies have returned from the Power-lifting World Championships in Glasgow having donetheir communities proud.

French woman ArletteBomahou, who now lives inSandyford, came back from thechampionship with a Worldchampion title.

The Powerlifting WorldChampionships that are organ-ised by the World Drug FreePowerlifting Federation tookplace in Scotstoun Stadium.

A total of 160 lifters fromall over the world competed inthe exciting event.

The Irish came first with a

team of 54 lifters including 41men and 13 ladies. They beatthe British, American, Cana-dian and French teams whohad very strong lifters.

Each competitor has toqualify in national and Euro-pean championships in order tocompete in the world event.

With 300 members all overIreland, the Irish Drug FreePowerlifting Association

(IDFPA) was established in1997 to promote the sport.

The association has a strictdrug free policy and lifters aresubject to tests both in and outof competition.

Those who fail to take orfail a test are subject to a lifeban from the organisation.

The sport of powerliftingcomprises three lifts: the BackSquat, Bench Press and Dead-lift.

Powerlifting competitionsmay be comprised of one, twoor all three of the lifting disci-plines.

Athletes are categorised by

sex, age and bodyweight. Eachcompetitor is allowed three at-tempts at each lift, the best liftin each discipline being addedto their total.

The lifter with the highesttotal is the winner. In caseswhere two or more liftersachieve the same total, the per-son with the lightest body-weight wins.

Arlette, who is originallyfrom Togo, has been part of theIDFPA since August.

The 38-year-old decided torepresent the Irish team and re-ceived her first World title inthe 90kg + category (Back

Squat 102.5, Bench Press 62.5 ,Deadlift 160kg).

“If it was not for my per-sonal trainer, Adrian Quinn, Iwould never have tried to com-pete in powerlifting,” she said.“I have trained for years in thegym but never competed before.

“The whole adventurestarted in August this year. I fellin love with this sport after myfirst competition. I have hadgreat support from my othertrainer Conor Sinott since June.

“He saw potential in me thatI didn’t think I had. Myboyfriend Ciaran supported meover all that time. I would wakeup at 5am in the morning to goto the gym.

“At the time I was not train-ing for any competition but healways encouraged me to keepworking out hard. Getting myfirst world champion title wasthe cherry on top. The atmos-phere was electric, with amaz-ing people and it was anamazing experience with every-one cheering for one another.

“I feel blessed and lucky tohave been part of this event.’’

Powerlifting in Ireland has

become increasingly popular, es-pecially among women.

The IDFPA has doubled thenumber of female lifters thisyear and 40 of their 400 mem-bers are women.

The incredible performanceof the Irish team during theWorld Championship in Glas-gow attracted a high number ofnew joiners.

Another winner was LinhDuy Nguyen, who set a worldrecord.

Linh, a mum of two fromSouth Dublin also travelled toGlasgow to the World DrugFree Powerlifting Federation(WDFPF) World Champi-onships as part of the Irish na-tional team.

“I was really nervous but itwas exciting going into the com-petition as it was my first timebeing on such a big stage, thestandard was very high,” saidLinh.

Linh qualified as gym in-structor in May and is currentlytraining to be a personal trainerat Crumlin College of FurtherEducation.

She competes in the -55.5kg

weight class, and put on a verystrong performance to win Goldfor Ireland and in the process seta new World Record Squat of115.5kg at 55kg body weight.

“I was over the moon whenI hit the squat, it’s the culmina-tion of months of hard workand it all paid off in that mo-ment,” she added.

Having taking up the sportjust over eight months agounder the watch of her coachJay Farrant of the the Abs Gymin Glasnevin, Linh has achieveda huge amount in a short periodof time and is currently thehighest ranked female power-lifter in Ireland.

The next major competi-tion for Linh is the Irish DrugFree Powerlifiting Association(IDFPA) National single liftchampionships that will takeplace in Dublin in February.

Gardai step up roadsafety campaign

GARDAI mounted a high profile road check in Dublinlast week to highlight the message of road safety thisChristmas.

As part of their ChristmasEnforcement campaign,  theDublin Metropolitan Region(DMR)  Traffic Corps carriedout a high visibility operationon the busy M1 motorway onWednesday to increase aware-ness of fatal and serious injuryroad traffic collisions.

Within the DMR a total of18 lives have been lost in fatalroad traffic collisions so far in2013, an increase of eight onthis date last year.

The policing operationspecifically targetted a numberof road traffic offences includ-ing impaired driving, speeding, lane discipline and breaches ofthe Road Traffic Act with aview to detecting and deterring

inappropriate driver behaviour.“In addition to the road

traffic aspect, we know thatcriminal gangs use the motor-way network to travel aroundthe country,” a Garda state-ment noted last week.

“High visibility operationssuch as this on the M1 will in-crease over the coming weeks.By policing motorway routesleading to and from high resi-dential areas, we will be deny-ing criminals unchallenged useof the motorway network.”

Assistant CommissionerJohn Twomey, speaking at thecheckpoint on the M1 Motor-way, added: “The tragic fact isthat 177 people won’t get theopportunity to sit down and

enjoy the Christmas festivitieswith family and friends thisyear.

“The vast majority of fatalroad traffic incidents arecaused by human error, some-thing that someone does orfails to do. Last month alone,677 drivers were arrested fordriving under the influence ofan intoxicant.

“In this day and age it is to-tally unacceptable that 677people made that decision todrink and drive.”

Commissioner Twomeycontinued: “I am here, not onlyas head of the Traffic Corpsbut also as a daily road user, totell you that this is simply notacceptable.

“To date in 2013 over400,000 drivers have beenbreath tested and whilst thevast majority are compliantand fit to drive, over 7,200 driv-ers didn’t heed our message.

“We all play a part in mak-ing the roads safer and ulti-mately our communities safer. We want everyone to enjoy thefestive season, however, wewant to also remind peoplethat An Garda Síochána willbe out in force.

“The message simply isnever ever drink and drive.”

As well as engaging in en-forcement activity, the gardaiwere focusing on several othersafety initiatives targetting vul-nerable road users, that in-cluded the distribution ofnearly 30,000 items of RSA hiviz material to pedestrians andcyclists nationwide.

“We specifically ask allpedestrians to make sure theyare visible when out walking, especially in rural or poorlylit areas,” CommissionerTwomey said.

“Furthermore, when outsocialising, plan a safe way toget home and make sure youare fit to walk if you have con-sumed alcohol.

“Drivers also need to beextra vigilant and watch out forpedestrians.”

The gardai’s Christmas en-forcement campaign will alsosee an increase in the numberof Mandatory Alcohol Testing(MAT) checkpoints performed, and they will be carried out ona targeted, 24/7 basis.

Speeding enforcement bythe GoSafe safety camera vanswill also increase to 7,375hours of monitoring over themonth of December.

DUBLIN All-Star and former GAAFootballer of the Year, Alan Brogan,is urging Dubs to get involved inRunLastMan.com, a revolutionarynew Irish website that allows clubsand charities to raise funds.

Last man standing competitions, whereentrants pick a different team to win eachweek until only one person is left and de-clared the winner, are a primary fundraising

tool for many club public relations andcharity officers around the country.

Brogan, who launched the site at hishome club in Dublin, St Oliver Plunkett’s,said: “I’m delighted to be involved at thelaunch of RunLastMan.com. The websiteis incredibly simple and easy to use, costsclubs nothing to register and is completelyrisk free. It will save clubs a huge amount oftime and will be a very effective way of rais-ing much needed funds.”

PARENTS, teachers, students, industry and academics arebeing asked for their views on how best to make use of com-puters and technology in the classroom.

Minister for Education and Skills, Ruairí Quinn, recentlylaunched the public consultation phase of the development ofa new Digital Strategy for Schools.

The public consultations phase will feed into the develop-ment of a new strategy on the use of ICT in teaching andlearning in primary and post primary schools.

This follows on from a comprehensive online survey ofprincipals and teachers which took place earlier in the year.

The findings from the survey, the public consultationprocess and focus groups to be held next year will together in-form the new strategy.

Minister Quinn said the potential for using technology inthe classroom is huge.

“But we need to be asking ourselves important policy ques-tions like what is the actual benefit we expect from using tech-nology in schools and how do we measure progress? How canwe further embed ICT seamlessly across all curricula?”

Minister Quinn said there were already some excellent ex-amples of schools that were using technology to innovate inthe classroom.

“Our challenge now is to ensure that every child in everyschool has the same opportunities to engage with technologyacross all aspects of the curriculum,” he added.

The closing date for submissions is January 31 2014. Sub-missions can be made via www.education.gov.ie.

One of the most iconic sou-venirs from that year was thePremier Dairies MillenniumMilk Bottle and doorstep milk-men service, MyMilkman.ie,has reproduced the bottle tocommemorate the event.

The company also commis-sioned a survey among Dublin-ers over the age of 35 to find outwhat they remembered from theMillennium of ’88, and whatthey missed about Dublin fromthat time.

But let’s get the things wedon’t miss out of the way first. The top three in that list weresmog, former Taoiseach CharlieHaughey and “waiting an hourfor a bus.”

The people we do associatepositively with the ‘80s wereactor Colm Meaney (19 percent) and singer, song writer andpolitical activist Bob Geldof (16per cent) who were voted as ourfavourite living Dubliners whowere famous back them.

The popular pair beat Bren-dan Grace, Gabriel Byrne,Kevin Moran and Bono to thetop spot. Actor Gabriel Byrnewas voted favourite among onein 10 Dublin women over theage of 35.

In entertainment, Dublinersvoted Ian Dempsey as favouriteliving DJ or TV personality

from 1988. He was followedclosely by Gay Byrne, DaveFanning and Ray Darcy.

Dubliners also called for thereturn of Dermot Morgan’ssatirical radio sketch show,Scrap Saturday, while other ‘80sfavourites included StrumpetCity and rural soap, Glenroe.

According to Dubs, ThePink Elephant Nightclub wasthe No 1 place to be seen inDublin in 1988, and they’d liketo see it re-open, along withmusic venue McGonagles.

The Premier Milk Millen-nium Bottle came out on top asone of Dublin’s best memoriesfrom 1988. To celebrate, replicasof the much sought after retrobottle will be delivered todoorstep customers by milkmenacross the city from this week.

Amanda Ryan from PremierMilk said: “We were amazed tofind out that three out of fourDubliners don’t know that milk-men still exist. We also discov-ered that many Dubliners havekept their original Millenniummilk bottle as an heirloom orthey still use it as an ornamentor vase.

“We’re delighted that boththe milkman and the commem-orative bottle are making acomeback!”

• Carmencita Hederman wasDublin’s Lord Mayor in thefirst half of the Millenniumyear, while Ben Briscoe tookover in the second half.• As part of the festivities, asculpture of Gulliver was sentfloating down the River Liffey.• In 1988, the Republic of Ireland soccer team celebratedtheir most historic win in 60years. They beat Englandone-nil in the European Football Championships inStuttgart, Germany.• Sculptor Eamonn Dohertydesigned the Anna Livia, affectionately christened byDubliners as the ‘Floozie inthe Jacuzzi’. It was commissioned by business-man Michael Smurfit.• The Molly Malone statue onGrafton Street was unveiledby Lord Mayor Ben Briscoe.• Stephen’s Green ShoppingCentre was officially opened.• U2 released Rattle andHum. • The 1988 Eurovision SongContest was hosted in Dublinfor the third time.• In January, the Pogues featuring Kirsty MacCollreached No 1 in the chartswith Fairytale of New York.• In June, The Boys in Greensung by the Republic of Ire-land Soccer Squad sat at thetop of the charts for fourweeks.

Milk bottles spark Millennium memories

IT’S hard to believe but this time 25 years ago, back in1988, Dubliners were celebrating the city’s Millennium.

● Second-generation milkman Jack Kenealy, who delivers to Drum-condra and Glasnevin with MyMilkman.ie, is pictured with Dublinmodels Michelle McGrath and Sarah Morrissey to mark the come-back of the doorstep milkman service and celebrate the 25th an-niversary of Dublin’s Millennium in 1988.

Do you remember..?Despite controversy

around the exact historicaldate, the Millennium waswidely celebrated in 1988 andwas a welcome boost to thecapital.

As well as the PremierDairies Millennium Bottle, acommemorative Millennium

50p coin was also minted. Itwas the first decimal coin tofeature words on it. The word‘Dublin’ appeared in Romanscript and ‘Áth Cliath’ inGaelic script.

Here’s a few more 1988 memories:

Dublin’s Millennium celebrations were the brainchildof Dublin City Manager, Frank Feely, who wanted tobring back a sense of pride and confidence in the city

● Replica Premier Dairies Millennium milk bottles from 1988 arebeing delivered to MyMilkman.ie customers this week.

While commuters and travellers maywelcome or resent the enforced break inconnectivity, the days of being unavail-able to take calls on flights are num-bered.

The first crack in the final phone-freefrontier of airspace came this week whenthe EU's Aviation Safety Agency up-dated its guidelines on the use of mobilesand other portable electronic devices onplanes. They said it's now safe to usethese devices even during taxiing, take-off and landing, as long as they stay inflight mode.

Fine Gael MEP Jim Higgins wel-comed the move, describing the old rulesas “a bit nonsensical”.

“Few people really believed that play-ing music on your phone or iPad as itwas taking off was going to cause theplane to crash. The new guidelines allowyou to use your personal electronic de-vices from gate to gate, as long as theyare not on transmitting mode,” he said.

Labour MEP Phil Prendergast alsopraised the new safety guidelines, whichshe said acknowledged the need for fre-quent and business travellers to stay con-nected in the air.

“Hello, I'm on the plane!” EUconsiders in-flight phone calls

PRESSURE is growing on the Govern-ment to ratify a key international conven-tion and ensure better protection for anestimated 10,000 domestic workers in Ire-land, half of whom are migrants.

It follows a vote by the European Par-liament calling on all member states to signup to the International Labour Organisa-tion convention, setting out basic workingrights for those who work in family homes.

A recent survey by the Domestic Work-ers Action Group in Ireland uncovered alitany of abuses, including people who hadto work long hours, seven days a week, with no holidays, social security, contracts,or pay slips.

Speaking from Strasbourg, LabourMEP Emer Costello said the vote by MEPshas major implications for domestic work-ers, some of whom labour under unaccept-able working conditions.

“I have heard from people whose em-ployers have threatened to withdraw theirpermits if they don't agree to onerous con-ditions,” said Ms Costello, who has writtento Minister for Jobs Richard Bruton askinghim to ratify the convention early in thenew year.

If Ireland does ratify, the conventionwill provide domestic workers with guaran-teed rights, including the right to a contract, payslips, social security and annual leave.

Irish MEP secures continuedfunding for redundant workersEU AIDAID for people who have lost theirjobs through the effects of globalisationis to be maintained for another sevenyears, thanks to the efforts of Irish MEPMarian Harkin.

The Independent MEP spearheaded acampaign to retain the European Globali-sation Fund until 2020, although theamount of money available will be cutfrom e3 billion to just over e100 million. However, Ms Harkin added a new clauseenabling the fund to be available to abroader range of workers, including tem-porary agency workers and the self-em-ployed.

Another new aspect is that memberstates will be allowed to apply for fundingfor young unemployed people, in regionswith high youth unemployment. Speakingafter her report won the support of a largemajority at the European Parliament, Ms

Harkin said she was pleased to have playeda leading role in ensuring the continuationof the fund.

“It's not a panacea for all our ills, butat least it's an opportunity to help workersretrain, upskill or start their own busi-nesses,” she said.

Ireland has made seven successful ap-plications to the fund, including for work-ers at Dell, Waterford Glass, SR Technicsand Talk Talk, accessing a total of over e67million. Workers who benefited got aver-age amounts of aid ranging betweene2,500 and e9,000 each.

The funding can be triggered wherethere are 500 or more redundancies in agiven sector over a nine-month period. However, that threshold is not required ifit's established that job losses have had asignificant adverse affect on employmentin a specific area.

Cruising in a passenger plane at 18,000 metres above sea-level remains, unlike allother forms of public transport, a phone-free experience.

The real changes, however, will be an-nounced next year, when the EU will ex-amine how to connect to networks onboard, in order to text and make calls.

Speaking from Brussels, Ms Prender-gast said this would be the best way to ac-

commodate our increasingly mobileworkforce and boost productivity. But shewarned there should be some restrictionsso that calls are only allowed on selectedflights.

“I wouldn't like to think we would allbe on planes shouting and roaring, you'rein a confined space after all,” she said.

● Labour MEP Phil Pren-dergast praised the newsafety guidelines.

After you've sortedthrough your personal be-longings you might find thatthere isn’t really enoughstuff to create a personal feelto the home.

Maybe your friends orfamily might have someitems that reflect somethingabout you that they’d be

willing to donate to thecause.

You can take your time inbuilding up your accessorycollection. After all, thesearch will be half the fun.
