by Jack GleesonPeggy and Casper wentmissing from Peggy’s home onMount Tallant Avenue,Terenure on Tuesday September24. Peggy’s body was found fourdays later by a group of volun-teer searchers in a field besideIkea in Ballymun.

When her body was found, her loyal dog Casper was still be-side her, although tragically hepassed away just over two hoursafter being taken to a local vet tobe checked out.

Peggy, who was 67, sufferedfrom Alzheimer’s and had beenspotted wandering around thefilm set of Brendan O’Carroll’sMrs Brown’s Boys movie inGlasnevin at 3pm on the day ofher disappearance.

Over the course of the weekas the search grew, more andmore sightings were reported, mainly around the Finglas area.A massive search was coordi-nated from the DID Electricalstore at Clearwater ShoppingCentre in Finglas and the storytouched the hearts of thousandsof locals who joined in thesearch for Peggy and Casper.

Peggy’s son-in-law, DarraghLynch, said the walk was beingorganised to try and ensuresomething good came from thetragedy that touched the hearts

of so many.“The amount of cards and

letters sent to the family home, plus Facebook messages thatwere sent in the aftermath wasjust unbelievable,” he said.

“Because of that reactionthe family just felt that it was im-portant something good cameout of it, even if it prevents justone family going through whatwe went through.”

The walk will depart fromthe scout hall on Mount ArgusRoad near Mount Jerome Ceme-tery at midday on Saturday, De-cember 14, and roughly followthe path Peggy is believed tohave taken before ending up nearIkea in Ballymun.

Walkers will depart from thestarting point and head downClanbrassil Street towardsThomas Street, up through Phib-sboro and on to the FinglasRoad.

The route then passes Glas-nevin Cemetery and Finglas Vil-lage and up the North Road pastCharlestown Shopping Centrebefore finishing at IKEA, closeto the spot were Peggy wasfound.

“It is quite a distance butpeople are welcome to join thewalk at any point along the

route,” Darragh continued. “It’salmost 13 kilometres but we be-lieve Peggy could have walkedas much as 18 kilometres on theday she went missing becauseshe came back on herself severaltimes.

“She was very, very fit. Shewould have gone out for severalwalks a day but there was somedays she didn’t get past thedriveway because neighbourswould be walking by and she’dgladly stand there chatting.

“Peggy loved to chat andthat was some of the feedbackwe got from those that met heron the set of Mrs Brown’s Boysas it was being filmed in Glas-nevin. She hung around forquite a while and mingled withthe crew and actors.

“Peggy went out withCasper every day. She adoredhim and followed the sameroute, around the block andcame back home. But unfortu-nately whatever triggered thatday, she got lost.”

Jean Barry was one of hun-dreds of volunteers who tookpart in the search for Peggy andwas inspired to set up a Face-book page promoting the walk.

“I was sitting at home and Isaw on Facebook that the searchwas on and I just felt compelledto join in,” said Jean, who’soriginally from Glasnevin andnow lives in Bettystown. “Andthen after getting out and meet-ing the family, my heart justbroke for them. Being part of

the search was just unbelievable.“Just to see the amount of

people coming out was incredi-ble. I’ve never seen the likes of itbefore. It was very sad but it wasalso amazing to see the commu-nity coming together like that. Itwas great to see that people stillhave that bit of goodness in theirhearts and that they’d want tocome out and help.”

Peggy was cremated alongwith her beloved Casper’s ashesat Mount Jerome Crematoriumfollowing a funeral mass atMount Argus Church on Octo-ber 4.

The walk is the inauguralevent for the Peggy ManganFoundation. Participants arewelcome to bring their dogs andsponsorship cards are available.

The Peggy Mangan Foun-dation, while very much in itsinfancy, aims to raise aware-ness of missing persons andAlzheimer’s sufferers in Ire-land.

The family is working withthe Alzheimer’s Society of Ire-land and money raised from thisinaugural event will be used tofund a mobile outreach unit thatwill provide an information andsupport service to people withdementia and their families intheir local communities.

The cost of the unit is esti-mated to be e50,000 with an-nual running costs of e30,000.

The unit also gives staff andvolunteers an opportunity to in-crease awareness about demen-

tia and promote brain health. The unit will be brought toshopping centres, car parks, farmers’ markets and commu-nity halls to bring a service intothe heart of Irish communities.

“We want to use this service

to ensure that no-one faces de-mentia alone,” explained Dar-ragh. “This will be the firstundertaking from the PeggyMangan Foundation and whileit is a considerable amount ofmoney, we are confident of rais-

ing it through ongoing fundrais-ers.”

Travellers take on TV health challengeMEMBERS of a Travellers’ health group in Clondalkinare the stars of the latest episode of Doctors on Call thatgoes out on Wednesday, December 11.

Every week the RTE 1show features a communitychallenge that tackles varioushealth issues.

Episode 5 sees Paul Walshvisiting the Clondalkin Trav-ellers Health Group along withsuper nutritionist Patrick Hol-

ford to see if a low GL diet canreduce the risk of getting Type2 diabetes.

Under expert guidance theClondalkin Travellers Primary

Health Care team were chal-lenged to take on a low GL dietfor eight weeks to reduce theirchances of developing the con-dition.

The group were alreadyaware of the health implica-tions of developing diabetes astwo of them are currently livingwith the condition and manag-ing it with daily medication.

Before the challenge theirweight and body fat percentagewas measured. The resultsshowed that the ladies totalled

90 stones in weight, with 45 percent of their weight body fat.

Patrick said this increasedtheir chances of developing di-abetes by at least 10 times.

“One’s body fat percentageshould certainly be below 33per cent, which would equateto a fraction of the risk for dia-betes,” he said.

“Our challenge was forthem to lose one stone in eightweeks by following my low GLdiet. This alone would halvetheir current risk of diabetes.

“However, that means los-ing six stone and reducing theirbody fat in eight weeks by 24per cent.”

Patrick’s low GL diet chal-lenge included strength andaerobic exercises, while supple-menting glucomannan fibre, chromium and cinnamon witheach meal.

The Clondalkin TravellersHealth Care team also at-tended weekly ‘Zest4Life’ sup-port groups with nutritionaltherapist Anne Owens.

To see how they get on tunein on Wednesday, December11 at 8.30pm.

Patrick added: “If you havediabetes, and follow someguidelines, your need for med-ication may reduce.

“That’s why it’s vital tocheck with your doctor so theycan advise you accordingly.”

Patrick’s book ‘Say No toDiabetes’ explains how tophase in changes for Type-1and Type-2 diabetes.

Future is bright for St James GaelsSt James Gaels GAA Club will be celebrat-ing their 20th anniversary next year.

Despite this part of the clubonly being in existence for arelatively short period of time,it has enjoyed many greatachievements, as well as havingmuch needed laughs andfundraisers along the way.

The Crumlin based side

was set up back in July 1994 asthe result of the amalgamationof An Caisleán and GuinnessGAA Clubs.

The two clubs were strug-gling for numbers over a couple

of years before officers of bothteams agreed to join forces.

Eoin Darcy has been withthe club since it was set up. Hehad started playing with Guin-ness GAA Club through all agegroups before finishing up as aplayer with the Gaels.

Nowadays the former nom-inee for ‘Dublin’s Finest Sup-porter’ is taking charge of the

St James Gaels All-Stars acad-emy group which is for agesfive to eight.

Eoin, who spent a numberof years as Secretary of theclub, has now dropped downthe rails to assistant secretary.

“After a number of years, itwas time to take a step back tothe assistant job,” Eoin said, al-though he remains a big part of

the club and is always willing tolend a helping hand.

When he stopped playingwith the club, Eoin took up acoaching role starting with theyounger age groups before mov-ing up to the seniors for a yearor two.

Eoin is a proud and loyalclub man who was recently en-tered into a Vodafone run com-petition to acknowledge thosesupporters who are always therefor their club.

Eoin managed to make itinto the final five but unfortu-nately did not take home thee2,000 prize money for hisclub.

Despite this, Eoin is stillfully upbeat about the club andis keeping his love for the gamegoing through the St JamesGaels All-Stars setup.

Eoin also praised the cur-rent senior setup within theclub.

“We’ve a good mix of play-ers, both and experienced,” hesaid. “The seniors have hadgreat success with this mixturerecently upon winning the Jun-ior B Championship Final in2012.

“It’s great to be able to bringsuccess like that to a club that isstill trying to find its feet in asense.

Cycling opportunitiesfor Crumlin

DUBLIN City Council has been urged to exploreCrumlin’s potential to attract cycling tourism.

Gary Honer, the LabourParty’s local election candi-date, said cycling was generat-ing huge tourismopportunities as more andmore people took to theirbikes for leisure at the week-end.

“Cycling is taking off mas-sively in this country,” he said.“You only have to see the

number of charity cycles, andthe number of children takingpart in green schools initia-tives to see that locally and na-tionally we are taking to ourbikes more often and improv-ing our local environment.

“Cycling is also generatinghuge tourism opportunities asmore and more people aretaking to their bikes for leisure

at the weekend. This is some-thing that Crumlin and Kim-mage should capitalise on.

“The majority of thisfunding has been ring-fencedspecifically to improve thelocal transport environmentand I call on Dublin CityCouncil to engage with theDepartment of Transport,Tourism and Sport and theNational Transport Authorityto make Crumlin and Kim-mage a priority.”

DUBLIN showed its generosity with 12 Centra storeshosting Pink Walks this October for the Irish Cancer So-ciety’s Action Breast Cancer.

The Dublin Centra storesare on target to raise e11,000for the very worthy charitycause.

Over 600 people from allover the county pounded thepavements of towns, villagesand neighbourhoods demon-strating tremendous commu-nity spirit and real support ofBreast Cancer AwarenessMonth.

Centra’s Pink Walkstouched every part of the coun-try with almost 200 stores na-tionwide hosting their ownlocal walk and raising a stag-gering e225,000 along theway.

Over ten thousand partici-pants collectively walked anamazing 50,000 kilometresthrough villages and citiesaround Ireland to help drive

awareness of breast cancer andraise badly needed funds.

All funds raised will go di-rectly to the Irish Cancer Soci-ety, which helps provideinformation, advice and sup-port services for women withbreast cancer in Ireland.

Charity responds to homeless crisisTHE Peter McVerry Trust said the latest rough sleeperfigures for Dublin, released last week, offer a stark re-minder of the difficulties that many people endure andthe size of the challenge that those working in the sectorface in responding to the issue.

The charity was comment-ing on the latest rough sleepercount for winter 2013 inDublin, which showed 139people sleeping rough on No-vember 12.

The total is the highestnumber recorded since therough sleeper count began in2007.

This is compared to 94found sleeping rough in April.

A total of 80 per cent weremale and nearly 30 per centwere from outside Ireland.

Dublin Region Homeless

Executive director Cathal Mor-gan said there was a growingtrend of families being forcedto leave private rented accom-modation and moving intohomeless accommodation.

Responding to the figuresPat Doyle, CEO of PeterMcVerry Trust, said the factthat 139 people slept rough onNovember 12 was “disappoint-ing and unacceptable”.

“The figures clearly indi-

cate that the homeless situationremains extremely challengingbut it is a challenge that PeterMcVerry Trust is determinedto address,” he said.

“In anticipation of risingrough sleeper figures we havein recent weeks increased ca-pacity in our homeless accom-modation services.

“We have added 10 newbeds for homeless couples, thefirst such service within PeterMcVerry Trust, and haveadded a further 12 beds foryoung homeless people aged18-26.

“This means that we arenow providing accommoda-tion and housing to 265 indi-viduals every night in theDublin region.”

He added: “We are nowworking to increase the num-ber of emergency bed place-ments we provide as part of theCold Weather Initiative, whichassists those sleeping rough.

“We currently provide fourbeds on a nightly basis entirelyfrom our own resources but wehope to increase this signifi-cantly in the coming weeksbringing the overall capacitywithin our services to almost300 people per night.”

Mr Doyle said it was im-portant to recognise that inorder to tackle homelessnessthe charity needed to work inpartnership.

“The Peter McVerry Trustis committed to continuing ourwork with the Minister forHousing, Dublin RegionHomeless Executive, local au-thorities and other bodies inthe areas of housing, healthand education to address thestructural issues that lead tohomelessness and prevent peo-ple exiting homelessnessquickly,” he stressed.

HAVE you ever heard aboutthe Dublin woman who shotBenito Mussolini?

Well how about the Jewishgunslinger from Dublin, themurder on Ireland’s Eye or theDublin man who was eaten byhis own pig. Well now, thanks torenowned Dublin writer andhistorian Frank Hopkins and hisnew book, you can read allabout these and more long lost

and forgotten tales fromDublin’s darker, and funnier, side.

Ireland 366: A Story a Dayfrom Ireland’s Hidden Historyfeatures pieces from as early asthe 13th and as late as the mid-20th centuries. Each story issourced from newspapers andpublications of their day andHopkins’s book is a must forIrish history lovers, and a greatread for just about everyone

else.Hopkins delivers an episode

from Ireland's history for everysingle day of the year, includingFebruary 29 for those of apedantic nature. Some are sur-prising, some sensational (ordownright unpleasant) and oth-ers sad, but they are always fas-cinating.

With a journalistic eye for agood story and an ability toretell a story in a clear and un-

Dublin’s weird and wonderful historycomplicated fashion, Hopkins’sbook will no doubt find its wayinto many Christmas stockingslater this month.

Dubliners will love readingabout Jack Lanagan (March17); a bare-knuckle fighter fromBallybough who died on StPatrick’s Day 1846. Starting hiscareer at the tender age of 13when he fought and won a bouton the banks of the RoyalCanal, Lanagan went on tofight Tom Spring ‘Champion ofEngland and the CivilisedWorld’ in a fight that lasted anincredible 77 rounds. He was

defeated after failing to emergefor the 78th.

Hopkins’s book doesn’t justdeal with our recent history inthe press. It occasionally stepsinto the court records of bygonetimes, as on May 10, 1310 whenhe writes that a certain Richardle Noble stood trial for chasingRobert Markartan through thestreets of Palerstown with anaxe.

• Ireland 366: A Story a Day fromIreland’s Hidden History is avail-able from all good bookstorespriced at $19.99 (hardback).

Dublin band leads the way in fight against bullyingA DUBLIN band that is now based in Los Angeles haswritten a moving song about a man who attempted tocommit suicide by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge.

Friends Of Emmet havebeen writing, recording andtouring for the past three years.

Members Mark Leddy (vo-cals), Brian Lynam (guitar),Keith Geraghty (bass), TimBoland (guitar and keyboardsand Gary Sullivan (drums) areset to release their debut album

‘State Of Mind’ in March2014.

The album consists of 10songs and several have alreadybeen licensed to major TV dra-mas in the UK and the USAsuch as ‘Hollyoaks’ and ‘East-

the album ‘Coming Apart’ is atribute to Kevin Hines, authorof the book ‘Cracked Not Bro-ken’, who attempted to take hisown life at the age of 19 byjumping off the Golden GateBridge.

Hines is one of the few toever survive the suicide plungefrom 245 feet above the water.

After hearing about Kevin’s

story the band found them-selves inspired and wrote‘Coming Apart’.

Friends Of Emmet arenow trying to give the youngergeneration of Ireland hope.

“As we both know the statsof so many young people tak-ing their own lives is out ofcontrol and could be classed asan epidemic,” said Mark.

“We happened to write asong about a young man who

attempted a suicide jump fromthe Golden Gate Bridge butsurvived.

“We came across his storythrough the documentary TheBridge by Eric Steel. His storyis miraculous and inspiring.

“When we wrote our songComing Apart about Kevin wethen tracked him down and heappears in the video.

“Since then students inAmerica, Canada and Irelandhave compiled their ownvideos for the track callingthem YANA (You Are NeverAlone) messages.

“The students came to usasking for use of the song asthey want a change more thananyone.

“We work closely with Lor-raine Higgins, the Labour Sen-ator, and have just had an ideapassed by the Government thatfrom next September second-ary school homework journalsin Ireland will have printed onthe inside cover a 24-hour hourhelpline, logo and website ad-dress for suicide preventionand bullying.”

Mark added: “So manypeople from around the worldhave contacted us since, sayingthey wish their Government’swould implement the sameidea.

New Mini sets the PaceMy daughter liked the song

dentally we were driving thenew Mini Paceman at the time. Now the Paceman wasn’taround in the sixties, but theMini surely was.

Yes the Mini was hugelypopular with both males and fe-males in the sixties when it wasregarded as British as the RoyalFamily. The Beatles loved itand the car featured in theirfilm ‘Magical Mystery Tour.’Like many British-made prod-ucts the Mini also proved at-tractive for Irish drivers.

Now under the BMW um-brella, the Mini is still a world-wide brand, but you won’t seemany males driving one; it hasbecome associated more withfemale drivers, but Ian Fitzger-ald from Frank Keane's says hehas seen men drive them.BMW’s designers have experi-mented with the Mini designand to-date we have had theHatch, Clubman, Convertible,Countryman, Coupe andRoadster. The latest model tocarry the Mini badge is thePaceman, which is really a two-door coupe version of theCountryman.

I drove a blue version witha white roof and it was reallyattractive. But practicalityrather than looks seems to be● The Mini is still a worldwide brand

The interior is dominatedby a massive speedometer andvarious toggle switches. Thetop speed is given as 260 km/h,but I didn’t check to see if thatspeed was achievable. Eventhough it’s huge, the speedome-ter is off to the left of the driver

and difficult to see if you areconcentrating on the road. However, there is also a neatdigital read-out just above thesteering wheel, bang in the dri-ver’s line of vision. And youwill love the aircraft-style hand-brake; it would remind you ofa brake from a previous gener-ation, but it worked very well.

The car is set very low andmy daughter, who at 26 couldbe a possible mini buyer, saidshe found her own NissanMicra more spacious and didn’tlike the fact that the suspensionwas so close to the ground. Butfor those of us who were

around in the sixties we wouldhave been used to the low sus-pension. The boot is small andthere is no repair kit or sparewheel because like BMW cars, the Mini has run-flat tyres.

Q: Hi Neville, I am redecoratingthe two spare bedrooms in myhouse as they are very out-dated and quite dreary. I wantto do something different witheach but am working with atight budget.

Any recommendations youcan make would be greatly ap-preciated.

A: Redecorating separate roomsneed not be the expensive un-dertaking you may foresee.Working with the same paintcolours can still allow you tocreate different design looks foreach room.

Spare bedrooms need to beflexible spaces and suitable forany guest you may have stay-ing with you. For these reasons,my usual advice would be toselect gender-neutral coloursthat will allow you scope to en-hance the tone of the roomwith your selection of acces-sories.

As an alternative to whiteand cream base colours, try in-corporating soft and subtlegreys as a key wall colour togive a beautiful aura to anyspace.

Greys are among the keycolours for the year ahead.Crown’s Spotlight, Cloud Burstand Soft Shadow are all strikingcolours that blend seamlesslywith a wide variety of shades.

Ask Nevillein association with

Creating a different atmos-phere for each room will allowyou to match the personality ofyour guests to the most suit-able room and make their staycomfortable and enjoyable.

To create a bright and freshdesign, Crown’s Soft Linen isthe perfect colour to select andwill combine perfectly with thegrey base of your choosing.

If a darker colour choice ismore to your taste, Allianceand Pot Plant are both beauti-fully rich shades that will bringelegance to the space.

For something a little moreregal, Moonlight Bay is an im-peccable choice and will be anexemplary addition to thespace. Pairing this with con-temporary furniture pieces willensure a modern and androgy-nous feel for the room.

by Neville Knott

Spare the pennies andgo grey for 2014

To create an extremelycontemporary edge within thespace, Crown’s Up Beat is anexhilarating, energetic colourthat will leave your overnightguests in awe of your home.

Whichever colour route yougo down, it’s important thatyou choose colours you love.Although these are guestrooms, it’s your home and soit’s vital that they reflect yourtaste and incorporate elements

of your own personality.Feature walls are an ideal

way to bring colour to anyspace. In a bedroom, the wallbehind the bed is generallythe most natural feature wall. However, this will be depend-ent on the size and shape ofthe space.

Adding a runner aroundthe room is a great alternativeway to inject colour and per-sonality.

Utilising accessories is an-other ideal way to incorporatethe colours of your choice. Lay-ering throws and oversizedcushions on your guest bedwill bring an indulgent luxuryand comfort to the room. Com-bining slightly different shadesdrawing from the same colourpalette will add depth andcontrast to the room.

Finally, add photographsand prints to complete your

design to perfection. Happydecorating! • To receive regular updatesand design tips from Neville, log onto www.crownpaints.ie.

SPANISH 4 REAL LIFE

STRESSHow can we eliminate stress from our lives? We can’t. Stress is inescapable. To be alive

is to be under stress. However stress is notnecessarily bad. With too little we’d bebored; with too much we’d developemotional and physical disease. Stress is said to be one of the mostdestructive elements in people’s lives, butthat’s only a half-truth. The way we react tostress appears to be more important that thestress itself. So there is no point in talkingon how to get rid of stress in our lives. What’s more important is growing, thrivingand overcoming our limitations in the face ofstress, rather than being reduced to a state ofdullness or disease. When stress invades our space we deal withit by fight or flight; we either face it or avoidit. We have to stay and cope. Living in thisworld of not quite fight or flight, to many ofus carry around unresolved, chronic stressmuch of the time. With chronic stress the body and mind nevercompletely relax - the muscles are tense, energy is drained, and the body is fatigued,

more susceptible to ulcers, digestive troubles, high blood pressure, asthma, arthritis, colds, infection, heart disease, and prematureageing. This permanent web of alarm/resistance/ exhaustion can slowly rob one ofhealth and vitality and, ultimately life itself. Medicines or drugs, whether prescription inthe form of tranquillisers and sedatives orrecreational in the form of alcohol, cigarettes, marijuana, or cocaine, may temporarilyrelieve stress but not bring long lastingbenefits. The Osteopathic ApproachSpinal nerve stress (or osteopathic lesion) is adangerous stressor. Osteopathic lesions causedamage to our nervous and skeletal systems, fatiguing and weakening us both physicallyand emotionally. Our ability to deal with life’sstress is thus compromised, and this pavesthe way for sickness and disease. An osteopathic health care programme, byremoving vertebral lesions from our bodies, improves the function of our nervous systemand promotes better adaptation toenvironmental stress whether physical orpsychological. Osteopathic care also promotesrelaxation and self-awareness, thus assistingthe individual in the recognition and control

of stressful situations.
