Natural Gas business notes■ Move over Shell, another cracker plant is coming.Pittsburgh’s own Renewable Manufacturing Gateway (RMG) has signed a Letter of Engagement (LOE) with Aither Chemi-cals LLC (Aither). RMG and Aither have agreed to collabo-rate to finance and build a large petrochemical plant on Marcellus Shale using Aither’s ethane catalytic cracker technology. With an investment of $750 million over the next five years, the project is expected to create over 2000 construction jobs, 200 permanent direct production jobs, and many thousand indirect jobs in the Tri-State Region (Western Pennsylvania, Eastern Ohio, and Northern West Virginia). It is anticipated to generate $463 million in annual sales by 2016. ■ Chrysler’s Ram Truck Division begins building pickups powered by CNG. Chrysler’s heavy duty Ram 2500 4X4 Longbed thus became America’s factory built CNG pickup.

■ GMC, Chevrolet, Bi-Fuel Pickup Production Begins.Production of the 2013 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra 2500 HD bi-fuel pickup trucks is underway in Fort Wayne, Ind., and the pickups are available for order by fleet and retail customers through Chevrolet and GMC dealers. The Silverado HD and Sierra 2500 HD Vortec 6.0L V8 engine runs on gasoline or compressed natural gas (CNG) and seamlessly switches between the two fuels without affecting performance. The CNG and gasoline tanks have a combined range of 650 miles, the longest standard bi-fuel range of any original equipment automaker.

What’s Next After Drilling?

I often see the media statement “drilling is just the beginning”! Well, the beginning of what? Based on a couple of YouTube videos recently published by Range Resources, it appears to be the beginning of bringing back manufacturing to the US. However, the question remains: what follows drilling (aka hydraulic fracturing or fracking)? Therefore, my search for answers begins. So first, I “googled” “what’s next after drilling?” Among the top items on Google’s answer list are links with nothing to do with natural gas, oil or energy. So then, I grabbed my iphone 4s and asked Siri the same question. The poor thing quickly replies, “I’m not aware of any events about ‘drilling,’ Victor.” Oh well, I should have known her digital brainpower limitations… but at least she remembered my name! At the end of the day, I was happy to discover a couple of web sites dedicated to shale news and events:

www.themarcellusshale.com and www.theuticashale.com. There I was able to glean some relevant and up-to-date industry information. Also, I learned some of the procedures that are supposed to follow drilling, among them: subsurface sampling, site divestment, and site remediation.

ANsYs moves

ANSYS, a major software company located in South-pointe, plans to lease its new headquarters in Southpointe II. Located less than a mile from its current headquarters on Technology Drive, the new 186,000 square-foot facility is scheduled to be ready in the fourth quarter of 2014. The new ANSYS headquarters will be larger than its current 107,000 square-foot headquarters location, providing room for expan-sion and future growth. As part of the move, ANSYS will also relocate its employees from offices currently situated in Station Square in Pittsburgh. Over the years, ANSYS has grown from its roots in a Washington County farmhouse to a NASDAQ-listed world-wide organization providing innovative multiphysics simula-tion technologies that power some of the largest and most successful organizations’ research and development efforts. “Although ANSYS technology is being used by more than 40,000 companies around the globe, we’re proud to call southwestern Pennsylvania home,” said Jim Cashman, CEO

Ned Williams, President of the Montour Trail Council, and Dale Risker, President of The Southpointe Marcellus Shale Chamber announced a partnership focused on connecting the recreational Montour Trail to Southpointe in an exclusive video interview. (go to www.southpointechamber.com and click on Video TV News) The trail is a 50 mile course on the former Montour Railroad right-of-way. The Cecil Friend Group is responsible for this section. The trail is funded by the Federal Transportation Board, Pennsylvania State, Wash-ington County Tourism , Cecil Friends Group and Montour Trail Council. Canonsburg’s HiddenTreasures on Pike Street

The Southpointe Chamber is excited to partner with the Washington City Mission. Their vision is to provide food and shelter for the homeless by reaching out into the tri-state area. This Christian based non-profit organization focuses on help-ing the homeless, teaching them trades and family values, all while bringing stability to their lives through a support team headed by Dean Gartland. Dean has been President and CEO of this effective organization for over 4 years. These less fortunate individuals are provided with opportunities to become productive members of society by working in the recycling shop, kitchen, and with

housekeeping responsibilities. Those that can drive work with the truck fleet to pick up clothing, furniture, computers and other items donated by area families and local ministries. Do-nors benefit in two ways: by cleaning house and by discard-ing useful items; they are able to receive a tax write-off that would not normally be available to them. What better way to help your fellowmen while cleaning out that basement or office closet. City Mission cleans, reconditions, and recycles your items and resells them in one of the six outlet stores. Serendipity and You Years ago, as IT Director of Gimbels Department Store, I’ll always remember the comment made by our president at every marketing meeting, “I know we are wasting half of our advertising dollars…I just don’t know which half”. When it comes to personal contact and networking for leads, it’s about being at the right place at the right time. Eighteen years ago I moved to Southpointe, and moved into a home on the golf course. I visualized golfer’s cruising by in their carts, offer-ing them a cold beer, handshake and an exchange of business cards. That’s when I discovered golfers are not in the mood to network. Deals might be made on the golf course, but new leads are not. The same goes for club houses, restaurants and cars. Around this time I founded the Southpointe Chamber of Commerce, later to be branded the Southpointe Marcellus Shale Chamber. The mission is imbedded in the name –a group or organization creating business. Wikipedia defines a chamber is a form of business network, e.g., a local organi-zation of businesses whose goal is to further the interests of businesses. The Southpointe Chamber meets that definition and more. Each month we witness firsthand businesses making connec-tions at our monthly” high energy” network lunch. Let’s switch scenes to the Bahamas. I‘m sitting on the back deck of the Lady M (a motor yacht) with a friend and business associate, reminiscing about the past 20 years. My wife and I are invited each year to celebrate our long relation-ship. For days I searched back 20 years trying to remember how my friend and I first met. Finally I zeroed in on the mo-ment when we shook hands and exchanged business cards in what was another routine contacting event. Obviously oppor-tunity must meet preparedness as I followed up with a phone call and subsequent proposal for a telephone system for sale. Little did I realize the value of that 10 second exchange that would lead to years of business and meaningful friend-ship. Looking back I wonder what would have happened if I hadn’t attended that event or gone to one more network meeting. Lesson learned… 1. Attend all networking opportunities, small and large, regardless of their potential. 2. While attending, treat each contact as if it was your best opportunity of the day. 3. Follow up with emails, phone calls, etc. 4. Repeat steps #1, #2, and #3For our next event, go to southpointechamber.com and click on ‘event calendar’. Where is the chamber member list? Every day we get a phone call from either a member or non-member asking for the membership list. We have tried posting the member list in the past and found the information to be a misuse of marketing productivity.What can you do with the list?

At the chamber office, the first question asked is - how is Southpointe II and the Town Center coming along? We are pleased to announce that several new buildings have already sprung up. Estimated completion and move in time ranges from mid to Fall of 2013. Pictured below is the new Mylan Labs facility located on the round-about on Town Center Way. Progress is reported to be slightly ahead of schedule, thanks to the milder weather. This building will be a key landmark when approaching the Town Center entrance. Mylan Executive Chairman Robert J. Coury said: “Mylan’s global operations have experienced transformational and phe-nomenal growth over the last five years, and we expect this

growth will only continue in the years to come. In order to support our expanding business, we have more than doubled the number of employees located at our corporate headquar-ters in this same time frame, and we would expect hiring in the area to continue.” Coury continued: “I am very pleased to announce that we are committed to remain in the Pitts-burgh area, and in the Southpointe Office Park, in particular. Construction and design of the new facility will focus on the growing needs of our global business, our dedicated employ-ees as well as current and future environmental impact. Business networking in southpointe

It’s Monday morning at the office sales meeting. I look at this week’s agenda. I see a memo from my boss. He asks me to go to a lunch. I grimace at the thought of another boring lunch as I pick at my rubber chicken and drink my watered down coffee while listening to a droning speaker rattle on about the 48 reasons I screwed up on my retirement plans. Reluctantly I open my web browser to www.southpointe.net and click on the event calendar. To my surprise my palate shifts from bland chicken to fine Italian cuisine at the exclu-sive Bella Sera venue. Even though my boss is paying for it, I’m impressed with the all-inclusive $13 price…a pleasant surprise while other chambers charge $30 or more. I then notice the agenda …instead of having the 45 minute mono-logue…it features a short interview with an interesting host, followed by a 45 minute meet and greet networking session. Having been jaded by campaign lies, I can’t believe this is true. Is this a come-on? It’s the day of the luncheon and I pull into the parking lot, slightly irritated with the number of cars and with the dis-tance I have to walk. But then I realize…$$$$ signs spring from the roof of each car – a whole new potential for leads. I think, after all…I have never been able to get a lead from McDonalds. As I walk through the oak glass doors, I am surprised to see, instead of dropped ceiling, laminated desktops and fold-ing office chairs, a beautiful indoor Italian courtyard, com-plete with stone arches, two story fireplace, and an elegant dining room style layout complete with white tablecloths and centerpieces. As I listen to light jazz on the Bose sound system, I hear interruptions of laughter, handshaking introductions and a general feel of excitement in the air. I am greeted with instructions to head for the buffet and then take a seat. The reality of the legendary Jason Capps’ palatable Italian entrees are arrayed before me. Am I really seeing a fresh salad bar with hot steaming soup, three entrees, and…Oh Yes! A des-sert table?! I pinch myself wondering if I had a dyslexic moment and misread the price and it really is $31 instead of $13. I pick a table and sit down to be greeted by nine others with guest

tags reading names and companies they represent. I think “ this is good” ...I won’t have to worry about conversing with someone for 15 minutes only to find out that they are a local used car salesman, specializing in used Yugos, Oldsmobiles and Mercurys. As I took my first bite, I realized there was no line and that my name tag, registration and program were laid out in front of me. President Dale Risker immediately jumped into the program agenda by introducing Executive Director and Founder, Don Hodor, to announce the host. “Flood Lights,

camera, action!” started a humorous but informative inter-view being videotaped for YouTube and website viewing. The short 5 minute Larry King type segment was followed by an opening question opportunity that was punctuated with a series of prizes given away. The next 45 minutes felt like a dream (no, not a nightmare) as waves of individu-als walked up to me to shake hands and offer their business cards. I knew I made a dumb mistake (is there such a thing a smart mistake?) as I realize I only have 20 business cards (I was sure to soon run out of bullets). What I thought was 45 minutes was really two hours. How could I leave such an opportunity with high energy people behind? Later in retro-spect as I started my car, I glanced through my 40+ business cards I had collected from service and product energy related businesses. And then, a voice in my head rang out. Yes, Virginia…there is an effective chamber of commerce event and it’s called…the Southpointe Marcellus Shale Chamber of Commerce lunch.

The Southpointe Chamber has added new responsibility to Terry Caldwell. In addition to advertising sales of the mag-azine he has the new responsibility of Southpointe Total Media. This includes video production, e-mail campaigns, event sponsoring and web advertising. Terry stated, “We began to realize many comapnies are interested in a total pack-age when it comes to market exposure.

Pring addvertising alone is not enough. Business owners wanting to reach their market are realizing future clients are accessing more technology to find products and services. It is not uncommon for a future client to read an ad, pick up their smart phone and Google the company name or brand. It is at this point that a backup message should be in place. Video is considered the silent salesman working 24/7 to provide the perfect presentation when called upon. We work with businessmen to clarify the message to be conveyed, write an appropriate script and then record the video for YouTube and web site posting.” Leads are best generated when businesses target their demo-graphics by hosting an event such as a networking lunch or

Louis S. Falbo89 of Monessen, passed away peacefully

with his family at his side Wednesday, November 21, 2012, in Monongahela

Valley Hospital.

Lou was instrumental in starting the Washington County Industrial Develop-ment Authority. He was executive director for well over 10 years. Lou also served as executive director for Wash-ington Chamber of Commerce and Monessen Chamber of Commerce for 25 + years. I met Lou in 1985 and he immediately became my mentor. It was Lou Falbo who helped with the details that led to the Southpointe Chamber of Commerce. That was over 18 years ago. I can still hear Lou giving advise on how to organize the business plan that ultimately brought our chamber to 600 members, 3,500 linkedin contacts and quarterly magazine. Lou obviously didn’t have a hint about technology and social networking that turbo-charged our growth, but he did have a steady eye on details and how to keep ahead of the daily issues. He was a forecaster who showed us how to predict problem and bring quick resolu-tion. We quote him and think of him often.

Catering Services Fuels Shale Gas Workers

As remote shale gas drilling sites grow, so does the need to provide hot meals to these hard working crews. Amelia Ronco-ne recognized this niche business when she created Amelia’s Elegant Catering which, since its inception, has grown to provide meal service to 250 customers throughout Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia. Although it would be easier to provide reheatable, fast, comfort food like burgers and pizza, Amelia decided to develop a business model that incorporated her desire

to create a wholesome, nourishing menu.

The following was taken from the Tejas Gosai All Energy Now radio show:

Question: The name of your company, Amelia’s Elegant Catering, is somewhat ironic since a large part of your busi-ness is literally serving food at these gas well sites which one typically doesn’t picture as ‘elegant’.

Amelia:How did I know you were going to say that? I hear the same thing frequently from many people and that is where my company is more than what meets the eye. We are not just serving to the crews in the gas field. We also are doing many corporate events, weddings and special occasions. You have to remember that many of these gas companies are holding important shareholder meetings or company affairs in a more upscale setting. We are increasingly getting more of those types of jobs because of our visibility in the field. We also contract a lot of corporate luncheons that are small, board meetings, safety meetings from the companies,

Question: Do you serve meals every day to the work crews or is there a set schedule?

Amelia:On the frack side of the business, crews are interested in getting food every day for the various shifts. On the drilling side there are about 20-25 people out there per location and from what I’ve gathered, they don’t give their employees a per diem, so we only cater for them once or twice a month. Often a company will reward their employees, say, for rec-ognition of a superior safety record or exceeding production quotas, and we’ll be hired to come in and do a full barbeque for the guys. Food is a great reward because these tireless,

hard working guys can see, taste and smell the well-deserved reward!

Question: Now let’s talk about your menu. What kinds of meals do you prepare?

Amelia:Our menu is fairly simple yet delectable and we happen to do a lot of Italian dishes. Of course the guys love barbecue chicken, ribs, rib-eye steaks and sandwiches but they want hearty side dishes as well. Salads, pasta dishes and potatoes are favorites with the crews. These are side dishes that taste good and are filling. Many of these workers are big, brawny guys who have huge appetites especially given the labor-intensive, calorie-burning work done at a well site. My chal-lenge is to provide this type of food but I also like to make it healthy for them so they stay big, brawny and strong.

Question: What are some of the particular and unique chal-lenges you face in running a catering operation like you do?

Amelia:One of the biggest challenges is to be consistent in providing hot, quality food to our customers. Also, simply trying to find the physical location of these well sites can be very difficult. Often times I’m telling my delivery girls to go down a dirt road and turn left where the red tape is on the fence post. Of course bad weather can also be an impediment, but we deal with it.

Question: Do you ever encounter the negative side of being a woman in a typically male dominated business?

Amelia: Men tend to look at me cautiously with my burning drive to change this “good old boys club” atmosphere. I believe in equal opportunity and my hope is that more women will move into this particular arena with products and services. Local Company Scores Big in Gas / Oil Industry

When Xtreme Car & Truck Accessories in Bridgeville opened 36 years ago, the owner never expected how his business would grow due to a boom in a developing local industry. Today Mike Chalabie sells and installs parts and ac-cessories for other companies in Allegheny, Washington and surrounding Counties, many of these businesses working in the Marcellus Shale industry. But Xtreme Truck is a member of a much larger network of truck parts distributors. Mike recently shipped 3 tractor trailers, loaded with bumpers, running boards and other parts, to Philadelphia. Because of the large order, it took 3 months to collect all the parts ordered from other areas of the country before he could make his shipment. In addition to Xtreme Car & Truck’s success the South Fayette Sunoco, right next door to his parts store has also experienced growth. Commenting on the gas station sales, Mike said because of the natural gas industry,” the diesel sales are up 30% over last year this time”. And because of his commitment to local businesses, he has developed a strong loyalty among his Marcellus Shale customers. “I don’t know any other way to do business. We’re here to help them”, stated Mike. More recently, Mike’s Xtreme Car & Truck business was propelled by the Marcellus Shale industry into GSA certifica-tion. This government program, which took Mike 1 ½ years to complete and qualify for, now certifies him to provide his services to government contractors, opening a new stream of revenue for his business. DEP Secretary: Pennsylvania continues to benefit from

Marcellus Shale Environmental, Political | November 27, 2012 by TMS Staff From Penn Live/by Mike Krancer & Patrick Henderson. It is now unanimous: America’s potential domestic energy production is off the charts and Pennsylvania is the sweet spot. The International Energy Agency just issued its land-mark annual World Energy Outlook report, forecasting that the United States will pass Saudi Arabia in energy production and that North America will be at the forefront of a sweeping transformation in oil and gas production that will affect the entire world. This comes on the heels of reports from Standard & Poor’s and ITG showing that the amount of recoverable gas in the Marcellus Shale play might be much greater than previous government estimates. This is good news. With Pennsylvania as the centerpiece, real American energy security and a real force in American job growth are available to us now — if we continue to make the right decisions to obtain and use what we have. Studies confirm that Pennsylvania’s Marcellus Shale for-mation is the global superstar of natural gas formations and is a key driver in true American energy independence. Marcel-lus Shale gas will help make Pennsylvania the energy capital of the nation and spark the rebirth of our petrochemical and manufacturing base. Production from Marcellus wells is exceeding expecta-tions and some of the wells are among the most productive in the world. We already have 240,000 jobs related to our oil and natural gas extraction activities. When it comes to production numbers, Standard & Poor’s own words confirm that this is a “mere drop in the bucket” of the Marcellus’ full potential. Pennsylvania oversees this development responsibly under its effective oversight and comprehensive set of laws and regulations. Through Act 13, Gov. Tom Corbett and the Legislature have not only enhanced environmental protection standards but also put in place a per-well impact fee with an initial distribution of $204 million to Pennsylvania munici-palities and commonwealth agencies. From encouraging wastewater recycling to one of the most progressive hydraulic fracturing fluid disclosure laws in the nation, the state’s oil and gas program assures responsible, protective development of natural gas.
