thought their Savior had died. That day, sorrow and grieving gave way to joy and

celebration. Jesus was ALIVE! That hope and excitement continues to live in Christians

the same. While our celebrations may include Easter egg hunts for the children and

breakfast, the focus is still on our Savior who rose from the dead that first Easter

Southminster Presbyterian Members,

Thank you for the many lovely cards I received from you on my 100th birthday. They were so pretty and I enjoyed them so much.

God Bless All of You.

Much Love, Maxine Owens

Fishin’ for Crosslines The Peacemaking group is responding to the request from Crosslines asking churches to collect canned protein during Lent and donate it to Crosslines.

SO, the fishing boat is out in the Narthex. Actually, Crosslines gave us a 55 gallon barrel to fill so the boat is a small representation of what needs to be collected. The “fish” can be canned tuna, mackerel, salmon, or sardines. This is a BIG project and we need as many cans as possible. So please, put out your fishing lines when shopping and reel in some BIG catches of canned fish. This is a huge challenge, but Southminster responds well to big challenges. Let’s do our part and help Crosslines restock their shelves with canned fish. We need to fill the boat every Sunday. So don’t forget to “go fishing.”

We will be collecting the fish throughout Lent, ending on April 2.

Maundy Thursday will be a joint service and held here at Southminster on April 2nd beginning at 6:30 p.m. The title of this service is “The Sheep Will Be Scattered” written by Don Wiltfong. The service is a re-enactment of the Last Supper in which we are introduced to each disciple and then we witness how each one falls away just as Jesus predicted: “You will all become deserters, for it is written, ‘I will strike the shepherd and the sheep will be scattered.’”

Spring Gathering Luncheon Covenant Presbyterian is hosting the Spring Gathering of the Presbyterian Women of John Calvin Presbytery on Saturday, April 25th from 9:00-1:30. Lunch is $6.50. Please register with Ann in the Covenant Presbyterian church office with a check made to Covenant for your lunch fee. Registration is due by April 15th. Come for the entire program or just the morning worship service or for lunch. The designated mission effort for this meeting is Rare Breed, a local organization sponsored by The Kitchen, Inc., which serves homeless teens in Springfield. They have requested hygiene items, single serving food items such as granola bars, fruit cups, water bottles plus diapers and baby wipes for those young women with babies.

Encouragement and best wishes before finals will be given to our college students in the form of a $15 gift card. There will be cards for the congregation to sign on April 26th and May 3rd. We have a total of 10 college students from our congregation.

International Peacemakers

and NOROC In the fall of 2008 International Peacemaker Petru Solca came to Southwest Missouri. The International Peacemaker is just one part of the Peacemaking Program administered by PCUSA

and is supported by your donations to One Great Hour of Sharing. In addition to introducing us to his native Romania, Petru made us aware of New Opportunities for Romanian Orphaned Children or NOROC. This marvelous Romanian charity which he helped to establish has the following mission statement. NOROC’s mission is to offer new opportunities for spiritual, physical, educational and emotional growth so that at-risk Romanian institutionalized children may escape cycles of poverty, dependency and abuse, and may become independent adults who can nurture meaningful relationships and contribute to their communities. A Brief History Lession: When communism fell in Romania in the December of 1989, tens of thousands of children were left abandoned in Romanian orphanages. Dictator Nicolae Ceausescu had made it a goal to greatly increase the Romanian population with hopes that a larger work force would create a more powerful economy. Ceausescu attempted to achieve this goal by requiring families to have at least 5 children. Due to extreme poverty many families were unable to care for these children and were forced to place them in state institutions. NOROC: As the world became aware of this problem, people flocked to Romania to adopt these abandoned children. NOROC was originally designed to aid American couples seeking to adopt children from Romania. Over time NOROC developed volunteer programs to address many of the needs of the institutionalized children. Their volunteers provide a nurturing touch to infants; tutoring, educational enrichment classes; and even college scholarships to these forgotten and neglected children. Find out more about this organization at http://www.noroc.org. Southminster will collect the offering for One Great Hour of Sharing on Easter Sunday. Please give generously so that we can continue to meet International Peacemakers like Petru Solca and learn of their efforts to bring peace and new hope to their part of our world.

Spring is in the air and the early flowers are in full bloom. Lilacs are my favorite flower of the spring. I have loved them since I was a kid. The fragrance of a bunch of lilacs is, in my opinion, heavenly. The most fragrant lilacs I have ever had were actually white lilacs. The bush was given to me by a Parish Nurse in Lost Nation, Iowa when I completed my internship there. For a long time, it did not bloom, but when it finally did, you sure knew it. Even though it was a small bush, the fragrance overpowered the larger purple one next to it. I really hated to leave it behind when we moved from Pittsburg, but I know that the new owners of our house enjoy it as much as I did. Enjoying fragrance of lilacs is short lived. They are spring flowers and so it is important to savor them while you can. I used to make the most of my lilacs by cutting new bunches of blooms every week or so until they were gone. That gave me time to appreciate what I had for the short time it was available. Life is a lot like that. We have to appreciate what we have for the time that we have it. Speaking of short-term, I will begin a short-term (3 months) call with Southminster Presbyterian Church in Springfield, MO on Easter Sunday. This will be in addition to my call as the Pastoral Presbyter of JCP. During this time, I will not be available for pulpit supply on Sunday mornings. I am already starting to appreciate the discipline of preaching every Sunday because it causes me to think more about the Word of God. I also will appreciate getting to know a lot more people in the church and in the community. I believe it will be a wonderful time for all of us. While I look forward to the change, I continue to be excited about serving JCP. The traveling Presbytery office is really fun. We have come up with a few things to make it more connectional so I encourage you to come and visit when it is in your area. A schedule can be found on our website. Have a wonderful Easter. Rev. Susan Rosenbaum Pastoral Presbyter John Calvin Presbytery P.O. Box 787 Shell Knob, MO 65747 620-674-1844 - cell
