AWSUM Celebrity Interview

AWSUM News caught up with sensational YouTube comedy wondergirl, Suzelle DIY, who has just landed her very own slot on Comedy Central – not bad for a poppie with a hectic wannabe accent and an ever-silent best friend! Suzelle DIY’s

YouTube channel has more than 48 000 subscribers and picks up 40 000 views on the day a new episode launches.)

Q: Congratulations on the latest feather in your cap – your very own slot on Comedy Central. How does it feel to play in the big league now? A: I feel like a million rands. It has been a dream come true to watch myself on TV.

Q: Who is Suzelle really? Tell us a bit more about yourself – likes, dislikes, favourite movie, favourite song, favourite book.

A: I’m just a small town girl with a passion for DIY, braai-ing and dinner parties. My movie of the moment is the How To

Be Single and my favourite book is How to do Just about Everything by The Reader’s Digest.

Q: Why do you think you are so popular? What is your secret to success?A: I think people like that the DIY in my videos is useful, and that sometimes things go wrong. My secret is to keep going no matter what happens!Q: What are your top five DIY tips

for women like yourself who like to be glamorous and never get their hands dirty while doing the dirty workA: Right, this is a good one. It’s important to always look your best no matter what you are busy doing.• Wear an apron when you are in the kitchen.• Use safety goggles when you chop onions to stop your eyes from tearing up and smudging your

make-up.• Run your nails over a bar of soap before you do the

gardening. It will keep the dirt from getting under your nails.

•Buy a box of disposable gloves. They are great to use for any DIY project.

• I like to cut up plastic packets and lay them down on my work surface to prevent any mess escaping

Q: What do you do for fun and relaxation in your leisure time? A: I like to go for a coffee with my best friend, Marianne. I like to watch cooking shows and look for DIY ideas on the Google.

Suzelle DIYQ: Other celebrities, across a spectrum, like Nataniël, Hellen Zille, Tim Noakes and Jan-Hendrik, want to be associated with you. Why is that? What do they gain? What do you gain? A: I think they are just excited to meet me because they want to soak up some of my creativity.

Q: Where do you get your ideas from for your videos? Which episode is your favourite? Why?A: I get my ideas from all sorts of places. I find them on the Google and in magazines. I also get sent a lot of great ideas from my fans. My favourite episode is How to Make a Braai Pie, because that was my first video to go viral.

Q: Are you English or Afrikaans? Who are your biggest fans – English or Afrikaans-speaking people? Why do you think is that so? A: I’m Afrikaans, but I like to speak in English in my videos so that the peoples overseas can also enjoy the videos. Shame. I think my fans are a real mix of different cultures.

Q: What is the single thing that you enjoy most when creating and crafting a new episode?A: I love filming it with Marianne and my neighbour Hennie. We always have so much fun together.

Q What DIY message do you have for our readers (parents of schoolgoing children)?A: Parents you must teach your kids that their creativity is their number one tool!

I always have a roll or two of frozen pastry in my freezer, you should

too, it comes in handy if I want to make a tart or pie at the drop of

a hat. I love little jam tarts and when the craving hits me, I make my

way to the freezer and pull out a roll of shop bought frozen pastry,

wait for it to thaw, roll it out, cut out little rounds and pop them

into the hollows of a muffin tin, place a little butter in the base,

sprinkle with desiccated coconut and a spoonful of any jam that

takes my fancy , pop it into a hot oven, put the kettle on and before

you know it I’m munching on jam tarts and sipping tea. The other

thing I like to do with a sheet of pastry is fill it and make a roulade.

A roulade is a dish of filled rolled meat or pastry, the term roulade

originates from the French word "rouler", meaning "to roll". Now

what I like about having a sheet of pastry handy is that you can fill it

with a million different things and call them, tarts pies and roulades,

you can make any of these from scratch or use up left-overs from

the night before to make a pie.

Linda Hallberg loves her grungey makeup mode. Go for a new softer rebooted version of the 90’s make up with a palette of browns and maroons instead of dead black .The key is dark moody maroon lips and matching coffin nails with Essence Megaslicks Balm Stain in Lady and the Vamp, R53.95 and Megalast Nail Colour in Under Your Spell, R56.95, at selected Clicks. Keep skin matte and make-up minimal with deeply smudged eyes.

Gorge grunge

Here’s the easiest way ever to edge

up your look --- just tie a flannel

checked shirt around your waist!

*MUST-HAVESGRUNGE CHECKLIST:

This trend is all about attitude and comfort, worn-in, damaged, slouchy

stuff so get your look sorted.

Checks --- in any shape or form are compulsory.

Oversized checked flannel shirt --- wear it over T’s, under puffas and

always around your waist.Ripped, patched, washed-out jeans --- the scruffier the better and denim cut-offs with dark tights for the girls.

Denim overalls --- wear one strap unclasped, folding down the panel and this also works with pinnies.

Beanie mania ---- THE unisex accessory or bandanas and flat bill

caps for dudes.Chunky boots --- floral pretties for the gals and good old American

work boots for the guys.

@ Layering inspo for grunge The best thing about cold season

grunge is the practical layering like

wrapping a shirt around your waist.

It’s a great way to keep an extra layer

handy if you’re out for some fun and it

gets chilly. You can rock the look with

sweatshirts, puffas, biker jackets and

for the girls it’s equally cool to tie a

shirt around your favorite LBD, or add

a checked shirt over a floral skater skirt.

We love the “talking” beanies

Fashion Editor Pepe Sofianos goes for modern grunge in a big way this winter.Grunge was a music style popularised by bands like Nirvana and Soundgarden in the 1990s and

their laid-back scruffy style of dressing soon morphed into a way of life.

Suffering an injury from an exercise or sport can not only be painful and require time off from your sport or training, but it can cause future health niggles down the line. Here are some steps to reduce your risk of a sports injury:

Warm-up properlyFailing to properly warm-up your muscles and joints before performing strenuous exercise or a physically demanding sport will almost guarantee an injury.

Intense training can predispose some muscles vulnerable to injury through overuse if they’re not adequately warmed-up.

Every warm-up session should be at least 10-15 minutes long and be a balance of stretching and light exercise to encourage blood flow to the muscles to prepare them for the activity to follow.

Warming up effectively increases blood flow to the muscles and increasing the flexibility of the muscle fibres, considerably reducing the risk of pulling or straining a muscle.

Stretch the Achilles tendon, hamstring, and quadriceps areas and hold the positions. Don’t bounce.

Use the right equipmentDepending on the type of sport or exercise you’re participating in, if it comes with protective equipment, use it.

Especially if the sport or activity involves physical contact with other players (rugby/ soccer) or possible contact with objects such as hard balls (cricket/baseball). Some protective equipment includes shin pads, boxing gloves or protective head gear.

The right footwear is also important as shoes designed specifically offer certain sports offer specific support to the foot and ankle to prevent twisting and injury. Wearing properly fitting shoes helps provide shock absorption and stability.

Proper techniqueRegardless of the exercise or sport you’re participating in you need to learn the correct techniques associated with it. Not only to prevent overuse injury but also to get the most out of your exercise by working the right muscles and tendons.

Make use of the right qualified experts to assist you and teach you the correct form and technique.

Know your limitsAny sport or exercise should push you out your comfort zone and challenge you. But you also need to learn to listen to your body and acknowledge your physical limitations.

If you are new to a sport or form of exercise, start out slowly to avoid pulling or straining muscles and give yourself time to build up your stamina and strength gradually. In time your fitness and strength will increase, and then you can push yourself more.

Strive for a total body workout of cardiovascular, strength-training, and flexibility exercises.

Rest days are importantDaily exercise is an ideal many people strive for, and while it is a good idea to keep moving every day, rest days are just as important as the days you train.

Your body cannot function optimally if you exercise intensely every single day and do not give it time to recover. The muscles need to rest and recover. Not only can inadequate rest lead to injury but it can also lead to plateaus.

Intense exercise puts a strain on the musculoskeletal system, nervous system, and immune system which puts you at risk for injury and even illness.

This doesn’t mean you have to spend a rest day on the couch though – active recovery is always an option. So use your rest days to do some yoga, go for a hike, a slow jog or a bike ride. Just make sure it’s something low-intensity and different from your usual training.

Pain vs discomfortPushing through pain is a sure-fire way to get injured and be out of your sport for a long time. You need to learn to listen to your body, know when you’re experiencing discomfort and when your body is in pain.

Discomfort during exercise is common, especially in those new to exercise, where they are pushing out of their comfort zones and getting breathless, sweaty and tired. However, actual pain which is signalled by any burning, stabbing or sharp pains is your body’s way of telling you to stop. If you continue and ignore these signals, injury is sure to follow.

Keep hydratedEspecially in warm environments or when exercising outside, make sure you remain hydrated or you will be at risk for injury.

A dehydrated body can drastically reduce mental and physical fitness and put you at risk for injury.

Cool down adequatelyJust as important as the warm-up, the cool down after physical exertion is important. Catch your breath and then perform between 5-10 minutes of gentle exercise (walking, light cycling) to allow your heart rate to return to normal.

This will also give your body enough time to flush out lactic acid and get the blood flowing with oxygen and nutrients to your tired muscles, which also prevents muscle stiffness.

While a sports injury can never be entirely prevented, there are steps that can be taken to reduce the risk of injury. These include warming up properly, using the right

equipment, proper technique and the appropriate amount of rest and recovery.

Blue School Netball Tour to KnysnaOn Friday 29 April, The Pinelands Primary School’s U13 Netball girls left school at 6am on a tour to Knysna.

The weekend consisted of meeting players from other schools, playing numerous matches and sightseeing in Knysna. The matches were not all won, but the girls had an enjoyable few days and learnt how to work as a team.

A big thank you goes to the coaches, Mrs. Williams and Mrs Consul, who accompanied the girls on tour.

The Blue School is proud of their achievements. Well done, U13s!

At Sun Valley Primary School, play is an integral part of a pre-schooler’s academic journey.

The average pre-schooler is now subjected to desk work, worksheets and written activities. Play has been taken out of their routine and made an additional part of their school day, if and when they have completed the written tasks set. This takes away from the children’s physical development.

Play helps our pre-schoolers learn to socialise and problem solve. It develops their fine and gross motor skills as well as their vestibular system. All these skills

help our children cope with the pressure and expectations of the academic world.

No child can sit still in the classroom and focus on set tasks without first being provided the opportunity to play (both free play and structured play). Free play is important for children to develop their imagination and creative ability. Children also need structured play where they learn through playful experiences.

Play is ultimately necessary for children to taste academic success and at Sun Valley Primary we are getting this right.

Play sets up the brain for academic success

Go Kart Derby DayThank you to all the families who supported our annual staff fundraiser. We had many parents on the day of the event, running the tuckshop and braaing and selling the boerewors rolls, as well as cheering on the sidelines and taking part in the races.

With all this support we were able to raise approximately R50 000. This money will be used to put a mat under the gym equipment on the field, to create a softer landing for our children if they fall.

The highlight of the day was watching the children enjoy a healthy, active day as they raced around the track with such excitement, whilst cheering on each other.

Readers are LeadersAs part of our reading week, in commemoration of Shakespeare’s birthday each year, Pinelands North Primary invites leaders from the school and broader community to show children the importance of reading in order to achieve success. Guests either read to a grade or talk to the children about how reading played a life in their success. Our children thoroughly enjoyed the day.

Soccer and Netball FestivalOn Friday, 6 May we held our annual Soccer and Netball Festival at Pinelands North Primary School. The afternoon was a great success. The netball final was played between Surrey Primary School and Grove Primary School. The winner of the match was Grove Primary School.

In the 5-a-side soccer tournament the final was contested between Surrey Primary School and Kenwyn Primary School. Kenwyn Primary School were the victors in the final.

After the finals we had the prize-giving, where the winners and runners-up received medals and prizes. We also gave medals and prizes to the soccer and netball player of the tournament.

Prefects care about communityOne of the many portfolios of the Groote Schuur High School prefect body is “Community Involvement”. Once a month, a group of learners visit Woodside Special Care Centre to celebrate with everyone who had a birthday in that month. The learners provide the refreshments, spend time interacting with the residents, and are privileged to be part of this wonderful connection with everyone at the care centre.

Mintek Science QuizThe annual Mintek Science Quiz, commonly known as Minquiz, took place on Thursday, 19 May at Stellenbosch University. The quiz is based on four main disciplines (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and general Mineralogy) and is split into two parts.

In the first part all participants write a test based on all of the disciplines. The marks for these tests are collated and added to give each school a combined total. The top five schools then go through to a team quiz round where they compete against one another and a clock.

This year there were 43 teams from all over the province, including schools from Langebaan, Worcester, Bredasdorp and Robertson. Schools are placed into one of two categories, Gold or Platinum, depending on the school’s previous year’s matriculation Mathematics, English and Physical Science marks. SACS competed in the Platinum category against 18 other schools. SACS placed third in 2015 and first in 2014 in this competition.

SACS was represented this year by Nicholas Clemo, Bronson Rudner, and Alexander Gloor, who won the event. Bronson was also placed first in the written part of the quiz and has been selected to represent the Western Cape at the national competition later this year. Congratulations to all three young men and thank you to Mrs Van Zyl for accompanying them.

He’s only 17, but can deadlift 230kg. Spencer Hammond broke three records at the SA Powerlifting Championship after training for a year.

The Kenilworth teen has set his sights on a gold medal at the World Championship in Texas, US next month. Training for a world championship is a commitment, especially while Spencer is busy writing his matric exams at Westerford High School. “Some people say I’m a gymkop, but I don’t think they really understand how much work I’ve put into it” he says. “Nothing’s easy in life; if you want to win, you have to push it properly.”

Spencer got into powerlifting by training with some friends, who suggested he enter a competition. He competed for the first time last September. Three months later, he qualified for Western Province Champs, and then SA Champs in March.

At the recent SA Champs, he broke the record with his bench press of 125kg and deadlift of 230kg, as well as the overall weight he lifted.

Coach Trenton Brookes says Spencer had what it took to be world champion. “One of the most important things to be a powerlifter is discipline.” Brookes says. “Spencer is a really

hard-working person, I’m well pleased with his progress. With more training, I see him possibly breaking world records.”

Spencer’s mom, Wendy Hammond, says the sport had had unexpected benefits in other areas of her son’s life. “It added a tremendous amount of discipline, which indirectly rubbed off in term of his school work. It’s given him a better sense of organising himself around his other activities,” she says.

Balancing gym and school is a tricky business, especially in the middle of matric exams. “It’s difficult, I’m not going to lie. I try to finish all my work before I go to gym, otherwise I’ll be up into the early hours of the morning,” Spencer says.

Surprisingly, Wendy has never been to see her son compete. “I can’t stand to see him picking up these heavy weights. I don’t have the stomach to go and watch him, I’m not ready.”

With his training program on track, Spencer says the biggest obstacle to winning gold in Texas was finding the funds to attend the competition.

Next year after high school, Spencer hopes to take a gap year to focus on training. “I’d like to get a gold at the world champs next month, but if not, I’m going to try again next year.”
