Overview

Establishedintheearly1990’s,theSITEnglishLanguageCentreoffersafull-timeIntensiveEnglishLanguageCertificate(IEL)forspeakersofotherlanguages.SituatedwithinthemainSITcampusinInvercargill,theLanguageCentrehasaccesstoallcampusfacilities,andstudentshaveplentyofopportunitiestomixwithKiwistudentsstudyingmainstreamprogrammes.

Thefulltimeprogrammeconsistsof23hoursofclassroomstudyperweekandaccesstoanextra4hoursofacademicsupport,heldon2afternoonsafterclasseachweek.

ThereisalsoanoptionalIELTSpreparationclassscheduledintheafternoonsession(1-3pm),whichhasprovensuccessfulinpreparingstudentsforfurtheracademicstudyhereatSIT.

Activities

GroupactivitiesarearrangedbytheSchoolonamonthlybasis,normallyonaFridayafternoon–theseincludeBBQ’s,tenpinbowling,pool/snookerandmovies.Fromtimetotime,daytripsandoff-campusexcursionstovisitplacesofinterestarealsoorganized.Allinternationalstudentsareencouragedtoparticipateinrecreational,community,orsports-basedactivitiesduringtheirfreetime.

Assessment

Studentswillbecarefullyassessedonentryandthroughouttheircourseofstudy.Awrittenprogressreportisgiveneachsemester.Attheendofthecourse,studentswillreceiveaSouthernInstituteofTechnologyattendancecertificateandareportontheirproficiencyinEnglish.

Guidelines

Eachyear,SITwillofferlimitedscholarshipplacesacrossallprogrammes.ForBachelorprogrammesthereisanannualtuitionscholarshipof$5,000.Fordiplomaprogrammesthere

isanannualtuitionscholarshipof$3,500,whileCertificateprogrammesofferapotentialtuitionscholarshipof$3,500fora1yearprogrammeand$1,750forahalfyearprogramme.

Selection Criteria

TheSITInternationalTuitionScholarshipseekstoidentifystudentswhowillexcelacademically,showexceptionalleadershippotential,andmakeanimpactontheircommunitiesthroughservicetoothers.RecipientsareselectedinJanuaryandMay,priortothestartofeachsemester’sintake.Onreceipt,applicationsarescreenedbyanInternationalScholarshipCommittee.Applicantswillreceivenotificationofreceiptwithin5workingdays.

Scholarship Conditions
