District Director
What an industrious
month with many
activities shared across
the District. Toastmasters International has
many resources from the monthly The
Leader Letter - Toastmasters International
and International Magazine - Toastmasters
International which are always available
online and support your learning within the
organisation.
Do you want statistics to share with your
members? These can be found on the
dashboard in the Distinguished
performance reports or on the Statistics
and Data Hub - Toastmasters
International, these info graphics are
valuable guides for all to share.
If you are missing local information across
SA, Vic and Tasmania please visit the D73
Events Calendar - District 73 Toastmasters
- Vic, Tas & SA where you will find a hive
of activity as engagement is certainly
evident. Let Heath our webmaster know of
events so we can encourage others to
attend: Queries/Edits to District

Save these dates:
• District Executive committee meeting (Division Director, Area Directors and District Leadership team) via zoom: Sunday 10th November 2-3.30pm (AEST), links for registration are sent to all required attendees, save the date.
• Club officer/ Toastmaster Leadership training by the Division Directors round two: 1st November- 29th February 2020, Division directors will advise when their training will be held.
Last weekend we had incredible resources
shared through educational events in SA
(Pathways Masterclass) and Victoria
(Division supported event Metro, Inner City
and Eastern) on the 12th and 13th October.
Check out the calendar for future events,
many among the exciting area contests in
progress. Congratulations to all area
contest winners looking forward to seeing
the best of the best at the Division contests
in February and March 2020.
Pathways is regularly updated and
supported through either the District
website and Toastmasters International
Pathways page: We currently have
82.75% of club officers engaged in the
Pathways program - just under the region
average. It would be fabulous to have all
club officers on Pathways as it is now the
only educational program available for new
members. Officers are the conduit for new
members. Our statistics show that 46.28%
of new members are on Pathways we
need to increase this significantly to
support the only education resources
available to our newest recruits.

A Note from our Editor
An inspiring quote I came across whilst preparing this issue :
If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you
are a leader..." John Quincy Adams (US President - looooong time ago).
True statements never age, never go out of fashion. The words leadership and influence
are often so inter-related because regardless of title or what position you have often we
know who the 'real boss' is - the one who has influence. In this issue we provide some
thoughts on leadership especially within the Toastmasters community, we put a call out
to you to take on Leadership roles - consider these roles seriously as they are huge
stepping stones to further your communication / presentation skills / confidence - just
about everything.
Remember also to make regular visits to our District 73 website for calendar of events, contacts and
many other resources available to you - its all there!

MAKING WAVES
Over the last six weeks, I have attended many club competitions as a ‘guest’. That’s code for judge of course! While District commitments prevent me from attending as many as I would like, where I have been able to be a Chief Judge or Voting Judge, it’s been great seeing how clubs operate, the culture they create and the level of excellence they achieve with the Toastmasters brand. Overall, the clubs I have visited are performing well, with a high membership base of enthusiastic people, vibrant meetings, and are hitting their Club Success Plan ambitions and Distinguished Club Program targets. These clubs are making waves. They are creating a positive ripple that flows through everything they do. However, this is not the case with all clubs. Just before the renewals date of 1 October, there were 48% of clubs across the District below charter membership strength of 20 members. We need to build these clubs back up so they can provide a great experience to all their members. And where does this quality experience start? Where do those waves begin? They begin with each one of us! ‘Every member of a Toastmasters club deserves and has the right to receive a
quality experience.’
Life has something called a Ripple Effect.
Everything we think, everything we say,
every action we take, and every action we
don’t take creates a ripple. Those ripples can
be positive or negative to you and others.
Enough ripples will create waves, and many
waves can be powerful enough to form a tide
– a tide that can be turned if the current is
taking you in the wrong direction. And it all
starts with a positive ripple!
The same is true for Toastmasters. Is what
you are thinking a positive ripple? Is what
you are saying contributing to a solution or
contributing to negativity? Are you taking
actions in your club that will increase the
quality of the club, or take it even further if
you are already high-performing? It all starts
with a ripple – what you think, say and do.
To make a ripple though, you must make a
splash. Ripples don’t start by themselves.
The bigger the splash you make, the bigger
the ripple. There is only so much one person
can do, so it’s important we all work together.
Every member can help to create a quality
experience for themselves and those around
them. Get a Club Coach if your club needs
support; get on your club’s Executive
Committee to give back (and you’ll increase
your speaking opportunities too!); put up your
hand for a District Officer role; and strive for
Toastmasters brand excellence, from
consistent branding of flyers to the in-
meeting experience.
So next time you are at a club meeting, out
talking about Toastmasters, or listening to
someone else tell you their views, ask
yourself – ‘Are we making a positive or
negative ripple here?’
All the best - be extraordinary and make an
impact!

YOUTH LEADERSHIP PROGRAM NEEDS YOU!
Have you heard of the YLP? The Youth Leadership Program is designed for Grade 6 to 12 students to
learn communication and leadership skills. Toastmasters delivers the course in the schools following
the same model as a speechcraft course with the difference that this is a free service offering to
schools. A great legacy for Toastmasters - helping to shape the words of our future communicators.
Without volunteers, the YLP ceases to exist. This is a call for volunteer Assistants or a Co-ordinator if
you have at least one year's experience as an Assistant. Besides the pleasure to know that you are
helping the students to become better communicators, YLP Coordinator experience is one of the
mandatory options for achieving DTM.
Who should I contact to know more?
Please contact Kelly Vieira the D73 YLP Coordinator via [email protected]
Oh! and one more thing... the District needs a database with all contact details of every single person
who has participated in the YLP as assistant or coordinator and who is willing to volunteer in the future.
WE need to maintain a list with all the names and also to know any programs you have completed for
this TM year 19/20 or you will complete so please contact Kelly via [email protected] and let
her know that you exist so
1. You can be recognised for your efforts;
2. We are able to quantify number of schools we service to enable us to measure the
program’s success;
3. We can easily contact you in case of need for programs that are constantly
emerging.

Q&A ON LEADERSHIP
MEET KARINA SKEGG
We had some fun this month talking leadership
and what it means to us.
I spoke with Karina Skegg newly appointed Bass
Division Director on her new role and here is
part of the conversation for your reading. I
have also added some resources and material
that's out there you may wish to look - from
body language tips to leadership ideas
generally... Thank you Karina for your time and
your thoughts...
Q: What does it mean to be in Toastmasters?
To me Toastmasters is about more than
leadership. It is about connection, a very
enabling and pivotal aspect of humanity. When
I attend a toasties event I instantly have a
connection with the other attendees anywhere
in the world. I am attending a work conference
in another country (OK New Zealand) but know
that with a few clicks I can be
amongst friends. Toastmasters is about finding
confidence. Confidence to express a view at
work or home. Finding the gumption to speak
to the person in the lift, ask the doctor the
question you are embarrassed about or a
captive audience to try out new things.
The speeches vary in length but I can tackle any
subject for 5-7 minutes. In fact, I have learned
about all sorts of things I would never have
known by listening to other people’s
passions. Enthusiasm is infectious!
Q: Are you more focused on leadership skills
now that you’re a Division
Director? What are your expectations from
people around you?
I have arrived late to the Division Director party
and have launched into a Division that is vibrant
and active. The leadership roles challenge me
in a different way. My expectations are of
openness and curiosity - after all we are all in
this together!
Q: How are your Area Directors going? They
have a tough job...
I have had the privilege of meeting the Area
Directors over Zoom. One day in the not too
distant future I am hoping this will translate
into an "in real life" event. Steven Angel, Sue
Macdonald, Ash Hall and Julia Davey as well as
the Presidents of the additional Area have been
welcoming, enquiring and friendly. I look
forward to serving them and the clubs they
represent in the 2019/20 year.
Q: Toastmasters – Where Leaders are
Made.. Is this true?
Hmmm I am not certain about "made" but it
could be true if you consider "made" to be
grown, cultivated, encouraged, challenged and
supported. A hot house of fertile souls
encouraging each other. I often remind new
members that Toastmasters is not about
making everyone the same, it is about helping
the member be authentically themselves in
their own time and way.
Q: What is your leadership style?
Everyone I meet is peppered with quotes and
references to Brene Brown. My aim is to always
dare greatly. Her latest publication is "Dare to
Lead" applying her research to the
workplace. It is a must read! There will always
be a twinkle of excitement in my eye as I
challenge myself by launching into a new
adventure. Care to join me?
