Renewable gases cut emissions
and provides grid level storage
across sectorsRNG
• 80% of California’s methane emissions
come from our waste
• RNG prevents the emissions from going
into the atmosphere
• Less than 20% RNG = 100% building
electrification
• 2-3 times more cost effective
• Key to decarbonizing transportation,
industry, agriculture and buildings sectors
Green Hydrogen
• Addresses reliability
• Uses existing pipeline infrastructure
• Energy when and where people need it
• UCI: Increased use of renewable electricity from

Smart energy policy must be balanced
To meet our goals, the
energy system of the
future must be

GermanyA cautionary tale
• Eliminated nuclear plants before having full
renewable capability
• Demand out of sync with supply:
• Had to use coal to deliver reliable power
during peak demand
• Overproduced wind/solar during periods
of low demand
• Germany’s emissions actually increased, while
paying Sweden to take excess wind/solar
• Germany will miss its 2020 targets

goals and preserve
choice, while
minimizing disruption
and cost
