LENDORE WINS 2014 BOWERMAN AWARD

An undefeated season and a pair of national championship titles in the 400 meters earned Texas A&M sprinter Deon Lendore a prestigious honor in track and fi eld as he was named the 2014 winner of The Bower-man Award during a ceremony held at the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association convention. It’s the second Bowerman honor for the Aggie track and fi eld pro-gram as Texas A&M joins Oregon as the only schools to have a male and female recipient of the award. Aggie sprinter Jessica Beard claimed the 2011 Bowerman Award. Lendore went undefeated through 14 races at 400 meters in 2014, sweeping SEC and NCAA titles in the event as he produced some of the fastest times ever run by a collegian in the open 400 as well as on 4x400 relay legs. The native of Trinidad & Tobago set a national record indoors with his A&M school record of 45.03 at the SEC Indoor Championships, which is fourth fastest ever by a collegian indoors and sixth best on the world all-time list. When Lendore won his fi rst individual national title at the NCAA Indoor Championships in March his time of 45.21 was the second fastest winning mark in the history of the meet. Outdoors, he moved to No. 10 on the all-time collegiate list with a 44.36 clocking to win the SEC Outdoor title. The 44.36, which broke a 45-year-old Aggie record set by Curtis Mills, was the fourth fastest time in the world for the 2014 season. Lendore posted a 45.02 to become the fi rst A&M winner of the NCAA Outdoor 400m title since Mills won in 1969. Accomplishments during Lendore’s junior campaign included fi ve SEC titles and three NCAA championships as he added three SEC relay titles and one NCAA relay title to his individual championship races. In completing a third sweep of indoor and outdoor conference 400m titles, Lendore also achieved a third set of 4x400 relay titles. He is a perfect 13 for 13 in conference races over his career, which includes six races in the 400, six in the 4x400, and once in the 4x100. In relay action Lendore anchored four A&M school record perfor-mances in the 4x100 (38.30), 4x200 (1:20.29), 4x400 indoor (3:03.20) and 4x400 outdoor (2:59.60). The indoor 4x400 eff ort at the SEC Championships was a collegiate indoor record as Lendore’s split of 44.63 seconds, the fastest ever recorded by a collegian indoors, secured the victory. Lendore supplied the Aggies with a split of 44.10 seconds in the 4x400 at the NCAA Outdoor Champi-onships as A&M claimed the win and just missed the collegiate record by 0.01 of a second with a 2:59.60, the second fastest collegiate time ever run.

LSU Men - After tying for eighth place in the fi nal men’s team standings at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships a year ago, the LSU Tigers have cracked the Top 10 of the fi nal U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Top 25 power rankings of the 2015 indoor season as the No. 8-ranked team in the country as they head to the national meet this weekend to be held Friday and Saturday at Arkansas’ Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayett eville. The Tigers won their fourth NCAA Indoor national championship in the men’s 4x400-meter relay and Vernon Norwood sprinted to the NCAA Indoor silver medal in the men’s 400-meter dash as the team scored 18 points at the national meet held at the Albuquerque Convention Center in New Mexico in 2014. Norwood returns for his fi nal NCAA Indoor Championships this weekend as he is set to line up in the 400 meters once again with a seasonal-best time of 45.56 seconds, while the Tigers return all four legs that took home the na-tional title in the mile relay a year ago. Norwood will be joined in the relay by fellow senior and 400-meter qualifi er Quincy Downing and juniors Darrell Bush and Cyril Grayson as they have run a top time this season of 3 minutes, 4.28 seconds. Making his NCAA Indoor Championships return in the 200-meter dash is former All-American Aaron Ernest, who was re-cently crowned the SEC Indoor Champion in the event for the second time in his collegiate career after racing to a seasonal-best time of 20.67 in the qualifying round. Also making their NCAA Indoor debuts with the Tigers this weekend will be senior Joshua Thompson with a seasonal-best time of 7.73 in the 60-meter hurdles and sophomore Tremayne Acy with a season-al-best time of 20.85 in the 200 meters. Women - The LSU Lady Tigers are poised to improve upon their tie for 12th place fi nish in the fi nal women’s team standings at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships a year ago as they have matched their representation from a season ago with eight entries into this year’s championship being held this weekend at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayett eville, Arkansas. This week, the Lady Tigers have earned their best national ranking of the 2015 indoor season as the No. 15-ranked women’s team nationally in the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Top 25 power ranking released Monday. The Lady Tigers feature a true national championship contender in the form of senior Tori Bliss, who joined the 60-foot club in the shot put while being crowned the SEC Indoor Champi-on in the event on Feb. 27 with a SEC Indoor meet record of 60 feet, 1 inch on her very fi rst throw of the competition. LSU’s 2014 NCAA Outdoor sil-ver medalist is poised to earn her second career All-America honor while making her fi rst career appearance at the NCAA Indoor Championships. An NCAA Indoor fi nalist in the long jump in her debut a year ago, sopho-more Nataliyah Friar is the team’s lone NCAA Championships qualifi er in two events as she will appear in both the long jump and triple jump next weekend. Sophomore Jalen Miller, the fi rst SEC 60-meter cham-pion in Ole Miss history, is among the favorites to win the national title in the shortest sprint. He ranks third in the NCAA with a school record-tying 6.55 earlier this year at the Armory. In nine 60-meter races (prelims and fi nals) this year, he is undefeated and has run 6.60 or faster eight times. He ranks ninth nationally with a season-best mark of 52-9.5 that he achieved in Fayett eville at the Tyson Invitational. Young placed third in the long jump and fourth in the triple jump at the recent SEC indoor meet. It’s not the fi rst NCAA Champi-onship appearance for Young, though. He competed for the Rebels in the triple jump at last year’s NCAA outdoor meet, and during his time at Florida State he competed at four diff erent national meets. For his entire career, he is a fi ve-time All-American. The Ole Miss men placed fourth at the SEC indoor meet, their best showing since fi nishing third in 1984. In addition to Miller, the Rebels picked up SEC titles from Daniel Bulmer in the mile and the distance medley relay squad of Bulmer, Dameon Morgan, Holland Sherrer and Craig Engels. It was the second straight DMR title for Ole Miss, and it was done with four diff erent relay members than last year’s group (Robert Domanic, Montez Griffi n, Will Spiers, Sean Tobin). Ole Miss tied for 24th at last year’s NCAA indoor meet and has placed top 25 on 10 occasions in its history. Women - Ole Miss will send two athletes to this weekend’s NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayett eville, Arkansas. Brooke Feldmeier, who was just crowned SEC Fresh-man Runner of the Year, will compete in the 800 meters. In her fi rst season ever as a regular 800-meter runner, she was SEC runner-up in a school-record 2:04.34 that leads all freshmen in the nation. She ranks second in the confer-ence and ninth nationally, overall. She was a multi-eventer and 400-meter runner as a high schooler last year in Olympia, Washington. Fifth-year senior Fabia McDonald returns to the national indoor meet for the second time after she placed 15th in the pentathlon in 2012 and was a second team All-Ameri-can. She was on top of her game at the recent SEC indoor meet, placing sixth and breaking her own school record with a score of 4,168 that ranks her 13th in the NCAA this year. In its history, Ole Miss has placed top 25 three times at the NCAA indoor meet, with a best of 13th in 2008.

MISSISSIPPI STATE After earning the highest fi nish in school history at the SEC Indoor Cham-pionships, the Mississippi State women’s track and fi eld team moved up six spots to No. 12 in the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coach-es Association Rankings. At the SEC Indoor Championships this past weekend, the Bulldogs brought home seventh place and broke three school records, while senior Erica Bougard was also chosen as the 2015 SEC Wom-en’s Cliff Harper Trophy. Next up for the MSU track teams is the NCAA Championships, which will be held on March 13-14 in Fayett eville, Ark.

MISSOURI Three Tigers are departing for Fayett eville, Ark., this weekend to take part in the 50th running of the NCAA Indoor Championships. Representing the black and gold will be seniors Kearsten Peoples (weight throw, shot put) and Jill Rushin (shot put), and junior Markesh Woodson (60m dash). All three enter the two-day meet ranked in the top 10 of their respective events, including a national-leading position for Peoples in the weight throw. Peoples’ second PR of the season in the weight, 22.84m (74-11.25), not only set her over a foot ahead of the rest of the fi eld, but was also put her at No. 7 All-Time in the NCAA for the event. Peoples will follow Friday’s weight throw competition with a go in the shot put ring on Saturday. Joining her will be fellow-senior Jill Rushin, who currently owns the No. 5 mark in the NCAA this season with her lifetime best toss of 17.61m (57-9.50). The lone running event of the weekend for the Tigers also features the lone repre-sentative from the men’s team, as Markesh Woodson prepares to line up in the 60m dash. This will be his fi rst NCAA Indoor Championships appear-

ance since his freshman year, when he placed fi fth in the fi eld. Woodson secured his spot in this year’s championship meet with his PR, and school record, performance at the SEC Championships, where he placed second in 6.58. Events will begin at the Randal Tyson Track on Friday (March 13) and continue through Saturday (March 14).

SOUTH CAROLINA Selections for the 2015 Division I indoor track and fi eld championships were announced March 3, with four student-athletes from the Carolina men’s team punching a ticket for Fayett eville, Ark. Jermaine Collier, Dondre Echols and Jussi Kanervo qualifi ed in the 60-meter hurdles, and Ncincilili Titi qualifi ed in the 200-meter dash. The four entries are the most for the men’s team since sending fi ve to the 2010 indoor champi-onship. Collier ended the regular season on a high note two weekends ago, earning bronze in the 60mH at the SEC Championships in Kentucky. The junior from Trenton, N.J. owns the ninth-fastest time in the country for the event, 7.76 set at the Tyson Invitational, coincidentally the same track that will host the national championships. The junior from Oxon Hill, Md. ran the second-fastest time in the country for the indoor season, a 7.72 at the Armory Invitational on Jan. 31. This will be his fi rst trip to indoor nationals. Kanervo earned his spot at nationals in the fi nal weekend of the season, running a 7.77 preliminary race at the SEC Championship to qual-ify with the 12th-fastest time in the country. The sophomore from Espoo, Finland was an honorable mention All-American in the outdoor season last year for the 400mH, This is his fi rst nationals berth for the indoor. Titi joined the team in January and made an instant impact, competing in the 60 and 200m. Like Collier, he earned his qualifying time at Arkansas, run-ning a 20.87 time in the 200 at the Arkansas Open on Feb. 21. He lowered his time in the 200 in each of the fi nal six races of the regular season and enters nationals with the 12th-fastest time in the country. On the backs of these four, the men saw the biggest jump among top 25 teams in the latest USTFCCCA poll. After entering the rankings on February 16, the men have improved their position every week and peaked at No. 16 in the post-conference championship top 25. The two-day indoor championships begin Friday, March 13 at the Randall Tyson Track Complex. ESPN3 will stream the meet live on March 13 and 14 starting at 7 p.m. ET. TENNESSEE Tennessee has qualifi ed six student-athletes to the 2015 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Fayett eville, Arkansas -- a group that will compete across fi ve events. Making the trip to Fayett eville for the 14th-ranked Tennessee men are: Tavis Bailey (weight throw), Jake Blankenship (pole vault), Cameron Brown (weight throw), and Christian Coleman (60 meters). Bailey and true freshman Coleman are making their fi rst career trips to the NCAAs while Blankenship and Brown are each returning for the second time. Blankenship narrowly missed the medal stand as a true freshman at the NCAA Championships in 2013, placing fourth after sett ing UT’s freshman record in the event at 5.60 meters. Brown, on the other hand, made his fi rst trip to the NCAAs last season and came in 12th of 20.36. On the women’s side, Chelsea Blaase makes her return to the national meet in the 5000m while Cassie Wertman is poised to make her debut in the shot put. the weight throw, coming in at No. 11 (71-11.50/21.93). The sextet solidi-fi ed their qualifying positions at the SEC Indoor Championships on Feb. 27-28 as every member of the group collected a medal. The lone gold of the weekend went to Brown, who prevailed in the weight throw with a decisive eff ort of 74 feet, 1.75 inches (22.60). Bailey’s throw of 70 feet, 6.25 inches (21.49) was enough for the silver medal as the weight throw duo solidifi ed their position atop the SEC in the event. Another silver went to Blankenship, who fi nished runner-up of Andrew Irwin of Arkansas at a height of 18 feet, 3.75 inches (5.01). It was the second career SEC silver for the UT men’s captain. The last of the men’s medalists was Coleman, who became Tennessee’s fi rst medalist in the 60-meter dash since 2008 when his fi nal time of 6.62 was good enough for bronze. On the women’s side, a pair of gritt y eff orts earned Blaase and Wertman their respective medals. Blaase picked up the fi rst SEC medal of her career in the 3000 meters, recovering from an early stumble to batt le her way back to third at 9:26.06. Meanwhile, after a frustrating preliminary round saw Wertman just squeak into the fi nals, the junior unleashed a lifetime best throw of 56 feet, 3.75 inches (17.16) to launch up the leaderboard into third. Behind these individual eff orts, the fi nal team standings saw the Volunteer men place seventh with 48.0 points and the women in 10th with 22.0 points. At last season’s NCAA Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Tennessee sent a total of fi ve track and fi eld athletes: fi ve women and one men’s representa-tive. UT did not record a team score at the meet. This weekend will be the second competition for Tennessee at the Randal Tyson Track Center as it took part in the Tyson Invitational on Feb. 13-14.

TEXAS A&M Texas A&M, with the men ranked No. 4 and the women ranked No. 7 nationally, enters the NCAA Indoor Championships with 14 athletes competing in 11 events. The Aggie men have seven athletes entered in fi ve events and the women have seven athletes entered in six events. Last season the A&M women fi nished fi fth in the national championship meet while the men tied for eighth place. Men – Defending NCAA Indoor 400m champion Deon Lendore faces a stern test among the elite fi eld he will face in Fayett eville as well as returning from an injury that prevented him from fi nishing his prelim race during the SEC Championships. Shavez Hart, runner-up in the SEC Indoor 200m, enters the meet as the world leader in the event with a 20.57 clocking. The Aggies have the collegiate leading time in the 4x400 relay, third best in the world, with a 3:03.23 that ranks second on the all-time college list to the collegiate record of 3:03.20 A&M set a year ago. In winning a third consecutive SEC Indoor title in the 4x400 the Aggies posted a winning time of 3:03.75 on the oversized track at Kentucky without Lendore. Bralon Taplin anchored A&M to the SEC relay victory after he claimed runner-up honors in the 400. Other medal chances for the Aggies include triple jumper Latario Collie, who jumped 54-9 ¼ (16.69) at the Arkansas facility earlier this season and was SEC runner-up with a 54-4 (16.56), and vaulter Chase Wolfl e, who equaled the A&M school record of 18-0 ½ (5.50) to place third in the SEC. Women – Brea Garrett , who placed second in the SEC weight throw for the third consecutive year, returns to the NCAA Indoor meet as the defending champion. Garrett won both meets she competed in at Arkansas earlier this season, including the Tyson Invitational when she faced fi ve of the top seven throwers in the nation and took over the collegiate lead that week with a winning toss of 73-1 ¼ (22.28). Shamier Litt le, third in the NCAA Indoor 400 a year ago, enters with a collegiate leading time of 51.37 from her SEC victory on an oversized track. Kamaria Brown, third in the SEC 200 with a 23.03, is still a threat to win the 200m where she has a season best of 22.97. Scoring op-portunities are also available in the 60m with Aaliyah Brown, who fi nished fourth in the SEC; the heptathlon with Jena Hemann, who placed eighth in the NCAA meet a year ago; and the 4x400 relay that placed third in the SEC.

VANDERBILT Looking to cap a historic season, Vanderbilt sophomore triple-jumper Simone Charley will compete this weekend in the NCAA Championships in Fayett eville, Ark. Charley broke her own school record and captured third place with a mark of 43-5.25 at last weekend’s SEC Championships in Lexington, Ky. The performance enabled Charley to earn All-SEC hon-ors, and her mark is tied for sixth on the national list. “Simone stepped up again,” said Vanderbilt head coach Steve Keith. “She has shown that she is one of the best triple jumpers in the country. She had a great series and can now look forward to the NCAA Championships.” In her two years at Vanderbilt, Charley is producing one of the fi nest athletic careers in school history. She qualifi ed for nationals during last year’s outdoor season in the triple jump -- where she broke her own school record on multiple dates -- and is also one of the top stars on the Vanderbilt soccer team.
