Cross Ties Southeast Tennessee Episcopal Ministry (STEM) Holy Comforter + Christ Church, Alto + Epiphany + Trinity + Christ Church, Tracy City
ADMIN OFFICE SCHEDULE: Alexis will not be in the office tomorrow, Thursday, Nov. 30th. Also… the seasonal
holidays are upon us. We wanted to let you know that Cross Ties will be issued only once in November – and that will be mid-month. Please be sure to think ahead and send information that you would like to have included in Cross Ties or in the Take Outs early enough to be included in the Nov. 13th issue. The Admin Office will be closed the week of Thanksgiving (Nov. 25 – 27). (Note: Fr. Bill will be in the office on Tuesday that week.) Thanks for your attention to this message.
Please be sure to keep an eye out in the Take Outs for further information re: the Christmas scheduling of special services.
BIBLE STUDIES, SUNDAY SCHOOL AND CHURCH MEETINGS:
WHAT IS A PILGRIMAGE? Please join our seminarian Seth Donald at Trinity on Nov 2nd and 9th and at Christ Church Alto on Nov. 16th and 23rd as he takes you on a virtual pilgrimage. Seth will facilitate a discussion on what makes a pilgrimage different from a regular ole trip as well as sharing reflections on his pilgrimage to the Holy Land this past summer. Everyone is more than welcome to come, to learn and experience pilgrimage. Seth is pictured here with the Dome of the Rock/Jerusalem Temple complex in the background.
On November 2nd, Epiphany Mission Church will not hold a regular Eucharist at 10:45. Instead, there will be a MEMORIAL EUCHARIST SERVICE FOR SR. LUCY SHETTERS at 2:00 pm. All are welcome to attend. Epiphany is located at 62 Mountain Street, Sherwood. Contact Kathy Pack for more information: 931-691-3603.
Have you ever wondered how the budget is prepared? Who decides how much funding diocesan entities receive? Where is your contribution making a difference? Be a part of the process. 2015 BUDGET WORKSHOP, Saturday, November 1st, 9:00-11:00am at the Episcopal Diocese of TN Diocesan House, 3700 Woodmont Blvd., Nashville. Fr. THE EPISCOPAL CHURCH WOMEN OF OTEY CLAIRBORNE PARISH IN SEWANEE welcome all interested women of the area to come to the next meeting on Monday, Nov. 3, and enjoy the second monologue in the series on women of the Bible. The luncheon meeting will take place in St. Mark's Hall in the new Otey Clairborne Parish House at noon on Monday, Nov. 3. Stephen Eichler will be facilitating a six week course on Celtic Christianity beginning on December 3rd at 6:00 pm at Christ Church, Tracy City. Participants will learn about the primary elements of Celtic Spirituality, and how to apply these principles to their personal spirituality and Christian life.
We will be using the book "The Cry of the Deer" by David Adam as our study and meditation guide. It is available through Amazon, and Fr. Eichler will also have a few copies available.
The class will last for about 90 minutes each night, running on December 3, 10, and 17, and then on January 7, 14, and 21. For more information, and to sign up for the class, please call Stephen at: 423-619-3328, or email: [email protected].
During Advent, Fr. Chris Bryan, Emeritus Professor of New Testament at The School of Theology, Sewanee, will be leading a class at Trinity on the INCARNATION AS SEEN THROUGH THE GOSPELS. More information will follow.
The 183RD ANNUAL CONVENTION OF THE DIOCESE OF TENNESSEE is hosted in 2015 by St. Philip’s Church, Nashville,
on January 23-24. Delegates from each church must be identified and elected to attend the convention. Please notify Fr. Bill if you have an interest in attending the meeting and in learning how our Diocese “works”. The following is intended as a little “tickler” to stimulate your interest:
Vision for the Diocese of Tennessee
“Open, Obedient, Responsive, Committed” - These four words describe the mission and ministry of the Diocese of Tennessee:
The Diocese of Tennessee is “Open… to the power of God. When we gather, we expect God to show up, and to do mighty things in our midst.”
The Diocese of Tennessee is “Obedient… to the command of our Lord Jesus Christ, who said, ‘Go… and make disciples of all nations, baptizing… and teaching them’ (Matt. 28:19-20); and ‘Go… and proclaim the good news to the whole creation’ (Mk 16:15).”
The Diocese of Tennessee is “Responsive to the needs of the world, because God created this world, and Jesus gave his life for it upon the cross.”
The Diocese of Tennessee is “Committed to our life together as a Christian community for the sake of the life of the world.”
Go to http://edtn.org/annual-convention/ to learn more about convention.
EVENING PRAYER at Trinity - meets Wednesday nights at 6:00 pm.
DREAM GROUP HAS MOVED TO TUESDAYS 11:00 – 11:45 am every week. Join us in the TEC Community Room and learn what your dreams hold. The sessions are led by Marsha Carnahan, Haden Institute Dream Coach and Spiritual Director. Contact Marsha at [email protected] or 931-626-7565 for more information.
CENTERING PRAYER - Tuesdays at 11:45 am following Dream Group in Trinity’s Community Room.
THE BROWN BAG BIBLE STUDY – meets Tuesdays 12:05 – 12:45 in Trinity’s Parish Hall. Everyone is welcome whenever you can make it.
NEWS AND INFO:
The need is becoming greater with each month that we move toward colder weather… and some of the agencies we deliver the items to are preparing for Thanksgiving baskets. FOOD PANTRY SUNDAY is this coming Sunday. Please remember to bring non-perishable food donations to your church. If brining canned goods, it is always a good idea to bring those with “pop-open” tops. Thank you for your generosity!

CEMETERY FUND RAISER – COMMUNITY CENTER SHERWOOD. November 1st from 2-8pm. Hot dogs, chili, corn hole, cake walk, silent auction. Come on out and be part of the fun.
Please be thinking how you can help those in need in our community this upcoming holiday season. Consider volunteering to be a BELL RINGER for the Salvation Army – it would only take a few hours of your time. This fund raising driving will begin on November 26th and run through Christmas Eve. Contact Sylvia James [251-978-4320] or Kathy Pack [931-691-3603] for more information or to volunteer.
Points to Ponder from The Rev. Dr. Judith Hirsch-Fikejs
The Rev. Judith Hirsch-Fikjes is a member of Trinity
and she is the organist at Trinity and Christ Church Alto.
This Season of Ordinary Time is just that: ordinary. It often slips by us with a minimum of
notice, and we go through the weeks thinking that there is “nothing much” happening in the church
calendar. NOT TRUE!! Unseen and unnoticed is the silent but effective action of the Holy Spirit,
doing within us that which is pleasing to the Lord, working toward completion of the work begun in
us by the Lord.
We often forget, or perhaps choose to ignore, the responsibility we have for cooperating with
the work of the Spirit within us and within the Church Universal as well as our own local
congregation. It is not only called “cooperation” but also collaboration. To collaborate means very
specifically to “work together” with each other as well as with the Spirit to reach the goals that will
empower us to be most effective. It means that we are quite literally called to work together like a
well-oiled machine—not mindlessly by any means, but certainly with that efficiency that we demand
of our technology and our industrial mechanisms. If our industry or our technology functioned with
the efficiency level of most Christians inwardly or our congregations outwardly, we would be replaced
with little thought. God calls us to think of others, to put our talents and gifts “out there” to be used
for the greater good, to be putting first God's Kingdom before our own interests, and to trust that “all
these things will be added” to us as God knows our needs.
On November 1 & 2, we remember All Saints and All Souls, those known to God and us and
those known to God alone. Through the centuries God's people have been co-laboring with the Holy
Spirit, some effectively and many with faltering steps and efforts. Yet in God's wisdom, all of us are
important to the Lord and important in the work of the Kingdom of God. May God grant us the grace
to be led by their examples and inspired by their efforts, even as we seek to “tune up” our own witness
and labors as we collaborate with the Lord. Until next time . . .
