The itinerary of The Boat Company

trips is fl exible and spontaneous. With

a skilled and capable crew on the

LISERON and MIST COVE – featuring

a ratio of two guests per one crew

member – the needs and wishes of each

guest can be accommodated without

diffi culty. Hikers can spend as much time

off the boat as they like – hiking the

forest service trails, beachcombing the

tide fl ats, walking the stream beds and

taking leisurely strolls along the beaches

in the company of our trained naturalists.

Fishermen can stream fi sh or take out

skiffs with guides and try their luck.

Canoes and kayaks can explore hidden

coves and scenic shorelines. One doesn’t

just view the magnifi cent land from afar...

one gets out and experiences it!

“...rising out of the sea in soft and billowing folds, were green hills draped in swirls of drifting fog. They seemed incredibly lofty and massive, those hills – a backdrop for a dream sequence...alone and wonder struck, I felt more alive than I had ever felt in my life ...I was a long, long way from home, songs of praise knocked in my head, and I felt a gust of exhilaration.” – E.B. AA bit of history.

In The early 1950s I spent several summers in Southeast Alaska working on a boat assigned

to one of a number of salmon canneries owned by The Great Atlantic & Pacifi c Tea Company

(A&P) a company started by my forbearers. The memories of Southeast’s wild and awesome

beauty never faded.

As a result, in 1979 my wife and I put together a group of friends (fellow foundation trustees,

heads of conservation groups etc.), chartered an ex-Canadian minesweep out of Vancouver,

British Columbia, climbed on board and headed up the coast on a two-week journey to revisit

the area. I’d add we were a disparate group with few “shrinking violets” but my concerns about

differences soon disappeared as we all became totally subsumed by the grandeur of the area in

which we were traveling.

Shortly after that trip (1980) we bought an old wooden-hulled ex-US Navy minesweep,

converted it for use as a tour boat and set out to introduce as many people as we could to

Southeast Alaska.

The Tongass National Forest (at 17 million acres, by far the nation’s largest) is this earth’s last

substantially intact, temperate rainforest. The area it encompasses (land and water) contains 34

million acres (approximately 53,000 square miles) and covers almost 95% of the area known as

“Southeast”. It is home to an incredible array of wildlife; whales, salmon, eagles, sea lions, bear,

sea otters, deer, orcas, puffi ns, et al. Because of its topography of high mountain peaks, glaciers,

deep fi ords, islands and thick forests, roads are few and the only practical way to see and

experience what the Tongass has to offer is by boat (ideal for small ship cruising).

Personally I love the wilderness but, I’ve also reached a stage where at the end of a day fi lled

with activity (walking, canoeing, fi shing, kayaking, hiking, berry picking or simply sitting on my

derriere watching wildlife) I’m ready for a long, hot shower, a gourmet quality dinner, good wine

and a warm, comfortable bed.

It seems many others feel the same as over the years we have grown from a 1 boat, 12-

passenger operation to 2 boats carrying 20 and 24 people respectively.

I’d add we don’t intend to get any larger as we want to adhere to our original intent which was

to introduce a limited number of people in an intimate way to one of the world’s great places

in the hopes that they too would feel the area, with its forests and wildlife still substantially

intact, was worth conserving for the generations to come.
