South Ashland United Methodist Church

I would bet that when you hear Mardi

Gras you think of New Orleans and crazy

parties. However, Mardi Gras has its heritage

in the Christian faith and in particular in

preparation for Lent. Because Lent is a season

of fasting and reflection, historically Mardi Gras, which is the day before Lent

begins, was a time of purging the house of meat and sugar and other rich foods.

Families would prepare and eat all of these foods in order to avoid the

temptation of eating them during Lent.

When the church gathered on Ash Wednesday, the people would have

ashes applied to their foreheads to remind them of their mortality and as a call

to repentance. Thus with houses purged of rich foods and souls cleansed

through repentance, the season of Lent would begin. Christians would fast and

reflect on humanity and our need for Divine love and grace.

We are preparing to enter yet another Lenten season. The call this season

is the same that it has been throughout the millennia since the ancient church

began this practice. We are called to reflect on our own mortality. We are called

to repent of our sin and turn our hearts back to God. We are called to fast in

order to submit our human will to God’s own will. And we are called to reflect

on our need for God’s grace to transform us into His holy people.

So if someone asks you about the ashes on your forehead, tell them it is a

sign of your own mortality and your need for God. When someone asks you

“What are you going to give up for Lent?” remember you are fasting to align

your will with God’s will. And remember this season of fasting and reflection

ends with the greatest celebration known to humanity. Lent always ends with

resurrection and new life.

Something you may not know about the “Raising Our Hands in Praise” Puppet Team Our puppet team raises their hands (and arms) in praise when they present their puppet and stick ministry performances but they use their hands to do much more for Jesus. This year they have made cards for our shut ins, snack bags for the Community Hospice in-care facility and ornaments for nursing home residents. Their latest endeavor was making blankets for the Linus Project. The blankets will be given to children in Kentucky who are seriously ill or traumatized. Our puppet team is actively being the hands and feet of Jesus.

Many things are happening with the approach of the Lent/Easter season in South Ashland United Methodists Children’s program. Our various groups will be featuring new curriculum offerings, and preparing for Easter performances and of course, collecting for and planning the Easter morning egg hunt. This year, a new element that we are “egg-cited” to take part in is our sponsorship of The Hillcrest-Bruce Egg Hunt. We will be providing the eggs and candy for their daycare hunt! We will be collecting eggs and candy March 1st-April 2nd. I am always so excited to be part of such a vital community as we serve God together this Easter!

Easter Colors Lesson Series

Dear Church Family, I pray that all of you are doing well. Thanks so much for your prayers, financial support and allowing your Costa Rica Mission team to be the hands and feet of OUR LORD doing HIS work. This was a wonderful group of Christian Brothers and Sisters this year. We were able to accomplish most of what we were trying to do. After 10 years of work at Pital, I am happy to say that the church has been completed. We and Saint Matthews UMC have been the only two teams working there. The tile for the floor did not come in until we left but all other construction work has been completed along with painting at the church this year. Next year we will be working at the farm and possibly working on a new church construction for the El Mirador area. This is a very poor area where we have worked in the past. It is very close to the farm. The team had wonderful fellowship with the people of Pital. It is sad in a way, that we are finished there, but I know that God has other plans for the team.

The pastor at Pital, Dionel, has reconfirmed his support of the feeding program. They now are feeding children every Sunday after church, feeding around 75 every Saturday in Barrio Jardin, 60 children on Saturday in Nuevo Pital and another 50 in Santa Fe. Dionel has such a heart for the children. The only thing that held them back is funding. I assured him that if they wanted to feed children, then we would continue to support them in this mission. Anyone who wants to contribute to this can mark their check as ‘Pital/Feeding program’. We were able to leave $500.00 with them, plus Mary has other funds that you all have donated. As I talked with Dionel concerning this, I was thinking about the 113 children that we feed here every week. Now all of these children will be fed at least one meal on the weekends. They do get lunch at school which is back in session there now.

We also held VBS and ladies craft/devotion classes. The VBS/Classes went very well under the direction of Alicia and the other wonderful people that were involved. VBS: We served about 150 children total at three different locations. Our theme was “We Belong to God!” and included stories of God’s care for us through the parables of the Prodi-gal Son and Good Samaritan. We used puppets, memory verse games, and crafts to help kids focus on the truth of God’s love.

Pital: 30, Santa Fe: 40 Pital: (invited families from Nuevo Pital): 30 Barrio Jardin/Natalia's: 50 Women’s Ministry: We served about 70 women at three different locations. Our theme was “Prayer is Personal”. We introduced prayer journaling as a way to stay connected to God. Kathy, Debbie, Lisa, and Alicia all gave personal testimonies about dealing with crisis through prayer. The ladies personalized and decorated prayer journals and bookmarks. The ladies had never seen or used decorative (Washi) tape or patterned Duct tape before! Pital: 20, Santa Fe: 12, Pital (invited women from Nueva Pital): 20, Barrio Jardin/Natalia’s: 16 Mary continues with her ministry at the farm. She has the complete support of the Bishop. As you all know, Mary not only takes care of the farm/camp but reaches out to many other areas. She can always use prayers and your financial support. Anyone can give to the farm account and the money will be sent down for ministry work. Should anyone ever have any questions concerning this or the feeding program, please contact me. The trip for next year will be February 3-11, 2018. I am not sure what the cost will be. That will depend on air fare prices. Please pray about being a part of this team. The team will be presenting about the trip on Sunday, March 19, 2017. I hope that you will be able to hear firsthand about all that we did. Once again thanks for your prayers. The whole team felt them as we traveled and worked in Costa Rica. In HIS Love and Service, Eduardo
