David Bagley was thrilled he had the winning silver salmon at the Sebo’s Whidbey Island Coho Derby.

More than the $500 cash and trophy he walked out of the Holmes Harbor Rod & Gun Club with on Saturday, the Greenbank man was relieved to not be booed out of the building.

Squabble over gun rights hits Langley

By BEN WATANABE

South Whidbey Record

America’s fight over gun rights and the state’s proposed initiative for firearm sales regulations came to Langley City Hall on Monday.

What was a civil dis-cussion inside city hall — with no outbursts or inter-ruptions over a charged issue — turned into a small kerfuffle outside council chambers. People opposed to and in favor of Initiative 594 exchanged heated words, gaining the notice of Langley Police Chief Dave Marks though no intervention was nec-essary.

More than 30 people filed into city hall in response to Mayor Fred McCarthy’s proposed city resolution in support of state Initiative 594. The proposed regulation calls to “close loopholes” in firearm sale and transfer on the November ballot.

But opponents of the measure called it unnec-

A 3-year-old Oak Harbor girl is healing after a she was bitten in the face by a pit bull last week.

Her mother, Nikki Breaux, said the bite required 15 stitches and doctors won’t know for a year if little Maliha will need plastic surgery on her face.

“You hear about this hap-pening all the time, but I never thought it would hap-pen to my child,” she said. “If the bite was any higher, she could have lost an eye. It could have been a lot worse.”

Breaux said she had to take the mirror out of Maliha’s room for a couple of days because it scared her to look at her swollen, bruised face.

“She said she doesn’t think she’s pretty anymore,” Breaux said.

Island County Animal Control Officer Carol Barnes said it was the second case in the last few months involving a serious dog bite. She said she hopes the incidents serve as a reminder for dog own-ers and the community that aggressive dogs can pose real danger, especially to children.

Both cases involved pit bulls, but Barnes said she focuses on the dog’s behavior, not the breed.

Breaux agrees.“We’ve had pit bulls,” she

said. “We had one for nine years and never even heard it growl.”

In both incidents, the vic-tims were visiting the home where the dogs lived.

Breaux said the fam-ily was at a friend’s home on North Whidbey and Maliha was throwing a ball for the roommate’s heeler puppy. The roommate’s other dog, a 3-year-old female pit bull, attacked the little girl and bit her on the face.

Breaux said the dog was

still on top of her daughter when she ran to help. She said the bite was out of the blue. Maliha has known and played with the pit bull for years.

“She wasn’t antagonizing it or bothering it or anything like that,” she said.

Breaux said she has since found out that the dog had been attacking farm animals.

Yet her husband, Alan Breaux, said he believes the bite was essentially an acci-dent.

“I just think the dog doesn’t has any self control,” he said, “and lunged for the ball, missed and bit her face.”

Barnes said she investigat-ed and believes there were some warning signs.

“The owner definitely had a

different interpretation of the dog’s behavior,” she said.

Barnes filled out a pre-determination order to deem the dog as a “dangerous dog” under state law. She said the dog’s owner decided to have the dog euthanized after real-izing all the requirements , such as an enclosure, liability insurance and signs ‚ that go along with keeping a danger-ous dog.

In the other case, two dogs attacked a man who was visiting a home on South Whidbey on July 29. Barnes said the man was standing in the front yard when the dogs bit him on the wrist and stomach.

The bite on the wrist was serious and required stitches, Barnes said. She filed the paperwork to deem the dog that caused the serious injury as a dangerous dog.

In this case, the owner decided to keep the dog and followed all the requirements.

As for Maliha, her mother says that she’s healing well, both physically and emotion-ally. She had nightmares the first few nights and was in a lot of pain.

Breaux said she was wor-ried that Maliha would be scared of dogs after such a frightening incident, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. She was crawling all over

the family’s rather protective Great Dane on an afternoon just a few days after the biting incident.

“She has a strong spirit,” Breaux said of her daughter. “She’ll do good, I’m sure.”

Highway collision leaves three hurt

At least three people were hurt in a two-car crash in Freeland on Monday.

The accident occurred shortly before 5 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 525 and Bush Point Road, according to the Washington State Patrol.

A 2002 Toyota Prius with two occupants was southbound on the state route and passing through the intersection when it collided with a 2004 Toyota Avalon, which also had two occu-pants.

The Avalon was north-bound on the highway and making a left turn onto Bush Point Road when the accident occurred, Washington State Patrol Trooper Larry Provoncha said. He confirmed that three people were transported to Whidbey General Hospital with injuries, but their status could not be confirmed by press time Tuesday as state police had not released their identities.

“It doesn’t sound like

it’s life-threatening at this point,” said Provoncha, from the scene of the accident.

Their identities could not be determined from hospital officials due to federal privacy laws.

Fire district emergency responders said a fourth person was also taken to the hospital, but it appeared it was largely as a precautionary measure.

Both vehicles were heavily damaged in the accident, one so much so that firefighters had to use special tools to extri-

cate a passenger. Provoncha said the acci-

dent was still under inves-tigation, but it appeared failure to yield was the cause of the collision. He said speed did not appear to be a factor in the acci-dent.

The crash closed one lane of traffic, with some motorists being detoured to Honeymoon Bay Road, for about one hour.

Retail extended to lumberyard

Retail zoning was approved for a small parcel on Second Street and DeBruyn Avenue in Langley on Monday night.

The Langley City Council unanimously approved a code amend-ment to extend the city’s retail overlay to the for-mer Langley Lumberyard. Historically, the location has seen retail use that existed beyond city code. It was last used as the Living Green store and currently is occupied by Sundance Bakery.

“That whole corner’s been retail since God cre-ated it,” said Councilman Bruce Allen.

A store’s relocation prompted the city’s Planning Advisory Board and city council to take another look at the issue of extending retail out-side of downtown. Sarah Boin asked the council to consider it so she

could move her business, Wander on Whidbey, from its downtown location on Anthes Avenue to the for-mer Langley Lumberyard building. Her grand plan conceived with husband Patrick Boin is to run the store in one area of the building and her husband to open the Salish Sea Cafe in another — a next-door husband-and-wife business tandem.

The planning board initially was resistant to the amendment, but relented with that specific area, which was originally zoned for neighbor-hood business — offices, professional services, restaurants. Three other neighborhood business areas remain — at the edge of town on Third Street/Brooks Hill Road, on Camano Avenue across from Langley Middle School and the fair-grounds, and the Edgecliff and Langley Motel lots.

Jeff Arango, Langley’s director of Community Planning, said some of the general concerns with extending retail to all of the areas included erod-ing the downtown area, building design and exist-ing vacancies in prime locations. He dismissed the third as “extenuating circumstances,” citing the Dog House Tavern and Mike’s Place buildings on First Street and Anthes Avenue as needing major upgrades and renovations to be within city code. Arango said he did not think extending retail to select areas would take away from the vibrancy of the commercial core, a belief shared by one Langley resident who lives near the Langley Lumberyard.

“Allowing retail out-side downtown will not detract from the down-town,” said Ross Chapin. “I think it will strengthen it.”

Five people spoke about the amendment

during the public hearing, and all were in favor of it.

“That entire area was built and developed for retail-type sales,” said Jesse Brighton.

Looking for iconic winter photos

Whidbey News Group is holding a contest to find a cover photo for its season-al visitor magazine, Winter on Whidbey & Camano.

Due to the success of the 2013 reader-photo contest, we decided to host the competition again this year. We’re looking for iconic images that tell the story of life in Island County between October and March.

Scenics, events, fun stuff to do — anything and everything that says, “This is the place to visit this winter.”

The rules are simple. Pictures must depict life on Whidbey or Camano islands, be less than two years old and should be at least 1 megabyte in size. Vertical images are preferred but horizon-tal images are allowed. Deadline is 5 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8.

Photographer of the winning image will receive a check for $100 and all bragging rights associated having their shot on the cover of the 2014 Winter on Whidbey & Camano.

Submit entries by send-ing them to Justin Burnett at jburnett@whidbeynews group.com.

By entering this contest, you acknowledge that Whidbey News Group may or may not opt to publish submitted images. Entries should include name of the photogra-pher, information about the photo (who, what, where and when) and a contact email address.

Athlete, author, speak-er, and 2012 National Geographic Adventurer of the Year Jennifer Pharr Davis is coming to Whidbey Island later this month.

On Saturday, September 27, the Coupeville and Clinton libraries will host Pharr Davis at 11 a.m. in Coupeville and at 3 p.m. at the Clinton Community Hall at 6411 Central Ave. Both events are free and open to the public.

Pharr Davis has logged over 12,000 miles on six different continents, including thru-hikes of the 2,650-mile Pacific Crest Trail, the 485-mile Colorado Trail, the 275-mile Long Trail in Vermont, numerous trails in Europe, and the 2,185-

mile Appalachian Trail three times.

In 2011, Pharr Davis wanted to test her physi-cal limits and with the help of her husband Brew and a dedicated group of friends, she set the fastest known time (male or female) on the Appalachian Trail by hik-ing 47 miles a day for 46 days straight.

She will show slides and share stories, answer questions, and read excerpts from her new book “Called Again.” Copies of her book will be available for purchase and autograph after the program.

For her adventures, Pharr Davis has been featured in the New York Times, the Washington Post, NPR’s Talk of the Nation, ESPN, and the

CBS Early Show. She is founder and owner of Blue Ridge Hiking Company, an Asheville, North Carolina-based guiding service.

A rural event center permit issued to Whidbey Wayfarer Farm in Langley has been appealed by neighbors who aren’t too excited about wed-dings in their Bayview Road neighborhood.

Their concerns center around the parking, noise and other issues associated with holding large events in a rural area.

Island County Hearings Examiner Michael Bobbink approved the permit in June, subject to conditions of approv-al which included a noise miti-gation plan.

The neighbors since appealed the decision to the Island County Board of Commissioners who listened to arguments for and against Monday and plan to render a decision at their Sept. 22 regu-lar meeting.

Larry Kwarsick, a South Whidbey resident and private planner who argued Monday for those appealing the deci-sion, said that the property’s lack of noise and visibility screening was concerning.

“A rural event center is a small-scale tourist use,” Kwarsick said, adding that for that reason the property own-ers should be “mandated to obscure” the weddings from the neighbors.

The appellants listed on the appeal are Zachary Wolfram, Nathan Buck and Karyle Kramer.

Attorney David Bricklin argued for property owners Kelly and Richard Russo that the farm is well suited for the

use they are requesting and that the events would be good for the local economy.

In April of 2013, neighbors complained that the Russos were holding weddings on their farm without proper per-mitting, according to county documents.

The county issued the tem-porary use permit allowing 18 weddings in 2013. The permit was issued permanently by the county hearings examiner in June, but was appealed by neighbors who are concerned about the traffic, parking, noise and other issues associated with rural events.

In response to these types of concerns, Island County commissioners unanimously

approved an ordinance in December that allowed the permitting for events on agri-cultural properties.

Planning Director David Wechner was approached by a group of residents at the time who asked the county to come up with a set of guidelines that would both allow for the events but protect adjacent properties.

Public comment was taken in November for the Wayfarer Farm application, with 11 com-ments in support of the permit and four in opposition, accord-ing to county documents.

The Russos intend to have no more than 120 guests at their events, which require a review process under the ordi-nance.

Response Salmon stream a no-growth ploy Editor,

With respect to your recent article regarding some disagreement on fish and wildlife protections cur-rently being discussed by the Island County commission-ers: what Commissioners Helen Price-Johnson and Jill Johnson apparently do agree upon is a plan to designate as a “salmon stream” Bos/Swan Stream, which typical-ly contains water only during the winter months when it rains profusely, and then it runs into Bos/Swan Lake on the west side of Whidbey Island.

Relevant are these scien-tific facts: salmon have never existed in the past in that stream, there aren’t any salmon there now, and there never will be. State experts on the subject confirmed this to be true when specifically queried on this point by a community member at an Island County commission-ers hearing on the proposed designation.

So, why do the commis-sioners want this stream des-ignated a “salmon stream?” By doing so they can use this phony baloney designation as a weapon against the City of Oak Harbor to prevent the city from ever expand-ing its urban growth area, or UGA, westward on Whidbey Island. Interestingly, behind the scenes, actively working to achieve this Machiavellian designation is former Island County commissioner Angie Homola, who additionally desires Bos/Swan Lake to have a permanent open channel connecting it to Puget Sound.

Yes, when we elected Commissioner Jill Johnson

we really did have no idea who we had elected. Just think what it would be like to have a third Democrat join Johnson & Johnson in Coupeville.

Island Transit fares a fair proposal Editor,

1. Paratransit and bus cuts are required because we can-not afford a “fare free” transit system. Folks are in a bind resulting from Island Transit service cuts — mismanage-ment is the cause. Solutions must come from our transit system administration and board of directors. Public concerns and suggestions are needed. Transit users wonder why they cannot pay for, or toward, their needed transportation.

2. The Island Transit Board held an emergency meeting this past Friday morning; emergency route changes have been made and route reevaluations are underway. It will take three months to implement them. Meetings with transit users are being scheduled to explain, understand and fix the problems. It will take months to fix the money

shortage. Management eval-uation and board oversight are in progress. Hiring yet another consultant won’t fix the problems. That would take months and thousands of dollars. Changed admin-istration philosophy and decisive board direction is needed now.

3. Transit administration and the board of directors share responsibility for the problems. They are scram-bling to correct problems that would have been pre-vented by much closer attention to details for years. Providing needed transit services to the citizens of Island County can and must be done promptly.

4. Our previous state sena-tor had facilitated special financial grants to Island Transit for years. That faded with her defeat. We must now operate our transit sys-tem like the rest of our state. Island Transit can generate the money for transporta-tion services that had been unrealistically “fare free” for years. It had been concluded that asking transit bus and paratransit users to pay any part of the cost of their trans-portation was “confrontation-al.” Also, allowing advertis-ing on transit vehicles was offensive to our “rural char-

acter.”5. Island Transit adminis-

tration and its board of direc-tors must cause changes to our transit system that will provide practicable trans-portation services. Transit users must be allowed to pay something for transit servic-es. Nothing is free.

Thanks for the story on WILL Editor,

On behalf of the members of Whidbey Island Local Lending (WILL), I would like to thank you for your excel-lent article and editorial. You captured the essence of what we are trying to accomplish.

For people who are think-ing about applying for a loan through WILL, it is worth emphasizing that we do not make grants and that all but the smallest loans so far have carried interest rates of between 4 and 6 percent. A business plan with real-istic financial projections is usually required. Application materials and information on the process for obtaining a loan may be requested by sending an email to me at [email protected].

Grandpa’s farming practices don’t cut it

Sound off

Compromise. As proposed in The Record’s recent editorial, what could be fairer? But does compromise always work for everyone? Consider the wild native prairies with their carpets of wildflowers found nowhere else. At the time of Euro-American settlement of Whidbey Island, there were about 7,800 acres of this rare habitat on Central Whidbey. That’s about 7 percent of the island. According to the

Whidbey Camano Land Trust, there are now less than 100 acres left. That’s less than one-tenth of 1 percent of Whidbey and about 1 percent of the original prairie. So, let’s compro-mise and only protect half of the remaining prairie now, and half of that half during the upcoming 2016 comprehensive plan update. And half of that half of a half of less than 1 per-cent of the original prairie in 10 years at the next comprehen-sive plan update. That will leave less than one-sixteenth of 1 percent of the original prairie — less than five acres. In some situations, “compromise” is just another word for extinction.

But what about farmers? Shouldn’t we be worried about “our” farmers going extinct, as a county commissioner did at a recent hearing on the fish and wildlife ordinance update? The few farmers who constantly tell the commissioners that to continue farming they need to dredge creeks and streams and shoot beavers mostly seem to be old-fashioned. The model for the future is the burgeoning farmers markets. They’re full of farmers, including young, new farmers, who by and large farm in ways that don’t require treating our streams and creeks as drainage ditches. These farmers don’t seem to be endangered at all. Sure, they have their ups and downs. Some do well, some don’t. But if you watch the farm-ers markets it sure looks like there are more young farmers starting than quitting.

Farming on the island is in no danger. But farming like great-great-grandpa did, back when we knew and cared considerably less about clean water, fish, wild animals and plants, is. As these farmers repeat over and over to the county commissioners, they work really, really hard and make very little money. Like an ancient or relict species with a narrow gene pool faced with a changed environment, they just don’t seem able to adapt to the changed conditions of today’s world; a world where we recognize that we made serious mistakes in the way we’ve treated the land and water on which we depend, the environment of which we are a part and in which we live.

We can’t pretend nothing has changed if we want to cor-rect the damage our mistakes have caused. That’s really the question we face as a people, as a society. Do we continue making the same mistakes over and over again because that’s what we’ve always done?

Have a Strong Back?Selling your home means

you will bear a heavy responsibility – setting the asking price. Some owners believe their agent sets the price. Not so. The agent is an invaluable information resource – but does not set the price. You do.

Your agent may implement a brilliant marketing program, attracting many prospective buyers to your home. Prospects may get excited and see themselves owning your home, but the ultimate sale will occur only if you have priced the home fairly.

Begin by asking your agent for details about all sales in your area over the past twelve months. Eliminate those which sold a the highest and lowest prices. Next, compare the fi nancing, any special incentives offered, and the conditions of those homes already sold. Look at the sale times too, an consider eliminating the longest (overpriced) and the shortest (underpriced).

Take a look at the price variance among those which sold. Try averaging their sale prices, taking into account differences in square footage. Ask your agent which sales appear most typical or similar to the home you are offering. What was the asking price to sale price percentage? If most homes sold within 3% of their asking price, be careful not to set a price more than 3% above the market.

Price our home high and you may wait. Price it right and you will move!

By BEN WATANABE South Whidbey Record

For the second week in a row, South Whidbey football allowed an opponent to score 30-plus points — a recipe for the Falcons’ second straight loss.

Anacortes used a diverse offense to overwhelm South Whidbey as the Seahawks left Waterman’s Field with a 32-17 victory Sept. 12. On defense, the Falcons struggled with the Seahawks’ three-head-ed monster of Carson Buckles, Joe D’Amelio and Jullien Collins, as well as quarterback Camden McLaughlin slinging deep balls to Ty Johnson, who finished with three touchdowns. Seahawk head coach Dustin South credited the victory to his team’s ability to extend drives and fill in for sidelined players.

“We were able to pick up some key first downs,” South said. “We got into some third-and-long situa-tions and were able to pick those up and that kept drives going for us.”

“Our defense kind of bent, but didn’t give up big plays,” he added, referring to what was his takeaway from the win.

Starting with the first posses-sion, the Seahawks marched down-field on four straight runs. South Whidbey’s defense dug in, however, and had Anacortes facing a fourth down with 3 yards to go, but a false start penalty on the Falcons kept the Seahawks’ drive alive. That set up McLaughlin’s 27-yard strike to Johnson for the first score, but not the last.

The Falcons gave up a 15-0 lead before a long drive to open the second quarter resulted in South Whidbey points. Relying on senior running back Deven Damerau, the Falcons trucked downfield until a slip put them at fourth down with 15 yards to go. Falcon head coach Chris Tormey called a timeout and dialed up a play for first-year tight end Mo Hamsa, a senior. Parker Collins, the Falcons’ quarterback, saw him flash into the middle and sailed the ball to him for a critical first down at the Seahawks’ 10-yard line. Collins punched in the touch-

down with a dive to the left pylon, putting South Whidbey on the scoreboard nearly 16 minutes into the game.

Anacortes answered almost immediately. Seahawk running back Jullien Collins bolted 65 yards for the score and a 22-7 lead.

South Whidbey got a big boost and stopped a potential score just before halftime. With the Seahawks marching toward the Falcons’ end zone, junior Charlie Patterson picked off an end zone throw intended for Johnson.

The second half opened with a long drive by the Falcons. Collins, Hamsa and Damerau proved a potent trio. But mistakes, like a cou-ple of high snaps and a sack, led the Falcons to settle for a field goal by Anthony Eveland.

Anacortes made quick work of its

next drive that resulted in another Johnson touchdown catch and a 32-10 lead.

A short kickoff by the Seahawks sent the ball into Damerau’s hands, who snapped off a 79-yard touch-down return, inspiring the Falcon faithful to cheers.

Neither team scored in the fourth quarter. The Seahawks continued to go for the first down on fourth-and-long situations — Anacortes’ first punt wasn’t until midway through the fourth quarter — losing posses-sion at the start of the final period.

But South Whidbey was also sty-mied on its drives, again by mis-takes including low snaps.

Clinton residents Zane and Graham Vanderwood, also known as “The Smash Brothaz,” are looking to extend their dancing family.

On Saturday, Sept. 27, they will hold auditions for their March performance at Whidbey Island Center for the Arts.

According to the Vanderwoods, it’s all about hav-ing fun.

The pair does not expect people to show up with a prior dance history or knowledge of hip-hop moves.

“We are just looking for people who want to dance, anybody who has a passion for it and is motivated,” said Graham Vanderwood.

He added that he and his younger brother are more than willing to teach aspiring dancers of any age.

“I just think it will be fun to get people from the community and dance with [them] and get them involved,” said Zane Vanderwood.

Auditions will be held on Saturday, Sept. 27 at Island Dance. Ages 6-11 will audition from 2-2:45 p.m. while ages 12-17 will audition from 2:45-3:30 p.m. and ages 18 and over will audition from 3:30-4:15 p.m.

Management options still being sought

By JANIS REIDSouth Whidbey Record

A plan to revamp Greenbank Farm and increase its economic viabil-ity won’t be considered by the Port of Coupeville until next year.

The plan, presented by Island County Washington State University Extension officials, aims to nudge the financially struggling farm further into the world of “edu-tourism” providing an active educational facility that could be used by students and visi-tors alike.

Port officials said they are bound by the district’s current management agree-ment, but want to discuss the plan in the future.

WSU Extension staff said they believe the port should be more excited about the proposal.

“I was disappointed in the response,” Director Tim Lawrence said. “It seems they left the door open, but not very wide.”

The port is juggling bud-getary priorities under their ever-tightening funding con-straints. Greenbank Farm has a problematic sewage system that will need an overhaul, and the Coupeville Wharf has been wracked with storm- and age-related maintenance problems over the past year.

The port has only $180,000 in its undedicated fund, which it needs to last the next three years until the current bond for Greenbank Farm is repaid.

Currently the port pays approximately $106,000 annually on the bond.

Lawrence said that WSU’s

proposal for Greenbank Farm will likely take several years to realize, so getting started soon is key.

“They don’t see a vision,” Lawrence said.

The WSU vision includes expansion of the school’s curricula in agriculture, food systems and hospitality to Greenbank Farm.

Students could attend courses in on-site classrooms, receive valuable hands-on experience, complete intern-ships and earn small farming certifications, according to Lawrence.

“I think it’s a great oppor-tunity for Whidbey Island to have a permanent four-year school here,” Port of Coupeville Executive Director Tim McDonald said.

However, the port is not in a position to discuss the WSU proposal until their current lease agreement with the Greenbank Farm Management Group expires in June 2015 and a new farm manager is selected.

“It’s really not the time,” McDonald said.

McDonald said the port is accepting management appli-cations through Sept. 24, but hasn’t received any applica-

tions as of press time Friday.McDonald said he thinks

the port commissioners’ response to WSU, written by Commissioner Mike Diamanti, was positive.

“I think the port board is enthusiastic about working with WSU to establish a signif-icant presence at Greenbank Farm,” McDonald said. “But there are business issues that need to be taken care of first.”

Island County Economic Development Council Executive Director Ron Nelson said that these types of educational positions would inject good, profes-sional-wage jobs into the county that fit with its rural character and charm.

Making Greenbank Farm more of an educational facil-ity would create revenue dur-ing the island’s non-tourist months, Nelson said. Plus it would diversify the types of revenue coming into the local economy, which cur-rently balances precariously

between the Navy base and home construction.

“We really need to diver-sify,” Nelson said.

Nelson said he under-stands the port’s hesitance to jump on the bandwagon.

“They have a fiscal responsibility,” Nelson said. “They’re saying, ‘We have a money problem,’ and that’s fair. However, we have other opportunities. How do we make this a win-win for the current tenants, the county and Greenbank Farm?”

For example, the port could use rural development funds to assist Greenbank in building necessary infra-structure and fix the sewage problems currently faced by the farm, Nelson said.

“There’s a lot of positive potential.”

“It is so tough to grow the appropriate businesses in Island County,” Nelson said. “It’s very, very hard, but this fits.”

Whidbey artists are sew-ing seeds of creativity in an art exhibition entitled “When Your Plow is a Paintbrush Two: Artists Interpret the Farm.”

Artists were tasked with depicting their interpretation of farms or rural life.

The title of the exhibition was inspired by the Dwight D. Eisenhower quote, “Farming looks mighty easy when your plow is a paint-

brush and you’re a thousand miles from the cornfield.”

Marian Myszkowski, director of program and fund development at Goosefoot, said there are a wide variety of pieces in the show includ-ing oil and acrylic paintings, watercolors, fabric art, pho-tography and mixed media.

Myszkowski said the art complements the farm tour’s objective, to highlight the abundance of Whidbey’s natural resources and local producers.

“I think farms, especially

on Whidbey Island, in addi-tion to feeding us through the produce that they grow and the animals they raise, also feed our souls. They really add to the beauty of the landscape—whether it’s the geographical nature…or the animals on the farm,” she said. “That’s what I think the artists have brought out— the beauty of the farmland itself and how important it is to [preserve]. But also the cuteness of the animals and how it adds to the quality of life here.”

The display features works from a dozen or so Whidbey Island artists including Pat Brookes, Richard Engstrom,

Richard Evans, Denis Hill, Carol Barton Jerome, Lucy Johnson, Deon Matzen, Stacey Neumiller, Anna

Mastronardi Novak, Kay Parson, Karen Schroeder, Kim Tinuviel, Diane Tompkinson and Angele Woolery. The Whidbey Island Sketchers, a group of local drawing enthusiasts, also have an installation of 40 to 50 small sketches created spe-cifically for the show.

The Bayview Cash Store will be hosting the exhibi-tion from Sept. 4 through Oct. 5 on both floors of the hub. It is presented in con-junction with the ninth annu-al Whidbey Island Farm Tour. This is the second group art show organized by local nonprofit organiza-tion Goosefoot.

The Farm Tour, a free self-guided tour of 14 Whidbey farms, takes place Sept. 20-21.

During spring, summer and fall, Whidbey Island is a popular choice for weddings.

Sherrye Wyatt, with Whidbey and Camano Islands Tourism, says the island is known as a wedding destination.

Now, she and other partici-pants in the annual Weddings on Whidbey and Events Tour want to show prospective brides and grooms just how magical a winter wedding on the island can be.

The Wedding Tour, set for Nov. 8, is a showcase for all that Whidbey Island has to offer — from cater-ers to photographers, deejays to florists. Many vendors who par-ticipate in the Wedding Tour are coming together to throw a dream winter wedding on Whidbey for one lucky couple. All for free.

“It’s a new way to showcase the region,” Wyatt said.

Kim Winjum, associate publish-er of Whidbey News Group and a member of the Freeland Chamber of Commerce board of directors, came up with the idea of holding a contest to help promote the island as a wedding and event destination.

“I thought this was a win-win, so I went to them and I pitched

the idea of having this contest,” Winjum said. “They loved it.”

“One of the benefits of promot-ing weddings and having weddings come to our island is they do stay longer and spend more than many other tourists, and come back again and again,” Wyatt said.

Whidbey News Group is a co-sponsor of the contest, involved in advertising and promotion.

Winners of the contest will receive a wedding to be held Jan. 17, 2015. The prize includes a venue, photographer, music, make-up, wedding planner, invitations and more.

Anyone over the age of 18 who is eligible to marry in the state of Washington is allowed to enter. Entrants must tell their story in 250 words or fewer. Deadline for

entries is Oct. 31.All of the entries will then be sub-

ject to online voting by the public. The voters will decide the top 10 couples.

From the top 10, the winning couple will be picked randomly during the Weddings on Whidbey and Events Tour.

The first 100 couples to enter the contest will receive a free general admission ticket for November’s Wedding Tour.

Everyone who votes will be entered for a chance to win a week-end trip to Whidbey Island, the win-ner of which will also be randomly chosen during the tour.

Gloria Mickunas, a wedding planner who is offering her ser-vices to the winning couple, was involved in the creation of the con-test.

Mickunas said she is most look-ing forward to reading the stories

submitted.“You have to encapsulate why

people should care and vote for you to win your winter wedding on Whidbey,” she said.

Wyatt agrees.“It will be interesting to see

what kinds of people enter, where they live and what connection they already have to the island, or if they are interested because they want the wedding,” she said.

Vendors involved in the tour were approached and asked if they wanted to participate in the contest. Many said “yes.”

One of the main reasons given by those who declined was because they were already booked for wed-dings in January.

“It’s a wonderful idea, and it shows the generosity people on the island have to offer,” Wyatt said.

“That’s what’s so great about Whidbey Island,” Mickunas said.

“We have this sense of commu-nity and belonging and we want to support one another, and that’s what the tour’s all about … and pro-moting Whidbey Island for year-round weddings and events.”

By KATE DANIEL South Whidbey Record

When a child named Craig wrote a letter to Santa in 1976, he could not have known that his request for a visit would lead to gifts for thousands of fellow kids in need.

Craig’s letter, which read in part “Mom said you got lost last year … we really missed you, especially my little sisters,” may not have reached the North Pole, but it did make it to Seattle res-taurant owner Dick “Buck” Francisco, a retired Marine with a generous spirit.

Francisco created the Forgotten Children’s Fund in honor of Craig and kids like him — kids for whom Christmas meant sadness more often than glee.

In addition to the Fund, which continues to grant Christmas cheer to over 2,900 kids and 800 families across the state, Francisco developed the M-Bar-C Ranch on Whidbey Island which would become a 52-acre Wild West oasis for kids and families in need.

The ranch’s numerous volunteers, 17 donated equine partners and various Western-themed buildings offer visitors solace from financial, mental, emotional or physical struggles.

“The best thing for the inside of a kid is the outside of a horse” was the philoso-phy of the ranch’s original owners, a group of urban Seattle-area families, includ-ing Francisco, who wanted their children to experience rural recreation outside the bustling city limits.

The philosophy was para-mount in Francisco’s deci-sion to dedicate the ranch to special needs and disadvan-taged children after his own had reached adulthood. It remains a guiding principle today.

Visitors entering the ranch may feel as if they’ve been transported to a differ-ent time, one devoid of day-to-day struggles and filled instead with friendly cow-girls and cowboys eager to enable each child “to be the most kid they can be” with horse rides, tractor rides, crafts, a costume room, “cowboy lunch” and other Western-themed activities, all of which are free.

From Friday, Sept. 19 to Sunday, Sept. 21, the ranch

will be holding its annual Barn Sale Fundraiser in partnership with the South Whidbey Lions Club.

Proceeds from the fun-draiser will go towards the M-Bar-C Ranch programs such as the Day of Western Fun, South Whidbey Lions Club scholarships and hear-ing and sight programs and the Forgotten Children’s Fund. This year’s event will also include Barnyard Bingo at 9:30 a.m. Friday. Tickets for bingo cost $5 in advance.

Dale Kerslake, ranch volunteer and program coordinator, explained that fundraisers such as the Barn Sale are essential to the all-volunteer-operated ranch and added that most of the funds raised for the ranch will go toward their Day of Western Fun program.

“We’ll use [funds raised] to continue to do what we do which is putting smiles on the faces of some pretty spe-cial kids,” said Kerslake.

According to Kerslake, the ranch hosts between 1,500 to 2,000 kids each summer as well as numerous parent to parent support groups.

“Our goal is to let them forget whatever it is they are facing, whether it is childhood cancer or autism,

and just allow them to have a day of fun and be a kid,” Kerslake said. “The parents get such a charge out of it because they see their child who may be severely disabled and in a wheelchair with a feeding tube, or whatever might be going on in their life, get on a horse and the parents are out here taking pictures. … It’s an incredible, wonderful thing to see.”

Kerslake said that, for her and other volunteers, the most rewarding aspect of the work is witnessing a moment of triumph and joy in a child’s life. She recalled a moment in the spring in which an autistic child, who was initially afraid to get near the horse, let alone go for a ride, overcame his fear. The boy’s father, Kerslake recalled, coaxed his son onto the loading deck. At first, the

boy sat there and stared.“Finally, he reached out

and started stroking the horse and we just saw this little bit of a smile start,” Kerslake recalled. “The horse just gave a big sigh and put his head on the little boy’s knee. The boy took the horse’s head in both his hands and kissed the horse.”

According to Kerslake, the

boy’s father snapped several photos in disbelief.

“Horses are sometimes magic like that,” Kerslake said. “They form a connection with these children that we don’t understand. They know this child is something special.”

tions “in their entirety.” Council members Rene

Neff and Jim Sundberg opposed changing the resolution to a discussion item, and said they were supportive of I-594. As a discussion item, the coun-cil did not take action on it.

McCarthy said he was part of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, and that he was surprised by the backlash of his pro-posed resolution.

“I made the assump-tion that it would have overwhelming support,” McCarthy said. “Obviously that’s not the case.”

Of the six people who spoke about the city’s reso-lution, four were against it and against I-594. Pam Fick, wear-ing a navy blue “Yes on I-594” shirt and a Moms D e m a n d Action button, supported the mayor’s pro-posal.

“This initiative is no different than what was already on the books, but closes loopholes through gun shows and online sales,” she said.

Police Chief Marks was asked to speak about the issue by the public. He read a letter he had pre-viously sent to McCarthy in which Marks stated he was opposed to I-594 and the city’s proposed resolu-

tion. “It’s been my observa-

tion that criminals are obtaining firearms through

burglary,” he said.

Once the crowd had its chance to speak and the council mem-bers gave their posi-tions, the dis-cussion ended and nearly half the crowd left.

Just outside Langley City Hall, however, some of the once -po ised

people got into a heated argument about what I-594 will accom-plish. Shortly after Marks stepped out, however, the two parties separated.

McCarthy said the res-olution will likely come before the city council for a first reading in October, ahead of the election.

Other prize winners were: Alan Starr, 8.94 pounds; Kevin Ohm, 8.94 pounds (deter-mined by the later weigh-in time); and Nai Saephan, 8.75 pounds.

Early in the morning, Possession Sound between Mukilteo and Edmonds was peppered with fishing boats as far as the eye could see from the ferry. The west side of Whidbey Island was more sparse, but pockets were packed with hopeful anglers. Bush Point and Lagoon Point were busy in the morning but water traffic tapered by mid-afternoon.

The Everett Public

Ramp catch report by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife showed 378 coho caught by 464 anglers on Sept. 13; 86 anglers land-ing 91 coho at the Edmonds Marina; and 38 coho caught by 73 anglers at the Cornet Bay Public Ramp in Oak Harbor.

Despite complaints from anglers that the salmon were not in the area in droves yet — for a litany of reasons from water temperature to rainfall — 104 salmon were weighed in for the derby.

“Everybody says they’re

late,” Bagley said through a wide grin. “I disagree.”

An estimated 300 people competed in the Whidbey fishing fight. Participation saw an uptick from the past few years, adding money to the scholarship funds for South Whidbey High School graduates.

During the prize announce-ments and raffle call, the club’s hall was packed with every seat and every table occupied, leaving dozens to stand.

“It was a really good year,” Lutch said.

“It worked out great,” he said. Bringing Clinton residents together was

the impetus for the festival, put on by the council, the Clinton Chamber of Commerce and Clinton Progressive Association.

Doug Hofius, a council member and one of

Seeing zucchini fly through the air was a major attraction for a handful of children (and an equal number of adults). The trick for the launcher seemed to be pulling back as far as possible and staying low to send the produce a hundred yards out to center field.

NOTICEWashington State law requires wood sellers to provide an invoice (re- ceipt) that shows the s e l l e r ’s a n d bu ye r ’s name and address and the date delivered. The invoice should also state the price, the quantity delivered and the quan- tity upon which the price is based. There should be a statement on the type and quality of the wood. When you buy firewood write the seller’s phone number and the license plate number of the de- livery vehicle. The legal measure for firewood in Washington is the cord or a fraction of a cord. Estimate a cord by v isual iz ing a four-foot by eight-foot space filled with wood to a height of four feet . Most long bed pickup trucks have beds that are close to the four-foot by 8-foot dimension. To make a f i r ewood complaint, call 360-902- 1857.
