Island County commissioners ponder a future without fireworksBoard majority leans toward ban

By DEBRA VAUGHNWhidbey News Group

The hot, dry weather this year

has Island County commissioners considering a complete ban on the sale and ignition of fireworks.

Commissioner Helen Price Johnson first raised the issue, not-ing that it seems absurd the county fire marshal could call a burn ban limiting all kinds of fires, but not fire-

works. During a Wednesday meet-ing she floated a change that would give the fire marshal the ability to do so under emergency conditions.

Price Johnson also suggested lim-iting personal use of fireworks to just the Fourth of July. Commissioner Richard Hannold said he would sup-

port a complete ban on fireworks countywide.

“We should follow suit to our close neighbors who have banned them outright,” he said. “There’s always a burn ban every year.”

“To say you can’t have a campfire to cook your chicken, but you can

set off explosives that burn a few thousand degrees is insane.”

Over a 16-day period this month, South Whidbey High School biology teacher Greg Ballog and 21 science teachers from across Washington will work beside scientists in research laboratories at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and partner sites throughout Seattle.

“Our goal is for teachers to bring back what they learn over the summer to help jump-start their students’ knowledge of bioscience and research and perhaps kindle their interest in jobs or careers in science,” said Nancy Hutchison, Ph.D., director of the Science Education Partnership.

The entire SEP summer program takes place over a 16-day period in July. Teachers will receive a jumpstart ses-

sion to learn laboratory basics and then spend about half of their time working one-on-one with a scientist-mentor in a research laboratory on projects tailored to their interests. Lab work during the past several years has focused on such topics as protein structure, stem cells, gene regulation, yeast genetics and fruit-fly development.

Participating institutions this year, in addition to Fred Hutchinson, include the corporate biotechnology firm Amgen, as well as Seattle Children’s Research Institute, the University of Washington Genome Sciences Department, UW Medicine South Lake Union and the joint UW/Hutchinson Center Molecular and Cellular Biology doctoral research program.

The Whidbey Island Eagles’ annual plant sale raffle had a unique item this year: a football signed by Seattle Seahawks quar-terback Russell Wilson.

Purchased and donated by Tom Lorenson, the ball was an added prize

to the raffle and gener-ated thousands of dollars of additional proceeds for the event, most of which are given back to the community through donations to South Whidbey charities.

Linda Wasickanin sold the winning ticket to her fellow employee at Whidbey General Hospital, Kyrsti Synchak, at Whidbey General Hospital.

Kyrsti and her husband, Jeff, are Seahawks sea-son ticket holders and attended the Super Bowl, in Phoenix, Ariz.

BUY! BUY! BUY!

Do you invest in the stock market? When do you buy - when prices are low or high? Looking for a new TV? If the model you want is on sale at $100 off, would you wait until the sale was over to buy? If you wanted to serve steak to your family and noticed it was on sale at $2.99 a pound, would you respond with a trip to the store?

Thought about buying a home? Don’t wait! Interest rates recently dropped to the lowest level in nearly four years, according to a leading mortgage company. This presents an awesome opportunity.

So, where do you begin? Choose an agent, then set an appointment with a mortgage lender. No longer is it necessary to begin a home search without knowing whether you qualify for a mortgage. No longer must you guess at the price range for which you quality.

Provide the loan offi cer with details about your income sources and any debts you may have. Be prepared to provide names, addresses, and account numbers. Discuss openly any factors that may have an adverse impact on the lender’s decision.

Once you’ve obtained a fi rm loan commitment, begin your home search with confi dence. Sellers will respond more favorably to your purchase offer due to your strength as a buyer, and your low interest rate will put you in more home for the money.

Former resident has shipwreck near Greenbank

“Wet, weary and cold, 77-year-old Arthur Wallin of Everett waded ashore from his smashed boat early Wednesday morning of last week and received aid and comfort from the Henry Davis family of Greenbank.

“The elderly Everett man’s troubles began Tuesday afternoon while he was fishing off Bush Point in his 18-foot cabin cruiser and his inboard motor quit.

“Wallin said that his anchor rope appar-ently broke during the night and his boat drifted on the rocks where waves smashed it up and down until it was holed. He said he grabbed his glasses and a camera and waded ashore.”

Two quit Langley’s city council

“Two Langley City Council members have resigned, one mem-ber citing differences between the legislative and executive branch of the city council and the other refusing com-ment.

“Councilmen Richard Johnson and Scott Connor resigned

independently of each other. Johnson submitted his resigna-tion Friday and Connor resigned Monday morning.

“While Johnson had ‘no comment,’ Connor said he ran for the council to try to help the council and mayor work well together but has had a ‘real frustrat-ing time.’

“‘I can’t pin it down,’ ” he said. ‘The easiest thing to do is to point fingers. I just won’t do that. I gave it my very best and I wasn’t able to accomplish what I had hoped.’ “

Rescued diver thanks saviors

“At about 6:10 p.m. on June 5, Suzanne Payseur died while scuba diving in the Langley Small Boat Harbor.

“By 6:16 p.m. she was alive again.

“While diving with her husband, Mike, Payseur got into trouble underwater. After signaling that she needed to surface, Payseur ascended rap-idly from 40 feet down. By the time she made it into open air, she was incoherent and in respi-ratory distress. Mike Payseur swam pulling his wife more than 100 yards in full scuba gear to get her to the har-bor’s dock, where resi-dents Tim Nolis, Tom Permenter, and Dione Murray hauled her out of the water.”

The following are segments of stories taken from the front pages of the Whidbey Island Record 50, 25 and 15 years ago on Thursday, July 15, 1965, Tuesday, July 17, 1990, and Saturday, June 24, 2000.

The Greenbank Farm community is still reeling from the 2-1 vote by the Port of Coupeville last week to terminate negotiations with the Greenbank Farm Management Group.

“Last week’s action from the port came as a shock,” said Judy Feldman, executive director for the management group.

“Tenants were just as blindsided.”

The management group’s next move is contingent on how the port decides to move forward, Feldman said.

Meanwhile, the man-agement group is holding a public meeting 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 15, at the farm.

“Primarily, we just want to give people basic informa-tion,” Feldman said. “When there’s heightened fear, things tend to get blown out

of proportion.”“We want to provide the

community with a platform to ask questions. People left (last week) with a lot of con-cerns and a lot of questions.”

Feldman said the reasons cited by port commissioners at the meeting are not based on information the manage-ment group sees.

“Those things just aren’t consistent with what we’re understanding,” Feldman said. “Our understanding is not going to save money.”

David Day, executive direc-tor for the Port of Coupeville, said Monday the motion was a bold move by Carr. Since the meeting, said Day, most of the response the port received is positive toward the decision.

And while there is no plan, or even framework in place, Day said he is look-ing into ideas on how to pro-ceed and will hopefully have something to present at next month’s meeting.

“The port has a duty to look at as many opportunities and options it can to move forward,” Day said.

“There’s a lot of stuff left up in the air.”

“We have some time and there is some money to work with,” he added.

The port and management group will honor its current contract through the end of the year. On Jan. 1, 2016 the port will assume all manage-ment control.

This comes after months of negotiations between both

parties. A draft contract was being reviewed by lawyers and was expected to be ready in August.

things up,” he doesn’t light them off and he gets com-plaints from constituents who don’t like the effect they have on farm animals and pets.

“There’s an aging popu-lation that doesn’t like the noise, the trash and the clean up afterward,” he said.

Hannold’s view on the mat-ter seemed to come as a sur-prise to Price Johnson, who said she would also support a complete ban on the personal use of fireworks.

“I would support that,” she said. “I didn’t think I’d get support for that.”

State law allows local city and county governments to completely ban fireworks within their jurisdictions or add a clause allowing an emergency ban, but only with

a one-year advance notice. That notice is a nod to com-

munity service groups that sell fireworks, said county prosecutor Greg Banks. They have to order them well in advance and don’t want to get caught with thou-sands of dol-lars of inven-tory they can’t sell.

“Therein lies the problem — the people who sell them,” Hannold said. “These people already have inventory so they are selling. Once they are sold, people are going to use them.”

He suggested community service groups find other

ways to raise money, such as bake sales and car washes.

Any county ban would not affect public displays and

would only encompass unincorpo-rated areas. Cities have their own rules. In L a n g l e y a n d Coupeville, the dis-charge of fireworks is limited to the Fourth

of July while those in Oak Harbor can deto-nate legal fireworks for about a week around Independence Day.

Oak Harbor Mayor Scott Dudley said he doesn’t expect a change like the one suggest-ed by Hannold. Fireworks are

part of the cultural fabric of Oak Harbor and an important fundraiser for local commu-nity service groups such as Rotary.

If the ban passes, he invited people living in unincorporat-ed areas to visit the City of Oak Harbor to light off a few.

“We have a long history of celebrating the Fourth the way it should be celebrated,” Dudley said. “We are not concerned with overzealous or exaggerated concerns of those on the South End of Whidbey Island.”

Island County Commissioner Jill Johnson, whose area of representa-tion includes Oak Harbor, said she supports giving the Island County fire marshal the ability to ban fireworks on an emergency basis only. Johnson said she does not support a complete ban on fireworks. She also doesn’t

want to see them limited to a single day.

“I don’t believe this is a safety issue,” she said. “I believe it’s an inconvenient noise issue.”

She is sympathetic to the concerns of pet owners, but she also said sometimes it seems lawmakers can be too sensitive to what amounts to a few days of disruption. Those who are upset tend to call and complain while those who enjoy fireworks have no reason to speak up, she said.

“What ends up happening is you make decisions based on what I believe is a small section of our county,” she said.

The public would have a chance to review and com-ment on a draft ordinance before it’s passed. The date for public hearing hasn’t been

set yet.Island County Sheriff Mark

Brown, who serves as fire marshal, said it was unusual to issue a burn ban before the Fourth of July. Typically, that doesn’t happen until mid-July.

This isn’t the driest June on record but it’s drier than nor-mal. Total rainfall measured in June at Washington State University’s AgWeather sta-tion on South Whidbey was .55 inches, and just .38 inches at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station. The South End sta-tion is less than one-year old so past data is unavailable. The lowest amount of rainfall on record at the base, how-ever, was .1 inches. The base couldn’t provide the year that occurred.

Normal precipitation dur-ing the month of June at the base is .81 inches.

Glendale beach project progresses

The last bit of funding needed for the Glendale Beach preservation proj-ect is complete and the area may be open for public use as soon as November.

The Whidbey Camano Land Trust recently announced the state Legislature had approved two grant requests which will officially wrap up funding used for the property purchase. It also fast tracks the organiza-tion’s final efforts to ready the beach for community use.

The property purchase consisted of three water-front parcels: one that houses the old Glendale Hotel and pier, an adja-cent parcel with a house and boat launch, and a third undeveloped prop-erty just south of that.

The total project cost was about $1.5 million. About $900,000 was bor-rowed, which can now be paid back with two state grants through the Washington Recreation and Conservation Office. The remaining $600,000 came from land trust cof-fers and nearly 200 com-munity donors (a full list of which can be seen at www.wclt.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/06/WCLT-Donor-List-6-15-High_FINAL.pdf) who pitched in

about $186,000.The state grants do

come with a price, how-ever; they prohibit motor-ized use. That means the boat launch must be removed. The pier will also be demolished for environmental reasons, largely due to its old creo-sote pilings.

According to the land trust’s website, the hotel, pier and a broken wooden bulkhead will be removed soon. They will be replaced by a gravel parking lot, informational signs and landscaping.

Dozens of shops publish open hours

Shopping in Langley may be a bit easier this year following a collab-orative effort by city and business leaders.

The “Here for You” program, a joint effort by the city, Chamber of Commerce and Langley Main Street Association, is a communications proj-ect designed to better connect consumers with city merchants through the publication of useful information.

“Many people see Langley as a charm-ing tourist destination, which it is,” said Mayor Fred McCarthy, in a news release. “But, it is also a thriving business com-munity with a broad spec-trum of interesting and

unusual retail stores and places to eat and drink.”

The chamber designed a brochure that lists the summer days and hours that Langley businesses are open. It’s available to download on all three of the organization’s web-sites and at many over-night accommodations in the area.

Participating businesses are also putting “Here for You” signs in their win-dows above the store’s regular summer business hours.

Lorinda Kay, program manager for Langley Main Street, said it is a simple program that lets tourists and visitors alike know their business is both wanted and appreciated.

For more informa-tion about “Here for You,” email Program Coordinator Carolyn Tamler at [email protected].

Several awards issued by mayor

Langley Mayor Fred McCarthy recently hand-ed out a few appreciative awards.

The mayor recognized the service and work of an outgoing library board member, a woodworker and the chief of police at the city council’s regular meeting July 6.

Nadine Zachrisson received a certificate from Langley Mayor Fred McCarthy in recognition of her service to the city’s

library board. Her appointment was

scheduled to expire in February 2017, but she resigned early. She was also given a bouquet of flowers from fellow library board member Joann Hamick-Quintana.

Kim Hoelting was recognized for making special live-edge tables for the council and staff. They replaced the previ-ous folding tables, and McCarthy said they were sold to the city for about half their retail value.

“Kim, your gift of time and talent … will be something that for years to come people will enjoy,” the mayor said.

Hoelting said the wood for the tabletops came from a red cedar that was

taken down from a prop-erty on Fourth Street.

“It felt kind of good to take a piece of wood that grew in this town,” Hoelting said.

Police Chief Dave Marks was recognized for ensur-ing that the city’s four-man police force received appropriate training.

“We don’t get a safe community without good, community policing,” McCarthy said.

Laptops bought for every student

The South Whidbey School District Board of Directors approved an initiative this month to supply Chromebooks for every occupied classroom for the 2015-16 school year.

To ensure equity of access to technology, to promote personalized learning, and to pre-pare for online testing for Common Core State Standards (CCSS), the dis-trict moved forward with providing Chromebooks based on a ratio of 30 units per classroom.

The school district ordered 900 units of the 11-inch standard format Chromebooks.

The district had already purchased 400 Chromebooks prior to the initiative’s approval, which were used by stu-dents and staff in order to

receive feedback on the longevity and usefulness of the product.

Costing $250 per unit — half of what an iPad costs, which is what much of the district was using — the Chromebooks will offer far more fea-tures and flexibility in their usage, according to school officials.

Each classroom will have a mobile cart that contains 30 Chromebooks.

“It puts the power of the computer into the students’ hands and the teachers’ hands,” said Tom Atkins, South Whidbey School District Technology Operations director.

The idea behind the initiative was a collab-orative effort between Atkins, Superintendent Jo Moccia, and Director of South Whidbey Academy David Pfeiffer.

“As we reviewed the costs of total ownership for the iPads, we came to the realization that we had a gap in our curricu-lum in our typing skills and that the costs wasn’t sustainable over time,” Atkins said. “If we wanted to develop a 1:1 ratio, we couldn’t afford it.”

“The biggest benefit is collaboration. The teacher can collaborate with the student whether they’re in their classroom or not,” he added. “They can col-laborate via the Google Apps we’ve deployed or operation tools.”

Other than one Record reporter, a few passing cars and people walking by, Thomas Gill was all alone at his first meet-the-candidate stint Monday night.

Gill, who was elected to the city council in an unopposed race in 2013, spent nearly two hours chatting about the city from a table with three empty chairs in the Second Street plaza. He is running for mayor against two other candidates, Tim Callison and Sharon Emerson, who have both held public meet-and-greets.

Gill said the lack of atten-dance might have been due to the event being held on a Monday night. Also, he didn’t do much to publicize the meet-and-greet other than send a notice to the paper late last week; it was published in the Saturday Record but the time of the event was accidentally omit-ted. The online story had all the details.

So, with his only audience a Record reporter, Gill high-lighted some of the success-es of the city and discussed some of the challenges it has faced and continues to confront. People come to Langley, so he feels it would be important as mayor to continue to see the city’s tourism draw grow. But Gill said there were other issues the mayor should tackle, such as the perception that the city is unfriendly to new businesses.

“I see a lot more people out and about,” he said.

If elected, he would want

to continue that legacy of making Langley inviting for visitors and residents by pushing for improved infra-structure. One idea is to add a plaza feature to First Street and Anthes Avenue, similar to the one installed on Second Street in 2014. It would help connect the look of the city, he said, and improve pedestrian access, “to make it feel like a place we want to hang out and be.”

“The mayor needs to be an advocate of the city to the people who live here and also

out to others to bring them here,” Gill said.

Diversifying the city’s businesses is also important, he said. Back in 2008 when the economy was in the doldrums, tourism spend-

ing dropped significantly, which drastically impacted Langley’s commerce and city hall’s revenue.

“There’s going to be a point, we saw it in 2008, when disposable income may dry up,” he said.

That led him to consid-er an idea previously tout-ed by other city leaders, most recently Mayor Fred McCarthy to see a light industrial or small manufac-turing zone established in city limits.

McCarthy is not running for re-election.

To help combat the per-ception that Langley is unre-ceptive or has too many reg-ulations for businesses, Gill said he’d create a form that explains why the steps are necessary and try to elimi-nate others. Tidying up the standards for certain design elements to help some indus-

tries breeze through the Design Review Board pro-cess, he said, may make it easier for a new company to open up in Langley. Clearly explaining the necessity of certain steps would help improve relations, too.

Gill said the city’s back-and-forth with the owners of the Dog House Tavern served as a good learning lesson in the power of mis-communication. The city could have done a better job explaining its position to the property’s owners and to

residents, rather than being slapped with a stigma that City Hall was dragging its heels just to be difficult.

“I’m glad to see progress is being made, but it should have been done a lot sooner,” he said.

Given the lack of partici-pants in his first meet and greet, Gill said he planned to be back out in the Second Street plaza from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 16.

Gill goes it alone at first meet-the-candidate

Ben Watanabe / The Record

Langley mayoral candidate Thomas Gill sits alone at a table on the Second Street plaza Monday night. He had planned a meet-and-greet, to no avail.

ResponseFolks, winter is coming at Greenbank FarmEditor,

Wednesday’s proceedings at the Greenbank Farm are yet another example of corporate interests (such as those of Monsanto) hammering away at the individual. Think not? Google “Monsanto Company History.” Still dis-agree? Okay, yummy, yummy. Keep eat-ing those big fat ears of North American Independence Day corn until you finish your research. But the next time you pig out on those incredibly plump kernels, remember to ask yourself what moral code was followed by the Coupeville port commissioners in their handling of the Greenbank conflict.

After all, when it comes to deliver-ing bad news, delay is the deadliest form of denial. The manner in which the Port of Coupeville’s representatives demonstrated their disregard for the desires and values expressed by the

overwhelming majority of those citi-zens in attendance proved it. To bluntly dismiss the values of hard-working, self-motivated neighbors is to dump toxicity, not only on the land, but to pump systemic doubt into the lives of the young and healthy souls who will inherit whatever we leave behind. The good news is that Commissioner Mike Diamanti wasted no time in voicing his response. Even better news is that commissioners John Carr and Marshall Bronson are saying goodbye.

But wait, these “deals” are never really done. Or are they? Winter is com-ing. Watch your rugs, folks.

RICHARD EVANSClinton

Gill is the right candidate for Langley mayorEditor,

Langley will soon select the next mayor. Three people, each with passion to serve, offer experience and interest to serve. The voters soon decide.

I know one of the three candidates, Thomas Gill. I am currently the Langley Library Board chairperson. In that ser-vice, I’ve observed Thomas Gill. He serves as liaison between the library board and Langley council. Thomas consistently listens well, comes pre-pared to provide relevant information to our council, and offers guidance to our library board (an appointed advisory group to the mayor and council regard-ing library facilities).

Thomas may be the youngest candi-date among the three, but I believe he is well-grounded in Langley business. He told me he would take leave from his current job to serve as mayor. His steady nature, his seeming focus on what is prudent for the Langley commu-nity, his experience with city fiscal mat-ters and council duties, and his relative calm nature could serve Langley well.

I can’t vote in this election as I don’t live within the city limits. But I can advo-cate. Thomas is ready to serve.

Dungeness crab, real manhood here I come

Editor’s column

I’ve done some pretty cool stuff in my life, things many people will probably never do. For example, I know what it feels like to be at sea on a sailboat and look in any direc-tion and not see land. I’ve jumped out of an airplane 169 times and lived the life of a parachute packer. I’ve worked at national parks, been a captain on a shark-tour boat and walked the ancient streets of Istanbul. I even got married and became a father.

Despite all of that, it’s only this week that I will truly become a man and pass a Whidbey rite of passage. Tonight, I drop my first crab pot.

Don’t get me wrong, I’ve hauled more than my fair share of cold and slimy pot line. I spent a few weeks nearly every summer as a kid on Useless Bay crabbing with my grandfa-ther. And anyone who knew Norm Smith knows this counts for something, for this was a man who was serious about his Dungeness crab.

Over decades of experience, he’d learned the best places to drop his pots and they went down exactly where he want-ed them to. This was all before GPS and waypoints of course, and accomplished with visual line-ups — the tried-and-true practice of using two fixed points on land, one behind another, to determine a position. Use two or three different line-ups and, well, X marks the spot. The only electronics he had aboard was an old flasher-type depth finder. Kinda like a radial telephone, a light would spin around a circular path and flash at the right depth.

As for bait, I don’t have enough space in this column to adequately cover the depth of the guy’s knowledge, but summed up his philosophy was to stay natural. Clam shells from the previous night’s dinner, salmon fish heads, sole bones, etc.; he swore this was the only way to go. His only break from this practice was canned cat food. I don’t remem-ber the brand, but it seemed to work for rarely was the man skunked.

In later years, I did a bit of crabbing with my father as well. His methods leave a bit more to chance, perhaps, but he seems to get results all the same. His secret weapon, if you could call it a secret at all, is a turkey leg. Works every time.

So, while I’ve had a lots of experience hauling pots, chang-ing bait and eating lots and lots, and lots and lots and lots of crab, it’s always been as a second, a deckhand, i.e. the guy not in charge. But tonight that will all change. I’ve got the pot, I’ve got the license (or will within a few hours) the leaky boat, a lifejacket, tons of cat food and even a helper of my own — my 14-year-old son, Kyle.

Manhood, here I come.

Two book signings planned for Langley

Mark Tucker of Clinton has his story laid bare in his first published book, “Drive or Die: A True Story of Addiction, Murder and Hope.”

The 41-year-old South Whidbey native tells the story of his heroin addiction and the depths to which it plunged

him. Perhaps one of the worst experiences was being held at gunpoint by James Moran, at one time America’s eighth-most-wanted person — he later committed a double mur-der and suicide.

Tucker was convicted of rendering criminal assistance and sentenced to five years in prison and still owes money on a $130,000 fine, according to a recent news release.

Clean since December 2012, Tucker visits people struggling with addiction as a public speaker and works as a person-al trainer and owns Whidbey South Woodworks, a construc-tion company.

“With this book I’m trying to reach addicts as well as families damaged by addiction,” Tucker said, in the release. “I want to create awareness in parents and hope in addicts, and to

give some tools that addicts can use to find recovery and parents can use to help under-stand addiction better.”

Tucker will discuss the book and sign copies at 6:30 p.m. Friday, July 17 at South Whidbey Commons, 124 Second St., Langley; and at 10 a.m. Sept. 12 at the Langley Library, 104 Second St.

South Whidbey Record

The sixth inning hasn’t been a problem for South Whidbey’s 11/12 Little League All-Stars.

It’s the other five that have given them trouble.

Luckily for South Whidbey, it’s only cost them one loss in the District 11 All-Stars tourna-ment.

South Whidbey’s latest victory — a 9-7 decision over Central Whidbey on Monday night — puts them at two wins and one loss in the tournament. The team still needs two more wins to reach the championship game.

South Whidbey was scheduled to face North Whidbey after The Record Tuesday evening.

South Whidbey’s struggles in all but the final inning started against Sedro-Woolley.

That was until Brent Batchelor — a 6-foot-tall 12-year-old — blasted an opposite-field home run to left field to tie the game at 2 in the top of the sixth.

“I was pretty hyped up after that,” Batchelor said. “We were down and I just had to do what was neces-sary. I tried to get a little under on that inside pitch and just pulled it.”

The glory, however, was short-lived. Sedro’s Boomer Poutry launched a walk-off home run to center field in the bottom of the sixth, giving Sedro a 3-2 victory.

“I think they did well,” said head coach James Petty. “It was just the first half of that first inning that

got us.”Despite the sting of an

opening round loss, South

Whidbey could still relish in the fact that they had a star amidst their presence during the game.

Retired professional catcher Bengie Molina, a two-time Golden Glove winner whose wife went to South Whidbey High School, threw out the first pitch to commence the game. He also promoted his best-selling book, “Molina: The Story of the Father Who Raised an Unlikely Baseball Dynasty.”

Molina, wearing a blue, South Whidbey baseball cap and a blue South Whidbey All-Stars shirt, stood on the mound and

shared with the players a small message on the importance of focusing on success rather than luck to lead you in life.

“It is human nature to believe in something that’s not there,” Molina said. “In my opinion, luck is just a word. If you work hard, if you do all these things that you’re supposed to do…it’s not luck. It’s success.”

Molina signed auto-graphs and spoke about his playing days and current endeavors with spectators and parents. On Friday, Molina visited South Whidbey’s All-Stars during their practice. Batchelor

took away a specific mes-sage.

“Mostly what teamwork actually means and that to win you need to be a full team,” Batchelor said. “I think that’s what we did (Saturday), we just needed to get a little bit more on the bats.”

On Sunday, South Whidbey faced Anacortes next to avoid elimination.

And again, not much happened on South Whidbey’s end until the sixth.

Trailing 1-0 with two on base, Batchelor took the plate.

Batchelor didn’t hit a homer, but he did launch the ball beyond the reach of Anacortes’ outfielders for a two-run double, push-ing South Whidbey ahead, 2-1.

Drew Fry followed with a double to score Batchelor, extending South Whidbey’s lead to 3-1.

Anacortes closed the gap to 3-2 when Hadyn Weaver drove in a RBI single, but it was South Whidbey’s Aidan Donnelly who sealed the game when he chased Gavin More’s fly ball to right field.

Against Central Whidbey, Batchelor hit another home run in the top of the first. Catcher Nick Black hit his first-ever home run, a three-run shot to center field, in the top of the fifth. Central Whidbey closed the gap with a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth, but South Whidbey’s Luke Rookstool shut his opponents down from the mound.

local-led bluegrass group was fronted by husband and wife Tanner and Amy McInerney.

“Tanner learned guitar on his father’s knee,” said his mother, Karen McInerney, referring to retired teacher Michael McInerney.

The stage was relocated this year. It didn’t move far, however, and was built just up the block from its pre-vious Hladky Park location at the intersection of Anthes Avenue and First Street, to the US Banking parking lot at Second Street and Anthes. One of the festival’s organiz-

ers said the reason for the change was because they needed a larger stage, which would not fit at the park because of the old tree.

“It’s not a Second Street conspiracy,” Gwen Jones said through laughter.

In place of the stage, First and Anthes became the Kid’s Zone, featuring a chalk art area adorned with messages and sketches. A prominent, red “I (heart) Cher” was scrawled in the middle of the square.

Fewer arts vendors filled the street space than in previ-ous years, allowing the orga-nizers to consolidate action west of Boy and Dog Park on First Street.

One regular Choochokam

vendor came up from University Place to show his wood wares. Barry Crust, the artist-owner of Beyond the Beach, burned patterns and designs into driftwood and downed trees around Hood Canal.

“I was a school teacher in my real life,” he said, deli-cately etching a line into the grain of a wood walking stick. “Then I retired and found a hobby.”

Early in the festival, peo-ple popped into his tent to browse his works and wares. Sales weren’t eye-popping, but it was early, he said. Regardless, he was enjoying another visit to Choochokam.

“It’s a good setting,” Crust said.

Brick-and-mortar business-es in town benefited as well. Michaleen McGarry, execu-tive director of the Langley Chamber of Commerce, said she heard from several busi-nesses that reported strong sales numbers.

“There weren’t as many vendors, but that seemed to

be a benefit,” McGarry said in a phone interview Monday afternoon.

“It didn’t seem packed, it felt comfortable,” she added.

ADOPT!! DON’T SHOP!!!

Hi! My name is Minnie and I came from the very high kill shelter in Dow- ney, CA. I am a very gentle soul, sweet and calm. I’m some sort of terrier mix, maybe some spaniel mix. Whatever I am, I’m extremely cute! I ’m app rox ima te l y 1 years old, spayed, my weight is about 12 lbs., up to date on all vac- cines, heart worm nega- t ive and have had my health certificates done. I get along great with other dogs and I would like a calm household, maybe a stay at home parent that can love me al l day long! I would also like a fenced yard so I can play in and be safe. I LOVE to play and want someone to play with! If you would like an application for me, please call
