ANNUAL SCARECROW TRAIL WEEKENDThorngumbald, Camerton & Ryehill

ITS going to be a No Crow Zone in Thorngumbald parish once again this year with the staging of the 4th Annual Scarecrow Trail on Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th July.

Scarecrows will be out from 10am on the Saturday until 4pm on the Sunday. Visitors can once again expect to be amazed by the sheer imagination and creativity of residents who enter the competition and construct such brilliant scarecrows.

Scarecrow Maps showing the location of each will be available to buy for 1 on the Saturday and Sunday from the Royal Mail and Crooked Billet pubs and Bridgeman News during opening hours. The Community Institute will be selling maps from 12 noon - 4pm on Saturday and 11am - 3pm on the Sunday, and the Village Hall from 9am - 4pm on the Saturday only.

The best scarecrow will be chosen by public vote by completing the form on your map and posting in one of the voting boxes at venues across Thorngumbald.

A Village Show will take place at the Village Hall with exhibits on public display from 1pm - 4pm and expect a variety of sidestalls too. Look out for a Steam Engine on display in the grounds of the Village Hall.

The weekend will be marked by the crowning of its own Royal King and Queen in the Village Hall at 12.30pm. The Royals chosen from amongst Primary School children,

will later take to their thrones at 5pm in the car park at the Royal Mail to be entertained by majorettes and later by a Magic Show.

This will be followed by the presentation of trophies for winners of the Village Show (and other awards) at 6:30pm in the car park.

On the Sunday, St Marys Church which is always lovingly decorated with its own scarecrows, will be holding a special Family Scarecrow Service at 10am which has now become a traditional part of the weekend trail festivities.

In each of the last three years the Scarecrow Trail has been accompanied by brilliant, hot and sunny weather. It is hoped that this tradition continues this year as well!

ISSUE 3: Alas, a 12-pager again! We do intend to be a 16-page paper! But even 4 pages short, the Herald does seem to be getting a good response. We get a few complaints of non-delivery from parts of the patch, but working with Browns Leaflet Distribution we hope to be able to sort these out. We produce an online version of each issue and will arrange for the village halls to receive copies so there should always be a way that you can get hold of a copy.

Were pleased to bring you news of three traditional annual events in this issue. Notably, the Thorngumbald, Camerton and Ryehill 4th Annual Scarecrow Trail weekend on the 4th and 5th July, theres the slimmed-down version of the Preston Village Show on the 11th July and also the Eastside Gala on Saturday 18th July.

We had hoped to be able to bring you the news of the line-up for the new HedFest in this issue, but at the time of writing that information on the Hedon Festival hadnt been released. But keep an eye on the Hedon Blog!

Thanks to those that have advertised in the Herald. We dont intend to be an Ad Mag because the Holderness Heartbeat already does that admirably, but we do have some limited advertising space and rely on that to keep the newspaper running - advertising below. And please do mention the Herald to those that might want an Ad.

Finally, thank you to those that have sent in information for inclusion in the Herald and our Whats On? page on HU12 Online. The South West Holderness area has a vibrant community life with a whole host of activities, events and entertainment organised for its residents; if we can reflect just a little bit of that in the Herald, we are doing well!

Quiz NightPreston Community Hall, Friday 3rd July, 7:30pm

Teams of four - 2.50 each personPrizes for the Winners - and a booby prize! In aid of the Preston Chapel Survival Fund

Whilst the Quiz Night is in the Community Hall on Main Street, the Chapel is located at the busy crossroads in Preston village. Despite being at the crossroads, it is only really accessible from one pavement to the west of the church. To cross to that pavement from other directions is quite an

ordeal for most people, but is particularly so for some elderly members of the congregation.

A local church supporter said One lady, over the age of 90 and previously a lifelong attendee at church services, has recently given up attending because of the difficulties in crossing the road in her wheelchair. As the congregation gets older, the inaccessibility of the chapel is becoming more of an

issue! The aim is to use the funds raised from the Quiz Night and other fundraising activities to help tackle the problem.

PROSTATE Cancer UK received a cheque of 2,000 from Councillor John Dennis in his last public role as the 668th Mayor of Hedon at the end of May.

The charity was Councillor Dennis main good cause supported during his year in office. He picked Prostate Cancer UK as recipient of his charity fundraising efforts because of what he termed his own brush with the condition a few short years ago. He had gone to see his doctor for a health check with the aim of measuring his cholesterol the results of his test diagnosed early stage prostate cancer which completely shocked him, but the diagnosis had come early enough to allow treatment to be effective.

See page 7 for news about the new 669th Mayor of Hedons chosen charity for his civic year.

    Heads up Knitters!

Theres a plan to Yarn Bomb HedFest with knitted bunting! Trees and bollards watch out - these knitters want to dress you up!

The Hedon Festival will bring lots of art forms to the town in August. Knitting is perhaps one of those that could be overlooked; but not so, at HedFest!

If knitters respond to the organisers appeal, then Hedon could be festooned with knitted bunting by the start of the Festival. And everyone who knits for pleasure can get involved! You dont have to be an expert.

Yarn Bombing is a US invented phenomenon that has spread around the world. It allows for a creative use of left-over wool and yarn but also adds a bit of colour and excitement to places.

Wanted: Knitted/crocheted/sewn/ squares, triangles, scarves or pom poms. They can be of any size and colour, plain or patterned. The pieces of work can be dropped off at the Yorkshire Mobility Shop at 22 New Road, Hedon when the shop is open. The individual pieces of work will be combined to make the HedFest bunting.

If you want further information about what to knit then contact Anita on 07936 281585.

    Small Business Support for HedFest

The East Riding of Yorkshire Branch of the FSB (Federation of Small Businesses) has pledged its support to HedFest. Mike Bisby the Chairman of the Branch attended the HedFest organising committee last month and said: The FSB committee are 100% behind this event. Keeping Trade Local is at the Heart of our desire to support Small and Medium Business in Hull and the East Riding.

The FSB which has several member businesses in the town will be actively involved with the festival organisation as a partner and will contribute 3,000 towards the costs of staging the event.

One of the key outcomes of HedFest is to support and strengthen economic activity in the town.

HedFest is still seeking support and sponsorship for the festival if your business or organisation can help contact Hedon Town Council in the first instance at e.mail: [email protected]. Supporting businesses and organisations will get a mention in the HedFest programme, brochures and publicity plus there may be other rewards and free tickets!

Tickets are 5 each, including refreshments. Free entry for Children under 16.

FOURTEEN year old Harry Robinson from Leaf Sail Farm in Hedon has won his first round of the season of the amateur AquaX jetski national championships.

Harry is the youngest racer in the rookie class of the competition and raced in Scarborough on the last weekend in May. In the final of three races, competing against over 20 other riders, he claimed the top spot after what commentators said was a thrilling ride.

Dad, Steve Robinson, is already a top class AquaX rider coming third in last years national championships and is ranked the seventh best rider in the world, but this year due to a broken foot he is unable to compete so is spending his time coaching and supporting Harry.

Steve said: Harry is doing fantastic first round and he won! Last season Harry finished overall 5th and would have done much better, but he missed one round because of his age, he was too young to compete.

There are another four races in the championship which includes the Hull leg in August. The powerboat and jet ski races on the River Humber over the weekend of Saturday 8th August and Sunday 9th August 2015, also coincides with Hulls Grand Prix of the Sea. Hull Marina and viewing points along the Humber are usually packed out for this weekend with people wanting to catch the best views of the excitement.

We are sure that people in Hedon and the rest of Holderness will want to follow Harrys progress during the competition. And we also wish Steve Robinson all the best on his road to recovery and return to competition next year.

Visit beautiful Paull Church (St Andrew), Thorngumbald Road at the weekend with its coffee shop waiting to serve you tasty cakes and refreshments from 2pm 4pm EVERY Saturday and Sunday during the summer.

Harlands of Hedon are exhibiting at Hedon Museum as Katy Miller explains:

Dont miss your opportunity to see the delightful little clay and wooden models made by Lesley and Richard Harland. Their small creations have had a big impact. The miniatures made by Harlands of Hedon sit in dolls houses across the world.

The hobby became a business 17 years ago but began completely out of the blue when Lesley recalled a childhood memory. Shed always wanted a dolls house when she was little, but as they were very expensive shed never asked for one. Years later she suddenly said to her husband do you want to have a go at making me a dolls house? He gave it a try and discovered a hidden talent. Lesley began experimenting with polymer clay and made the decorations for the inside of the house, and the joint hobby was born. They kept making things together until they had nowhere

to put everything, at which point they realised they had something they could sell.

Harlands of Hedon has been a runaway success. Lesley and Richard have perfected their techniques. A favourite of Richards creations is the work bench. With spanners, hammers, old tins and the wood splattered with paint, it looked genuinely like the real thing. Lesley has become very talented with polymer clay,

mixing ground rice with the clay to make things like bread and cheese look truly edible. The most beautiful of her clay models though, was the salmon; perfect in colour, texture and detail.

This is a must see exhibition, so make sure to visit us at Hedon Museum, located behind the town hall. Just follow the signs in Hedon town centre.

HEDON is home to what is considered to be the oldest civic mace in the country. This is not the one carried in public events by Hedons Mace bearer on ceremonial occasions, but a much older one rarely seen in public. The ancient Mace dates back to the 15th century during the reign of King Henry V who granted Hedon a charter conferring certain privileges upon the place including powers of self-government. This charter of 1415 is linked to the acquisition of the

Mace but there is no evidence that Henry V actually visited Hedon. However, new research suggests that Henry V may have presented the Mace to the Hedon Mayor in person. In March, Hedon hosted a visit from Dr Michael Hall the Curator of the Rothschild Collection. Dr Hall was researching an article for a magazine about Londons Crystal Sceptre, one of the maces at the Mansion House, the home of the Lord Mayor of London. Dr Hall inspected the Hedon Mace. His research, according to town councillor John Dennis, suggests that Henry V almost certainly crossed the Humber from Hedon on or about 12th April 1421, when he would have been able to present the Mace to Hedons Mayor in person a Mace, who knows, made from a weapon used at Agincourt.

Rare Mace may have been presented to Hedon personally

    by King Henry V

Hedon Mayors charity CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young)

THE new 669th Mayor of Hedon Councillor Neil Black and Mayoress Mrs Linda Black will formally announce at the Hedon Mayormaking celebration dinner on Thursday 2nd July, that they have chosen to support CRY (Cardiac

Risk in the Young) as their main charity beneficiary during the new civic year.

Funds raised during 2015-16 will benefit other local good causes too, but CRY will be the main recipient

of the Mayors Charity fundraising. Those fundraising efforts are likely to include several events comprising arts, crafts, food, and one that may quite literally put a swing in your step but more about these in the coming weeks and months.

The charity is close to the hearts of the Mayor and Mayoress whose daughter Amy Black, Hedons own and internationally acclaimed mezzo-soprano opera singer, was tragically lost to a fatal cardiac arrhythmia at the age of 36.

What is CRY? Every week in the UK at least 12 apparently fit and healthy young people die of undiagnosed cardiac conditions.

Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) aims to reduce the frequency of young sudden cardiac death by working with cardiologists and family doctors to establish good practice and appropriate screening facilities to promote and protect the cardiac health of our young. CRY is helping save young lives from these potentially fatal cardiac conditions.

CRY has many ambitious projects to enable it to provide the support and research to help save young lives. Its programme of activities strives to prevent these tragedies through: A National Screening Programme Funding medical research into young sudden cardiac death Developing the CRY Centre for Inherited Cardiovascular Conditions and Sports Cardiology Raising awareness of the risk of undetected cardiac conditions in young people

CRY also supports young people diagnosed with life-threatening cardiac conditions through: the myheart Networkand those affected by young sudden cardiac death by: Offering a fast-track expert cardiac pathology service through the CRY Centre for Cardiac Pathology Providing a Bereavement Support Service to help those who have suffered a loss Providing information and literature free of chargeMore about CRY at the website:

HELPING HEDON BECOME DEMENTIA FRIENDLIERThe Hedon Blog has declared itself to be a Dementia Friend. We hope that through the blog in a series of articles we can help raise awareness of the condition, encourage more people to become Dementia Friends and encourage local action so that Hedon can justifiably call itself a dementia friendly place that aims to include people with dementia and contribute towards their quality of life. Another aim is to encourage people to seek early diagnosis of dementia.

Around 850,000 people in the UK have diagnosed dementia and perhaps 5,000 of those live in the East Riding and there may be many more living with symptoms but are yet undiagnosed. It is likely that most people reading this will know of someone with dementia.

There are five things that people should know about dementia:

    1. Its not a natural part of ageing2. Its caused by diseases of the brain. The most common of these is Alzheimers3. Its not just about losing your memory it can affect thinking, communicating and doing everyday tasks4. It is possible to live well with dementia5. Theres more to a person than the dementia

There are some information resources available locally. Hedon Library boasts a collection of books on dementia. It also hosts a digital reminiscence therapy unit this state of the art technology lets people with dementia and their carers create a digital life story book which is a personal reminiscence tool that can include photos and music. Someone in the early stages of dementia can put together their life story into a digital book; the ability to revisit this later as the dementia progresses, can be a stimulating and satisfying experience.

Warren Branton has been using the digital reminiscence therapy unit at Hedon Library with his wife Irene who has dementia. He said: The digital memory book has been a real source of comfort for Irene, especially being able to add in familiar music which she loves. Its user friendly and has been an enjoyable experience for us both.

If your workplace or organisation deals with the public, then it might be beneficial to hold your own Dementia Information session for staff. Emma Williams from the Alzheimers Society may be able to help with this contact her on 01482 211255.

Lots of information available at the Dementia Friends Website, but in many ways being dementia friendly is just an extension of good neighbourliness. We encourage people in Hedon and the surrounding district to become Dementia Friends too! Help make the places you live and work dementia friendly!

A SMALLER version of the Preston Show is being staged in the village at the Nags Head public house on Sproatley Road. The Preston Family Charity Show Day will take place on Saturday 11th July at the Nags Head, to be opened at 1.30pm by a Secret Celebrity!Mick and Marian Rouse the licensees at the pub are past Presidents of the traditional Preston Show, and like many others in the village were disappointed with the announcement that a show was not taking place this year. But they are in a position to stage a mini-show in the pub utilising the venue and its large beer garden area.Mike Rouse, said: With great disappointment we learned that the Village Show was not going ahead this year. Its a shame to lose this community day. so we are putting together a smaller version.

A MINI PRESTON VILLAGE SHOW - Nags Head - Saturday 11th JulyOpened 1.30pm by a SECRET CELEBRITY

FUN for all the family at the SUMMER FETE being held at the RYEHILL VILLAGE HALL, Sunday 26th July 2015.

Bouncy castle, games (ball in the bucket, pin the flea on the rabbit, etc), Play Your Cards Right, craft stalls, refresh-

ments and delicious home-made cakes and quiches!

Time: 2pm 4pm. Free entry and car parking.

PLANS to renovate the Ryehill Village Hall on Marsh Lane, Ryehill, HU12 9NG were agreed in October 2012 and a committee formed to carry out the necessary fundraising to make the restoration happen. Since then the dedicated volunteers have managed to raise over 31,000.

The committee has organised bingo nights, garden parties, craft fairs and fun days as part of their fundraising activities. Last Christmas the hall hosted a marvellous theatre production. The Summer Fete, a fundraising cricket funday on 13th September, a Harvest Auction in October are some activities this year.

The project once completed will see new extensions and a new roof being built, and a new brick skin built around the entire building. This will improve the facilities available for the local community and preserve the life of the building itself. A new idea is to build an extension pod to the current building containing new facilities.

The committee is keen to recruit new volunteers to help with the fundraising drive. If you can offer support or have fundraising suggestions, contact Sylvia Dawson (left with granddaughter Lucy) on 01964 622859 or Sylvia Pizer (right) 01964 621868.

Parents have made their feelings know on HU12 Online about the classes and we are delighted to publish the highlights of those comments:

Claire S: My daughter started in the Little Warriors group ast year and has completed her 1st grading. She loves going to the class and asks am I at fight class tonight? There is such a brilliant atmosphere. The instructors are amazing with the children and my daughter really has a soft spot for them. I really cannot

praise Paddy, Pete, and Dave highly enough.

Lynsey: My 11 year old has been going since little warriors started and loves it. His confidence has come on leaps and bounds. He loves going, would be there all week if he could. The kids come in with a smile and walk

out smiling. The guys are fantastic with the kids, the time and effort they put in is amazing.

Victoria: My son started 5 weeks ago he was keen to go but very apprehensive too! He walked in to a fun warm and welcoming environment. He loves it and his confidence has really grown.

Claire C. Fab! The little warriors love it, mine especially. The whole team are brill, the kids love them.

Gemma: My 8 and 6 year old girls started last August, and they absolutely love it.

Kerry: RSP lead by example. And it shows in the respect they earn from the kids.

Matthew: My two started at the begining of the year and after just a couple of weeks my nephew wanted to go too because of how highly my kids spoke about it. Wednesdays cant come quick enough for them. They talk

about it all week an practice what theyve learnt almost every night.

Kayleigh: Made a massive difference to my boys, their confidence has grown so much in such a short space of time, Wednesdays are now there favourite day of the week.

Kelly: She gets so excited when Wednesday comes round and I was so proud when she got her red belt.

SOUTH HOLDERNESS CRICKET CLUB MATCH PREVIEW JULY.

The fixtures scheduled for this coming month will see yet another season past the half way mark in the York & District Senior League, with the Hedon based teams both having put up much improved performances generally in comparison to those a year ago, (writes Malc Ripley).

Of the nine matches featured below, the Club's first eleven's two home games against Hessle CC and versus Kirk Ella CC at Middle Lane, could give rise to a couple of the hardest fought encounters in the hosts promotion chase in division Four East, particularly looking at the challenges set by these two Clubs in the first half of the summer.

Earlier in the campaign, all rounder Lewis Duell cracked a superb 157 against Hornsea Town CC II, only to fall two runs shy of his Dad Steve's 159 made fifteen years ago, but the late Tony Wilcockson's record of an undrafted 160 way back in 1966, against Stamford Bridge CC in the defunct Cricket Pennant Alliance remains the Club record, even though Dave Gatti's fine effort of 155 also put the record in danger too.

The younger Duell has already passed the 400 run marker so far, whilst left handed skipper Rich Ingram is knocking on the door with 300 plus.

Another of the former Pennant Alliance teams in Brandesburton CC act as hosts to the senior squad at their Rial Recreation ground when it is anticipated that old rivalries will be renewed.

There is only a single 'local derby' in the coming month, when village side Patrington CC seconds make the trip to Hedon, but the latter have found life difficult in the higher division this summer, especially as they replaced their promoted first eleven, who went into division Two East where they joined neighbours Hornsea Town CC.

Equally, the An Xl are looking to be in the mix at the end of the summer as promotion candidates into the first division of the Eastern Conference, but they too face strong competition, this time from the likes of Pelican CC, former East Yorkshire Cup Competition side Old Hymerians CC and also from Foxtons CC.

Eyes will certainly be focused on the fixture against Foxtons, at Hedon, when the result of what is expected to be a battle royal, could play an all important role to determine one of the promotion places available.

The second string are without a fixture on 4th July, before they face what is always a difficult affair a week later, when they travel to tackle Skidby CC, who are always a handful to overcome particularly at home.

All rounder Carl Bevan is a player that the visitors will have to watch out for, despite an uncharacteristic lean spell with the bat recently. For Holderness, former Humbleton bowler Ian Harrison, who threw in his lot with his near neighbours three years ago, has 15 wickets to his credit to date.

South Holderness Cricket Club - Fixture (Matches start 1:30pm/2pm):Saturday 4th July 1st Xl v Hessle, at Home, at 1.30pm,

Saturday 11th July 1st Xl v Kirk Ella, at Home,An Xl v Skidby, Away, at 1.30pm
