Welcollle one and all to Monroe today for the Glanbia Senior Hurling Final between great ri vals Killcnaulc and Ballingarry. Today's encounter between these neighbouring sides promises all that is good inourNmional game and whatever the outcome the game of hurling is sure to be a winner today. K ilicllIlUlc aTC the reigning champions having secured victory in las\ year's final against taJay's opposition by Ihe very minimum after an exciting encounter. Ballingarry's last success was in 2001 and they have appeared in three final s since then without the reward ofsi lvcrwarc. Thc inccntive to win is grClLt then for these tlLlcnced hurlers with Killcnaule trying to retain thcir titlc and move on confidently to the Co championship and Ballingarry trying might and main to put the disappointmcnt ofreccnt finals behind them and carry horne the prize of the Com 6 Riain. The best orluck to all the players today.

The eunain-raiser for today's final is the Europlan sponsored Junior Hurling B clash between Cahirand Killenauleand this should get thednyofTto a good start.

I wish to thank our sponsors Glanbia for their continued support for our Senior Ilurling championship and ask our patrons 10 acknowledge that support In "very way possible.

Finally I wish the best orluck to the referee,> and officials for today's games. Willie Barrell who referees the Senior game marks a ll1ilc~tone in his career today as he referced the Senior linallwenty fivc years ago. Paddy Ivors who is in charge of the curtain-raiser is one ofthe busiest referees inlhe Division and his serv ice is much appreciated by Ihe Board.

The South Tipperary Senior Hurling Championship Trophy is the RYAN CUP

which commemorates the late Tommy Ryan Secretary of the Board from 1918 to

1930.

The dccision to honour thc fonner Secretary was taken at the Board's Annual

Convention of 1940. A native ofKilshane, Bansha, Tommy Ryan came to Clonmel in 1917 to a position as c lerk in the County Surveyor's office. His interest in all

things Gaelic at a time ofinereasingiy powerful national feeling naturally altmcted

him to the G.A.A. in the town which gave him an immediate public profile in Ihe

area. Ilis brother, Sean, who moved to Dublin where he practised as a solicitor,

shared his interests and from 1928 to \932 was President of the G.A.A. At the time

Tommy Ryan became Secretary in 1918, the South Board was still relatively in its

infancy, but during his stewardship the division established a secure identity. In his

daily work in what later became the County Council offices, he was ideally situated

to keep in touch with all the clubs and his daily communication with public figures

helped give the local G.A.A. a standing it never afterwards relinquished.

He was active in the Sinn Fein movement and was a member of the Third Tipperary

Brigade in the War of Independence. He took the republican side in the Civil War

and he spent a period in Limerick jai l where he found himself in the company of

many of the prominent figures of the ti me. It was to him that the I logan family of

Grangcmockler gave the jersey which Miek Hogan was wearing when he was shot

by Crown Forces in Croke Park on Bloody Sunday. The jersey was kept for many

years by the Ryan family and was laterdonatcd tothcCounty Museulll in Clonmel.

It was in Tommy Ryan's house in Anne SI. that the first mceting was held which led

to the purchase of the site which became Clonmei Sports field. By sad co incidence,

on the day of the offic ial opening of the field on I st June. 1930 his Funeral arrived in

Clonmel from the Dublin hospital where he had died after a short illness, st ill in his

early thirties. The occasion was made all the more poignant by the fact thai the

three bands which had played at the ceremonies in the Sportsficld in the afternoon

accompanied Ihecortegc 10 St. Marys Church in the evening.

Killenaule hope to make it 18

Killcnau lc are bidding for their 18th South Senior Hurling title today, the last one was won2007 in 2005 after a 14 year gap. Four oflhose titles were won in the 40's, three in the 50's. two in the 60's and the more recent ones were 1988, 89, and 91. The players involved in those years have all hung up theirbools aI his stage, but we have a new crop of young talent in the Club now. The current players have enjoyed many successes at Minor and U·21 level, and the one achievement that really siands out is the six South U-21A hurling lilies won from 2000 to 2005. In 2003 and 2004 Killcnaule wenl on to capture the County U-21 A hurling titles.

When you study the player profiles in the programme. you will sec just how many of loday's scnior playcrs have bcen part of the U-21 triumphs. No doubt those triumphs have given the players the taste OfSllCCCSS and the desire to keep playing and to taste that success at Senior level too. Jonathan Gleeson stands out as thconly playcr today to have been part ofal! six litles, while a good core of the team can cla im five, including Patrick Kerwick, Joe Ceaser, Gerry Kennedy. Tony Doyle. Mickey Farrell and Vinny I-Iannigan.

The South Senior title won in 2005 was the first sign of the promi$cofthose U-2l tcams coming Ihrough at Senior level. Interestingly, the 2005 Sen ior leam was captained by Tony Doy le, who also captained the U-2l team Ihat won the firsl County tille in 2003.

Killenaule have also had a number of football successes in recent years, capturing the County Intennediate football title in 2005 and the South Minor footballiitie in 2006. Most of the Senior hurlers play on Ihe Senior football team as well. Killenaule also take part in Junior Aand B hurling and Jun ior B foolbal l.

Many of our players have been selected to represent Tipperary in football and hurling, and Ihis also helps to raise the standard and morale in Ihe Club, We have players with All-Ireland minor hurli ng medals from 2006, inter-county minor, U-2 1, Junior and Senior football and intenllCdiate hurling expericncc. Thcre are also a number of Munster Minor and U-2 1 hurling medals in the Club, and of course Declan Fanningand Gerry Kennedy are current County Senior hurlers.

Killenaule Juvenile GAA Club contin ues to do great work with the young people of the parish, promoting and coach ing the games.

Killenaule GAA Club would like to thank all the supporters and volunteers and the Bit and Bridle for the ir sponsorship of the Sen ior team. We hope the team can bring back the Cup today fo r everyone La enjoy in our Parish and Club ..
