Critter of the month

Another month has passed. Historically, the months of April and September are laden with TMN Op-portunities. This year was no exception. Each weekend afforded opportunity for many volunteer hours. April has Big Bloom, Earth Day Bay Day and other events; September brings on Home and Garden Show, Hummer-fest, Celebration of Flight and others events. Since the last newsletter intern Chuck Blend had a very nice article in the Corpus Christi Caller Times. Interns had their first two training classes. Many chapter members were in-volved with Coastal Bend Children in Nature, the Oso Bay Wetlands morning walks, helping with training classes, volunteering at the Botanical Garden and Welder Wildlife Refuge, and various area parks and nature gar-dens received our services. These only name a few of the chapter activities. We will be looking for more help at Flour Bluff Intermediate with the Junior Master Naturalist program. At last word 75 fifth graders had applied to join. The election committee is continuing to seek members to serve during the up coming year. Their slate of candi-dates will be presented at the November meeting. All members have the responsibility to serve. These offices don’t require rocket science knowledge, but rather will-ingness to serve, do the best you can and help the chapter continue its forward momentum. Interns can serve as committee chairs or members as any member can. Two very important players that our chapter needs to begin collaboration are the Aransas National WR and Nueces County Coastal Parks System. We have worked with them in past projects. Laura Bonneau , Vis-itors Services Manager, has an upcoming event on Oct 15 in which our chapter should participate. However, we need some of you to take initiative and facilitate the needs at ANWR. On this day, Scott Cross, who I have know for several years, has done an outstanding job im-plementing habitat restoration among our coastal parks from Port A to the Packer Channel Nature Park. He needs help monitoring plants and monitoring Spring and Fall bird migration, adopting project sites, and monitor-ing Aplomado Falcon nesting boxes. Nueces County has just purchased 4000 acres of beach property in Kleberg county that will afford TMN endless opportunity for vol-unteer hours. Obviously, the details have yet to be worked out. It is, however, true to say that a much wider involvement of our membership will be necessary. Those of us who have been involved since we entered the TMN program have learned much, made good con-tacts with entities who have similar goals as Master Nat-uralist, but we will not be the ones carrying the ball on these new opportunities. We are at saturation. I see great opportunity for the members of the past several classes and older members who are near retirement to have great impact on these projects.

Intern Report

The Intern Class of 2016 will have completed their third training by the reading of this news letter. They are already involved in earning volunteer hours and Advanced Training. There is still some struggle with entering hours in the vms program however. The following are a few reminders. Intern Training is a unique entry for interns only. Once you have certi-fied, this will no longer show up in your Opportunity. It is listed as Initial Training. It is not Advanced Training, nor is it Volunteer Opportunity. It is Initial Training. Volunteer Opportunities are volunteer ac-tivities that you conduct at approved locations or with approved entities in accordance with the missions of TMN. Each of you has this list. Please keep it handy while you are learning. Remember that when you conduct volunteer work, you are allowed to count your travel time as part of the hours served. There is no separate place to record travel time. It is part of the total time you volunteered that day. Each activity you conduct requires its on vms entry. If you do the same place multiple days in a row, you must record each day separately. Finally, as you attend Advanced Training Programs, select from your list of approved topics or sources. If something comes up that is not on the list, let Chad know. It will happen. However, most of what you will encounter in South Texas is on the approved list. Ask Cindy or Chad if you ever have trouble. There are better things to get frustrated over than vms hours.

The mission of the Master Naturalist Programs is “to develop a corps of well-informed volunteers who provide education, outreach, and service dedicated to the beneficial management of natural resources and natural areas within their communities for the state of Texas.”

Permanent Volunteer Opper-tunities: these opportunities occur year

round on regular schedule. All members are welcome to participate.

Blucher Park Cleanup each Monday 5pm to whenever. Located behind Central Library. Glovers, protective clothing, trash bags, binoc-ulars if you want to do some birding. Main-tained by City of CC and Audubon Outdoor Club Oso Park #2 Third Saturday each month. Located at end of Cimmeron Rd. at Oso Bay. Turn left off Cimmeron Rd onto Picante St; at end of street turn right. Parking lot 1 block south. This is a primitive bike and hike park. Invasive removal/trail trimming. Dress for yard work Egery Flats. Bayside, Tx. Twice annually (Spring and Fall). Watch for notifications of workdays. Texas SeaLife Center located at entrance of Packery Channel Nature Park.
