I wish you could sit with me each day and visit with the remarkable people who come in our door at the Foundation. While each of them brings their own special gift they are all motivated by one common goal: to enrich the lives of others through education to build brighter futures. I’m humbled by their generosity of time, talent and financial support. It is amazing to visit with many of our graduate’s families as they express the generous scholarship that their children received from the Foundation.

We welcome some of our newest donors; those recent scholarship recipients who have joined our “Pay it Forward” campaign by donating a minimum of $10.00 each year to our Winners Circle Scholarship.

This year we extend thanks to our four departing foundation board members, Sue Brezny, Adam Carter, Tom Darden, Mary Molumby, and Mike Schenian. Their hard work and dedication to the foundation will be greatly missed. Without their leadership, foresight and energies we would not be where we are today.

As we bid farewell to our outgoing board members we welcome our newest foundation board members Kyle Edsten, LaVonne Francis, Catherine Grimshaw, Meghan Ruecker, Carmen Sanchez, and Keith Wells. We look forward to their leadership.

I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to our benefactors, volunteers and the foundation board. Your dedication and commitment are the backbone of this Foundation. Your generous contributions of time, talent and financial resources know no bounds and they truly change the direction of our student’s lives.

It is my pleasure to submit this annual report of the South St Paul Educational Foundation. I hope you enjoy reading about the programs and scholarships that were funded through the Foundation in the 2014-2015 school year.

Warmest regards,

Cari VujovichExecutive Director

our students Benefit froM every Gift - LarGe or sMaLL The Foundation enthusiastically looks forward to your gifts of time, talents and monies as we continue our support for programs, projects and scholarships for the students and staff of South St. Paul Public Schools. You are welcome to visit the Foundation office at 521 Marie Avenue in South St. Paul to discuss volunteer opportunities or pick up a donation form. You can mail contributions with a note or make a gift online on our website (www.sspef.com).

South St. Paul school employees can make payroll deductions. Many companies have matching gift programs. Shares of stock are a welcome gift to the

South St. Paul Educational Foundation and often benefit the donor as well. Your donation is tax-deductible, based on your original purchase price or value on the date of the gift. In either case, you can contribute without touching cash accounts or incurring out-of-pocket expense. The future will present many opportunities and challenges. Our ability to meet them successfully depends upon the partnerships that we develop. Together we can meet the challenges that lie ahead. We invite you to join us! Math tournaMent deveLoPed to heLP 4th-5th GradersA request was made by David Ericson for two MathDice Tournament Kits, tournament certificates, and supplies, which was eagerly supported by the SSPEF. These kits will allow a mathematics tournament for 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students whose test scores show they are slightly below math proficiency. The tournament would allow the students to practice their math and compete among grade level teams.

This past year it was held on Wednesday, September 23, 2014. The weather was great and we had 800 enthusiastic walkers and runners who participated in the 5-kilometer (or 3.106856 mile) walk/run. The South St. Paul Educational Foundation would like to thank the many donors, sponsors, volunteers and participants who made the 26th annual Walk-a-thon so successful. Over $35,000 was raised to help support special student projects and events. We wish to express a special thanks to our Gold Sponsors – Burger King, Dale and Bette Schenian, CHS, City Auto Glass, Upper River Services, Key Community Bank, MacKay Mitchell Envelope Company, Twin City Hide, Sanimax, LLC, South St. Paul Lions Club, Matties, Milbert Company/Culligan and VFW Post 295. rekenreks arrive for k-2 and sPeciaL ed cLassesThe term Rekenrek may sound like it is something that belongs out on a playground, but it is actually a wonderful mathematical tool to help children learn about numbers, build fluency, and compute using number relationships. The Rekenrek is a visual way that children can learn to develop a strong sense of five and ten. They can use the Rekenrek to count, add, or decompose numbers.

In March Susan Stabnow presented to the Foundation compelling evidence to support the learning benefits that could be achieved by using Rekenreks in the classroom. The Foundation was thrilled to be able to aid in the request! Thanks to you, our donors, 38 classroom sets (to serve 1100 students) were purchased!

roxanne BLiss siLver aPPLe aWard 2015 reciPientsKristen Spanjers, a Kindergarten teacher at Lincoln Center and Jodi White, a 2nd grade teacher at Kaposia were presented the 18th Annual “Roxanne Bliss Silver Apple Award” from the South St. Paul Educational Foundation. Don Bliss, SSP Class of 1950 established the Silver Apple Award in honor of his wife, Roxanne Waldhauser Bliss, SSP Class of 1951. This award was created to encourage students to appreciate educators or

support staff who are especially important to them. It is their belief that school employees play a very instrumental role in the future success of students. Students nominate a teacher or other employee who

made a significant difference in their lives. Award recipients received a silver apple commemorating the award, as well as a cash stipend.

Gardeners’ PLants heLP send kinderGarteners to dodGe nature centerThere are two events that seamlessly come together each spring in the South St. Paul Community: the South St. Paul Garden Club’s Annual Plant Sale and the kindergarten trip to Dodge Nature Center. What is so wonderful about these seemingly unrelated events is that the proceeds from the garden sale have been directly designated to benefit this much-anticipated yearly excursion for the children. By working with the SSPEF, the Garden Club is able pass along the funding to cover the children’s trip to the DNC! For 24 years the talented members of the Garden Club have been selling their plants in the wildly popular annual sale. The Foundation wishes to thank them, again, for supporting all of the kindergarteners from Lincoln Center and Kaposia so they can get the chance to engage, first hand, in their PYP Unit on animals!

“taLk, read and Write” ProGraM Benefits district’s PreschooLers Dawn Rehn reached out to the Foundation to request the purchase of 475 books as a resource for preschoolers and their families. Rehn explained that she would purchase bilingual books for the pre-K students to read in the classroom and then have available to check out from the library to bring home to their families. The selected books have both English and Spanish on each page so non-native Spanish speakers are able to read their own language and see the English version, as well. Rehn explained that the project is called “Talk, Read and Write” as children also have the opportunity to draw pictures about the books or what they have talked about with their families after reading the books at home. Research has proven that reading to your children is the most important element of school success.

Winners circLe schoLarshiP

The Winners Circle scholarship was formed in 2009 by past scholarship recipients to pay it forward. The Foundation sent out an appeal asking former scholarship recipients to join this group and reflect on the education that they received from South St. Paul public schools. South St. Paul has long believed that an investment in a child’s education was an investment in its future. Not only has this community believed this but is has acted on this belief.

We would like to thank all our former scholarship recipients who have joined the Winners Circle to make this scholarship a reality. This annual appeal is sent out each year to all former scholarship recipients asking them to join and/or continue to support the Winners Circle. We ask each recipient to contribute $10.00 a year or whatever they can give. Over 2000 students have received scholarship from the South St. Paul Educational Foundation totaling over $3,000,000 dollars since 1984. It is amazing to think what we could do if everyone pulled together to establish the Winners Circle as a permanent scholarship fund.

neW schoLarshiPsestaBLished in 2014-2015Each year new scholarship opportunities for South St. Paul High School seniors are provided through the generous donations of sponsoring groups, individuals, and organizations. On behalf of the recipients, we extend our appreciation to those who established the following scholarships in 2014-2015.

officer GraveM schoLarshiP Officer Gravem was the resource officer at South St. Paul High School until his retirement in 2014. He established this scholarship for a student interested in a career in law enforcement.

dr. harry WeBB This scholarship is awarded in honor of Dr. Harry Webb who passed away in 2014 at the age of 94. Dr. Harry Webb is the father of our current South Saint Paul Public Schools Superintendent, Dr. Dave Webb. Harry loved his family and loved the arts. His gifts in photography, movie production, painting, and music inspired those around him. He taught photography at both the University of Minnesota as well as the University of St.

Thomas, where he also served as the Audio Visual Director for 35 years. heLen v. schaefer MeMoriaL This scholarship was established by family and friends of Helen Schaefer. Helen highly valued the importance of education as well as service to her community. Her dedication to the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Gallagher Hansen VFW Post 295, especially their blood donor program were demonstrated by her decades of service to SSP and surrounding communities. Jane stassen MeMoriaLThis scholarship was established in memory of Jane Stassen, a lifetime resident of SSP, and an employee of the SSP School District for 24 years - acting most recently as Director of Curriculum and Instruction and Staff Development. Jane had a passion for education and worked tirelessly to give the students of SSP the best opportunities possible. Even though her chosen path was education, Jane was always fascinated by the weather. She was curious about how things worked, and what the science was behind occurrences in everyday life. Jane often said she would have loved to be a meteorologist, but the opportunity just wasn’t available back when she was in

school. The purpose of this scholarship is to provide support to a female student interested in pursuing a career in the STEM disciplines because that was an opportunity Jane would have loved to have for herself. MadGe and BiLL Pederson This scholarship was established by family and friends of Madge and Bill who moved to SSP after they were married in 1973. Bill was a SSP State Farm insurance agent for 19 years and Madge worked for SSP schools for 18 years. Their daughters, Nicole and Bethany, both SSP graduates received scholarships from the Foundation. doris PoferaL education schoLarshiP This scholarship was established by the four daughters, Susan, Lynn, Rita and Jeanne of Doris Poferal because of their strong belief in the value of a child’s education. Doris was actively involved as a teacher’s aide in her later years. She wanted each child to feel successful through continued practice and guidance.

What if there was a way to help restless students (particularly those with ADD and ADHD) be active while seated? The Kids Kore Wobble Chair is a simple seat designed to allow movement when children are required to sit, but it’s not too wobbly that the child tips over. Research suggests that “therapy sessions” happen without the child even knowing it. The students who are using the chairs will journal their reactions and feelings about them.

headPhones heLP south st. PauL readersJillie Manders, who teaches Functional Reading classes requested headphones as an aid in her classroom. Manders explained that students in her class currently use the reading program Lexia Strategies, which focuses on remedial reading and phonics skills. The program includes audio, which requires headphones to avoid distraction and enhance listening clarity. Thanks to the Kandt Fund, the SSPEF was able to grant Manders’ request to purchase 15 headphones for her classes!

art GaLLery created to disPLay student WorkLincoln Center’s Elizabeth Roszak and Sheryl St. John recognized that student artwork was plentiful, but there just was no space within the school to display it all. They recognized that putting children’s masterpieces on display would be a wonderful way to compliment the children and boost their confidence. The Foundation found the perfect funding source in the Arts Appreciation Endowed Fund and was able to help get the project off the ground. Everyone agreed that art should be displayed and shared with others.

LincoLn center P.e. dePartMent receives neW equiPMentSchools recognize that students need more physical activity yet time designated for Physical Education each week lessens as other subjects take precedence. It was brought to the attention of the SSPEF that when students did get the opportunities for P.E., the gym equipment was broken, in poor shape, or missing pieces to the sets. Thanks to the Lincoln Center PTA and the Pat Eger Fund within SSPEF, funding was made available for the school to buy replacement equipment, such as badminton racquets, hula-hoops, scoops, basketballs, soccer balls, etc.

9th Graders see shakesPeare’s roMeo and JuLiet PerforMed Live!In order to provide a cultural experience and to facilitate the eventual reading of the test the 9th grade Literature classes were given the opportunity to attend Park Square Theatre’s performance of Romeo and Juliet last spring. Sue McDaniel, literature teacher, believes that providing opportunities to see live performances of works studied in class is a wonderful way to make text come alive.

haLf-size huMan skeLetons serve 7th Graders & More! For years South Saint Paul Secondary School (SSPSS) has had one full-size skeleton to serve the high demand of its IB Biology and Life science classes. The Foundation learned that through time, the skeleton had lost many of its vital parts, making it less helpful for teaching purposes.

David Fassler, an instructor within the Science Department, learned that a local company produces half-sized skeletons that are perfectly suited to SSPSS’s classroom needs. Through the support of a grant and the SSPEF, eight half-sized skeletons were purchased for each classroom lab table. Each lab table receives its own skeleton. Students benefit from being able to really examine the skeletal models while the instructor is teaching.

Where fun and fundinG Meet

The South St. Paul Educational Foundation held its 5th Annual Friends of the Foundation celebration on Thursday, August 21st at Southview Country Club. Friends of the Foundation gathered to show support for the Educational Foundation and its efforts of enriching the lives of South St. Paul students. Over $25,000 was raised to help support programs for students of South St. Paul public schools.

The evening was filled with great food and refreshments, and a live and silent auction. We were pleased to honor all former and present South St. Paul Educational Foundation Board Members for their continued support and dedication to the Foundation.

The event was a huge success and we thank our donors, guests and volunteers who participated. Plan to join us next year for this great event!!

kaPosia exceLLence fundsEndowed Funds provide the opportunity to recognize specific interests through designated named endowed funds. These funds - often named to recognize donors, teachers, classmates or family - may be established with gifts of $25,000 or more to provide permanent annual support for programs and special curriculum enhancements in South St. Paul Public Schools. Gifts of any size may be added at any time to established funds. Permanent endowed funds keep on giving year after year because the gift is invested by the Foundation to provide perpetual funding. To learn more, contact the Foundation office at 651-457-9440.
