Message from the President and Foundation Chair

Dear Friends,
At South Seattle Community College, we tell our students “Start here, go anywhere!” Our primary goal is to help our students achieve their professional dreams. From professional technical certificates, to our bachelor degree programs we offer our students a hands-on learning environment that stimulates their minds and prepares them to achieve their professional dreams.
Our dedicated faculty and staff provide a supportive learning environment that is designed to bring out the best in our students. When you combine that with the wonderful support of our community, it is a recipe for student success and a bright future!
In this edition of the “Report to the Community,” we are excited to share the achievements of students who represent a wide variety of backgrounds and aspirations and highlight our talented faculty, staff, and our community partners, who are also covered in this issue.
South Seattle Community College along with its many individual, corporate, and foundation supporters has been a vital component of our student success. We are proud to produce students that are future ready wherever their career path may take them.
Foundation highlights include:
• An increase in the 13th Year Promise Scholarship students helped ensure another successful class of participants. The 13th Year Scholarship guarantees every graduate from Cleveland High School and Chief Sealth International High School one free year of tuition at South.
• 240 students were awarded scholarships from South’s Foundation awarded $607,443 in scholarships for our deserving students.
We are grateful for the ongoing support from donors, supporters and alumni. We invite you to share our success with friends, family and colleagues. Please plan to visit us soon, either in person or on our website at www.southseattle.edu. And remember, “Start here, go anywhere!” Sincerely,
Gary Oertli, President Gene J. Colin, ChairSouth Seattle Community College South Seattle Community College, Foundation

The South Seattle Community College Foundation recognizes the important role faculty members have in the college and has made funding faculty development a priority. Funding opportunities exist
for full-time and part-time faculty members to fund projects that encourage and promote student retention, assessment, completion and transfer to four-year colleges. Since 2006, the Foundation has awarded nearly 100 grants to faculty members. In 2012, grants were awarded for curriculum
development, teaching and instruction which benefit our students.
