Principal’s MessageCongratulations to members of the College band, South Campus band and choir who, under the expert guidance of Mrs O, conducted a tour of primary schools recently. I have had glowing feedback from the schools whom hosted the visits and am extremely proud of the ongoing commitment and representation that these staff and students display.

Noted staff achievement was rewarded at the recent Minister’s Awards for Excellence in Sydney. Mrs Thompson, in her acceptance of this award, thanked staff for their support and acknowledged that programs within the school are the result of a team effort. Congratulations Mrs Thompson!

I would also like to make special mention of our success in the Serisier Cup. Our combined teams skill and sportsmanship saw us defeat Delroy Campus 7 to 4. Congratulations to the following student for their selection as Best and Fairest in their respective sports: Koda Sissian, Blake Merrit, Zoe Mc Aneney, Mirakai Powell, Jesse Spang, Mackenzie Schulz, Chelsea Dodd, Jack Wallbridge, Jacob French, Janaya Rose and Letrelle Bamblett.

The recent sporting success of students Ella Murray, Jesse Spang and Will Cuthill, deservedly have pride of place in this week’s newsletter. I look forward to sharing their success along with many other students, who will be commended for their sporting prowess at the College Celebration of Sport on the 24 September.

We have lots of events on offer this term for parents to participate in and visit our campus. I look forward to seeing you at the upcoming events: Creative Arts Night 19 September, Character Day 21 September, Naidoc Day 27 September, and the Year 6 - 7 Afternoon Tea 26 September.

CAPA CRAZINESSCAPA faculty were responsible for the running of our formal assembly in Week 6. Not only did we hear from Head Space about Wear It Purple day but the students saw a unique performance by sculptors along with the College Band and Elective Bands. Eleven clay blobs were attacked by artists who had to render a likeness in the time

three songs were performed on stage. The artists created their pieces while working to the performances of Viva La Vida, Forget You and  Zombie.  The inspiration behind this activity came from the Year 10 Elective Visual Arts Portraiture Unit. Creation of this form of sculpture for assessment would normally take weeks. In this activity the participants had twelve minutes.

It is important to acknowledge the wonderful efforts of the College Band and Michelle O’Callaghan. These wonderful people performed at multiple public events and Week 6 marked their fifth public performance. The group have also been on the road touring to outlying Public Schools and some local Primary Schools to share their music and talent which was much appreciated.

Under 15’s Girls BasketballRound 1 of the Under 15’s CHS Tornament was highly successful with South Campus winning all games convincingly against Cobar (27-1), Delroy (48-8) and Gilgandra (22-3). This meant the Girls progressed to the Western Area finals in West Wyalong to play the top teams in other regions. The day was hard fought and very competitive with all teams involved stepping it up and playing strong basketball. After a 5.00 am start from Dubbo, our hosts West Wyalong defeated us 24-15. Our second game was our toughest one yet, going into extra time South Campus finished on top of Orange High. In our third game South Campus convincingly beat Bathurst 39-14. Although the Dubbo girls finished equal first with 2 other teams, we missed out on second place by two points. Paycee Cubby, Ebony Furner and Khiarna Hargraves all played consistently well over the two competition days with strong attacking down the court and solid defense.

Serisier Cup Rugby League 9’ Girls Serisier Cup Basketball 15’s Girls

Under 16’s Girls Rugby League

On 9 August our girls were able to play a sport that they all love, but had only few opportunities to play; Rugby League 9’s. With a few teams pulling out of the tournament in the upcoming days was left one game to play. This game was with our College rival team from Delroy Campus. Delroy’s defence was strongly led by Kristina Brown inspiring our girls to cut off their defence. Combined with the brilliant organisation of Skye Crawford, who led the girls going forward in attack, the South Campus Girls won 14 to Delroy’s 4.

SERISIER CUP returns to Dubbo College South CampusOur Serisier Cup Teams were outstanding in their effort in this competition and we would like to celebrate the achievement of some of our athletes who will receive “Best and Fairest” Awards.

Well done: Koda Sissian (Yr 7/8 Rugby League), Blake Merritt (Yr 9/10 Rugby League), Zoe McAneney (Yr 7/8 Netball), Mirakai Powell (Yr 9/10 Netball), Jesse Spang (Yr 7-10 Boys Soccer), Mackenzie Schulz

(Yr 7-10 Girls Soccer), Chelsea Dodd (Yr 7-10 Girls Hockey), Jack Wallbridge (Yr 7-10 Boys Basketball), Jacob French (Yr 7-10 Boys Touch) and Janaya Rose (Yr 7-10 Girls Touch).

Recycling Matters

A group of our environmentally minded students have been out and about again collecting bottles and cans to raise money for their classrooms. Their latest efforts has enabled the students to purchase much needed items. Phillip Jackson is one of the team members and is proudly showing off their latest purchases.

Dreamtime TukaOn Thursday 23 August Year 10 Food Technology students participated in a talk by Herb Smith, founder of ‘Dreamtime Tuka’. Herb is a Wiradjuri man who was born in Wellington. His company was the first to produce native bush foods which are 100%

Aboriginal owned and operated. Currently his slices are being served as a snack on Qantas’ regional and domestic fights.

Dubbo College South Campus would like to thank Herb for giving up his time to speak with the students about his success in the food industry. He has

passion and drive doing what he loves. This talk was a great inspiration for many seeing Herb achieve what he has in a short period of time. Students we told there are no barriers to achieve what you want, no matter your age, race, upbringing or geographic location.

QuestaconStudents at South were recently treated to some engaging Science workshops hosted by Questacon staff. Students were required to use digital and real resources to design, create and test a platform for receiving drone deliveries to a home. With limited time and resources students had to come up with a structurally sound design that would be able to be attached to an existing window of a home so that drone deliveries can be safe and secure. The Questacon staff commented that the students from South Campus were particularly well behaved and their inventions were both creative and successful in achieving the outcomes of the project.

JOBS EXPO WITH OPPORTUNITY HUBOpportunity Hubs are about building strong partnerships with schools, local businesses and services providers to provide opportunities for young people to connect to further training and or employment activities.

Dubbo Opportunity Hub and Training Services NSW have collaborated with VERTO, Skillset, Girls Academy, Australian Defence Force and Department of Education to host a Jobs Expo on Tuesday, 18 September 2018 to support students years 9-12  in finding a pathway for their future endeavours.

The Jobs Expo will have employers hosting stalls and providing speed dating sessions with students to provide specific information about their industry. This Expo aims to build a future where young people have a purpose and become active citizens in our community. We have asked employers to come along with opportunities that may lead to a job, work experience and are prepared to be a mentor.

On the day there will young role models speaking about how work and careers have changed their lives, an invitation is extended to students to come along and participate,  the Jobs Expo will be open from 9am to 4pm at the Dubbo Convention Centre.

Students will need to come prepared with current copies

of their resume. If they need assistance with this, please let me know. We have staff available to create remarkable resumes and we can accommodate students if they are interested.

If parents or students have questions about the Jobs Expo or parents would like to attend with their child, interest can be registered with Diana Turner at   [email protected], alternatively please call 6883 3500.

Year 9 Child Studies students have been studying Safety in Childhood in class this term and in Week 6 they went on an excursion to explore safety in a variety of environments including  playground areas and roads. Here are some pictures of the students on excursion. excursion.

Garden Club Another great GARDEN CLUB day was had on Sunday 9. About 13 staff, parents and 4 students came along and did a massive amount of weeding and mulching. Now with the warmer weather the weeds are emerging with help from a little bit of rain. We are hoping to keep on top of this massive task.

After one and a half hours of hard work, we swooped on the T1 kitchen for coffee and a mexican breakfast of eggs, salsa and tortillas. French toast and bacon for the less adventurous was also on the menu. The amount of work to do is quite overwhelming so it was great to have such hardworking helpers. We will have another gardening Sunday next term so keep your eyes peeled.
