South Petherton Carnival 2010

Programme – Chairman’s Introduction Welcome to the Programme for South Petherton Carnival 2010.

I hope that you will find this programme useful. Please use the

companies that advertise whenever possible. The business

community is one of our largest fundraisers without them the

Carnival could not exist.

Last year we raised over £3,000 for local causes and

organisations. This was only possible due to your generosity.

Throughout the year various fundraising events are held and I

must particularly thank the Brewers Arms, The Cricket Club, the

Pavilion committee and South Petherton Walking Group for their

help. This year the Carnival Week will again start with a Family

Fun Day and finish with the procession through the village on

Saturday evening. Details can be found at the

centre of the programme.

I hope that you will enjoy this years Carnival. This is an

occasion, for the whole community and you will be helping

others just by having a good time!

Finally, I would like to thank all those who have supported the

Carnival throughout the year in many ways.

FUN FAIR WILL BE AT THE RECREATION GROUND

FROM WEDNESDAY 8TH SEPTEMBER TO SATURDAY 11TH.

A New Community Building in South Petherton

The Scout Group is still busy raising funds for a new Community building. Our target is to replace the second-hand wooden Scout Hut on the Recreation

ground with a purpose-built hall that will not only meet the needs of the Scouts and the Out-of-School Club who currently meet there, but will also provide a

suitable venue for all manner of other events and activities. For instance, it will be ideal for indoor sports, and its location in a quiet corner of the Recreation Ground is perfect for children's parties. It will also be available for business

meetings and seminars during the day.

Our fund-raising effort continues, though it has been slow during these difficult financial times. Look out for details of our forthcoming events, the next being a

barn dance at Yeabridge on November 20th.

South Petherton Out of School Club welcomes children from South Petherton Infant and Junior Schools after school from 3.15pm to 6.00pm

from Monday to Friday in term time.

The club provides a safe, homely atmosphere for children to enjoy time playing with friends at the end of the school day.

The club employs three members of staff, all of whom live in South Petherton

and is based at the scout hut on South Petherton recreation ground. There are regular activities organised including art and craft, sport and forest skills and

these can be accessed by children on an ad hoc basis.

South Petherton Social Club

Ilminster lions Club who are manning the collecting float on behalf of

the Carnival have had another busy 12 months since the last carnival. In

addition to their ‘standard’ events like the Charity 10k, the Summer Fete,

the Teddy Bear Stall, their Christmas Bazaar held here in South

Petherton, they now run car boot sales in Tesco Ilminster car park and

man the gates at events such as the Taunton Flower Show and Yesterdays

Farming. At the recent Taunton Flower Show they managed in the 2 days

to raise over £1400 for the purchase of a specialist bed for the Children’s

ward in Musgrove Park Hospital. Meanwhile they are working towards

building a significant sum to donate to The Somerset & Dorset Air

Ambulance.

The next couple of events are another Car Boot sale at Tesco’s Ilminster

on Sunday 26th September; sellers £5 a vehicle, vans and trailers £7.

Buyers get in for free but a donation to Lions charities will always be

appreciated. Then 6 weeks later on Sunday 7th November there will be

the Annual Charity 10K attracting up to 400 runners. An entry form can

be downloaded from the club’s web site www.ilminsterlionsclub.co.uk.

In the just ended financial year the Lions club has donated some £16000 to

local good causes. Taken over the 34 years that the club has been in

existence it is estimated that upwards of £400,000 has been donated to

local charities. None of this would have been possible without the

incredible generosity and support from local communities.

The Community Information Centre and Police Post has been open now for 9 months and is becoming an established source of information for the Parish as well as a focal point for local societies and organisations. Current examples include using the Centre as base for SP Recycle (a new way of swapping unwanted items), which is a SP

Breathe initiative.

The SP Photographic Society is using the Centre as a collection point for its recent young people’s photographic competition and many organisations are using it to promote events and meetings. In addition, for example, the Centre is a source of

travel information, a place to see planning applications and an opportunity to leave messages for the police.
