The story of South Maroubra SLSC is a long and distinguished one which covers several generations and has seen the club move from a small group of locals housed in an old second-hand fibro shed, donated by Prince Henry Hospital and perched on the sand dunes of South Maroubra, to a now thriving and diverse community accommodated in an impressive and modern building. Move forward sixty odd years and whilst the size of the club has grown exponentially and the club house developed into something a little bit more impressive than a fibro hut the role of the club has essentially remained the same, that is, a place of mateship where everyone is valued and welcome. We continue to be a service provider that develops surf awareness and confidence in our young kids so as to prepare them for a future role as a surf lifesaver, a learning centre producing skilled lifesavers who give up their time voluntarily to help others, a place where members are encouraged to reach their competitive goals and most importantly a place where sponsorship money is invested knowing it will build a stronger community.
SO, TO OTHER MATTERS FOR THIS SEASON IN REVIEW.I once again start this report by extending my appreciation to the Office Bearers of South Maroubra SLSC who have provided leadership and governance throughout what was another very busy year.
Those that have had the fortune to manage Surf Life Saving Clubs know that the season is a 12 month commitment with no real off season so whilst patrols have concluded, IRB competition is underway along with planning for Presentation night and the AGM, followed by debriefing of the past year and planning for next.
Reviewing Lifesaving/Education over the 2016/17 season at South Maroubra SLSC I am able to report our members were directly involved in rescuing 128 swimmers, 6182 preventative actions completed, 860 members of the public were treated for a range of first aid cases, all in all a very busy year. Whilst I am pleased to report there were No Lives Lost during patrol hours, which is always a significant achievement, sadly the same cannot be said for after
hours. Many will know a 14-year-old boy and his cousin from Western Sydney entered the notorious south end rip at Maroubra Beach around 8pm late December 2016 where he was immediately pulled out to sea and soon after drowned, his young cousin was rescued by a passer-by.
It is appropriate I mention the efforts of South Maroubra SLSC members on the night putting their hands up to help authorities with the immediate search, and also the following days with IRBs searching for the victim who was sadly found some days later. I was proud to see Damien and our lifesaving team make it their mission not to let Tui’s loss be in vain and accordingly set about developing a practical after-hours rescue device named Tui’s Rescue tube, developed as an afterhours rescue device and securely stored and available in known danger areas like the south end rip. Well done to our people for the foresight and commitment to safety and well done to Randwick Council for picking up the concept.
Within the Education Services space our club continues to improve on the quality, quantity and variety of courses being offered with the increasing number of valued trainers. In total 151 Awards were completed within the senior club and an additional 403 Surf Ed awards. Congratulations to all of the trainers and special mention to Nicole Cooney on her honour as Branch Trainer of the Year. Well done to all involved!
Competition wise throughout the 2016/17 season our members did the club proud in and out of the water with IRB competition underway at the time of writing. I am really proud to report a number of our members entered into and completed the Coolangatta Gold which is a first in recent years. Plans are underway for next season and a range of strategies being put in place for competition training and development with an emphasis on transition from Nippers to the Senior Club.
This season we were fortunate to secure funding for a new Surf Boat, the pride of our surf boat fleet and affectionately known as the Irish Rose in memory of Dympna Fownes (dec) who was a long-time supporter of our club. Thanks are extended to Maroubra Seals Club and Top Cat Catering, Jenny and Greg Eliades, who largely funded the boat

and equipment along with the Fownes family for their generous support. The purchase of this beautiful black boat is in recognition of efforts of Phil Stivano and his highly competitive Junior and Open/Masters crew.
Nippers had another fantastic year and again has key people playing important roles. Well done to the leadership team on their efforts in coordinating this dynamic group and well done to Age Managers, Assistant Age Managers, Coaches, Water Safety who have done really well all year. I was again very pleased to see our Nippers once again feature in the Top 10 at the State Titles, a testament to the skills of the coaching group and most importantly the future lifesavers.
During this past season, the story of our Nippers was captured by an ABC documentary film crew who examined the diverse nature of South Maroubra SLSC nippers throughout a full season following several of them through a range of activities and traditional Sunday events. Our Nippers have been a strong part of our club since their inception back in the days of Bruce Rutherford and Ray Robbo many years ago, their legacy continues today with a new generation of kids and leadership. The TV show will be aired on Channel 2 as we head towards next season and without a doubt will attract more young members and hopefully a greater level of sponsorship and support.
Club wise, we have once again had an extremely busy season with the return of the South Maroubra Ocean Swim in February 2017 which was an outstanding success and certainly something we want to continue to build, congratulations to Simon and his team for the work done to pull this off. As we do so well at South Maroubra we conducted a number of events that are synonymous with South Maroubra and double up as fundraising in support of sections and the club including Octoberfest, Sportsman’s Day, Golf fundraiser, State of Origin Night, Nipper Trivia Night, and the Australia Day Social. We hosted an IRB carnival round on the 22nd July 2016 which was a tremendous success despite poor weather! It goes without saying that a big thank you is directed to all members who played a role in the success of these events.
Sponsorship, is critical for any club as they work to keep the doors open and bills paid. Our club has been well supported in past years but we find this an ongoing challenge which is why our club works hard to run our own fundraising events. Our full list of club sponsors can be located within the Sponsorship section of this annual report but it is particularly important I acknowledge the clubs major sponsors including Maroubra Seals Sport and Community Club, South Juniors Chain of Clubs at Kingsford, Maroubra and Malabar, Top Cat Catering, Randwick City Council, and Caltex Terminal Banksmeadow. The club is desperate for a Sponsorship coordinator so if you have some skills in handling sponsorship enquiries we’d very much love to hear from you.
I also take the opportunity to thank our community leaders including Mayor D’Souza and Anthony Andrew and all of the Councillors from Randwick Council for their ongoing support of our entire club. To Michael Daley MP who this year supported our efforts to secure South Maroubra SLSC from the significant weather events such as east coast lows that have caused a great deal of damage over recent years. Michael has stumped up the funds to carry out these extensive works which you will see happening over the next several months.
Thanks to Federal MP Matt Thistlethwaite for his support in particular with the water quality issues emanating from the rifle range, I’m pleased to say that tests show there are no reasons to be concerned and ongoing monitoring will continue to take place particularly around the rock pool and after weather events. It would be remiss of me not to mention the departure from Local Government of former Mayor and supporter of our club Scott Nash who was instrumental in financially supporting the club during major club renovations. Thank you, Scott and good luck, on the professional front.
Sharing our good fortune is a major trait of South Maroubra SLSC where we understand that our club facilities should be shared with others in our community. Throughout 2016/17 season our club has utilised by the following organisations; Local Schools, a range of Commands within the New South Wales Police Force and other government entities, Sporting groups including Maroubra Football Club, Narrabri Football Club, South Sydney ‘Rabbitohs’ Football Club, Ramsgate Public School’s Band camp, Randwick Council to name a few.
Finally, I conclude this years report by taking the opportunity to thank Gus Taylor our Club Licensee, Ken Hudson a club all-rounder, Barry and Leslie our wonderful Caretakers and all who have supported club operations, Rick from Ricks Refrigeration, Alex Pavlakis PIA Security Services and of course our ever reliable office manager Michelle Lo supported by June Burgess.
A collective thank you to everyone who has supported the operation of our club.
I look forward to seeing you all next season.

I’m happy to say that once again we have No Lives Lost between the flags during the season. As a Surf Life Saving Club, we should never forget that keeping the public safe on our beach is and will always be our primary objective. We are considerably lucky to have a great team of members who dedicated their time and skills to this objective and in such keep our beach safe with expecting nothing in return. This season we also saw a number of members offer their time to search and rescue operations outside of usual patrol duties.
Surf Lifesaving is an institution that offers many avenues and opportunities to people of differing ages, abilities, experiences and backgrounds. It’s quite rare that an organisation provides so many opportunities, especially a volunteer one. The diverse range of opportunities and as such the many different roles and the volunteer hours members donate to Surf Lifesaving deserves recognition and acknowledgement. On the beach we have a fantastic team of Lifesavers who give many hours of service to patrols and water safety. To prepare these members for the responsibilities we have our dedicated Education Team who give so many hours of their spare time to ensuring our members are highly trained.
We have motivated competitors who benefit from volunteer coaches, section leaders, surf sport officials and a competition team. Behind the scenes, the time devoted to administration tasks and finance cannot be forgotten. Members also freely donate their skills and services towards fundraising, catering, social events, bar service, repairing club gear and equipment, and upgrading club facilities. Our Junior Activities Team work hard in preparing and supporting our junior members – our future lifesavers and leaders.
Much has happened this season; just to name a few we had Octoberfest, Sportsman’s Day, Trivia Night, Origin Night Fundraiser, and we can’t forget the successful return of ocean swimming at our beautiful beach with the South Maroubra Ocean Challenge in February 2017.
Our social presence continues to grow with the South Maroubra SLSC Facebook and Instagram pages growing, and viewed by the majority of our membership. If you’re not already following us be sure to start now, the pages are a great way to keep abreast of everything that is SMSLSC including events, club information and of course all the great photos (new and old).
At last year’s Annual General Meeting we saw Peter Murphy elected to Life Membership. Congratulations to Peter.
I would like to thank everyone on the Board of Management, Lifesaving, Nippers, and Competition Committees for the help and guidance throughout this season. Thank you to Michelle and June in the office for all your work and help this season. I’m looking forward to the new season.

ADMINISTRATION REPORT
On behalf of the Board of Management, I present for your consideration and adoption the 59th Annual Report and Financial Statement of South Maroubra Surf Life Saving Club for the Season 2016/17.

REVENUES
We maintained our traditional sources of income throughout the season, memberships revenue equated to 15%, donations/sponsorships/grants 47% & club activities 38%.
Overall Membership decreased by 4.32% this season. Our Cadet 13–15yr category benefited from a 48% growth however numbers were 20% lower in the Active 15-18yr category. All other membership groups were steady.
This season completed the 4th year of our association with Top Cat Catering who lease out the clubhouse Horizons Function Centre. (note: 1 year probationary period and 3 years contractual). The BOM are currently in final negotiations with Top Cat to continue its lease for another 3 years.
The Income and Expenditure report reflects an increase in our Donations/Sponsorship revenue which is a result of our new surf boat sponsors. We also recorded an increase in Sundry income resulting from financial donations which were used to offset the high cost of entry fees into the Ocean Thunder Series. All other revenue forms were fairly consistent with previous season.
Total income for the year $508,791
EXPENDITURE
Clubhouse Maintenance and Admin/General operations of the club make up 37% of club expenditure for the season. Examples of expenses from this area include the continued employment of part time office administration, member capitations, electrical/painting maintenance, installation of a new storage area and a mini revamp of the ladies toilet area.
Expenditure within the lifesaving section included purchases, most funded from the CDSE grants, included new IRB motors, fuel cells, propellers, IRB floors, Beach Trailers, lifesaver apparel and new Boards.
Increased expenditure within the Competition and our Nippers sections this season resulted from increased Touring Team Costs (State and National Championships), ever increasing carnival entry fees which included Ocean Thunder Surf Boat Series, Nipper Presentation and a doubling in nipper carnival entries due to a large expending & successful nipper comp team. New Oars and new Surf Boat were also purchased for the Boat Section.
Total Overall Expenditure $466,081

FUNCTIONS, EVENTS AND FUNDRAISING
Club activities bought a sound return to the club including the annual Oktoberfest, Sportsman Luncheon and Golf Day. This past season we replaced the hosting of our annual Nipper Surf Carnival with an Ocean Swim. The return of an Ocean Event at South Maroubra, after many years, was welcomed by the local community with over 500 starters. Sections within the club continue to enjoy profits from the Trivia and Boaties ‘State of Origin’ nights. The IRB Section also bring in valuable funds to assist with their touring costs by completing ‘water safety’ duties at a number of external aquatic events.
Thanks to our Club Licensee Gus Taylor, Caretaker Barry Osborne, Bar Staff, Warrick Bullen (Oktoberfest), Paul Fownes, Yvette and Linda Perrin (Sportsman Day), Jack Shaw (Golf Day), Marcelo Garay (Trivia), Phil Stivano (State of Origin Night), Simon Smith and Nicole Cooney (Ocean Swim) and members that contributed to the running of these events.
A large number of club member activities were also conducted including Gold Members/Associates Function, Start, Mid and End of Season lifesaving get togethers, Nippers disco and twilight bbq’s, Christmas Scramble together with numerous nipper and member Sunday socials and bbq’s. Expenditure on member activities decreased slightly.
Thanks to our Board Directors, Club Officers and members who supported and assisted our fundraising and member activities with a special shout out to our Social Coordinators Brad Ellison ably assisted by Club Secretary Nicole Cooney.
SPONSORSHIP, DONATIONS AND GRANTS
Souths Juniors donated funds to our club from the CDSE (Randwick ClubGRANTS Scheme) $40,000 allowing for the purchase of vital lifesaving equipment, apparel and education materials. Randwick City also honoured long standing agreements with the club and continued their grant to assist the club with expenses related to the building and administration. Disappointing to report that after 20 years of support from Botany Bay City Council, our club did not receive its annual $10K grant this year. We believe this is due to the council merge with Rockdale Council.
We acknowledgment the Maroubra Seals Club, Top Cat Catering and the Fownes Family for donating funds for the purchase of a new surf boat. To Bizley, Rams, Sydney City Volkswagen, Caltex, Cameron Airlie NG Farah, Audi Centre for their continued sponsorship and support of our club and to the Government Departments of Infrastructure and community grants. Further on in the Annual Report is a list and acknowledgment to all of our club sponsors and supporters where we pass on our sincere thanks and gratitude.
In closing, we are pleased to announce the success of our government grant application to secure funds for the provision of window and door shutters to protect the clubhouse building against the severe ‘southerly and east coast low’ weather that hits our doors and results in water damage to the club. The BOM has approved the installation of Solar panels which will be installed during the winter months.
Thank you to Michelle Lo, June Burgess and Maria Garay for all your assistance in the club office. The biggest shout out to Kelly Nichols, for her invaluable and expert guidance in the preparation of the financial statements for the club Auditor and finally my sincere thanks to Club Chairman Paul Fownes and Vice Chair Linda Perrin for their encouragement and support of my portfolio over the season.

Whilst our fundamental core business is protecting our beachgoers, saving lives and developing our youth into competent lifesavers, it’s vitally important that we promote and savour our social side of our club as well. It’s in this regard, that I feel we have some room for improvement. Whilst the support we receive from our much-valued members, extended family & friends along with our wider community is greatly appreciated, here’s some magnificent ways for you to gain access to the best kept secret venue in Sydney on a hot summers Sunday:
• Any Sunday through Summer: if you are willing to share the facilities, make your special occasion, event or family function on a Sunday from 11:00am onwards and enjoy our bar, room and grassed area facilities for no cost. You must purchase drinks from the bar but you can BYO food and even use our BBQ. We will provide tables, chairs and bar tables overlooking the beach for you and your guests. You can enjoy a cold one from our bar, serve up your BBQ, enjoy your lunch, use the kiosk facilities from Micks Shop and sunbake on our manicured lawn area with your family and friends.
• If you are the more private type and would like exclusivity, you can privately book the Heritage Room and Bernie Kelly Bar area as a member at COST PRICE. There are cleaning fees and staff costs.
In relation to our season just gone, we had some wonderful events that were well patronised. The NRL Grand Final day was in it’s prime with the hoards coming down to cheer and enjoy the rivalry along with the games of “Pick the Score”, “Churchill Medal Sweep” and “First Try Scorer auction”.
Oktoberfest was again a huge hit as we ventured out to the park to serve German sausages and Weissbier to the masses. This event is forever growing in popularity and it’s wonderful how our volunteer workforce responds in duty every year. BBQ Team headed up by Jack with his cast of thousands; Tony Bonehead Johnston, John Skid Marks, Bob Higgins, Peter Bulldog Murphy, Bluey, Bourkie, Tip Top, Dougie Woods, Pennie Underhill, Rhonda Marks, Jenny Johnston, Christine Murphy along with our wonderful cashiers Rainy Taylor, Becksta Simmiss, Emily Pockl-Phillips, Anne Engel and Linda Perrin. Our bar was kept flowing with the German Weiss stuff by our wonderful volunteer team of Brick, Big Dave, Layback Lenny, Matt Engel and Nick Mellick. Our logistical support staff of Alpine Summerauer was there again, ready to do what it takes. Warwick Bullen was instrumental in the planning, developing, preparing and execution of the day. ‘Wazza’ was key to the whole day.
We had plenty of our traditional days take place such as the Australia Day Big BBQ, Good Friday Fish BBQ, State of Origin night hosted by Phil Stivano and “The Boaties”, and Nippers Trivia Night. We hosted this season an Ocean Swim which saw plenty of participants take to the Pacific and was well followed up by our Annul Sportsman’s Lunch which headed upstairs to Horizons. This is another annual event proving very popular as the “FULL HOUSE” sign went up very quickly. Some very entertaining speakers were interviewed by the great Steve Chimes Gillis. I’d also like to mention Phillipa and Tom McJannet who are always there to assist with bar duties whenever required for these special days.
If I have failed to mention any names that have helped over the season, please accept my apologies. The beauty of our wonderful club is that there is always someone to

reach out, put their hand up to help and that’s what makes our club so great. I would like to acknowledge the Board of Management for another year of support, in all aspects of operation.
The following people must be singled out for special mention, because without them, my job is extremely difficult, if not impossible. On behalf of our Surf Club and community we thank you;
Baz “have a whinge” Osborne and the lovely Lesley: Baz goes above and beyond his role as caretaker and runs the bar and functions regularly. Baz looks after the week to week logistics of our bar and arranges staff and extras. Lesley is always there.
Life Member Ken Hudson: Ken is always there whenever I reach out for help. Nothing is too hard and time is never an issue. Ken just makes life easy. Simple.
Rick from RIX Refrigeration; Cold, crisp, clean beer just doesn’t appear. I would not be able to uphold and maintain all the behind the scenes technology and equipment without the support and help from Rick. Rick is always a phone call away and has never denied my cry for help.
Mick Fisher from The Juniors: Mick is always there to assist in anyway when we are hosting our bigger events. The Juniors, through Mick’s facilitation, provide much needed and sometimes essential logistical and equipment support. The Juniors continue to be a major contributor and supporter to all our beverage and licensing needs and for that I am extremely grateful.
Stretch: it may sound corny, but I’ll pay the price – Stretch is a true inspiration. His enthusiasm, leadership and will for our club to be the best is truly contagious and inspirational. Stretch is only ever a phone call away and I never have an issue or problem in approaching Stretch with any problems or just to seek advice. Stretch is a leader in every sense of the word and I thoroughly enjoy serving within his management.
Once again, if I have failed to mention you please present yourself to the bar next season, point it out and I’ll shout you a drink on Stretch’s account.
Look forward to raising a glass with you in the 17/18 season.

BUILDING CO-ORDINATORS REPORT
Fellow members, I am pleased to report the following on the property front.
This year our club fully funded the purchase of an external secure storage facility that allows us to store club property used daily in a secure area that compliments the club from an appearance point of view. This addition was required from a security perspective after a number of security breaches and incidents.
I can advise that funding for the capital works program, being the installation of all-weather security shutters for windows located on the top floor of our club facing east and north east, has been approved. This initiative we hope will not only provide greater level of security but will protect the club from the east coast lows. New security shutters will replace the old boat shed sliding garage doors reducing the risk of injury to members.
Other projects on the list include.
1) Memorabilia project – Bernie Kelly Bar/Heritage Room
2) Solar panels to help reduce our massive and increasing electricity costs
3) New water proofing of the men’s shower room
4) Upgrade kitchen for the Heritage Room
5) Upgraded men’s and ladies toilets
6) Replacement of the support beams around the entry to the nipper storage room
We are looking to secure approximately $250k for these projects and ask that you keep an eye open for potential sponsorship opportunities.
Concluding this report I am pleased to advise that with Randwick Council we were able to improve the grass on the beach side and ask that vehicles remain off the grass where possible and beach ATV also try and drive on the concrete slabs.
Please respect our club and help protect our it from damage and misuse, clean up after yourselves whether it is after using the gym, showers, or just walking into the club with sand all over your feet or washing sand off boats and trailers around the club.
Can I take this opportunity to thank the ever reliable Barry Osborne and Leslie our Caretakers and of course Ken Hudson, Gus Taylor, Bruce Creecy, Alex Pavalakis (PIA Security) and Rick Riosa owner of Rick’s Refrigeration for some odds and ends around the club and always having their hand up to repair club property, or simply clean up after others, thanks guys!

Our members made 130 rescues this session and the spread of rescue devices used was a good mix. I like seeing rescues being made on all equipment, but feel we’d be better placed moving some of our tube rescues numbers to boards. When used by a skilled member boards are a safer more effective rescue device than both tube and IRB.
Again, we can report No loss of life while South Maroubra members were on patrol for the 2016/17 season. This is always something our lifesavers should be proud of and in its simplest form our primary purpose. The importance of the service we provide was made all too clear over the Christmas period at Maroubra Beach and the greater NSW area. During the 2-week period surrounding Christmas over 15 people drowned in NSW alone, and our beach did not escape being a part of the tragic toll.
One of these drownings, which occurred after hours in the rip at the South end of Maroubra Beach, resulted in a 3-day search and rescue operation that over 20 of our members were involved in. These types of operations are a delicate situation for all, with family, media and other emergency service all involved. Our members did us proud, and did so outside our usual weekend operations. All in all, I am extremely proud of our patrolling members and extend a big thank you.
We had a leadership change in our education team with Michael Fernandez taking over from Cathie Hall in the Chief Instructor role. The trainers have worked hard all season training back to back Bronze Medallion and SRC squads. Just like Cathie, Mike has very high standards in the courses his team runs. This is evident in the quality of lifesavers that hit the beach straight after gaining their awards. These new lifesavers come out of these courses confident in their ability and new skills to perform under any situation presented to them.
Our new award numbers are steady with 27 Bronze Medallion and 23 SRC this season. We have seen the numbers of new Bronze holders upskilling to IRB crew straight after gaining their award increase, giving us even better skilled members. Our higher awards such as Advance
Resuscitation and Silver Medallion Aquatic Rescue had good participation as well. Mike and his team have done a great job focusing their efforts this year training the awards we need to keep the beach safe. Big thanks to all involved.
The IRB section also saw a change this year, with William Shaddock taking on the role of IRB Captain. William made some positive changes that was clearly seen with how our IRBs performed on patrol. William has implemented a lot of new processes around servicing and maintenance of equipment, most of which involved him spending hours each week in the shed servicing IRB gear. The importance of having gear that operators can rely on during a rescue makes a huge difference in the confidence of the operator and their ability to make rescues in tough conditions.
The Lifesaving Committee implemented a process at the start of the season that got all Patrol Captains and IRB drivers together to run a workshop. The aim of the workshop was to share ideas, practices and concerns. It was clear from the start a lot of our senior members have different ways of doing things and we worked towards standardising these practices and improve on them. We had good feedback on the program and hope to build on it in the future.
A few thanks to Lifesaving Committee members not already mentioned. Ronny Krite, our Assistant Direct of Lifesaving, who outside all the work he does behind the scenes with patrol scheduling and patrol teams, also puts in a huge about of hours on the beach and is on patrol most weekends.
Thank you to all our patrol captains but a special mention to Greg Shaw. Greg came back this year after a short break and took on the challenging role of Patrol 14 (nipper) patrol. This patrol does 21 patrols each year and has 2 SRC groups that support it. Greg puts everything in to each patrol and shares his patrolling expertise by mentoring a lot of our young members each Sunday morning.
Lastly, thank you to Nicole Cooney who took on the position this season of Lifesaving Registrar. Nicole like Ronny also performs 100+ hours of patrol, countless hours training our SRC squads and has dramatically improved the lifesaving communication and administration throughout the season.
I would also like to thank all our supporters, without their generous contribution to the Club we couldn’t provide the service we do and the public expects from us. Big thanks to Souths Juniors for providing key lifesaving equipment, Caltex for fuel sponsorship of our Inflatable Rescue Boat operations, Randwick Club, Maroubra Seals and Randwick City Council for your continuous support.
I look forward to seeing you all on the beach next season.
Yours in Lifesaving

LIFESAVING
More than anything, this year has highlighted the importance of our club needing to attract, train, up skill and retain active lifesavers. At South Maroubra having numbers on the beach is just not enough. Looking the part isn’t good enough. We need highly skilled lifesavers that can perform rescues in some very testing conditions week in, week out.

This season saw 15 new crew and 1 new driver join the ranks at South Maroubra. I would like to thank Mike Fernandez (CTO) and Jay Shelley (IRB Trainer) who have put in massive hours to ensure all our new drivers and crew are at a high standard. It isn’t an easy task bring in numbers and organising these courses, so thank you men for all your efforts and hard work.
Thank you to all the IRB members that assisted with water safety at different carnivals and events this season. It is never an easy task and can make for a very long day on the water. The effort you all put in and the time you dedicate has certainly not gone unnoticed.
Now onto the competition side of things – Our IRB racing team once again battled the elements, competing in the NSW IRB Premiership Series, the NSW IRB State Titles and the Australian IRB Titles. The NSW Premiership Series saw us at Caves Beach, Mollymook, Ocean Beach and then Cape Hawke to close out the series. With challenging conditions, our teams were put to the test throughout the rounds providing some thrills and spills but really bringing some consistency and form going into the State Titles held at South West Rocks. With the weather and conditions on our side we came away with one gold and four silvers, and a 3rd place in the overall point score. I am extremely proud with the effort everyone put in over the season and congratulations on the amazing results.
At the time of writing this report we’re getting ready to head up to the Australian Championships to be held at Kingscliff, I wish the very best to those who are competing and hopefully we can bring back excellent results.
I would like to send a thank you to Christopher Maloney, Damion Woods, Michael Fernandez, Owen Skjeime, Nicole Cooney and Ken Hudson. These people have helped me a lot throughout my first season as IRB captain and given me the tools and resources in becoming a lead for the IRB section. It has been a big task and to have these people on board helping me has increased my confidence and leadership skills.
Finally, thank you to all our IRB drivers and crew for the work you do over the season. I made mention of it all in the above, but being an IRB member is not just about patrols, here is so much more work that goes on with water safety events, training, competition and gear maintenance just to name a few. If it wasn’t for your commitment and dedication, we wouldn’t have the large section that we see today.
See you down the beach to do it all again!

IRB REPORT
As the 2016/2017 season comes to a close I have the honour of writing my first IRB report for South Maroubra SLSC. This year saw myself step up the IRB captains role and what a year it has been for me and all the other IRB drivers and crew at South Maroubra SLSC. Once again we had another busy year on patrol and the IRB sure proved why it’s our most important piece of equipment on the beach. It’s a massive credit to all our IRB drivers and crew who often find themselves going out in some very testing conditions.

A big thank you has to go to Nicole Cooney who pretty much handled the whole design and marketing side of it single-handedly. This saw quite a large number of new members join in for both SRC and Bronze courses this last season. Our goal was to reach 50 new members over SRC and Bronze and I am happy to say that we achieved this bringing in 52 of them this season. Our total award count for the season was 151 (134 last year). We’re growing our numbers steadily and my hope is we can build on this in the new season.
As you are all most likely aware, Cathie Hall stepped down as CTO at the end of last season and handed over the reins. I thank Cathie for her amazing work over the last many years as CTO. We wouldn’t have the team we have today if it wasn’t for all her hard work and dedication to the role, often sacrificing time spent with her family. She has been a mentor to myself and so many others and I would not be in the position to take on this role if it wasn’t for her guidance and support.
To all the trainers that give up their spare time to train our members, I thank you. Your hard work and dedication to the countless hours you put in to help train certainly doesn’t go unnoticed. Education is where it all starts with becoming a lifesaver, so without you guys there to do the work we don’t have a club. Below are the standouts for this season.
Jay – trained 2 IRB courses and 2 Bronze courses. Jay continues to be one of our hardest working trainers and is always there to lend a hand if I call on him. To put the hours he puts in into perspective, there is about 7 months in the season and Jay is training courses for 6 of those 7 months.
Cathie – Cathie may have stepped away from the CTO role but she certainly hasn’t stopped training, playing a hand in training 2 Bronze courses, a resus course, a spinal course and an ARTC course. Cathie spent pretty much the whole season from start to finish helping train all these courses.
Kelly – Trained 2 Bronze courses, a spinal course, two resus courses and an ARTC course. Kelly also went on to become an endorsed trainer in Spinal and ARTC bringing further experience and depth into our advanced award trainers.
Ronny – AKA Mr Reliable. Ronny trained 2 Bronze courses and is always there to help out with anything where needed. To do this on top of his duties as ADOL is a massive credit to him.
Darren – Darren joined the team this season as a Trainee Bronze Trainer. He proved himself very early on, exceeding expectations and displaying a great knowledge of course content and great communication training candidates. Darren trained two bronze courses and is now an endorsed Bronze Medallion trainer.
Nicole – As she has for a few years now, Nicole has done an amazing job training our young SRCs. The feedback I get from the kids and parents is all very positive. Nicole also helped with a resus and bronze course, and has become an endorsed Bronze trainer which again gives us more depth in the training ranks. Nicole was also awarded Sydney Branch Trainer of the Year for all her efforts throughout the season. Well done Nicole.
Thank you also to the rest of our trainers (Nixy, Tom, John C, John R, Vince and Robbo) who helped out with proficiencies and a range of different courses throughout the season.
A group of people that go fairly unnoticed at a club level are our assessors as they generally do their work at other clubs. On top of patrols and training courses our assessors also put in the hard yards assessing different clubs throughout the season. Thank you guys for all your hard work.
Cathie 5 Bronze/SRC assessments and an ARTC assessment
John C 5 Bronze assessments
John R 4 Bronze assessments and Spinal assessment
Robbo 7 SRC assessments. Really solid effort, well done Ray
Vince 5 Bronze assessments and an ARTC assessment
Due to the work Cathie has put in over so many years, we have a really solid foundation now in the education team and I look forward to working with everyone again next season to further build off that.
See you on the beach!

EDUCATION
The 2016/17 season was quite a successful one for our very dedicated education team. Coming off the back of a fairly “quiet” season last year in terms of award numbers, we sat down as a team at the beginning of the season and discussed ways of further promoting our Bronze and SRC courses.

SOUTH MAROUBRA AWARDS 2016-2017 (CONTINUED)

Aside from developing and delivering exceptional young lifesavers to our community, we set out a number of key areas to focus on and several goals to deliver, some of those were:
• Deliver an all-inclusive program
• Education
• Member retention
• Parents’ engagement
• Build the bridge between nipper graduates (U14s), Youth and Seniors within the club; and
• Build a strong training and support team to deliver a comprehensive training program.
We delivered these and more with flying colours, feedback received from parents was amazing, it is a true reflection of the professionalism, commitment and knowledge of our coaches, age managers and their support team, as well as of my nipper executive team.
The 2016/2017 season’s calendar was structured as per previous years, we introduced an extra twilight nipper day, which proved to be very successful.
The conditions this season were magnificent, our young lifesavers at training had plenty of water activities, and for those that wanted to further develop their water skills, training was delivered from early August.
We maintained our 100% attendance award, Twilight Nippers, Nipper Disco and BBQ activities through the season to finish off with the Annual Trivia night. Our Junior Carnival was replaced this year by our Ocean Swim, it was great to see so many of you nippers competing at this event.
In regards to our Age groups, this season, we welcomed 120+ new future lifesavers to our U6s Groups with Pascal Giraud, Damien Alexiou and Nik Hippmann as their Age Managers, all supported by our U6/7s coordinator Laurie Last. Thanks to the team as they did an amazing job with the support of our Beach Crew.
To our U14s that have graduated from Nippers, I wish you all the very best in the Youth Team (South Maroubra Sting Rays), looking forward to seeing you back at the beach
mentoring the young ones and also participating at club events. Big thanks to Craig Davis for your support and work with this group.
Our U8s made the move to the big side of the beach, the transition was seamless. To our age managers Corrine Henville and Emma Ryan, both supported by our Beach Crew, thanks for your commitment and support. Kids participated and enjoyed thoroughly their nipper Sundays and the new challenges. A large number successfully represented South Maroubra SLSC at several carnivals and Branch, making their parents and the club very proud.
Our U9s had their first experience swimming out into the big sea, we experienced some tears at the beginning, although finished the season strong.
The Age Managers and beach crew supporting the U9s to U13s groups did an amazing job leading them, the feedback I received has been extremely positive and encouraging. I thank you for your commitment and support, and I look forward to seeing you at the beach next season.
This is the first year we had our own official photographer, quietly in the background, Claire McCabe roamed our beach photographing our young lifesavers in action. Thanks, so much Claire, you did a fantastic job.
To past junior members that volunteered their time to mentor and share your knowledge with our nippers, I thank you. We appreciate your commitment and time; our nippers thoroughly enjoy having you around.
EDUCATIONEducation and development of our young members and family is a key to the success of our program. During the past season, we delivered a number of training/development courses.
Many our future young leaders from the U11s and U13s represented our club at the Sydney Branch Nipper Development camps. They learnt valuable leadership skills whilst furthering their lifesaving skills, all delivered in a well organised program. Thanks to the parents and volunteers that

COMPETITION/TRAININGThe engagement of our junior members increased immensely this season; this was supported by a thorough training program managed by a team of dedicated coaches. To our Junior Head Coach, Dave Lowlett, supported by the coaching team (Phil Dutton, Max Murphy, Colin Marshall, Chris Stokes, Darren McLean, Pascal Giraud), you guys did an amazing job, thanks for your commitment, dedication and knowledge.
All of our coaches are volunteers, and they give us their time to train and teach the skills to our nippers, it is rewarding to see how these young athletes develop to become great lifesavers. Thanks for your commitment and support.
The touring team consisted of 100 members, they proudly represented our club at several local junior carnivals, as well as some other State Junior Carnivals, culminating the competition side of the program with our attendance to Branch at Maroubra Beach and the State Championships at Swansea-Belmont where we placed amongst the top 10 clubs in NSW for a consecutive 4th year.
To Colin Marshall, our touring team manager, thanks for all the work you did in leading our team, big thanks to the parents who volunteered their time to support the team, being water safety, officiating and/or recording events. To Deanne Goldschmidt, thanks so much for the amazing job you did with our team’s uniforms, they looked fantastic.
AWARDS/PRESENTATIONSPresentation days were conducted as per our season calendar.
Our young U6s and U7s were presented with their medals, surf education certificates and awards on the last day of Nippers, great day to finish the season.
All other groups (U8s to U14s) had their presentation several weeks later. Congratulations to all junior members that achieved their 100%, 200%, 300%+ attendance and were presented with their relevant trophies.
Congratulations to all recipients of Point Score, coaches, and age manager’s encouragement awards.
Congratulations and a big thanks to our Junior Captains Bridget Crick and Cooper Stokes, both did amazingly well during the season, became great role models for the younger groups and represented the club with pride at all events you both participated.
Bridget and Cooper represented our club at the Sydney Branch Junior Lifesaver of the Year competition, both made it to the final stage with Bridget claiming the Female Junior Lifesaver of the Year award for Sydney Branch. Bridget then competed and represented our club and Sydney Branch at State Level.
The Bruce Rutherford Memorial Award for the most outstanding surf female nipper at State Level was awarded to Madeline Hardy, Congratulations Maddie!

ABC - NIPPERSAs many of you know, our club was hand-picked to be part of ‘Nippers’, an ABC TV show from the Young Australians series. Nippers will showcase lifesaving, the developing of young lifesavers and the impact it has on Australian families and our youth. I’ve seen the first two episodes of Nippers, it is brilliant, I am very proud of our junior members, their families and our support team that worked on this project and how they proudly represented our club and our colours, well done to you all!
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSTo my nippers and families, I hope that you enjoyed the season and are looking forward to the new season, certainly, I can’t wait. I sincerely thank you for your support, efforts and commitment; you play an instrumental role in the success of our program.
The program is delivered 100% by volunteers, a team that share the same goal and that is to deliver an all-inclusive program in a fun and family friendly environment.
Operationally, the program couldn’t be delivered in such a successful manner without the support of the so many volunteers that tirelessly volunteer their time towards the program and movement. I’d like to recognise and thank my Assistant Director – Uri Teitler, my Gear Steward – Paul Ryan and my Nipper Registrar – Maria Garay. I’d like to also take this opportunity to recognise the support and commitment provided by Emma Ryan and Shannon Gray, you are amazing!
To our nipper patrol Captain Greg Shaw, for his dedication, commitment and support you provided to me and my team, as well as the amazing work you do with the SRCs, I thank you! To Greg’s patrol team and the IRB Nipper team, I thank you. To my amazing Beach Crew team, the support you provide to our junior members and the age managers is essential to the successful delivery of the program, thanks to you all.
Sunday’s setting up starts before 7AM and packing up is not completed until after midday on a normal nipper day. Not an easy task. All managed by our Gear Steward Paul Ryan, supported by Brett Milsop. Paul’s role doesn’t end there, he also ensures the equipment for our nippers is adequate and in working order.
To Paul and Brett, thanks so much for all your hard work, it is greatly appreciated.
To my family, I thank you for your unconditional support, love and patience.
Thanks to our nipper partners Sydney City Volkswagen and RAMS Sydney East Sydney.
Thanks to the club’s major partners Maroubra Seals Club, The Juniors, Randwick City Council, Botany City Council & the NSW Government. To the local businesses that supported us – namely Look Design, CSJ Seafood’s, Mick Fisher and the many businesses that supported us during the past season.
I’d like to acknowledge those within Sydney Branch for their ongoing support to our club, being supporting at carnivals, jet ski/IRB support or via administration in general. Thanks to the BJD and Sydney Branch BOSS for their commitment and support to the Branches EAP, Dev and HP squad activities.
It is an honour to be part of such a great club as South Maroubra SLSC and be able to contribute to its success and the success of surf lifesaving and the nipper program.

This season the number of people competing in summer sports has increased significantly.
The masters division had a large increase with the arrival of the South Maroubra “Masterrettes”. Many of our masters regularly finished in the top 3, and our new female Masters team did South Maroubra SLSC proud with some great results throughout the season, also regularly placing in the top 3.
The male masters continued to perform well in the major carnivals, call out goes to Andrew Newrick, Phil Dutton, John Rooney, Max Murphy, David Smith and the Weapon Vets with medals at the Aussies.
This year, it was great to see a few former nippers progressing into the youth division. It will be important to nuture this age group to ensure we have some talent moving into the open divisions in the coming years. Cooper Stokes and Luc Christensen both represented South Maroubra proudly at the Australian Youth Championships.
Phil Stivano has been a strong leader driving growth and results in boat section. With some early changes in crews due to injury, the crews performed strong in all events they competed in. With the Junior crew in their last season of U19s, not only did they compete well but also stepped up against the pros in the Ocean Thunder. After a couple changes with our vets team, the WeaponVets, they went on to achieve the golden trifecta with gold at Branch, State and Aussies. I look forward to see what these guys achieve in the new season.
IRB competition is well underway as I write this report with the team performing well in tough conditions in the
premiership rounds. The team is 30 members strong, with a young core group coming through who will see the team continue to grow over the years. A goal of the team this year was to improve on their State performance from last season and did so but coming 3rd overall. Great effort all around.
Rescue 2016, the World Life Saving Championships, were held in the Netherlands. We saw a small but strong team attend with good representation in the finals. Congrats to David Smith on his World Gold medal.
SOUTH MAROUBRA OCEAN CHALLENGE
Late last year, I presented a proposal to the BOM to organise and host an ocean swim as an alternative to the Junior Carnival. Fast forward to Feb 2017, the South Maroubra Ocean Challenge was run in spectacular conditions, light offshore winds, 2-3ft swell and sunny. The forecasted numbers were greatly exceeded with many entering on the day, we finished up with 580 swimmers competing across 3 different race distances and age groups.
This event was run extremely well, and this is due to the fantastic support by all of our lifesavers and volunteers that spent many long hours setting up, providing water safety, directions, marshalling, registrations, and packing away.
Special thanks goes to Souths Juniors, Audi Centre Sydney and Sold Out for your support. We had many organisations sponsor this swim by providing either prizes or supplies.
We would like to thank our officials, coaches and our Board of Management for their input, assistance and dedication to the Club and Completion. Special thanks to section heads for their work at the club, also Victoria Raymond, Linda Perrin, Yvette Rutherford, Stretch and Club Administration Michelle Lo, without all of the club members “Nothing would happen”.
Thank You
SIMON SMITH Director of Competition
DIRECTOR OF COMPETITION REPORT
The objective of the competition area this year was to continue to grow the participation in the summer surf sports as the IRB competition numbers have always been quite healthy.

IRB COMPETITION REPORT
The Premiership series kicked off at Caves Beach and the team put in a pretty solid effort competing in their first carnival for the year. Two days of nice weather made for some great racing and our team seemed to brush off the cobwebs pretty quickly with multiple appearances in finals at the end of competition.
Mollymook hosted the 2nd round of the series which turned out to be a bit of a non-event. While the team competed strongly, the carnival was eventually suspended due to large surf conditions. Credit has to go to all our drivers and crews who competed conservatively and safely to ensure there were no injuries.
Round 3 saw the team take a short drive up the coast to Ocean Beach. Again, we weren’t so lucky with the conditions on day one with messy surf and overcast, windy conditions. The course was an interesting one, with the distance out and back to the cans sitting at almost 1 kilometre. This obviously
made for some slower racing, taking the carnival into a second day which thankfully turned out a lot better that the first with cleaner conditions and faster racing come the finals.
The final round of the premiership series was held at Cape Hawke in Forster. For the first time since round one we had some nice conditions which made racing a tad easy on the body. Our team put in a consistent performance as they put in the last of their preparations before the State Titles.
This seasons State Titles were held at South West Rocks in the best conditions all season. There wasn’t a lot of surf and the sun was out for the duration of the carnival which made for fast and enjoyable racing. The teams goal this year was to get back into the top three after last season’s slump and I am proud to say that we achieved just that. We fielded one of our strongest teams in a while and everyone raced the best they had all season. We unfortunately had some terrible calls go against us, but the team still kept their head high competing up until the final race of the carnival, going on to achieve 3rd place in the overall point score.
This years Aussies will be held up at Kingscliff and we again look to put in a strong performance and get some more of our teams up on that podium.
Until next year,
WILLIAM SHADDOCKIRB Coordinator
For another year now, our IRB team took to the beaches in winter to compete in the NSW IRB Premiership, the NSW State IRB Titles and the SLSA Australian IRB titles.

This year we had a mix of new and current female members competing in the beach events, the new “South Maroubra Masterrettes” relay team was formed. They female competitors were Kristy Smith, Nixy Krite, Thelma Mislop, Nicole Cooney and Ashleigh Breaden.
The male team is well represented across the age groups. Darren Tannock, Dave Lowlett primarily doing water events with Andrew Newrick, Phil Dutton, Max Murphy and David Smith competing in the sand events. Jayson Lincoln unfortunately hurt his shoulder in the branch masters carnival and was unable to compete for the remainder of the season
The Masters team attended more carnivals this year, this is reflected in the increased expense for the carnival entries. The benefits far outweigh the cost, the training, comradeship and skills development all make better lifesavers.
For a small surf club we have achieved some great results – 4th in Branch, 14th at the State titles and major medals in the Aussies. I am looking forward to another great year in 2018.
Thanks for everyone who has helped in the background, we could not have competed if it wasn’t to the officials and administration assistance.

Again, after several months of pre-season training unfortunately only two crews made the finish line through various stumbling blocks. It proves how hard it is to start and complete a full season in a tough but rewarding sport.
The South Maroubra Rookies (u/19 male) and The South Maroubra WeaponVets (B’s and Masters) both swept by boat captain Phil Stivano, raced throughout the season and were both highly competitive with each crew making EVERY carnival final that they were entered for.
Both the ROOKIES and the WEAPONVETS filled in the vacant Ocean Thunder (A grade pro surfboat series) position and did not let down themselves, the club or sponsor for the event - DESIGN CONFIDENCE.
THE ROOKIES U/19 MALE
Noah Simpkins, Brodie Hampson, Ben Hall, Billy Zaletel, Callum Douglas and Phil Stivano (sweep). Our standout crew over last few seasons, this was the Rookies third and final year competing in the junior division. After State and Aussies finals positions last season, our boys were keen to get onto the top step of the podium this season. Outside of the Ocean Thunder, the Rookies competed at 10 carnivals and were completely robbed of ultimate glory at the nationals titles due to cyclone Debbie.
The season finished with 2/1sts, 3/2nds, 3/3rds, 1/4th and a 5th. The junior division has grown to be the second largest division in the sport. To not miss one final with injury and some disruption through the season is a credit to the ROOKIES.
Leading from start to finish in the NSW State Final, disaster 20m from the line and finishing the course in a rip saw the boys finish 5th in what was ultimately their last race for the year.
The Rookies are excited to step up into U/23 male next season and also dabble in some of the A grade events.
THE WEAPONVETS
Ryan Airlie, Cameron James, Daniel Weizman, Steve Boyd and Phil Stivano (sweep). After 2 crew changes to the WeaponVets from last season and several combinations before getting going properly, the WeaponVets again punched well above their weight this year, dominating the masters 140’s division and featuring at the pointy end of the reserve grade men’s division at each outing. Racing at 7 carnivals and making every final for B’s and winning every Vets carnival entered, including often racing both divisions at the same carnival was a great effort, highlighting the ability of these gentlemen and showing the sport that Phil Stivano can get the best from most athletes given they listen to him and follow his plan. 13 races over two days at Pacific Palms was an outstanding effort, winning the Masters and making the final in the B’s. NSW State Masters was moved to flat water this year with the WeaponVets taking gold at this event. State moved back to the beach at Swansea Belmont for the reserve division and for the second season in a row, the WeaponVets made the NSW Reserve grade final and were highly unlucky not to medal, finishing strongly from the toughest end.
Cyclone Debbie did not completely ruin the Aussies, as our champion WeaponVets were able to compete at the start of the week in the Australian Masters at Tugan. The Golden Trifecta of winning GOLD at BRANCH, STATE and AUSSIES was achieved. Anyone who has competed in any discipline can tell you this a huge effort, but in Surfboats it is even tougher. A great effort men!

Overall, our crews performed and punched well above their weight. We had a great time in our new boat. This boat in its short life has yet to miss a final.
Special mention must be made to all sponsors who have assisted during the season. A massive thanks for making this happen:
• Top Cat Catering – Jenny Eliades
• Maroubra Seals
• Paul Fownes – personal donation
• South Maroubra SLSC for continued support
• Bisley Workwear
• NG Farrah Real Estate – Cameron Airlie
• Design Confidence
• Building Control Group – Cameron James
• Town Tavern Blacktown – Simon Paterson
• Runa Earthworks – Peter Boneham
A mention as always should be made to the supporters who assist with training and at carnivals.
BOB BYRNE AND PETER (DINO) STEENSON
Our life member boaties are always a huge help around the section and particularly at carnivals with BOTH serving as senior officials. The friendship developed between the younger and older generation boaties continues to grow in strength. Some of the away road trips provide many memorable tales, probably best left off this report.
MARK INGELMO
Moey is an asset to our section with a solid coaching pedigree. Moey regularly gives up his time to coach our crews and provide the extra polish required to feature in finals week after week.

FACES AROUND THE CLUB

55
Peter Murphy has been an active patrolling member of our cub since 1972. This is a remarkable achievement from a most dedicated and loyal member.
In his 43rd year as a member Peter has also been a patrol captain for more than 25 years and his lifesaving record has numerous SLS awards including being a Cub Instructor (Trainer) for 19 years and a member of Sydney Branch Board of Control (as it used to be called) for 8 years.
Vice Chairman, Hon Secretary, Chief Instructor and Director of Youth are just some of the ‘key’ management positions that Peter has held within our Club. His record speaks for itself and there is no worthier member of South Maroubra SLSC Inc that deserves Life Membership.
IN SUMMARY
Vice Chairman 2 years, Hon Secretary 2 years, Assistant Secretary 1 year, Chief Instructor 2 years, Assist Chief Instructor 1 year, Director Youth 2 years, Assist Director Lifesaving 2 years, Fundraising Coordinator 6 years, Members Liaison Officer 2 years, U18 Coordinator 2 years, Touring Team Manager 4 years, Club Instructor 19 years
Continuous patrol since 1972, Patrol Captain 25 years, 15 – 25 – 30 Year National Patrol Service Award, 40 Year Long Service 2013
We strongly urge the Clubs Life Membership Committee to recommend Peter’s Life Membership nomination to the Club BOM for endorsement so that the Club members can decide on the Life Membership nomination at the 2016 AGM.
